0:00:14.620,0:00:16.104 I've been blown away by all these talks 0:00:16.104,0:00:17.903 about rebirth and renaissance today. 0:00:18.475,0:00:19.477 I believe 0:00:19.692,0:00:21.888 humanity works on a cycle of rebirths 0:00:21.888,0:00:23.444 and we are at the crossroads of a new one. 0:00:23.444,0:00:25.515 Our lives are becoming [br]more and more digitized. 0:00:25.515,0:00:27.716 And in time, education will follow. 0:00:28.855,0:00:31.105 As a history major,[br]I struggled to find a job. 0:00:31.105,0:00:33.865 I actually ended up working[br]in the environmental industry 0:00:33.865,0:00:35.225 in Kenya, in East Africa, 0:00:35.225,0:00:37.256 working on renewable energy projects 0:00:37.256,0:00:40.344 with a focus on biogas[br]in rural communities. 0:00:40.784,0:00:43.066 This then led me to Beijing, China 0:00:43.066,0:00:44.586 and the scene you can see behind me, 0:00:44.586,0:00:46.680 another beautiful sunny afternoon [br] 0:00:46.680,0:00:47.974 in the Chinese capital. 0:00:47.974,0:00:49.668 I was tired of breathing in [br] 0:00:49.668,0:00:51.703 this dirty, polluted, smoggy air. 0:00:51.703,0:00:53.252 And I kept alerting my friends[br] 0:00:53.252,0:00:54.801 and family back home 0:00:54.801,0:00:56.350 of what it was like to live through this. 0:00:56.350,0:00:57.646 But they didn't really believe me.[br] 0:00:57.646,0:00:59.972 So I decided to look back on history. 0:00:59.972,0:01:01.617 So armed with my history diploma, 0:01:01.617,0:01:03.619 what events stood out for me? 0:01:03.619,0:01:06.632 The London Great Smog, in 1952. 0:01:06.642,0:01:09.182 12 000 people lost their lives in 5 days. 0:01:09.182,0:01:10.812 12 000 people. 0:01:10.812,0:01:13.945 This is the worst man-made [br]air pollution disaster ever. 0:01:13.945,0:01:16.106 And yet, hardly anybody knew about it. 0:01:16.118,0:01:17.993 So what I decided to do, [br] 0:01:17.993,0:01:19.798 was to create a fictional character, 0:01:19.799,0:01:22.129 someone who woke up in 1952,[br] 0:01:22.129,0:01:24.275 had a smartphone and began tweeting. 0:01:24.275,0:01:27.713 And he tweeted as if he was[br]really living the event in real time. 0:01:27.713,0:01:29.293 But this was over 60 years ago. 0:01:29.298,0:01:30.998 I used the hashtag "#GreatSmog" 0:01:30.998,0:01:34.121 and I spoke in a language [br]which kids were familiar with 0:01:34.121,0:01:35.265 and they could understand. 0:01:35.747,0:01:38.229 We got picked up by media organisations, 0:01:38.229,0:01:39.739 we got picked up by environmentalists 0:01:39.739,0:01:41.691 and everyone started following this feed, 0:01:41.691,0:01:43.501 re-living this historical event. 0:01:44.627,0:01:46.643 It was the true impact of the Great Smog, 0:01:46.643,0:01:49.147 people didn't actually know [br]what was going on at the time. 0:01:49.147,0:01:51.868 It's only when the hospitals [br]started filling up, 0:01:51.868,0:01:54.272 people were dying of [br]heart attacks in the streets, 0:01:54.272,0:01:56.777 people were dying in [br]their homes while they slept. 0:01:57.787,0:02:02.294 And yet, they didn't quite realize [br]how many people were dying. 0:02:02.294,0:02:03.930 It's only when the morgues [br]were actually full 0:02:03.930,0:02:06.324 that they realized the true[br]impact of the Great Smog. 0:02:07.294,0:02:11.216 So I created 422 tweets [br]in the space of 5 days 0:02:11.216,0:02:14.259 and I reached millions [br]of people on Twitter. 0:02:14.259,0:02:15.827 So you are probably thinking, [br] 0:02:15.827,0:02:20.182 "what's the point? Why did I do this? [br]What's the interest?" 0:02:20.182,0:02:24.033 Well, I did it because history [br]is still stuck in the dark ages. 0:02:24.179,0:02:25.519 History teaching 0:02:25.519,0:02:28.331 and it's outdated context, [br]outdated delivery, 0:02:28.331,0:02:30.175 kids are simply bored of it. 0:02:31.570,0:02:34.430 If you want a kid to hate [br]their iPad, put a textbook on it. 0:02:34.430,0:02:35.473 It's the same with history. 0:02:35.473,0:02:38.183 We can't just live with static figures [br] 0:02:38.183,0:02:39.523 and dates and numbers. 0:02:39.523,0:02:41.091 Kids aren't interested in that anymore. 0:02:41.091,0:02:42.971 We need history to be brought to life, 0:02:42.971,0:02:44.692 we need the teachers to actually use 0:02:44.692,0:02:46.533 the power of technology and tell stories. 0:02:47.643,0:02:50.983 This is what I strive to do everyday [br]as a technology entrepreneur. 0:02:52.713,0:02:54.773 Innovation though, is difficult. 0:02:54.773,0:02:58.993 What we really need is to push [br]for schools to have a new vision 0:02:58.993,0:03:02.198 and a new way to be open [br]and pushing for collaboration. 0:03:03.604,0:03:07.476 Here are a few examples [br]of innovators in the space 0:03:07.476,0:03:09.706 who use technology and mix it with history 0:03:09.706,0:03:11.318 to bring a story to life. 0:03:11.318,0:03:14.316 One of the teachers I spoke to [br]a couple of months ago, Corina, 0:03:14.316,0:03:16.100 she works at the Steve Jobs schools 0:03:16.100,0:03:18.804 - yes, they do exist,[br]in Almere in the Netherlands - 0:03:18.804,0:03:20.682 and she told me just that, 0:03:20.682,0:03:25.288 she said what she liked about using [br]history and technology in the classroom 0:03:25.288,0:03:27.451 is that it brought the content to life 0:03:27.461,0:03:28.927 and engaged to students. 0:03:28.927,0:03:31.013 It made her kids curious, 0:03:31.013,0:03:33.565 it lighted that spark of [br]curiosity inside them, 0:03:33.565,0:03:35.767 which got them to go explore more 0:03:35.767,0:03:38.513 and find out more about [br]that historical event. 0:03:38.513,0:03:41.513 And that's exactly... and she's right! 0:03:41.513,0:03:44.648 Every teacher that I liked [br]and remembered from history 0:03:44.648,0:03:45.967 told me a powerful story. 0:03:45.967,0:03:47.378 When now teachers have technology [br] 0:03:47.378,0:03:48.658 to actually make this happen, 0:03:48.658,0:03:50.104 it's very easy. 0:03:51.714,0:03:54.880 The second example I want [br]to show you is Minecraft. 0:03:54.880,0:03:56.813 So for those of you that [br]don't know Minecraft,[br] 0:03:56.813,0:03:58.825 it's a virtual 3D sandbox game 0:03:58.825,0:04:02.446 where users can create these [br]amazing worlds from scratch. 0:04:02.446,0:04:08.625 Now Minecraft is great because it pushes[br]for collaboration, for digital citizenships 0:04:08.625,0:04:10.070 and by that I mean 0:04:10.070,0:04:12.895 sort of Internet ethics [br]and also privacy issues. 0:04:12.895,0:04:16.288 And it allows for people to really [br]chat on there and discuss events. 0:04:17.104,0:04:19.311 What was so great about this Minecraft 0:04:19.311,0:04:22.022 was that it was a student that created it[br] 0:04:22.022,0:04:23.348 for his Latin class. 0:04:23.348,0:04:25.958 So the student, before Minecraft, 0:04:25.958,0:04:28.535 did not feel engaged with the content, 0:04:28.535,0:04:29.793 he was having problems studying. 0:04:29.793,0:04:32.913 So he created [br]this Roman bath house himself. 0:04:32.913,0:04:36.214 And from there, [br]he actually learnt Latin 0:04:36.214,0:04:39.336 and started giving tours [br]to other users in Latin. 0:04:39.336,0:04:41.045 I mean, how engaging is that 0:04:41.045,0:04:42.151 and how inspiring is that?
