And it was one little corner. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It was called the "Percent for Art Corner" of sort of a very tough park, or what 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 was left of a park. There was a skating rink that was in bad need of repair. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And I said, "I don't believe an art work, one singular object is going to help 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 resolve sort of the urban situation of what this park is and is not doing, but if 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the Frey Foundation is at all interested in having me come in, having the art act 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 as a catalyst to completely rework this park, I would be extremely interested." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I think the idea of a skating rink 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is something that just sort of piqued my fancy. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 What I actually wanted to do was take an 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 idea of sculpture and grow it into a park. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I didn't realize I was going to have to work as an architect as well, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because the city then required two or 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 three buildings to be part of the site. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 A bandstand, a restroom facility, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I'll have put in all the lighting. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Yeah, it's not... 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I wonder if you're gonna notice that, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That might be a good North Star. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 <v Assistant>okay.</v> 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 <v ->Right?</v> 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And so then we either go deep, deep blue. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Yeah, that works fine for the North Star, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because it's off-blue. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 <v ->Okay.</v> 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 <v ->I'm really curious what this looks like with ice on it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We're soon gonna find out, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 with ice. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I sort of called this one the three stages 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of water: solid, liquid, and gas. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So the liquid is a water fountain 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that's three feet about you. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 A circle covered with water in it flows 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 off the front edge. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The mist or the gas fountain 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is a ring of mist that'll come up, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and you could almost walk into the mist, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And of course, the ice is the ice skating rink. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The genesis started with water. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Grand Rapids actually took the rapids out the river there 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for flooding reasons. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And I started to play with the idea 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of bringing it back a little bit. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The starting of the rings, the terraced rings, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 started as, if you took a drop of water 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in the center of the pool, and let them come out, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and then it spun into an idea of as much 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 about astronomy and about the stars, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so it's almost like pulling the stars into a pool of water. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's sort of a reflection of the night sky in the pool. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (group laughing and chattering) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 <v ->All right, this is it.
