9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 From Ancient Greece to the 20th century, [br]Aristotle, Sigmund Freud, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and numerous other scholars were all [br]looking for the same thing: eel testicles. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Freshwater eels, or Anguilla Anguilla,[br]could be found in rivers across Europe, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but no one had ever seen them mate. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And despite countless dissections, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 no researcher could find eel eggs[br]or identify their reproductive organs. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Devoid of data, naturalists proposed [br]various eel origin stories. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Aristotle suggested that eels spontaneously[br]emerged from mud. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Pliny the Elder argued eels rubbed [br]themselves against rocks, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and the subsequent scrapings [br]came to life. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Eels were said to hatch on rooftops,[br]manifest from the gills of other fish, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and even emerge from the [br]bodies of beetles. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But the true story of eel reproduction[br]is even more difficult to imagine. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And to solve this slippery mystery, [br]scholars 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 would have to rethink [br]centuries of research. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Today, we know the freshwater eel [br]lifecycle has five distinct stages: 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 larval leptocepheli, miniscule glass [br]eels, adolescent elvers, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 older yellow eels, and adult silver eels. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Given the radical physical differences [br]between these phases, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you’d be forgiven for assuming these [br]are different animals. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 In fact, that’s exactly what European[br]naturalists thought. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Researchers were aware of leptocepheli[br]and glass eels, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but no one guessed they were related[br]to the elvers and yellow eels 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 living hundreds of kilometers upstream. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Confusing matters more, eels don’t [br]develop sex organs until late in life. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And the entirety of their time in the[br]rivers of Europe 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 is essentially eel adolescence. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So when do eels reproduce, [br]and where do they do it? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Despite its name, the life of a freshwater[br]eel actually begins 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in the salty waters of [br]the Bermuda Triangle. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 At the height of the annual cyclone[br]season, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 thousands of three-millimeter eel larvae 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 drift out of the Sargasso Sea. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 From here, they follow migration [br]paths to North America and Europe–– 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 continents that were much [br]closer when eels 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 established these routes [br]40 million years ago. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Over the next 300 days, Anguilla Anguilla[br]larvae ride the ocean currents 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 6,500 km to the coast of Europe–– 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 making one of the longest [br]known marine migrations. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 By the time they arrive, they’ve grown [br]approximately 45 mm, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and transformed into semi-transparent [br]glass eels. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It’s not just their appearance [br]that’s changed. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 If most marine fish entered brackish[br]costal waters, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 their cells would swell with freshwater[br]in a lethal explosion. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But when glass eels reach the coast, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 their kidneys shift to retain more salt 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and maintain their blood’s [br]salinity levels. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Swarms of these newly freshwater [br]fish migrate up streams and rivers, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 sometimes piling on top of each other[br]to clear obstacles and predators. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Those that make it upstream develop[br]into opaque elvers. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Having finally arrived in their hunting[br]grounds, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 elvers begin to eat everything they [br]can fit in their mouths. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 These omnivores grow in proportion[br]to their diets, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and over the next decade they develop[br]into larger yellow eels. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 In this stage, they grow [br]to be roughly 80 cm, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and finally develop sexual organs. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But the last phase of eel life–– [br]and the secret of their reproduction–– 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 remains mysterious. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 In 1896, researchers identified [br]leptocepheli as larval eels, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and deduced that they had come to[br]Europe from somewhere in the Atlantic. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 However, to find this mysterious breeding[br]ground, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 someone would have to perform an [br]unthinkable survey of the ocean 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 for larvae no larger than 30mm. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Enter Johannes Schmidt. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 For the next 18 years, this Danish [br]oceanographer 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 trawled the coasts of four continents, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 hunting down increasingly [br]tiny leptocepheli. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Finally, in 1921, he found the smallest[br]larvae yet, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 on the southern edge [br]of the Sargasso Sea. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Despite knowledge of their round trip[br]migration, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 scientists still haven’t observed [br]mating in the wild, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 or found a single eel egg. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Leading theories suggest that eels[br]reproduce 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in a flurry of external fertilization, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in which clouds of sperm fertilize[br]free-floating eggs. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But the powerful currents and [br]tangling seaweed of the Sargasso Sea 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 have made this theory [br]difficult to confirm. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Researchers don’t even know where to look, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 since they’ve yet to successfully track [br]an eel 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 over the course of its return migration. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Until these challenges can be met, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the eel’s ancient secret will continue[br]slip through our fingers. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000
