0:00:04.420,0:00:08.875 [LIGHT INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC] 0:00:25.210,0:00:27.360 SHERYL BURGSTAHLER: Hello,[br]I'm Sheryl Burgstahler, 0:00:27.360,0:00:29.010 and I direct the DO-IT Center-- 0:00:29.010,0:00:33.460 Disabilities, Opportunities,[br]Internetworking and Technology. 0:00:33.480,0:00:35.790 And in that center, we[br]have numerous programs 0:00:35.790,0:00:39.090 funded by different agencies,[br]and the sole purpose 0:00:39.090,0:00:41.070 is to increase the[br]success of people 0:00:41.070,0:00:43.890 with disabilities,[br]particularly in college 0:00:43.890,0:00:46.490 onto careers but[br]everything else. 0:00:46.490,0:00:48.240 In DO-IT's Scholars[br]program, we've kind of 0:00:48.240,0:00:51.430 become like an extended family. 0:00:51.430,0:00:54.280 One of our DO-IT[br]Scholars, Dustine, 0:00:54.280,0:00:57.055 started the program in 2013. 0:00:57.055,0:00:59.770 DUSTINE: My name is Dustine,[br]and I'm a student here 0:00:59.770,0:01:02.290 at the University of[br]Washington School of Law, 0:01:02.290,0:01:06.128 pursuing a Juris Doctor degree, 0:01:06.128,0:01:09.700 hoping to graduate in June 2024. 0:01:09.700,0:01:13.240 From the classes, what I've[br]learned is learning how to-- 0:01:13.240,0:01:15.580 well, one of the big things[br]is to be a self-advocate. 0:01:15.580,0:01:17.080 You've got to[br]advocate for yourself. 0:01:17.080,0:01:20.200 I joined DO-IT when I was[br]a junior in high school. 0:01:20.200,0:01:22.660 So that was around[br]spring time, 2013. 0:01:22.660,0:01:25.340 I went back to DO-IT[br]the following summer. 0:01:25.340,0:01:27.460 It became somewhat of a[br]summer tradition for me 0:01:27.460,0:01:30.280 at least because I went[br]back to summer study, 0:01:30.280,0:01:33.400 helped out as a member[br]of the staff for-- 0:01:33.400,0:01:35.883 through, I think,[br]summer 2018, 0:01:35.883,0:01:38.637 which was right around the time[br]I graduated undergraduate 0:01:38.637,0:01:39.970 at the University of Washington. 0:01:39.970,0:01:44.350 One thing that has me coming[br]back to DO-IT all these years 0:01:44.350,0:01:47.120 is just knowing that it's[br]kind of where my roots are, 0:01:47.120,0:01:50.908 especially as a person[br]with a disability, Asperger syndrome, 0:01:50.908,0:01:54.010 or autism spectrum[br]disorder as it's now known. 0:01:54.010,0:01:56.728 But also just knowing[br]that with DO-IT, 0:01:56.728,0:01:59.020 it's also where I first[br]learned about disability rights 0:01:59.020,0:02:00.070 and history. 0:02:00.070,0:02:04.030 And so in undergrad I took up[br]disability studies as my minor 0:02:04.030,0:02:05.710 along with Law,[br]Societies and Justice, 0:02:05.710,0:02:07.300 and Political[br]Science as my majors. 0:02:07.300,0:02:10.121 But with disability[br]studies, I was able to get 0:02:10.121,0:02:12.130 more and more[br]involved with knowing 0:02:12.130,0:02:13.570 about those types-- 0:02:13.570,0:02:14.870 that type of history. 0:02:14.870,0:02:17.920 And so it actually[br]influenced the type of law 0:02:17.920,0:02:21.745 that I want to practice today,[br]which is disability rights. 0:02:21.745,0:02:24.980 [MARCHING BAND PLAYING] 0:02:24.980,0:02:27.970 Several activities that I've[br]done over the years 0:02:27.970,0:02:30.337 of me being undergrad at least-- 0:02:30.337,0:02:32.170 first and foremost, [br]the Husky Marching Band. 0:02:32.170,0:02:34.881 I was actually in the marching[br]band as a member of the piccolo section 0:02:34.881,0:02:36.207 all four years. 0:02:36.207,0:02:39.010 ["TEQUILA" SUNG IN UNISON] 0:02:39.010,0:02:43.240 I worked at the Commuter and[br]Transfer Commons in the HUB 0:02:43.240,0:02:44.980 during my junior[br]and senior years, 0:02:44.980,0:02:50.950 being there for anyone who has[br]any questions or inquiries. 0:02:50.950,0:02:54.760 It's a huge honor to be[br]selected for the Husky 100. 0:02:54.760,0:02:56.180 I looked at my phone. 0:02:56.180,0:02:58.977 I saw an email and it says,[br]"Congratulations, you just 0:02:58.977,0:03:00.310 got selected for the Husky 100." 0:03:00.310,0:03:01.450 And I was just like-- 0:03:01.450,0:03:03.070 I was like-- I was like this. 0:03:03.070,0:03:04.780 I was like, I can't[br]even believe it. 0:03:04.780,0:03:06.790 I can't even believe[br]I got nominated for-- 0:03:06.790,0:03:08.530 I got selected[br]for the Husky 100. 0:03:08.530,0:03:12.628 This past summer, I interned at[br]Washington Civil and Disability Advocate 0:03:12.628,0:03:14.699 The first-year law[br]school students, they have a class 0:03:14.699,0:03:17.440 called Legal Analysis, Research and Writing, 0:03:17.440,0:03:19.400 or LARW for short. 0:03:19.400,0:03:24.250 And so I was able to take what[br]I've learned from that class 0:03:24.250,0:03:27.100 during my first year[br]here at law school 0:03:27.100,0:03:30.250 and to apply it towards[br]drafting motions, 0:03:30.250,0:03:33.370 basically asking the[br]court to do something 0:03:33.370,0:03:35.690 in favor of your clients. 0:03:35.690,0:03:44.925 The DO-IT community has been[br]incredibly supportive of me. 0:03:44.925,0:03:48.010 They've been there[br]whenever I needed help 0:03:48.010,0:03:50.810 with getting accommodations[br]in undergrad. 0:03:50.810,0:03:52.810 They've been there for[br]me whenever I needed help 0:03:52.810,0:03:55.135 with personal statements and 0:03:55.135,0:03:57.230 even if I just needed to talk to someone. 0:03:57.230,0:03:59.162 So I want to give back. 0:03:59.162,0:04:03.430 And that's and being able to be a, [br]being a disability rights attorney 0:04:03.430,0:04:09.790 and hopefully causing[br]societal change for the good 0:04:09.790,0:04:13.848 would allow me to give back[br]to the disability community. 0:04:13.848,0:04:15.640 One of my first friends[br]that I met at DO-IT 0:04:15.640,0:04:20.011 is someone who has a[br]vision-related disability. 0:04:20.011,0:04:22.420 And so over time,[br]I've gotten the chance 0:04:22.420,0:04:27.400 to get to know her and have[br]conversations with her. 0:04:27.400,0:04:30.010 Having that type of[br]connection does kind of, 0:04:30.010,0:04:32.011 I guess, does kind of like bring, 0:04:32.011,0:04:35.537 I guess really increase my[br]motivation to become more, 0:04:35.537,0:04:38.021 I guess, aware and to educate[br]myself around those things. 0:04:38.021,0:04:42.134 And that has also[br]been impactful. 0:04:42.134,0:04:44.110 I just wanted to express[br]a moment of gratitude 0:04:44.110,0:04:47.850 for all of my mentors,[br]my friends, family members 0:04:47.850,0:04:51.100 and my parents for helping me 0:04:51.100,0:04:52.380 get to where I'm at right now. 0:04:52.380,0:04:54.130 Thank you for all that[br]you've done for me. 0:04:54.130,0:04:57.040 DO-IT, you are an inspiration. 0:04:57.040,0:04:59.422 You are an inspiration. 0:04:59.422,0:05:08.035 And I'm very fortunate to[br]be a part of that, be a part of that group. 0:05:08.035,0:05:11.430 And I hope I'm[br]making you all proud. 0:05:11.430,0:05:13.701 I really do. 0:05:13.701,0:05:15.000 [LIGHT INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC]
