0:00:01.176,0:00:04.571 In this tutorial I'm going to show you how you can layer different background materials on top of each 0:00:04.571,0:00:08.150 other. Now the first thing to talk about is how backgrounds work. 0:00:08.150,0:00:14.211 When we drag a backgroun on, this automatically goes onto the Background Layer. 0:00:14.211,0:00:19.148 And if you click on the layers tab on the right hand side, you can see that here. 0:00:19.148,0:00:22.570 And each time I drag a background on, that replaces whatever 0:00:22.570,0:00:26.149 was on the background layer with a new background. 0:00:26.149,0:00:30.250 Now the potential problem with this is that you might want to layer 0:00:30.250,0:00:35.318 two different background materials on top of each other to make a more complex 0:00:35.318,0:00:37.486 background. So the way I would go about doing that, is 0:00:37.486,0:00:41.613 firstly to create a new layer. And to create a new layer 0:00:41.613,0:00:44.225 you click on the little add layer icon here with the little plus symbol 0:00:44.225,0:00:49.293 you can see that's now added a new layer called layer 2. You can 0:00:49.293,0:00:53.708 You can reorder layers very easily, and I'm actually going to drag this layer 2 0:00:53.708,0:00:58.096 in between my background and layer 1. But also if you click on it's name, 0:00:58.096,0:01:05.019 you can actually rename the layer. So I'm going to call this background 2 0:01:05.019,0:01:08.761 Now I want to use this material that's covering the background 0:01:08.761,0:01:13.378 as a material. So the way I want to do is firstly to select the background layer 0:01:13.378,0:01:19.832 and now I can actually select this material. And what I'm going to do is cut that 0:01:19.832,0:01:26.727 using the button at the top. Go back to my Backgroun 2 and then paste it. 0:01:26.727,0:01:34.198 So now this material is now set on my Background 2 layer. The great thing about this is that now when 0:01:34.198,0:01:39.773 I drag other backgrounds onto my page, like this blue one 0:01:39.773,0:01:43.523 you can see that it doesn't replace what's on my background 2 layer. 0:01:43.523,0:01:47.043 and you can see from this preview here, that the new background 0:01:47.043,0:01:50.211 is actually sat on my background layer. So now, if I wanted 0:01:50.211,0:01:54.246 to cut this material to make a secondary part of my background 0:01:54.246,0:02:02.880 I can select it, use the scissor tool, and hold on Shift to make a straight line cut 0:02:02.880,0:02:10.252 Then throw that bit away. I want to just add a shadow here. 0:02:10.252,0:02:15.288 And now I've effectively got a composite background. When you want to start adding 0:02:15.288,0:02:18.684 embellishments and what have you to your page, you should then 0:02:18.684,0:02:25.267 go back and select Layer 1, and then you can drag embellishments on as 0:02:25.267,0:02:30.674 normal without ever selecting any of those background elements' 0:02:30.674,0:02:35.037 You'll also notice using this method, going back to the Backgrounds tab, 0:02:35.037,0:02:41.959 if I were to drag on new Backgrounds, all of that still works. But it only replaces the bottom Background 0:02:41.959,9:59:59.000 layer. It leaves this piece of additional material I've added here 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 on top.
