9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 LT: I was grateful. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 (Laughter) 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 LT: And -- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 JF: And -- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 LT: Wait, no, it's really important[br]because this is another example 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of how women are overlooked,[br]put aside, marginalized, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 there's been very little[br]research done on us, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 even though we volunteered lots of times. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 JF: That's for sure. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 (Laughter) 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 LT: No-- this is really exciting, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and you all will be interested in this, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the Harvard Medical School Study has shown 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that women who have[br]close female friendships 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 are less likely to develop impairments -- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 physical impairments as they age, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and they are likely to seem to be living[br]much more vital, exciting -- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 JF: and longer -- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 LT: and joyful lives. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 JF: We life five years longer than men. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 LT: I think I'd trade the years for joy. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 (Laughter) 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 LT: And, but the most important part[br]is they found -- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the results were so exciting[br]and so conclusive -- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the researchers found 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that not having close female friends[br]is detrimental to your health, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 as much as smoking or being overweight. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 JF: Well -- and there's[br]something else, too -- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 LT: I've said my part, so ... 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 (Laughter) 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 JF: Okay, well listen to my part,[br]because there's an additional thing. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Because they only -- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 for years, decades -- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 they only researched men when they[br]were trying to understand stress, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 only very recently have they researched[br]what happens to women when we're stressed, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and it turns out that[br]when we're stressed --women, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 our bodies get flooded by oxytocin. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Which is a feel-good, calming, [br]stress reducing hormone. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Which also is increased[br]when we're with our women friends. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And I do think that's one reason[br]why we live longer. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And I feel so bad for men[br]because they don't have that. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Testosterone in men diminishes[br]the effects of oxytocin. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 LT: Well when you and I[br]and Dolly made "9 to 5" -- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 JF: Oh -- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 LT: We laughed, we did,[br]we laughed so much, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we found we had so much in common. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And we're so different. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Here she is like Hollywood royalty, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I'm like a tough kid from Detroit, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 she's a southern kid[br]from a poor town in Tennessee, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and we found we were so in sync as women, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and we must have-- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we laughed until we must have added[br]at least a decade onto our lifespans. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 JF: I think -- we sure[br]crossed our legs a lot. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 (Laughter) 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 JF: If you know what I mean. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 LT: I think we all know what you mean. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 PM: You're adding[br]decades to our lives right now. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So among the books that Jane[br]sent us both to read on female friendship, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 was one by a woman we admire greatly,[br]Sister Joan Chittister, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 who said about female friendship 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that women friends[br]are not just a social act, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 they're a spiritual act. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Do you think of your friends as spiritual? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Do they add something[br]spiritual to you life? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 LT: Spiritual -- I absolutely think that. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Because --especially people[br]you've known a long time -- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 people you've spent time with, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I can see the spiritual essence[br]inside them, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the tenderness, the vulnerability. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 There's actually kind of a love,[br]an element of love in the relationship. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I just see deeply into your soul. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 PM: Do you think that, Jane? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 LT: But I have special powers. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 JF: Well there's all kinds of friends. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 There's you know, business friends,[br]and party friends, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I got a lot of those. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But the oxytocin producing friendships, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 they have -- they feel spiritual[br]because it's a heart opening, right? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You know, we go deep. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And I find that I shed tears a lot[br]with my intimate friends. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Not because I'm sad but because[br]I'm so touched and inspired by them. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 LT: And you know one of you's[br]going to go soon. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 (Laughter) 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 PM: Well two of us are sitting here, Lily,[br]which one are you talking about? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 (Laughter) 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And I always think when women[br]talk about their friendships, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that men always look a little mystified. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 What are the differences,[br]in your opinion, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 between men friendships[br]and women friendships? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 JF: There's a lot of difference, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and I think we have to have[br]a lot of empathy for men -- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 (Laughter) 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that they don't have what we have, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 which I think may be why they die sooner. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I have a lot of compassion for men 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 because women -- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 no kidding -- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 women's relationships, our friendships[br]are full disclosure, we go deep. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 They're revelatory. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We risk vulnerability --[br]this is something men don't do. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I mean how many times have I asked you,[br]"am I doing okay?" 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 "Did I really screw up there?" 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 PM: You're doing great. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 (Laughter) 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 JF: But I mean, we ask questions like that[br]of our women friends and men don't. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You know people describe women's[br]relationships as face-to-face, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 whereas men's friendships[br]are more side by side. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 LT: I mean most of the time[br]men don't want to reveal their emotions, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 they want to bury deeper feelings. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I mean that's the general,[br]conventional thought. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 They would rather go off in their man cave[br]and watch a game or hit gold balls, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 or talk about sports, or hunting,[br]or cars, or have sex. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I mean it's just the kind of --[br]it's a more manly behavior. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 (Laughter) 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 JF: You meant they talk about sex. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 LT: I meant they might have sex 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 if they could get somebody[br]in their man cave to -- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 (Laughter) 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 JF: You know something really though[br]that I find very interesting. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And again, psychologists didn't know this[br]until relatively recently. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Men are born every bit[br]as relational as women are. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 If you look at films of newborn[br]baby boys and girls, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you'll see the baby boys[br]just like the girls, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 gazing into their mother's eyes, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you know, needing that relational[br]exchange of energy. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 When the mother looks away[br]they could see the dismay on the child, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 even the boy would cry. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 They need relationship. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So the question is why, as they[br]grow older, does that change? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And the answer is patriarchal culture, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 which says to boys and young men,[br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that to be needing of relationship, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to be emotional with someone, is girly. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But a real man is doesn't ask[br]directions or express a need, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 they don't go to doctors if they feel bad. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 They don't ask for help. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 There's a quote that I really like, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 "Men fear that becoming we[br]will erase his I." 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You know, his sense of self. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Whereas women's self of self[br]has always been kind of porous. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But our we is our saving grace,[br]it's what makes us strong. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It's not that we're better than men, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we just don't have[br]our masculinity to prove. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 LT: And well -- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 JF: That's a Gloria Steinem quote. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 LT: No, I know -- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 JF: So we can express our humanity -- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 LT: I know who Gloria Steinem is. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 JF: I know you know who she is, [br]but I think it's a -- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 (Laughter) 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 No but it's a great quote I think. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We're not better than men, we just[br]don't have our masculinity to prove. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And that's really important. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 LT: But men are so[br]inculcated in the culture 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to be comfortable in the patriarchy. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And we're got to make[br]something different happen. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 JF: Women's friendships are like[br]a renewable source of power. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 LT: Well that's what's exciting[br]about this subject, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 because female friendships[br]are just a hop to our sisterhood, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and sisterhood can be[br]a very powerful force, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to give the world -- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to make it what it should be -- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the things that humans desperately need. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 PM: It is why we're talking about it, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 because women's friendships are, [br]as you said, Jane, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 a renewable source of power. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So how do we use that power? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 JF: Well, women are the fastest growing[br]demogrpahic in the world, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 especially older women. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And if we harness our power,[br]we can change the world. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And guess what? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We need to. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 (Applause) 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And we need to do it soon. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And one of the things[br]that we need to do -- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and we can do it as women -- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 for one thing, we kind of set[br]the consumer standards. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We need to consume less. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We in the Western world[br]need to consume less 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and when we buy things, we need to[br]buy things that are made locally, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 when we buy food, we need to buy food[br]that's grown locally. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We are the ones that need to[br]get off the grid, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we need to make ourselves[br]independent from fossil fuels. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And the fossil fuel companies -- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the Exxons and Shell Oils [br]and those bad guys -- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 cause they are -- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 are going to tell us that we can't do it[br]without going back to the Stone Age. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You know, that the alternatives[br]just aren't quite there yet, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and that's not true. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 There are countries in the world right now 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that are living mostly on renewable[br]energy and doing just fine. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And they tell us that if we do[br]ween ourselves off fossil fuel 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that we're going to be[br]back in the Stone Age, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and if fact, if we begin[br]to use renewable energy, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and not drill in the Artic, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and not drill -- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 LT: Oh, boy. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 JF: And not drill[br]in the Alberta Tar Sands -- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Right. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 JF: That we will be, there will be more[br]democracy and more jobs 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and it's women that are[br]going to lead the way. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 LT: Maybe we have the momentum[br]to start the Third-wave Feminist Movement 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with our sisterhood around the world, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with women we don't see,[br]women we may never meet, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but we join together that way, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 because -- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Aristotle said, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 most people--people would die[br]without male friendships -- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the operative word here is male -- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 because they thought that friendships[br]should be between equals 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and women were not considered equal -- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 JF: They thought we didn't[br]have souls even, the Greeks. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 LT: No, exactly.
