0:06:03.784,0:06:05.744 This Shaigiya person[br]has actually invited me for a drink. 0:06:05.744,0:06:07.381 I don't know how it happened." 0:06:07.381,0:06:10.188 (Applause) 0:06:10.188,0:06:14.172 So what we are doing is, we are not giving [br]him a chance to be a generous person 0:06:14.172,0:06:16.385 because we are giving him an excuse[br]for being cheap 0:06:16.385,0:06:21.066 and we are not actually encouraging him [br]to do do anything, 0:06:21.066,0:06:25.402 so this enforces the stereotype, [br]it makes him more and more cheap. 0:06:25.402,0:06:27.406 And this can be seen in our society. 0:06:27.406,0:06:30.066 One of the things that racism causes[br]is what we call self-hatred. 0:06:30.066,0:06:34.602 When a person is constantly subjected to racism, 0:06:34.602,0:06:36.346 they start to question themselves. 0:06:36.346,0:06:37.687 They start to hate themselves. 0:06:37.687,0:06:40.066 It's like, "Oh, I'm black, maybe there is [br]something wrong with my color, 0:06:40.066,0:06:41.627 because people are making fun of me, 0:06:41.627,0:06:43.556 my hair is nappy, there is [br]something wrong with nappy hair." 0:06:43.556,0:06:45.637 And then you become embarrassed of who you are. 0:06:45.637,0:06:47.585 And we can see this in the Sudanese society. 0:06:47.585,0:06:50.785 Some of our sisters, they're bleaching [br]their skin with toxic chemicals 0:06:50.785,0:06:53.503 because society tells them that [br]if you become white, 0:06:53.503,0:06:57.354 if you behave like white people,[br]then you become a better person. 0:06:57.354,0:07:00.195 (Applause) 0:07:02.424,0:07:05.669 And so you see a Sudanese person [br]goes to Egypt, he stays in Egypt for two months, 0:07:05.669,0:07:07.424 and he comes back as an Egyptian. 0:07:07.424,0:07:09.629 He stays in Saudi Arabia, [br]he comes back as a Saudi Arabian, 0:07:09.629,0:07:12.797 because we don't have a reason [br]to be proud of ourselves, 0:07:12.797,0:07:15.828 because we have racism within ourselves. 0:07:15.828,0:07:20.452 So if you consider self-hatred[br]– (Applause) – 0:07:20.452,0:07:24.096 and you look at the Sudanese society, [br]you see a lot of self-hatred. 0:07:24.096,0:07:26.004 One other thing that racism does is 0:07:26.004,0:07:29.662 it creates more racism, [br]what we call reverse racism, 0:07:29.681,0:07:32.855 and reverse racism is when [br]somebody is being racist towards you 0:07:32.855,0:07:36.850 and you don't want to hate yourself, [br]so you say, "Hey, I'll just hate you 0:07:36.850,0:07:39.849 and I'll become racist towards you," [br]and this will create a head-on collision 0:07:39.849,0:07:42.224 and that can be seen[br]in the African-American struggle. 0:07:42.224,0:07:44.237 It lead to the rise of militant groups, 0:07:44.237,0:07:47.353 we have the Black Panthers, [br]the Black Panthers is a militant group. 0:07:47.353,0:07:51.048 When the average African-American [br]was straightening his hair and lightening his skin, 0:07:51.048,0:07:53.842 the Black Panthers, they were growing afros [br]and taking the AK47 0:07:53.842,0:07:55.941 and then that created more violence. 0:07:55.941,0:07:58.378 The white people called them niggers,[br]they called them wiggers. 0:07:58.378,0:08:00.500 You call me chocolate,[br]I'll call you vanilla. 0:08:00.500,0:08:05.386 And then it just became[br]a conflict within the society. 0:08:05.386,0:08:07.320 So racism leads to more racism, 0:08:07.320,0:08:09.255 and we can see this in our society here. 0:08:09.255,0:08:11.267 Some tribes, they never get along here in Sudan, 0:08:11.267,0:08:14.548 because one tribe might have started this [br]and became racist against this tribe, 0:08:14.548,0:08:16.100 and now they are racist against each other 0:08:16.100,0:08:17.772 and this leads to nowhere. 0:08:17.772,0:08:20.588 So what's being done[br]to fight racism in Sudan? 0:08:20.588,0:08:23.203 Well, I'm actually here[br]to talk about a group of people. 0:08:23.203,0:08:25.478 I'm very honored[br]to be a member of this group. 0:08:25.478,0:08:28.481 We call it the Unity House,[br]and what we do is – 0:08:28.481,0:08:31.340 shout out to the Unity House – 0:08:31.340,0:08:36.121 Big round of applause![br](Applause) 0:08:36.168,0:08:43.626 The Unity House is a group of artists, [br]musicians, writers and... yeah. 0:08:43.626,0:08:45.992 What we do is we fight racism through art. 0:08:45.992,0:08:49.125 We perform at open mic nights, 0:08:49.125,0:08:53.723 we perform at poetry events and we try [br]to fight racism through poetry and writing. 0:08:53.723,0:08:58.904 We also conduct workshops, [br]we have conducted twelve workshops 0:08:58.904,0:09:03.305 throughout the capital in high schools... [br]Why do we use arts to fight racism? 0:09:17.427,0:09:22.070 The thing with arts is that arts is a soft tool, [br]art is easy to accept, 0:09:22.070,0:09:24.771 like you saw the play[br]by Shawareea earlier, 0:09:24.771,0:09:26.928 like they're trying to send you[br]a very deep message 0:09:26.928,0:09:29.160 and you just see it in a form of entertainment, [br]it doesn't have to be rare 0:09:29.160,0:09:31.426 so that's what we do, 0:09:31.426,0:09:33.825 in performances we create scenarios, 0:09:33.825,0:09:36.665 in workshops what we do[br]is we usually work with artists, 0:09:36.665,0:09:38.547 so we get them to feel comfortable first 0:09:38.547,0:09:41.995 and then we start talking about racism, [br]and then we create scenarios. 0:09:42.011,0:09:44.541 One of the workshops we were working on, 0:09:44.541,0:09:48.141 poets from Aldamazeen, this one girl [br]at the beginning of the workshop, 0:09:48.141,0:09:52.504 she introduced herself, she said, [br]"My name is so so, and I'm a war poet." 0:09:52.504,0:09:53.999 I said, "What is a war poet?" 0:09:53.999,0:09:59.264 She said, "I write poetry to provoke people [br]and encourage people to fight the rebels." 0:09:59.264,0:10:00.864 That was her idea. 0:10:00.864,0:10:05.143 After five days, after the workshops finished,[br]she performed the piece. 0:10:05.143,0:10:09.300 And in that piece she was talking about [br]building a house with her lover, 0:10:09.300,0:10:10.914 her and her lover building a house. 0:10:10.914,0:10:13.165 So I called her and said, [br]"What is this that you're talking about? 0:10:13.165,0:10:15.400 Like, what does this[br]have to do with racism?" 0:10:15.400,0:10:21.024 She said, "My lover is the rebels that I'm fighting [br]and the house is Sudan that I'm trying to build." 0:10:21.024,0:10:26.664 (Applause) 0:10:26.664,0:10:28.164 So the whole idea changed 0:10:28.164,0:10:31.465 because we just got together and we started [br]talking and we started creating scenarios. 0:10:31.465,0:10:33.023 And the power of scenario is 0:10:33.023,0:10:36.228 that sometimes you don't know something is wrong [br]until we put you in that position. 0:10:36.228,0:10:40.224 I was doing a workshop in [br]Abubaker Alamin High School in Omdurman for girls 0:10:40.224,0:10:45.884 and this one girl, she said, "A man proposed to my sister[br]and we rejected him because of his tribe, 0:10:45.884,0:10:47.228 and my sister loved this man very much 0:10:47.228,0:10:49.747 and then she got depressed and [br]she dropped out of school for two years now." 0:10:49.747,0:10:51.706 And I said, "Is this right?" 0:10:51.706,0:10:54.087 She couldn't tell me it was wrong,[br]so she said, 0:10:54.087,0:10:58.440 "You know, we are tribe, we have our traditions, [br]we can't give our daughter to anybody." 0:10:58.440,0:11:00.185 So I tried to switch things a little bit. 0:11:00.185,0:11:02.165 I said, "What if the man that you love [br]comes to propose to you, 0:11:02.165,0:11:04.280 and your family rejects him[br]because of his tribe?" 0:11:04.280,0:11:07.348 So she was quiet,[br]so then I tried to flip it again. 0:11:07.348,0:11:09.584 I said, "Is your mom and dad[br]from the same tribe?" 0:11:09.584,0:11:12.182 She said, "Yes."
