9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 1, 2, 3[br]AAAAAAAAHHHHHHH! 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Hi everyone, BRATthony Greeentano[br]here, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the internet's busiest music nerd.[br]And it's time for a review 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of this new record "Brat" from Charli xcx. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Here we have the 6th official full-length[br]studio album from pop-singer and 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 songwriter Ms Charli xcx. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 One of my most anticipated albums of[br]the year, why? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Well, over the past decade in my eyes,[br]Charli has grown into one of the most 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 creative, unique, and pioneering forces[br]in current day pop music. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And her evolution has been interesting[br]to watch, to say the least. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I'm not a fan of her early work, [br]truth be told, but 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 today it serves as an interesting[br]reference point. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Uh, for what she is doing on this[br]record. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The "True Romance" and "Sucker" eras of [br]her career, uh, did bring some of 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 her biggest hits and features to date,[br]that is true, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but sonically, much of the music she was[br]dropping around this time wasn't... 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 very daring or even deep. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 At best, you could say it was catchy[br]and of-the-time. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Around the mid-2010s, though,[br]is when Charli's music 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 really began to push boundaries. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Crossing over creatively with writers and[br]producers from the 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 up-and-coming PC music label. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I'm talking people like Danny L Harle[br]and EASYFUN, A.G Cook, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and the late SOPHIE, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 who at the time were gaining[br]quite the reputation for 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 revitalizing a lot of Y2k-era pop[br]aesthetics but with a 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 hyper-futuristic, jittery sound. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And our first taste of this new direction[br]came in the form of 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Charli xcx's "Vroom Vroom" EP in 2016. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Which some critics just did not know what[br]to make of at the time, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and while it was my EP of the year[br]that year, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I could still see how this would have [br]turned a lot of people off if they 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 came into Charli's music having certain[br]expectations, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 given that she was a pop artist. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Because "Vroom Vroom" in tone, is,[br]at points, kind of dark, and visceral 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and groovy in a weird way. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Campy, too, with some tracks varying so[br]wildly from part to part that, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 uh, you could almost take what she was[br]doing here as, like, a joke or novelty. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 However, the tracks on this EP are[br]deadly serious. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And were also a new, bold step for [br]pop music as well as in a hot moment, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 for both Charli and PC Music creatively. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Because at this point, I think Charli became[br]the perfect conduit for what they were 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 trying to channel this detailed and [br]retro-futuristic, reconstruction 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of 2000s pop music, that blur the lines[br]between the satirical, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but also reverent. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Meanwhile, Charli's creative chemistry[br]with A.G and SOPHIE 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 allowed her, I think, to experiment more[br]and mature as a songwriter. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Allowing her the freedom to drop[br]zany bangers as well as 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 sleek-powerful anthems. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Songs with strange structures, or very [br]unlikely features, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 A lot of these ideas and concepts were[br]more or less road-tested on 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the mixtape she dropped back in 2017, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and then in my eyes, it was all[br]fully realized on her excellent 2019 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 "Charli" record. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Now, over the years, as Charli has[br]developed this new sound, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 her writing has offered more depth,[br]has become more personal and intimate, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 especially on her pandemic album,[br]"How I'm Feeling Now". 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But I think Charli's writing has grown[br]more conceptual, too. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 With her presentation as this posh,[br]English party girl on many of her songs 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 has more or less become this exaggerated[br]character she plays into. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 However, in a way, Charli's instantly[br]recognizable sound and unique place 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in the pop landscape, uh, became both a [br]blessing and a curse at the dawn of the 2020s. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Because her style had gone from[br]challenging to kind of definable 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with this newly-minted "hyperpop"[br]term that was being thrown onto everybody 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 who sounded even vaguely like her or[br]100gecs. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And she quickly went on to strip away[br]many of the "hyper" characteristics 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of her music on her next album, "Crash",[br]working with a totally new team of producers 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And while I can't deny the record does[br]feature some respectable hits, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I have to ask: At what cost? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Because "Crash" did very measurably have[br]quite a bit less character than 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 anything that Charli had dropped[br]in recent years at the time 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Which brings us to today. Charli's [br]latest album cycle here, "BRAT". 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Where I think she's genuinely reconnecting[br]with the trajectory that has brought her 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to this point and made her a special artist[br]to begin with. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Even EASYFUN and A.G Cook are back[br]in the mix on this production side, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 on a whole lot of tracks, uh, numerous[br]others too. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 There are even references to A.G Cook[br]on some of the lyrics to this record 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 as quite a bit of meta-commentary[br]is going on as well. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You can really tell that Charli is fully[br]embracing the impact she's had on pop music 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in recent years, and really using it as[br]more of a strength than a weakness 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that she can be pigeon holed into. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And I think that's something she can[br]do confidently because 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 her and A.G Cook aren't just merely[br]trying to, y'know, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 revive some kind of hyperpop trend on[br]this LP. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I mean, for sure, Charli's goal and focus[br]is to give us this autotuned, bold, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and hard-hitting homage to 2000s era [br]pop music, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but this time around we have a refreshing[br]focus on dance-pop, on EDM from that era, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 on electropop from that era, club bangers[br]generally. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 With a pretty aggressive edge, making this[br]LP very worthy of the title "BRAT". 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Because this record is meant to be[br]danced to. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And, at points, cry to. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 As I think Charli's writing is more mature[br]and thoughtful than it's ever been. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 For one, her party girl persona takes[br]a bit of a dark turn, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 or at least gets deflated a bit 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 as she reveals that it's kind of a[br]mask, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and that she doesn't always feel[br]like she's worthy of being there at the party 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 or that her and the party are a bit[br]at odds. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Meanwhile, "i think about it all the time"[br]sees Charli musing about whether or not 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 she can continue her career in the way[br]she currently is, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 while also becoming a mother, which she[br]very clearly has interest in at some point. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Skipping ahead here, it's also kind of[br]crazy how narratively, this contrasts so hard 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with her going back full into party mode[br]on the closing track, "365". 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Of course, there are notes of nostalgia[br]on this album, too, that is very much 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in line with tracks like "1999", most[br]notably on "Rewind", 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but this song specifically is more about[br]Charli missing the older aspects 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of her life before the fame. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Between sticky choruses on this track,[br]she delivers her verses in this way that 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 kinda comes off like, conflicted internal[br]monologue, or like 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 she's musically journaling. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 There are lots of tracks on this thing too[br]that deal in love. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But these songs narratively feel vastly[br]different from previous singles like 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 "Good Ones", for example. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Tracks where historically, Charli can be[br]seen running away from love 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 or being a bit self-effacing and talking [br]about how she's fucking it all up. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Instead, on songs such as the really[br]infectious 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 singing "Talk talk to me!" 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 as, uh, as well laughs[br]as the very cinematic 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 singing "Everything is romantic" 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Yeah, Charli can be seen accepting[br]love and doing quite a few shoutouts 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to her fiancé George. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But yes, between this and numerous nods[br]to wanting to have maybe a more normal 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 life at some point, Charli really presents[br]some interesting internal conflicts 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 throughout this album, which we also[br]hear as well on tracks where she is 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 singing about things like friendship[br]and sharing the limelight with other women. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I mean, historically Charli is very[br]pro-woman, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 especially when it comes to supporting[br]other artists
