0:00:00.000,0:00:02.628 1, 2, 3[br]AAAAAAAAHHHHHHH! 0:00:02.643,0:00:05.013 Hi everyone, BRATthony Greeentano[br]here, 0:00:05.013,0:00:09.013 the internet's busiest music nerd.[br]And it's time for a review 0:00:09.013,0:00:12.441 of this new record "Brat" from Charli xcx. 0:00:12.441,0:00:17.862 Here we have the 6th official full-length[br]studio album from pop-singer and 0:00:17.862,0:00:20.422 songwriter Ms Charli xcx. 0:00:20.422,0:00:24.572 One of my most anticipated albums of[br]the year, why? 0:00:24.572,0:00:28.812 Well, over the past decade in my eyes,[br]Charli has grown into one of the most 0:00:28.812,0:00:32.812 creative, unique, and pioneering forces[br]in current day pop music. 0:00:32.812,0:00:36.075 And her evolution has been interesting[br]to watch, to say the least. 0:00:36.075,0:00:39.055 I'm not a fan of her early work, [br]truth be told, but 0:00:39.055,0:00:42.253 today it serves as an interesting[br]reference point. 0:00:42.253,0:00:44.663 Uh, for what she is doing on this[br]record. 0:00:44.663,0:00:48.920 The "True Romance" and "Sucker" eras of [br]her career, uh, did bring some of 0:00:48.920,0:00:51.541 her biggest hits and features to date,[br]that is true, 0:00:51.541,0:00:55.341 but sonically, much of the music she was[br]dropping around this time wasn't... 0:00:55.341,0:00:57.451 very daring or even deep. 0:00:57.451,0:01:00.562 At best, you could say it was catchy[br]and of-the-time. 0:01:00.562,0:01:03.582 Around the mid-2010s, though,[br]is when Charli's music 0:01:03.582,0:01:05.586 really began to push boundaries. 0:01:05.586,0:01:08.736 Crossing over creatively with writers and[br]producers from the 0:01:08.736,0:01:10.515 up-and-coming PC music label. 0:01:10.515,0:01:14.775 I'm talking people like Danny L Harle[br]and EASYFUN, A.G Cook, 0:01:14.775,0:01:15.815 and the late SOPHIE, 0:01:15.815,0:01:18.574 who at the time were gaining[br]quite the reputation for 0:01:18.574,0:01:22.896 revitalizing a lot of Y2k-era pop[br]aesthetics but with a 0:01:22.896,0:01:25.280 hyper-futuristic, jittery sound. 0:01:25.280,0:01:29.380 And our first taste of this new direction[br]came in the form of 0:01:29.380,0:01:33.027 Charli xcx's "Vroom Vroom" EP in 2016. 0:01:33.027,0:01:36.295 Which some critics just did not know what[br]to make of at the time, 0:01:36.295,0:01:39.601 and while it was my EP of the year[br]that year, 0:01:39.601,0:01:43.601 I could still see how this would have [br]turned a lot of people off if they 0:01:43.601,0:01:47.033 came into Charli's music having certain[br]expectations, 0:01:47.033,0:01:49.133 given that she was a pop artist. 0:01:49.133,0:01:54.335 Because "Vroom Vroom" in tone, is,[br]at points, kind of dark, and visceral 0:01:54.335,0:01:56.688 and groovy in a weird way. 0:01:56.688,0:02:00.931 Campy, too, with some tracks varying so[br]wildly from part to part that, 0:02:00.931,0:02:05.361 uh, you could almost take what she was[br]doing here as, like, a joke or novelty. 0:02:05.361,0:02:08.835 However, the tracks on this EP are[br]deadly serious. 0:02:08.835,0:02:14.190 And were also a new, bold step for [br]pop music as well as in a hot moment, 0:02:14.190,0:02:17.368 for both Charli and PC Music creatively. 0:02:17.368,0:02:22.218 Because at this point, I think Charli became[br]the perfect conduit for what they were 0:02:22.218,0:02:26.879 trying to channel this detailed and [br]retro-futuristic, reconstruction 0:02:26.879,0:02:32.341 of 2000s pop music, that blur the lines[br]between the satirical, 0:02:32.341,0:02:33.664 but also reverent. 0:02:33.664,0:02:36.953 Meanwhile, Charli's creative chemistry[br]with A.G and SOPHIE 0:02:36.953,0:02:40.701 allowed her, I think, to experiment more[br]and mature as a songwriter. 0:02:40.701,0:02:43.957 Allowing her the freedom to drop[br]zany bangers as well as 0:02:43.957,0:02:45.539 sleek-powerful anthems. 0:02:45.539,0:02:49.539 Songs with strange structures, or very [br]unlikely features, 0:02:49.539,0:02:54.310 A lot of these ideas and concepts were[br]more or less road-tested on 0:02:54.310,0:02:57.033 the mixtape she dropped back in 2017, 0:02:57.033,0:03:01.201 and then in my eyes, it was all[br]fully realized on her excellent 2019 0:03:01.201,0:03:02.313 "Charli" record. 0:03:02.313,0:03:06.663 Now, over the years, as Charli has[br]developed this new sound, 0:03:06.663,0:03:10.493 her writing has offered more depth,[br]has become more personal and intimate, 0:03:10.493,0:03:13.190 especially on her pandemic album,[br]"How I'm Feeling Now". 0:03:13.190,0:03:16.134 But I think Charli's writing has grown[br]more conceptual, too. 0:03:16.134,0:03:21.564 With her presentation as this posh,[br]English party girl on many of her songs 0:03:21.564,0:03:26.216 has more or less become this exaggerated[br]character she plays into. 0:03:26.216,0:03:30.814 However, in a way, Charli's instantly[br]recognizable sound and unique place 0:03:30.814,0:03:37.895 in the pop landscape, uh, became both a [br]blessing and a curse at the dawn of the 2020s. 0:03:37.895,0:03:43.287 Because her style had gone from[br]challenging to kind of definable 0:03:43.287,0:03:48.866 with this newly-minted "hyperpop"[br]term that was being thrown onto everybody 0:03:48.866,0:03:52.370 who sounded even vaguely like her or[br]100gecs. 0:03:52.370,0:03:56.943 And she quickly went on to strip away[br]many of the "hyper" characteristics 0:03:56.943,0:04:02.985 of her music on her next album, "Crash",[br]working with a totally new team of producers 0:04:02.985,0:04:07.587 And while I can't deny the record does[br]feature some respectable hits, 0:04:07.587,0:04:09.747 I have to ask: At what cost? 0:04:09.747,0:04:13.747 Because "Crash" did very measurably have[br]quite a bit less character than 0:04:13.747,0:04:16.596 anything that Charli had dropped[br]in recent years at the time 0:04:16.596,0:04:20.927 Which brings us to today. Charli's [br]latest album cycle here, "BRAT". 0:04:20.927,0:04:25.665 Where I think she's genuinely reconnecting[br]with the trajectory that has brought her 0:04:25.665,0:04:28.600 to this point and made her a special artist[br]to begin with. 0:04:28.600,0:04:32.803 Even EASYFUN and A.G Cook are back[br]in the mix on this production side, 0:04:32.803,0:04:35.609 on a whole lot of tracks, uh, numerous[br]others too. 0:04:35.609,0:04:41.089 There are even references to A.G Cook[br]on some of the lyrics to this record 0:04:41.089,0:04:44.281 as quite a bit of meta-commentary[br]is going on as well. 0:04:44.281,0:04:49.252 You can really tell that Charli is fully[br]embracing the impact she's had on pop music 0:04:49.252,0:04:55.462 in recent years, and really using it as[br]more of a strength than a weakness 0:04:55.462,0:04:57.732 that she can be pigeon holed into. 0:04:57.732,0:05:00.689 And I think that's something she can[br]do confidently because 0:05:00.689,0:05:05.119 her and A.G Cook aren't just merely[br]trying to, y'know, 0:05:05.119,0:05:09.119 revive some kind of hyperpop trend on[br]this LP. 0:05:09.119,0:05:14.909 I mean, for sure, Charli's goal and focus[br]is to give us this autotuned, bold, 0:05:14.909,0:05:18.909 and hard-hitting homage to 2000s era [br]pop music, 0:05:18.909,0:05:24.840 but this time around we have a refreshing[br]focus on dance-pop, on EDM from that era, 0:05:24.840,0:05:28.712 on electropop from that era, club bangers[br]generally. 0:05:28.712,0:05:33.732 With a pretty aggressive edge, making this[br]LP very worthy of the title "BRAT". 0:05:33.732,0:05:36.142 Because this record is meant to be[br]danced to. 0:05:36.142,0:05:37.874 And, at points, cry to. 0:05:37.874,0:05:41.377 As I think Charli's writing is more mature[br]and thoughtful than it's ever been. 0:05:41.377,0:05:45.229 For one, her party girl persona takes[br]a bit of a dark turn, 0:05:45.229,0:05:47.086 or at least gets deflated a bit 0:05:47.086,0:05:49.976 as she reveals that it's kind of a[br]mask, 0:05:49.976,0:05:55.526 and that she doesn't always feel[br]like she's worthy of being there at the party 0:05:55.526,0:05:58.156 or that her and the party are a bit[br]at odds. 0:05:58.156,0:06:02.808 Meanwhile, "i think about it all the time"[br]sees Charli musing about whether or not 0:06:02.808,0:06:05.444 she can continue her career in the way[br]she currently is, 0:06:05.444,0:06:10.356 while also becoming a mother, which she[br]very clearly has interest in at some point. 0:06:10.356,0:06:14.806 Skipping ahead here, it's also kind of[br]crazy how narratively, this contrasts so hard 0:06:14.806,0:06:18.906 with her going back full into party mode[br]on the closing track, "365". 0:06:18.906,0:06:24.026 Of course, there are notes of nostalgia[br]on this album, too, that is very much 0:06:24.026,0:06:28.026 in line with tracks like "1999", most[br]notably on "Rewind", 0:06:28.026,0:06:31.286 but this song specifically is more about[br]Charli missing the older aspects 0:06:31.286,0:06:32.754 of her life before the fame. 0:06:32.754,0:06:37.358 Between sticky choruses on this track,[br]she delivers her verses in this way that 0:06:37.358,0:06:40.748 kinda comes off like, conflicted internal[br]monologue, or like 0:06:40.748,0:06:42.480 she's musically journaling. 0:06:42.480,0:06:45.850 There are lots of tracks on this thing too[br]that deal in love. 0:06:45.850,0:06:49.850 But these songs narratively feel vastly[br]different from previous singles like 0:06:49.850,0:06:50.969 "Good Ones", for example. 0:06:50.969,0:06:54.839 Tracks where historically, Charli can be[br]seen running away from love 0:06:54.839,0:06:59.021 or being a bit self-effacing and talking [br]about how she's fucking it all up. 0:06:59.021,0:07:02.002 Instead, on songs such as the really[br]infectious 0:07:02.002,0:07:03.666 singing "Talk talk to me!" 0:07:03.666,0:07:07.242 as, uh, as well laughs[br]as the very cinematic 0:07:07.242,0:07:09.464 singing "Everything is romantic" 0:07:09.464,0:07:14.267 Yeah, Charli can be seen accepting[br]love and doing quite a few shoutouts 0:07:14.267,0:07:15.773 to her fiancé George. 0:07:15.773,0:07:20.619 But yes, between this and numerous nods[br]to wanting to have maybe a more normal 0:07:20.619,0:07:24.883 life at some point, Charli really presents[br]some interesting internal conflicts 0:07:24.883,0:07:30.019 throughout this album, which we also[br]hear as well on tracks where she is 0:07:30.019,0:07:35.335 singing about things like friendship[br]and sharing the limelight with other women. 0:07:35.335,0:07:39.335 I mean, historically Charli is very[br]pro-woman, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 especially when it comes to supporting[br]other artists with her music 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 through features, through attention she[br]can throw their way with her creativity 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I mean, even look at the lyrics in the[br]music video to one of the big singles 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 from this record, "360". 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 That is the Charli that most fans[br]know and love. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 By that same token, there are[br]numerous songs on this record 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 where she is being very unfiltered[br]and just admitting 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 how, just, insecure and plagued with[br]fear she is sometimes. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 There's "Sympathy is a knife" where she[br]talks about, just, being so 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 self-conscious around this other woman[br]that she wishes for 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 a gun to shoot herself with. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Which is context that some fans might[br]even miss if they're mostly wrapped up 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in the roaring bass and fantastic string[br]hits going on the dance beat. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 There's also "GIrl, so confusing" where[br]Charli sings about the difficulties 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of letting people in, and navigating[br]the music industry among other 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 people who she may have a difficult[br]time connecting with, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 knowing how to trust. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The song seems to be very specifically[br]about a single person who 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 maybe she's been likened to by fans[br]but she doesn't fully see it. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 However, there's still a desire there[br]on some level to make the friendship 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 or the connection work. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Then the song "Von dutch" sees Charli[br]getting pretty aggressive and 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 combative lyrically. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Specifically in regards to someone who[br]doesn't seem to like her, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 maybe even is talking behind her back. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And her response to that is, essentially,[br]this big anthemic "Fuck you" here. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Where she's delivering some biting lyrics[br]about how this person may actually be 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 nothing if it weren't for some [br]"little dance" they're doing. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So, yeah, there are these intense[br]emotional peaks all over the album 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but the biggest bombshell of all of them[br]has to be the song, "So I". 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Which is very obviously a tribute to the [br]late great producer and songwriter SOHPIE 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 who actually collaborated with Charli[br]quite a few times, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 so consistently, in fact, from an outside[br]perspective, I don't think any fan of either 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Charli or SOPHIE would have presumed[br]anything of them and their connection. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Other than something along the lines of,[br]"Hey, they're collaborators, they have 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 big respect for each other, they[br]love each other, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 they're probably friends, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Charli, SOHPIE, SOPHIE, Charli,[br]name a more iconic duo-" 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But what Charli says on this track here[br]actually tells a very different story 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and is quite revealing in a way that[br]is actually pretty admirable. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Because the angle of the song is,[br]yes, very sad, obviously, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but it doesn't necessarily paint Charli [br]in the best light. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And, again, it's painfully sad and[br]has made me reflect on the tone 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that tributes in art or whatever[br]other medium often take. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 They usually end up being less about[br]the tributed person 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and more about the tributer's love and [br]adoration. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 "Look how great I think this person[br]is, who we all think is great." 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And Charli's song here does contain[br]quite a bit of praise for SOHPIE 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that's true, don't get me wrong. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But a lot of the track is actually an[br]admittance on Charli's part, with her 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 pretty much saying, "I was a shitty[br]friend." 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 "I kinda pushed this person away. I wish[br]I didn't." 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 "And now, I am plagued with an[br]insurmountable amount of regret." 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Which does make it a really tough listen[br]even if I think instrumentally and 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 melodically it is one of the strongest[br]showings here. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Narratively and emotionally there are[br]quite a few cuts that I think are 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 a bit lighter in tone, but they still[br]contribute a great amount of quality to 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the record and are just generally[br]fun and entertaining to listen to. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 There's "Club classics", which I thought[br]was hands down an incredible single to 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the album. Also, "B2b", which is just some[br]very straightforward, cut and dry, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 throwback, quality dance pop with a pretty[br]clear hot and cold, back and forth 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 love on the rocks type narrative 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 There's also "Apple", which is some[br]very groovy throwbacks synthpop too. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 All about a situation and dynamic that[br]Charli likens to a rotten apple, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 it's a situation she describes having to[br]escape from by car or by plane, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 There's "Mean girls", which is a[br]character portrait about exactly that, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with a soaring and anthemic chorus [br]plus a killer piano break 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that the entire track builds off of[br]from there. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And then at the very end there's [br]"365", which is this 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 version of the song "360" that kicks[br]the record off, this 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 mirrored, remix-as-reprise big finish. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 With some acid bass mixed in there[br]for good measure. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So, I love the way the record finishes.[br]Love the way it kicks off, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and the flow from moment to moment [br]generally is great. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It's to the point where certain tracks[br]in the leadup to the record 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that I thought were just kind of okay[br]sound better being reinforced 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 by the vibes and the aesthetics of the[br]surrounding songs on the album. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Because as I've heard the entire[br]thing now many times over, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I don't think there's a skip on it. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The production generally goes hard[br]as hell, it is vibrant, it is colorful, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 it is very visceral at times, aggressive,[br]but, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I can see some people kinda scratching[br]their heads at the fact that it doesn't 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 come across quite as futuristic as some[br]of those "hyperpop" cult classics 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in recent years. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But more importantly what I think[br]the production does on 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 this album is that it serves the songs. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It's sweet when it needs to be,[br]it's dynamic when it needs to be, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 it's lowkey or explosive when it needs[br]to be, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and there is still a very clear and[br]consistent aesthetic focused on 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the entire album that centers around[br]a certain era of pop and dance music. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So, I'm not necessarily disappointed[br]with this record not being as 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 ahead of the curve as a project like[br]"Charli", for example. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Especially considering that Charli xcx[br]copycats these days are abound. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The impact that people like her and A.G[br]and SOPHIE have had on the modern era 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of pop music, is not going anywhere[br]anytime soon. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And it's with that I say I loved[br]"BRAT", killer album, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and I think that this record proves that [br]Charli truly is a generational pop artist. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Which is why I'm feeling a strong 9,[br]to a 10 on this LP. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Tran- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 sition. Have you given this album a [br]listen? Did you love it? Did you hate it? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 What would you rate it?
