Hey guys,
Brady here with your daily tennis lessons.
So, we've got a pretty cool week coming,
you guys,
with
some
grips for your backhands.
I'm gonna check out two different grips for one-handed backhand hitters, and
a couple different grips for all you two-handed backhand hitters out there.
Today we're going to look at the eastern
backhand grip for all you one-handers out there,
and this would be Roger Federer's kind of
traditional grip when he drives his backhand,
you guys.
And it's such a good grip for one-handers because you have the ability to hit,
you know,
a really huge heavy flat ball,
and it's also pretty easy to get topspin in this backhand.
So,
let's look at the bevels on the grip right now.
So that very top position
is bevel number one,
and that is our focus today
for the eastern backhand grip.
What I'm trying to do
is line up
the base knuckle of my dominant
hand
from that index finger onto bevel number one.
So, it's really just
right in the middle of that top beam.
I'm trying to line up
that knuckle
along that top beam.
OK.
And so, right there
is my eastern backhand grip.
And as I said,
you know,
I'm gonna go ahead and hit a couple.
What's cool about this,
you guys,
is
the racket head,
when I hold the grip
in an eastern backhand grip,
you know,
and that set-up position
turns out really nicely away from me.
And so as I drop into
my downswing,
it just has this nice kind of
slightly shut position.
And again,
I
said this backhand is
great because you have the ability to flatten out pretty easily and hit those
kind of bigger passing shots.
And it's also really easy to roll at the last second.
It's easy on the wrist in the eastern grip
to just roll the wrist a little more
and get some extra topspin.
OK.
So,
base knuckle
on bevel number one,
and let's take a look at a couple one-handed eastern backhands.
Here we go.
OK.
There's a little flatter ball.
Let's do one more of those.
Nice pop,
and then I'm gonna roll my wrist a little bit.
And I get pretty
effortless topspin right there,
you guys.
So,
you know,
if you don't have a one-hander,
but you want to just kind of
go out and feel what Roger's feeling when he hits his backhand,
I think
this can't hurt to just go out and give this swing a try.
Not that you've got to commit and totally change your backhand,
but
tennis is great because if you know how to hold the racket
for these specific shots that we see the pros hitting,
it at least gives us an understanding
of how to hit differently than what we're comfortable with.
OK.
So that was the eastern backhand.
Hope you guys really enjoyed that.
