0:00:00.000,0:00:00.550 0:00:00.550,0:00:02.250 For those of you who[br]are just starting 0:00:02.250,0:00:04.700 to learn about the[br]history of China 0:00:04.700,0:00:07.000 in the first half[br]of the 20th century, 0:00:07.000,0:00:09.750 it can be a little[br]bit confusing. 0:00:09.750,0:00:13.040 So the goal of this video is[br]really to give you an overview, 0:00:13.040,0:00:17.070 to give you a scaffold, of[br]the history of the first half 0:00:17.070,0:00:19.980 of the 20th century in China. 0:00:19.980,0:00:22.680 So as we go into[br]the early 1900s, 0:00:22.680,0:00:27.390 you have the end of imperial[br]dynastic rule in China. 0:00:27.390,0:00:28.380 This is a big deal. 0:00:28.380,0:00:31.510 China has been ruled[br]by various dynasties 0:00:31.510,0:00:34.670 for multiple thousands of years. 0:00:34.670,0:00:38.340 But as you get into the[br]1900s, the dynastic rule, 0:00:38.340,0:00:43.190 in particular the Qing Dynasty,[br]was getting weaker and weaker. 0:00:43.190,0:00:45.670 It had suffered at the[br]hands of the Japanese 0:00:45.670,0:00:50.310 during the first Sino-Japanese[br]War at the end of the 1800s. 0:00:50.310,0:00:53.290 There was growing discontent[br]amongst the opposition 0:00:53.290,0:00:55.400 that the dynasty,[br]that the emperors, 0:00:55.400,0:00:57.440 were not modernizing[br]China enough. 0:00:57.440,0:00:59.121 Remember, this is[br]the early 1900s. 0:00:59.121,0:01:01.370 The rest of the world was[br]becoming a very, very modern 0:01:01.370,0:01:02.110 place. 0:01:02.110,0:01:06.380 China in the 1800s had suffered[br]at the hands of Western powers 0:01:06.380,0:01:10.220 who were essentially exerting[br]their own imperial influence 0:01:10.220,0:01:11.210 in China. 0:01:11.210,0:01:14.480 Many people felt that this[br]was because China was not 0:01:14.480,0:01:17.950 as modernized[br]economically, politically, 0:01:17.950,0:01:20.480 technologically as[br]it needed to be. 0:01:20.480,0:01:22.860 And so you fast-forward to 1911. 0:01:22.860,0:01:26.220 You have what is known as[br]the Wuchang Uprising, which 0:01:26.220,0:01:30.400 led to the overthrow[br]of the Qing dynasty. 0:01:30.400,0:01:35.510 By 1912, a Republic of China[br]was established in Nanjing. 0:01:35.510,0:01:38.470 So Nanjing right over here[br]was where it was established. 0:01:38.470,0:01:43.550 Beijing was, of course, the[br]seat of dynastic rule in China. 0:01:43.550,0:01:45.870 And the first[br]provisional president 0:01:45.870,0:01:51.530 of the Republic of China was Dr.[br]Sun Yat-sen, right over here. 0:01:51.530,0:01:53.700 And he actually did not[br]directly participate 0:01:53.700,0:01:55.970 in this final[br]uprising that finally 0:01:55.970,0:01:59.460 led to the overthrow[br]of the Qing dynasty. 0:01:59.460,0:02:02.660 He was actually in Denver at[br]the time, Denver, Colorado. 0:02:02.660,0:02:05.810 But he was a leading or one of[br]the leading figures in the run 0:02:05.810,0:02:07.830 up to this uprising, one[br]of the leading figures 0:02:07.830,0:02:10.449 who was providing[br]opposition and had tried 0:02:10.449,0:02:13.940 multiple times to[br]overthrow the dynasty. 0:02:13.940,0:02:17.090 Now along with Sun Yat-sen,[br]he was essentially in cahoots 0:02:17.090,0:02:21.820 with Yuan Shikai, who was a[br]general in the old dynasty. 0:02:21.820,0:02:24.270 And he has his own[br]fascinating history. 0:02:24.270,0:02:27.600 And Sun Yat-sen struck[br]a deal with Yuan Shikai, 0:02:27.600,0:02:30.250 who was very[br]politically ambitious. 0:02:30.250,0:02:33.830 Yuan Shikai said, hey, if I[br]can get the emperor Puyi, who 0:02:33.830,0:02:37.230 was the last emperor of China,[br]if I can get him to officially 0:02:37.230,0:02:40.740 abdicate, I want to[br]become the president. 0:02:40.740,0:02:43.320 So Sun Yat-sen agrees to this. 0:02:43.320,0:02:48.050 So Yuan Shikai[br]becomes the president 0:02:48.050,0:02:50.880 of the Republic of China. 0:02:50.880,0:02:52.450 But that wasn't enough for him. 0:02:52.450,0:02:56.030 He declares himself[br]emperor in 1915, 0:02:56.030,0:02:58.390 which you could imagine did[br]not make many people happy 0:02:58.390,0:03:01.370 because they were tired[br]of having emperors. 0:03:01.370,0:03:06.990 And by 1916, he abdicates[br]and he passes away, actually. 0:03:06.990,0:03:09.420 And this actually[br]begins a period 0:03:09.420,0:03:13.510 of extremely fragmented[br]rule for China. 0:03:13.510,0:03:16.440 Even under imperial rule,[br]the Chinese military 0:03:16.440,0:03:18.240 was not one consolidated body. 0:03:18.240,0:03:21.640 The military was controlled[br]by various warlords 0:03:21.640,0:03:25.590 in various regions that all[br]had allegiance to the emperor. 0:03:25.590,0:03:29.630 Once you have Yuan Shikai[br]abdicating and then dying 0:03:29.630,0:03:31.960 in 1916, and even[br]prior to that, when 0:03:31.960,0:03:33.980 he declared himself[br]emperor, people 0:03:33.980,0:03:37.220 did not want to pledge[br]allegiance to Yuan Shikai. 0:03:37.220,0:03:40.460 And so you had what is known[br]as the beginning of the Warlord 0:03:40.460,0:03:42.130 Era in China. 0:03:42.130,0:03:44.790 And this is a fragmented[br]period where you did not 0:03:44.790,0:03:47.850 have any centralized leadership. 0:03:47.850,0:03:51.310 This map over here shows[br]kind of the rough picture 0:03:51.310,0:03:53.040 of what the Warlord[br]Era looked like. 0:03:53.040,0:03:55.010 Each of these regions[br]were controlled 0:03:55.010,0:03:57.390 by a different warlord[br]who was in charge 0:03:57.390,0:03:59.850 of a different military. 0:03:59.850,0:04:02.440 When this was going on[br]during the Warlord Era, 0:04:02.440,0:04:05.680 especially as we go back[br]to the early '20s, in 1921 0:04:05.680,0:04:09.120 in particular, Sun[br]Yat-sen hasn't given up. 0:04:09.120,0:04:12.340 He goes to the[br]south in Guangzhou 0:04:12.340,0:04:16.510 and sets up, essentially,[br]a revolutionary government, 0:04:16.510,0:04:19.820 essentially a desire[br]from there to try 0:04:19.820,0:04:23.810 to consolidate power in[br]China again and reestablish 0:04:23.810,0:04:25.970 the Republic of China. 0:04:25.970,0:04:27.540 So he goes there. 0:04:27.540,0:04:32.440 But unfortunately he passes[br]away in 1925 from cancer. 0:04:32.440,0:04:38.790 And the hands or the power of[br]the movement that he started, 0:04:38.790,0:04:42.710 which is now being referred[br]to as the Kuomintang-- Let me 0:04:42.710,0:04:43.550 write that down. 0:04:43.550,0:04:53.790 0:04:53.790,0:04:56.150 Essentially, the[br]power there passes on 0:04:56.150,0:05:00.042 to Generalissimo[br]Chiang Kai-shek. 0:05:00.042,0:05:01.500 And Chiang Kai-shek,[br]the reason why 0:05:01.500,0:05:03.166 we say the power[br]essentially goes to him 0:05:03.166,0:05:05.530 is because he was in[br]control of the major part 0:05:05.530,0:05:09.540 of the military forces[br]of the Kuomintang. 0:05:09.540,0:05:13.040 And this is essentially the[br]very nascent early stages 0:05:13.040,0:05:15.050 of what would essentially[br]be the Chinese Civil 0:05:15.050,0:05:22.890 War because in the period from[br]1921 until Sun Yat-sen's death, 0:05:22.890,0:05:24.990 you actually had a[br]lot of collaboration 0:05:24.990,0:05:27.590 between the Chinese[br]nationalists, the Kuomintang, 0:05:27.590,0:05:31.540 and the Soviet Union, and[br]the Chinese Communist Party. 0:05:31.540,0:05:33.910 They were trying to[br]collaborate in order 0:05:33.910,0:05:36.810 to think about how[br]China would unify. 0:05:36.810,0:05:41.830 But then once Sun Yat-sen dies[br]and the power of the Kuomintang 0:05:41.830,0:05:44.890 essentially goes into the[br]hands of Generalissimo Chiang 0:05:44.890,0:05:48.080 Kai-shek, he starts[br]to consolidate power. 0:05:48.080,0:05:50.070 And right from the[br]get-go, he doesn't 0:05:50.070,0:05:51.810 antagonize the communists. 0:05:51.810,0:05:56.010 But by 1927, he's[br]starting to consolidate, 0:05:56.010,0:06:01.840 he's starting to merge[br]these various factions 0:06:01.840,0:06:02.970 in the rest of China. 0:06:02.970,0:06:04.900 So he's able to[br]consolidate power. 0:06:04.900,0:06:08.470 But he also starts to[br]go after the communists. 0:06:08.470,0:06:11.976 So Chiang Kai-shek,[br]by '27, also starts 0:06:11.976,0:06:13.100 to go after the communists. 0:06:13.100,0:06:14.683 And the communists[br]are saying, hey, we 0:06:14.683,0:06:18.110 are the ones that really[br]represent the spirit of what 0:06:18.110,0:06:21.375 Sun Yat-sen represented,[br]while the Kuomintang 0:06:21.375,0:06:23.750 under the leadership of Chiang[br]Kai-shek said, no, no, no. 0:06:23.750,0:06:28.060 We represent what Sun Yat-sen[br]represented when he first 0:06:28.060,0:06:31.330 established the[br]Republic of China. 0:06:31.330,0:06:36.531 And so in 1927, you have the[br]beginning of the Chinese Civil 0:06:36.531,0:06:37.030 War. 0:06:37.030,0:06:39.650 This is when the Kuomintang,[br]as part of its efforts 0:06:39.650,0:06:41.550 to consolidate[br]power, not only tries 0:06:41.550,0:06:43.350 to consolidate power[br]of the warlords, 0:06:43.350,0:06:46.670 but also goes after[br]the Communist Party. 0:06:46.670,0:06:48.990 Now while all of[br]this is happening, 0:06:48.990,0:06:53.210 as we get into the early[br]1930s, Japan once again 0:06:53.210,0:06:56.470 is trying to exert its[br]imperial, its military, 0:06:56.470,0:06:58.860 might on the Chinese mainland. 0:06:58.860,0:07:00.970 They had already[br]captured Formosa, 0:07:00.970,0:07:03.400 which is now known[br]as Taiwan, and Korea 0:07:03.400,0:07:07.340 during the first Sino-Japanese[br]War at the end of the 1800s. 0:07:07.340,0:07:16.250 And then in 1931, the Japanese[br]start to encroach on Manchuria. 0:07:16.250,0:07:19.860 And this would essentially[br]become a multi-year occupation 0:07:19.860,0:07:23.960 and infiltration of[br]Japan into China. 0:07:23.960,0:07:26.790 And this continues all[br]the way until 1937, 0:07:26.790,0:07:29.350 when it becomes an[br]official all-out war 0:07:29.350,0:07:32.870 between the Japanese[br]and the Chinese. 0:07:32.870,0:07:35.130 And I have a map[br]here that shows kind 0:07:35.130,0:07:40.050 of the maximum Japanese[br]control over this period. 0:07:40.050,0:07:43.250 And so in east Asia between[br]the Chinese and the Japanese, 0:07:43.250,0:07:49.440 World War II was really just[br]part of the Sino-Japanese War. 0:07:49.440,0:07:51.780 The Japanese had[br]already encroached 0:07:51.780,0:07:56.310 on the mainland of China[br]well before World War 0:07:56.310,0:07:58.790 II had officially begun. 0:07:58.790,0:08:01.020 Now while all this[br]is happening, Japan 0:08:01.020,0:08:04.640 is encroaching into Manchuria,[br]in 1934, you have to remember, 0:08:04.640,0:08:08.370 the Kuomintang, the Nationalist[br]Party under Chiang Kai-shek 0:08:08.370,0:08:11.160 is going after the communists. 0:08:11.160,0:08:16.560 And in 1934, he almost[br]has them, or he does. 0:08:16.560,0:08:20.510 The communists are[br]nearly defeated. 0:08:20.510,0:08:22.810 They're surrounded by[br]the Nationalist Party. 0:08:22.810,0:08:25.590 And this becomes what[br]is a fairly famous event 0:08:25.590,0:08:28.790 in Chinese history, the[br]famous Long March, where 0:08:28.790,0:08:31.410 the Chinese Communist[br]Party, their military, 0:08:31.410,0:08:34.820 is marched through[br]extremely tough terrain 0:08:34.820,0:08:38.330 all the way to the[br]northwest of China. 0:08:38.330,0:08:42.490 So this right over here is[br]a map of the Long March. 0:08:42.490,0:08:46.060 The Chinese Communist Party[br]seemed to be on the ropes 0:08:46.060,0:08:48.370 here in 1934. 0:08:48.370,0:08:50.580 And it was during[br]this Long March 0:08:50.580,0:08:55.670 that Mao Zedong really started[br]to exert and show leadership. 0:08:55.670,0:08:57.580 The leadership during[br]this Long March, 0:08:57.580,0:09:00.080 during this retreat to[br]the northwest of China, 0:09:00.080,0:09:02.950 is really what allowed Mao[br]Zedong to eventually take 0:09:02.950,0:09:06.180 control of the Chinese[br]Communist Party. 0:09:06.180,0:09:10.140 Now as we fast forward, we know[br]that the Sino-Japanese War-- 0:09:10.140,0:09:12.700 you could view this as one[br]theater, eventually, of World 0:09:12.700,0:09:16.360 War II-- eventually the[br]US goes in on the side 0:09:16.360,0:09:19.200 of the Allies against[br]Japan after Pearl Harbor. 0:09:19.200,0:09:25.210 And then in 1945,[br]you have the attacks 0:09:25.210,0:09:27.900 on Hiroshima and Nagasaki[br]with atomic weapons, 0:09:27.900,0:09:30.640 which essentially ends[br]the Pacific theater. 0:09:30.640,0:09:36.240 It's defeat for Japan, and[br]Japan has lost World War II. 0:09:36.240,0:09:38.530 And at this point,[br]full-scale civil war 0:09:38.530,0:09:40.720 between the two parties[br]break out again. 0:09:40.720,0:09:45.720 The Civil War started in 1927,[br]and then it kept continuing. 0:09:45.720,0:09:48.780 But then once there was a common[br]enemy in Japan that was clearly 0:09:48.780,0:09:53.140 aggressively trying to take[br]over more and more of China's 0:09:53.140,0:09:56.750 people, resources, exert[br]its imperial influence, 0:09:56.750,0:09:59.370 then you had the two parties[br]kind of go into a low-grade war 0:09:59.370,0:10:01.420 and say, hey, we need[br]to fight these Japanese. 0:10:01.420,0:10:04.880 But once World War[br]II ended in 1945, 0:10:04.880,0:10:06.670 once the Japanese were[br]defeated, then you 0:10:06.670,0:10:08.530 had full-scale[br]civil war break out 0:10:08.530,0:10:10.100 again between the[br]Chinese Communist 0:10:10.100,0:10:12.260 Party and the Kuomintang. 0:10:12.260,0:10:14.850 And this is probably one of the[br]biggest comebacks in history. 0:10:14.850,0:10:18.892 This was the Chinese Communist[br]Party that in 1934 and 1935 0:10:18.892,0:10:20.350 looked like they[br]were on the ropes. 0:10:20.350,0:10:23.964 They were forced into,[br]essentially, retreat. 0:10:23.964,0:10:25.130 They were able to come back. 0:10:25.130,0:10:28.480 And in 1949-- and[br]there's a lot of theories 0:10:28.480,0:10:31.086 as to why they were[br]able to pull this off. 0:10:31.086,0:10:33.800 That they were able to get[br]much more of the support 0:10:33.800,0:10:35.090 from the rural population. 0:10:35.090,0:10:37.460 They were more savvy about[br]getting support generally 0:10:37.460,0:10:38.360 than the Kuomintang. 0:10:38.360,0:10:41.070 But we could talk about[br]that in a future video. 0:10:41.070,0:10:44.290 But by 1949, they[br]were able to defeat 0:10:44.290,0:10:46.770 Chiang Kai-shek[br]and the Kuomintang, 0:10:46.770,0:10:53.770 force the Kuomintang[br]to retreat to Taiwan, 0:10:53.770,0:10:56.570 establish government in Taiwan. 0:10:56.570,0:10:58.760 And ever since then, you[br]had the establishment 0:10:58.760,0:11:02.440 by the Chinese[br]Communist Party in 1949 0:11:02.440,0:11:06.144 of the People's[br]Republic of China. 0:11:06.144,0:11:06.644
