Francis turbines are often used
for medium sized power plants.
For the production of electricity,
a shaft connects the electric generator
to a moving wheel.
The moving wheel is provided
with fixed blades.
The guiding wheel surrounds
the moving wheel.
The blades on the moving wheel
are steerable.
A simple rotation allows the power
of the turbine to be adjusted.
The water supply for the
Francis turbine
is generally enabled by a spiral cover
surrounding the impeller.
The water engulfs the penstock,
and moves toward the spiral sheet.
The turbined water then escapes
through the tailrace.
The rotation of the turbine
drives the rotor of the electric generator
which produces electricity.
