0:00:00.000,0:00:04.500 <Introduction to Buddhism I> 0:00:04.500,0:00:10.171 <What Is the Meaning of “Emptiness”?> 0:00:10.171,0:00:13.189 (Questioner) Hi, Sunim, [br]Hi, everyone. 0:00:13.189,0:00:17.369 Raising a question in such a large[br]group makes me a little nervous. 0:00:17.369,0:00:20.326 So, please bear with me. 0:00:20.326,0:00:24.839 The question that I have relates [br]to the concept of emptiness. 0:00:24.839,0:00:27.329 Emptiness has come up [br]in a few of your Dharma talks, 0:00:27.329,0:00:30.217 your videos, and textbooks a few times. 0:00:30.217,0:00:33.969 It also comes up in many [br]of the traditional texts and sutras 0:00:33.969,0:00:36.829 like Diamond Sutra and Heart Sutra. 0:00:36.829,0:00:40.707 Whenever I read through what emptiness [br]means in the Buddhist concept, 0:00:40.707,0:00:44.707 it leaves me a bit more confused 0:00:44.707,0:00:49.572 and sometimes a little bit dampened [br]and slightly demotivated. 0:00:49.572,0:00:55.652 The reason is because the way [br]I understand it is very shallow. 0:00:55.652,0:01:01.782 The way I understand it is that because of[br]the impermanence and the causality 0:01:01.782,0:01:07.229 being dependent on each other,[br]things become empty, or things are empty. 0:01:07.229,0:01:12.178 But my challenge and difficulty [br]with understanding the concept is 0:01:12.178,0:01:17.592 how do I approach it so that I'm not [br]undermining what is important in life, 0:01:17.592,0:01:29.806 for instance, family relationships [br]that matter, or ambitions that matter. 0:01:29.806,0:01:37.465 That's my question. 0:01:37.465,0:01:55.065 (Sunim) We usually express emptiness[br]using the Chinese character 0:01:55.065,0:02:00.128 meaning not filled, empty. 0:02:00.128,0:02:22.258 But how a word is interpreted[br]really depends on the context 0:02:22.258,0:02:24.828 of what came before,[br]and what follows after. 0:02:24.828,0:02:29.411 So, the same word can mean [br]multiple things. 0:02:29.411,0:02:55.193 For example, if you claim that [br]this word can only mean one thing, 0:02:55.193,0:03:00.733 it can be called "form."[br]But if it means multiple things 0:03:00.733,0:03:05.198 depending on the context,[br]we can call it "empty." 0:03:05.198,0:03:07.481 That's what emptiness means. 0:03:07.481,0:03:23.372 Emptiness in this context [br]does not mean a complete absence 0:03:23.372,0:03:25.857 of something or a complete void. 0:03:25.857,0:03:30.812 It really means that everything is[br]contextual and depends on the context 0:03:30.812,0:03:37.430 in which the words are used [br]or the definition the word falls under. 0:03:37.430,0:03:52.876 Let's take an example:[br]Somebody may look at you 0:03:52.876,0:03:56.657 and claim that you are a good person. 0:03:56.657,0:04:00.836 Another person may look at you [br]and say you are a bad person. 0:04:00.836,0:04:11.924 When somebody claims [br]that you're a good person 0:04:11.924,0:04:17.012 that means that you have[br]an essence of goodness in you. 0:04:17.012,0:04:28.082 If somebody says you're a bad person,[br]you have something within you that 0:04:28.082,0:04:31.297 that person perceives as bad. 0:04:31.297,0:04:49.809 So, whether it is a positive element[br]or a negative one, the very assertion that 0:04:49.809,0:04:56.019 such an element exists is what is referred[br]to as "form," in contrast to "emptiness." 0:04:56.019,0:05:16.316 What emptiness refers to is that [br]it's all about that person's perception 0:05:16.316,0:05:21.836 as being good, or that person's [br]perception as being bad, 0:05:21.836,0:05:28.211 but that there's nothing intrinsic [br]within you that's good or bad. 0:05:28.211,0:05:58.135 In other words, you don't have [br]an essential form, element, or attribute 0:05:58.135,0:06:03.385 within you that somebody can point to[br]and say that's good or bad. 0:06:03.385,0:06:09.745 It is just their perception of you, within[br]that specific context of space and time, 0:06:09.745,0:06:13.698 in which they claim you are good or bad. 0:06:13.698,0:06:27.786 So, when somebody says you are[br]a bad person or you're a good person, 0:06:27.786,0:06:31.428 I can say,[br]"You are neither good nor bad. 0:06:31.428,0:06:35.070 You just are. You are emptiness,[br]devoid of a fixed self." 0:06:35.070,0:06:49.234 In that case, empty doesn't mean[br]that you don't exist, 0:06:49.234,0:06:52.924 that there's nothing,[br]or that there's just a void. 0:06:52.924,0:07:00.864 It just means that there's no attribute[br]or an essense within you intrinsically 0:07:00.864,0:07:05.547 that we can call as good or bad. 0:07:05.547,0:07:09.837 Let's say we have this thing. 0:07:09.837,0:07:27.233 Somebody took a little bite [br]of this thing and got healed. 0:07:27.233,0:07:31.580 So, that person said, [br]"This is a great medicine." 0:07:31.580,0:07:41.175 But somebody else took a bite[br]of the same thing and got sick. 0:07:41.175,0:07:48.413 That person pointed the same thing[br]and said that's poison. 0:07:48.413,0:07:57.142 So, is this thing medicine or poison? 0:07:57.142,0:08:00.652 There are three things in this world. 0:08:00.652,0:08:03.902 One is medicine. 0:08:03.902,0:08:06.882 Second is poison. 0:08:06.882,0:08:16.794 And the third is that it has both [br]medicinal and poisonous properties 0:08:16.794,0:08:26.227 But this thing itself is empty. 0:08:26.227,0:08:36.686 That means that it neither has [br]toxic properties nor medicinal properties. 0:08:36.686,0:08:43.807 That means that this is just a thing. 0:08:43.807,0:08:56.212 In whatever context and situation[br]this thing has been applied to, 0:08:56.212,0:09:03.130 it sometimes has medicinal attributes [br]or sometimes has toxic attributes. 0:09:03.130,0:09:17.173 That's when you use the word [br]emptiness or Gong (空) to refer to that 0:09:17.173,0:09:24.578 this is neither medicinal nor toxic, [br]you are neither good nor bad person. 0:09:24.578,0:09:45.528 All existence, whether that's[br]biological or non-biological, 0:09:45.528,0:09:50.046 or even a thought,[br]a mental phenomena, 0:09:50.046,0:09:54.217 is empty (of a fixed nature).[br]It's neither good nor bad. 0:09:54.217,0:10:08.585 That's why "the truth is emptiness." [br]In other words, it simply is what it is. 0:10:08.585,0:10:40.625 How it's represented or manifests[br]really depends on the situation, 0:10:40.625,0:10:45.165 the context, and the connections [br]in which it is allowed to manifest. 0:10:45.165,0:10:47.777 So, in some situations, [br]you are a good person 0:10:47.777,0:10:50.390 and in other situations,[br]you're a bad person. 0:10:50.390,0:11:02.968 In some situations this thing is a [br]medicine in other it is a poison. 0:11:02.968,0:11:14.681 So when we say Gong (공) the empty, 0:11:14.681,0:11:19.268 that is kind of what a thing is [br]what a phenomenon is. 0:11:19.268,0:11:24.533 But however it's represented [br]within the context or situation 0:11:24.533,0:11:29.398 it finds itself in and that [br]is what we call Form. 0:11:29.398,0:11:40.483 Therefore if you really truly understand [br]that all essence of all existence 0:11:40.483,0:11:44.088 is really empty then there's [br]no cause for you to suffer. 0:11:44.088,0:11:52.258 Because you realize the person [br]is neither bad nor good. 0:11:52.258,0:12:05.514 That doesn't mean [br]that person does not exist. 0:12:05.514,0:12:10.804 That just means that the person in this [br]situation in this space and time context 0:12:10.804,0:12:21.077 under this specific set of conditions [br]may appear to be good or bad to me. 0:12:21.077,0:12:29.523 Doesn't look like [br]you are fully clear on that. 0:12:29.523,0:12:35.623 (Questioner) I am thinking of how you mention [br]good or bad sometimes is empty. 0:12:35.623,0:12:40.048 At the same time I can't help [br]to think of historical dictators 0:12:40.048,0:12:43.320 that have caused a lot of hurt. 0:12:43.320,0:12:47.264 But also at the same time [br]I have in my head explained to myself 0:12:47.264,0:12:50.700 that they have violated [br]the precepts. That's all. 0:12:59.478,0:13:11.628 So even the precepts themselves are empty. 0:13:23.148,0:13:29.760 I guess I am still a little confused [br]about the precepts being empty. 0:13:29.760,0:13:31.293 Do you mean they are dependent 0:13:31.293,0:13:47.733 on the historical age we're in [br]the society that we're in? 0:13:47.733,0:14:06.132 (Sunim) There's no ethical precepts that we can [br]absolutely say that this is the truth. 0:14:06.132,0:14:10.662 That this is the way regardless [br]of the situation and time and space 0:14:10.662,0:14:17.432 that we find ourselves in, because [br]that actually is a very dangerous path. 0:14:17.432,0:14:53.212 So what Buddha taught us [br]that the proper way the right way 0:14:53.212,0:14:59.156 is always determined by the space and [br]time of the situation that we are under. 0:14:59.156,0:15:02.513 It's basically setting a compass down [br]in a new place and seeing 0:15:02.513,0:15:06.226 where it points north and[br]that's when you find the right way. 0:15:06.226,0:15:07.731 So everything is dependent 0:15:07.731,0:15:12.186 even though the proper path on that, [br]that's the middle way. 0:15:12.186,0:15:17.956 And the concept of that middle way as it[br]transition over to Mahayana Buddhism, 0:15:17.956,0:15:22.363 it became translated [br]or understood as emptiness. 0:15:22.363,0:15:42.983 So the emptiness, the concept [br]and the words, actually was a criticism 0:15:42.983,0:15:46.883 against Theravada kind [br]of rigid traditionalism 0:15:46.883,0:15:54.633 in which they claimed that a certain [br]set of ethical constructions was the way. 0:15:54.633,0:16:05.492 And the criticism in Mahayana against that[br]was that the construct should be empty. 0:16:05.492,0:16:36.072 So basically the original criticism [br]which Theravada's rigid absoluteness 0:16:36.072,0:16:42.982 of the way was that there is no fixed way [br]and that eventually got translated 0:16:42.982,0:16:49.830 and kind of consolidated [br]into the word emptiness. 0:16:49.830,0:17:03.475 Basically when someone [br]claims that this the truth, 0:17:03.475,0:17:08.140 then the criticism is that there's [br]nothing that you can point to and say 0:17:08.140,0:17:19.934 that's the absolute truth, and that got[br]translated into that sense of emptiness. 0:17:19.934,0:17:35.114 So the fact that we misunderstand [br]emptiness or the concept 0:17:35.114,0:17:55.091 because of the word that we use [br]in space, but it's only a part of all. 0:17:55.091,0:18:10.547 We usually obsess over somebody else, [br]if we like that person. 0:18:10.547,0:18:19.176 And we want to make that person behave [br]the way we want them to behave. 0:18:19.176,0:18:25.595 So if they don't behave [br]accordingly then we feel bitter. 0:18:25.595,0:18:36.585 And if that disappointment becomes [br]too much then we just let go, 0:18:36.585,0:18:42.840 and we become indifferent to them. 0:18:42.840,0:18:54.780 If we realize this concept of emptiness 0:18:54.780,0:19:00.586 then we can actually [br]let go of our obsession. 0:19:00.586,0:19:08.155 Then we can allow him or her [br]to behave as they want. 0:19:08.155,0:19:12.155 If they ask for our help, [br]then we help. 0:19:12.155,0:19:17.405 If they don't ask for help, [br]then we don't help. 0:19:17.405,0:19:29.395 So we're neither indifferent [br]in this case nor obsessive.
