0:00:00.066,0:00:03.190 Hello! Welcome to[br]part three of our helping process series. 0:00:03.190,0:00:04.324 This is the final part. 0:00:04.324,0:00:07.098 So if you're jumping in now[br]and haven't watched videos one and two, 0:00:07.098,0:00:09.529 in video one, we talk about[br]engagement and assessment, 0:00:09.529,0:00:11.964 in video two, we talk about[br]planning and intervention, 0:00:11.964,0:00:14.914 and now we have finally made it to[br]evaluation and termination. 0:00:14.914,0:00:16.383 So probably watch these videos in order. 0:00:16.383,0:00:18.985 But if not, if you're just jumping in now[br]that's totally okay. 0:00:18.985,0:00:21.755 Hi, I'm Anna, I'm a social worker[br]and I make YouTube videos, 0:00:21.755,0:00:24.591 both educational ones like this,[br]and then also just lifestyle videos 0:00:24.591,0:00:26.722 giving a look into the life[br]of a social worker. 0:00:26.722,0:00:28.456 The helping process[br]gives a general framework 0:00:28.456,0:00:30.463 of a social worker-client interaction. 0:00:30.463,0:00:32.265 Not too much more introduction needed. 0:00:32.265,0:00:34.334 So we all start with evaluation. 0:00:34.334,0:00:37.070 This is a step[br]that will look so super different 0:00:37.070,0:00:40.264 depending on if you are a micro[br]or meso or macro social worker, 0:00:40.264,0:00:44.310 but this step happens after engagement,[br]after assessment, after planning 0:00:44.310,0:00:47.480 and sometimes after intervention,[br]but also kind of during intervention. 0:00:47.480,0:00:49.640 Evaluation[br]is measuring the client's progress 0:00:49.640,0:00:53.019 and determining if there is progress[br]being made toward the established goals. 0:00:53.019,0:00:55.457 If you determine, yes,[br]there has been progress being made, 0:00:55.457,0:00:57.757 what is the progress that's being made?[br]How do you know? 0:00:57.757,0:01:00.193 Are there areas of intervention[br]that need to change? 0:01:00.193,0:01:02.395 Maybe progress[br]isn't getting made in certain areas, 0:01:02.395,0:01:05.098 and so something needs to go different[br]so that you can actually get an outcome. 0:01:05.098,0:01:06.784 Do any goals need to change 0:01:06.784,0:01:09.069 in order to better[br]match the presenting problem? 0:01:09.069,0:01:12.653 Is the modality of intervention that was[br]chosen for this client still working? 0:01:12.653,0:01:13.621 Is it still a good fit? 0:01:13.621,0:01:15.913 And if the intervention[br]is working for the client, 0:01:15.913,0:01:16.887 how do you know? 0:01:16.887,0:01:19.612 Both in their own words[br]and then also in your observations? 0:01:19.612,0:01:24.317 Evaluation is so super important because[br]it ensures that treatment is effective. 0:01:24.317,0:01:26.552 It's not just playing around[br]with the client and seeing, 0:01:26.552,0:01:28.521 "Okay, maybe this will help,[br]maybe this won't. 0:01:28.521,0:01:30.790 Even if this isn't helping,[br]it's kind of fun for me, 0:01:30.790,0:01:32.125 so I'm gonna keep doing it." 0:01:32.125,0:01:34.927 Evaluation is ensuring that[br]what the client wants to work on, 0:01:34.927,0:01:37.997 what the client wants to be done,[br]is progressing, is happening. 0:01:37.997,0:01:39.483 So some tips to do it well 0:01:39.483,0:01:42.068 is to have a flexible mindset[br]through intervention. 0:01:42.068,0:01:45.710 Even though a program worked[br]really well for one specific high school, 0:01:45.710,0:01:47.411 it does not necessarily mean 0:01:47.411,0:01:50.111 the same results will be shown[br]in the high school you are working in, 0:01:50.111,0:01:52.348 and you could be[br]really excited about the program 0:01:52.348,0:01:54.614 and think it would be really fun[br]and really want to see it through. 0:01:54.614,0:01:57.183 But if the results aren't there,[br]the results aren't there. 0:01:57.183,0:02:00.386 What are some confounding factors[br]that may be affecting the process? 0:02:00.386,0:02:02.755 What are the differences[br]between the high school you're working in 0:02:02.755,0:02:04.991 and the one that the program[br]worked really well in? 0:02:04.991,0:02:06.659 And can the program be altered to 0:02:06.659,0:02:08.595 maybe better fit the high school[br]that you're working in? 0:02:08.595,0:02:12.517 If something is not working after[br]a standard amount of time, adjust it. 0:02:12.517,0:02:14.606 This doesn't mean,[br]"Okay after two sessions, 0:02:14.606,0:02:17.326 if a client's presenting problem[br]isn't better, it needs to be changed." 0:02:17.326,0:02:19.072 That's why I say[br]the standard amount of time. 0:02:19.072,0:02:22.652 A reasonable amount of time[br]to expect progress or expect change, 0:02:22.652,0:02:24.577 but progress isn't happening,[br]adjust. 0:02:24.577,0:02:26.446 This will look different[br]depending on where you're at, 0:02:26.446,0:02:28.381 but collect data continuously. 0:02:28.381,0:02:30.116 This can be formal or informal. 0:02:30.116,0:02:32.262 For example, some modalities of therapy 0:02:32.262,0:02:35.522 have a client rate and monitor symptoms[br]throughout each week. 0:02:35.522,0:02:38.358 Or maybe just rate and do a mood check[br]at the beginning of a session. 0:02:38.358,0:02:40.766 If that's what you're doing,[br]then you can see over time, 0:02:40.766,0:02:41.761 "Okay, what's changing? 0:02:41.761,0:02:44.196 How many times are panic attacks[br]occurring during the week 0:02:44.196,0:02:45.165 or whatever you're working on? 0:02:45.165,0:02:47.389 Maybe it's a survey[br]given to community members. 0:02:47.389,0:02:49.469 Maybe it's[br]collecting collateral information 0:02:49.469,0:02:52.505 from parents and teachers about behavior[br]that you're working on with a child. 0:02:52.505,0:02:54.841 Are there observable differences[br]in the classroom 0:02:54.841,0:02:56.343 since I began work with this child? 0:02:56.343,0:03:00.122 Pulling from our handy-dandy[br]code of ethics, 5.02, 0:03:00.122,0:03:02.378 "Social workers[br]should monitor and evaluate policies, 0:03:02.378,0:03:04.926 the implementation of programs,[br]and practice interventions. 0:03:04.926,0:03:07.879 Social workers should promote[br]and facilitate evaluation and research 0:03:07.879,0:03:09.556 to contribute to[br]the development of knowledge. 0:03:09.556,0:03:11.220 Social workers should critically examine 0:03:11.220,0:03:13.821 and keep current with emerging knowledge[br]relevant to social work 0:03:13.821,0:03:16.171 and fully use evaluation[br]and research evidence 0:03:16.171,0:03:17.397 in their professional practice." 0:03:17.397,0:03:20.646 So, in the code of ethics, it says you[br]need to be doing some sort of evaluation. 0:03:20.646,0:03:23.156 Now for everyone, that's not going to mean[br]working in a research lab 0:03:23.156,0:03:24.537 conducting research studies. 0:03:24.537,0:03:28.137 But even if it is just your personal,[br]one to one therapy client. 0:03:28.137,0:03:29.300 Evaluating intervention. 0:03:29.300,0:03:31.210 I also think this is[br]an important time to point out 0:03:31.210,0:03:34.948 that some social workers specialize[br]in one part of this helping process. 0:03:34.948,0:03:36.883 Maybe I should've mentioned this[br]in the previous videos. 0:03:36.883,0:03:39.105 Some social workers,[br]their job is assessment, 0:03:39.105,0:03:42.168 and then the client[br]moves on deeper into the agency 0:03:42.168,0:03:43.634 to actually get the intervention. 0:03:43.634,0:03:45.917 Or some social workers,[br]and this is why I bring it up now, 0:03:45.917,0:03:47.293 specialize in evaluation. 0:03:47.293,0:03:50.163 You can work in program evaluation[br]as a social worker. 0:03:50.163,0:03:53.833 Sometimes this could be in-house[br]at a certain community agency. 0:03:53.833,0:03:55.493 Or sometimes there's even consultants 0:03:55.493,0:03:58.338 who will come in[br]whenever a company asks them to 0:03:58.338,0:04:00.548 and evaluate programs[br]that they have going on 0:04:00.548,0:04:02.308 related to some social issue. 0:04:02.308,0:04:04.944 So social workers can, like,[br]specialize in the evaluation. 0:04:04.944,0:04:07.079 Or social workers can be researchers. 0:04:07.079,0:04:09.733 This is common, especially if you see[br]social workers with PhDs. 0:04:09.733,0:04:11.742 PhDs have research components in them. 0:04:11.742,0:04:13.407 Research in social work can cover 0:04:13.407,0:04:17.657 so many broad, various topics[br]and subjects and points of the process. 0:04:17.657,0:04:19.959 Sometimes[br]it might be defining a social problem, 0:04:19.959,0:04:22.462 sometimes it might be[br]evaluating an existing program. 0:04:22.462,0:04:24.864 Sometimes it might be evaluating[br]an existing policy. 0:04:24.864,0:04:27.767 Sometimes it might be testing for[br]the effectiveness of an intervention. 0:04:27.767,0:04:30.103 Research and evaluation[br]is a huge part of social work 0:04:30.103,0:04:33.539 that sometimes isn't talked about as much,[br]because it's not always client facing. 0:04:33.539,0:04:35.675 It can be,[br]but it's not always client facing. 0:04:35.675,0:04:38.817 Pulling back from our handy-dandy[br]code of ethics, still 5.02, 0:04:38.817,0:04:41.300 "Social workers engaged in[br]evaluation or research 0:04:41.300,0:04:43.671 should carefully consider[br]possible consequences 0:04:43.671,0:04:44.987 and should follow guidelines 0:04:44.987,0:04:47.954 developed for the protection[br]of evaluation and research participants. 0:04:47.954,0:04:50.100 Social workers should[br]inform participants of their right to 0:04:50.100,0:04:53.026 withdraw from evaluation and research[br]at any time without penalty. 0:04:53.026,0:04:54.560 Social workers should[br]take appropriate steps 0:04:54.560,0:04:56.955 to ensure that participants[br]in evaluation and research 0:04:56.955,0:04:59.165 have access to[br]appropriate supportive services. 0:04:59.165,0:05:02.371 Social workers engaged in evaluation[br]or research should protect participants 0:05:02.371,0:05:05.905 from unwarranted physical and mental[br]distress, harm, danger or deprivation. 0:05:05.905,0:05:09.142 Social workers should report evaluation[br]and research findings accurately." 0:05:09.142,0:05:10.783 So that section is specific to 0:05:10.783,0:05:13.454 the people who specifically work in[br]research and evaluation, 0:05:13.454,0:05:15.381 because there is ethics[br]involved in that, too. 0:05:15.381,0:05:17.283 Because there are research[br]participants involved. 0:05:17.283,0:05:21.454 Even if it's not necessarily client facing[br]in the same way that micro one to one is, 0:05:21.454,0:05:23.772 or even that macro is,[br]working with communities, 0:05:23.772,0:05:25.929 it is still so important to be ethical 0:05:25.929,0:05:28.628 as a social worker[br]in evaluation and in research. 0:05:28.628,0:05:31.597 But anytime you hear about,[br]"Oh, use evidence-based practices." 0:05:31.597,0:05:34.500 The evidence comes from social workers[br]working in research. 0:05:34.500,0:05:36.602 It's like they're laying the foundation[br]for the field. 0:05:36.602,0:05:38.951 An evaluation of your intervention[br]or your practice 0:05:38.951,0:05:41.437 might be something[br]that's regulated at the agency work in. 0:05:41.437,0:05:43.848 For example, it could be like[br]every three months or so, 0:05:43.848,0:05:45.305 you check in on treatment plans, 0:05:45.305,0:05:48.348 see what the progress is,[br]see if anything needs to be adjusted. 0:05:48.348,0:05:52.352 But and this is the big one,[br]what happens whenever services are done? 0:05:52.352,0:05:55.254 I feel like[br]termination is such a big word. 0:05:55.254,0:05:58.424 It does remind of like the Terminator,[br]I'm going to terminate a client, 0:05:58.424,0:05:59.792 but it just means ending services. 0:05:59.792,0:06:02.957 Termination is the step of[br]the helping process that– 0:06:02.957,0:06:05.189 I mean, all of them need to be[br]treated with so much care, 0:06:05.189,0:06:08.901 but termination especially[br]needs to be treated with so much care. 0:06:08.901,0:06:13.473 Termination starts to occur throughout[br]the entire therapeutic relationship. 0:06:13.473,0:06:14.907 And what I mean by that is that 0:06:14.907,0:06:17.159 through the entire time[br]you're interacting with the client, 0:06:17.159,0:06:19.212 you're preparing them[br]to not need you anymore. 0:06:19.212,0:06:20.907 Termination is not just one session, 0:06:20.907,0:06:23.950 and failure to terminate well[br]could be abandonment of a client. 0:06:23.950,0:06:27.294 There is a podcast episode[br]from the podcast Very Bad Therapy. 0:06:27.294,0:06:28.743 Where they go into termination 0:06:28.743,0:06:30.857 and I think it could be interesting[br]for you to listen to 0:06:30.857,0:06:34.730 because it goes deeper into specific[br]perspectives and theoretical backgrounds 0:06:34.730,0:06:36.696 that I'm not necessarily[br]going to touch on today, 0:06:36.696,0:06:38.464 so I'll link it[br]down in the description below. 0:06:38.464,0:06:41.054 The podcast hosts have backgrounds[br]in marriage and family therapy, 0:06:41.054,0:06:43.330 but they do bring in[br]the ASWB code of ethics, 0:06:43.330,0:06:47.209 and they discuss in individual[br]therapy settings more about termination. 0:06:47.209,0:06:48.508 So that could be interesting for you. 0:06:48.508,0:06:50.831 But for our purposes today,[br]just thinking about termination 0:06:50.831,0:06:53.846 when treatment is no longer[br]serving the client's needs 0:06:53.846,0:06:56.883 or is no longer necessary for the client,[br]services should be ended. 0:06:56.883,0:06:58.897 If the presenting problem[br]has been addressed 0:06:58.897,0:07:02.091 and treatment goals have been met[br]with no new presenting problems coming up, 0:07:02.091,0:07:03.360 treatment should be ended. 0:07:03.360,0:07:05.324 Now, if a new presenting problem arises, 0:07:05.324,0:07:07.452 then a new helping process[br]can kind of begin 0:07:07.452,0:07:09.260 where you assess and figure out and plan. 0:07:09.260,0:07:10.163 As social workers, 0:07:10.163,0:07:13.150 honestly our goal is for our clients[br]to no longer need our services 0:07:13.150,0:07:15.701 because we are promoting empowerment,[br]we're promoting independence. 0:07:15.701,0:07:18.349 In a perfect world,[br]the end of a therapeutic relationship 0:07:18.349,0:07:20.206 would never[br]come as a surprise to a client. 0:07:20.206,0:07:21.874 But obviously we don't live[br]in a perfect world. 0:07:21.874,0:07:25.978 So instead, it is important to always be[br]ethical whenever services are ending. 0:07:25.978,0:07:28.014 And we have a responsibility[br]to do our due diligence 0:07:28.014,0:07:29.715 to treat termination with so much care. 0:07:29.715,0:07:32.285 That's coming from[br]whenever a social worker ends services. 0:07:32.285,0:07:35.192 A client is free to terminate services[br]at any time that they would like. 0:07:35.192,0:07:39.322 Termination can hold many different[br]emotions for both client and social worker, 0:07:39.322,0:07:41.015 and our job is to support clients 0:07:41.015,0:07:43.203 however they're experiencing it[br]and however they need it. 0:07:43.203,0:07:45.468 Some people may feel[br]joy and pride because, 0:07:45.468,0:07:47.533 "Woohoo![br]I finished my treatment goals, 0:07:47.533,0:07:50.269 I have all these new skills,[br]I'm ready to take on the world." 0:07:50.269,0:07:52.886 Other people may feel[br]more fear and anxiety because, 0:07:52.886,0:07:55.981 "Uh-oh, I have to rely on my own self[br]and my own support 0:07:55.981,0:07:57.376 to keep up the progress I've made." 0:07:57.376,0:07:58.685 So some tips to do it well, 0:07:58.685,0:08:00.560 these are coming[br]straight from the code of ethics 0:08:00.560,0:08:03.542 because it gives very pointed guidelines[br]on how to terminate well. 0:08:03.542,0:08:12.391 "Social workers should terminate services To clients and professional. Relationships with them when such services[br]and relationships are no longer required or no longer serve[br]the client's needs or interests. 0:08:12.391,0:08:17.430 Social workers should take[br]reasonable steps to avoid abandoning. Clients.[br]Who are still in need of services." 0:08:17.430,0:08:20.600 Abandoning means no preparation,[br]no referrals outwards 0:08:20.600,0:08:22.301 so that they can continue service[br]if they need it. 0:08:22.301,0:08:32.645 "Social workers should withdraw services precipitously only under unusual circumstances,[br]giving careful consideration to all factors in the situation and taking care to minimize possible adverse effects." 0:08:32.645,0:08:34.780 I think you can tell from that language[br]there is a lot of. 0:08:34.780,0:08:37.016 Responsibility on a social worker[br]to terminate. 0:08:37.016,0:08:39.218 Well, and this. Means not leaving[br]client hanging if. 0:08:39.218,0:08:41.220 They are mid intervention. 0:08:41.220,0:08:43.489 You have not finished up[br]treatment goals have not been met. 0:08:43.489,0:08:45.091 There's a big. Responsibility. On you. 0:08:45.091,0:08:47.393 If services are going to have to end[br]from your end from 0:08:47.393,0:08:49.929 for some sort of reason,[br]for you to connect them with services, 0:08:49.929,0:08:53.266 for you to end the relationship[br]while taking care to minimize. 0:08:53.266,0:08:54.467 Possible adverse effects. 0:08:54.467,0:08:56.936 Social workers should assist[br]in making appropriate arrangements 0:08:56.936,0:08:59.038 for continuation of services[br]when necessary. 0:08:59.038,0:09:01.140 That's kind of how[br]I was mentioning the referrals outward. 0:09:01.140,0:09:01.574 I can no. 0:09:01.574,0:09:05.177 Longer provide you services,[br]but here are people who realistically can. 0:09:05.177,0:09:07.747 Social workers who anticipate[br]the termination or interruption of. 0:09:07.747,0:09:10.149 Services to clients[br]should notify clients promptly. 0:09:10.149,0:09:13.219 And seek the transfer, referral[br]or continuation of services in relation. 0:09:13.219,0:09:15.121 To the client's needs and preferences.[br]I was trying to. 0:09:15.121,0:09:16.689 Keep these videos mostly educational. 0:09:16.689,0:09:17.123 Because that's. 0:09:17.123,0:09:19.325 What they are, but I think sometimes[br]examples are helpful. 0:09:19.325,0:09:19.592 So for. 0:09:19.592,0:09:22.862 Example, I just recently left a position[br]I had seven clients 0:09:22.862,0:09:25.831 that I was seeing at the time, and I.[br]Gave three weeks notice to my employer. 0:09:25.831,0:09:28.000 So I had three.
