WEBVTT 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So I'm starting us out today with a historical mystery. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In 1957 there were two young women, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 both in their 20's, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 both living in the same city, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 both members of the same political group. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That year both decided to commit violent attacks. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 One girl took a gun and approached a soldier at checkpoint. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The other girl took a bomb and went to a crowded café. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But here's the thing. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 One of the those girls followed through with the attack, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but the other turned back. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So what made the difference? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I'm a behavioral historian 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and I study aggression, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 moral cognition 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and decision-making in social movements. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That's a mouthful. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Laughs) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So the translation of that 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is I study the moment an individual decided to pull the trigger, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the day-to-day decisions that led up to that moment 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the stories that they tell themselves about why that behavior is justified. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now this topic -- 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it's not just scholarly for me. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's actually a bit personal. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I grew up in Kootenai County, Idaho, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and this is very important. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is not the part of Idaho with potatoes. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We have no potatoes. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And if you ask my about potatoes, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I will find you. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This part of Idaho is known for mountain lakes, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 horseback riding, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 skiing. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Unfortunately, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 starting in the 1980s, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it also became known as the worldwide headquarters 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for the Aryan nations. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Every year, members of the local neo-Nazi compound 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 would turn out and march through our town, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and every year, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 members from our town would turn out and protest them. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now, in 2001, I graduated from high school 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and I went to college in New York City. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I arrived in August 2001. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 As many of you probably are aware, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 three weeks later, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the Twin Towers went down. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now, I was shocked. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I was incredibly angry. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I wanted to do something 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but the only thing that I could think of doing at that time 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 was to study Arabic. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I will admit I was that girl in class 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that wanted to know why they hate us. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I started studying Arabic for very wrong reasons. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But something unexpected happened. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I got a scholarship to go study in Israel. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So the Idaho girl went to the Middle East. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And while I was there I met Palestinian Muslims, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Palestinian Christians, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Israeli settlers, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Israeli peace activists, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and what I learned is that every act has an ecology. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It has a context. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now since then I have gone around the world, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I have studied violent movements, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I have worked with NGOs 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and ex-combatants in Iraq, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Syria, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Vietnam, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the Balkans, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Cuba. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I earned my PhD in History 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and now what I do is I go to difference archives 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and I dig through documents 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 looking for police confessions, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 court cases, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 diaries, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 manifestos of individuals involved in violent attacks. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now you gather all these documents -- 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 what do they tell you? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Our brains love causal mysteries, it turns out. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Any time we see an attack on the news, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we tend to ask one question: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 why? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Why did that happen? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Well, I can tell you I've read thousands of manifestos 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and what you find out is that they are actually imitative; 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they imitate the political movement that they're drawing from. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So they actually don't tell us a lot about decision-making 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in that particular case. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So we have to teach ourselves to ask a totally different question. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Instead of "Why?" we have to ask "How?" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 How did individuals produce these attacks 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and how did their decision-making ecology contribute to violent behavior? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There's a couple things I've learned from asking this kind of question. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The most important thing is that political is not culturally endemic. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We create it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And whether we realize it or not, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 our day-today habits contribute to the creation of violence 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in our environment. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So here's a couple of habits that I've learned contribute to violence. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 One of the first things that attackers did 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 when preparing themselves for a violent event 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 was they enclosed themselves in an information bubble. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We've heard of fake news, yeah? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Well, this shocked me. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Every group that I studied had some kind of a fake news slogan. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 French communists called it the "Putrid Press." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The Nationalists called it the "Sellout Press" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the "Treasonous Press." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Islamists in Egypt called it the "Depraved News." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And Egyptian Communists called it "Fake News." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So why do groups spend all this time trying to make these information bubbles? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The answer is actually really simple. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We make decisions based on the information we trust, yeah? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So if we trust bad information, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we're going to make bad decisions. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Another interesting habit that individuals used 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 when they wanted to produce a violent attack 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 was that they looked at their victim not as an individual 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but just as a number of an opposing team. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now this gets really weird. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There's some fun brain science behind why that kind of brain science is effective. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Say I divide all of you guys into two teams: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 blue team, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 red team. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And then I ask you to compete in a game against each other. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Well, the funny thing is within milliseconds, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you will actually start experiencing pleasure. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Pleasure when something bad happens to members of the other team. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The funny thing about that is if I ask one of you blue team members 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to go an join the red team, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 your brain recalibates, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and within milliseconds, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you will now start experiencing pleasure 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 when bad things happen to members of your old team. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is a really good example of why us/them thinking is so dangerous 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in our political environment. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Another habit that attackers use to kind of rev themselves up for an attack 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 was they focused on differences. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In other words, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they looked at their victimes 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and they thought "I share nothing in common with that person; 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they're totally different than me." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Again, this might sound like a really simple concept, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but there's just some fascinating science behind why this works. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Say I show you guys videos of different colored hands 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and sharp pins being driven into these colored hands, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 OK? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If you're white, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the chances are you will experience the most sympathetic activation 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 or the most pain 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 when you see a pin going into the white hand. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If you are Latin American, Arab, Black, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you will probably experience the most sympathetic activation 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 watching a pin going into the hand that looks most like yours. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The good news is that's not biologically fixed. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That is learned behavior. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Which means the more we spend time with other ethnic communities, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the more we see them as similar to us 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and part of our team, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the more we feel their pain. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The last habit that I'm going to talk about 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is when attackers prepare themselves to go out and do one of these events, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they focused on certain emotional cues. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 For months they geared themselves up by focusing on anger cues, for instance. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I bring this up because it's really popular right now. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If you read blogs or the news, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you see talk of two concepts from laboratory science: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 amygdala hijacking and emotional hijacking. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now, amygdala hijacking. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's the concept that I show you a cue -- 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 say, a gun -- 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and your brain reacts with an automatic threat response to that cue. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Emotional hijacking -- 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it's a very similar concept. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's the idea that I show you an anger cue, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for instance, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and your brain will react with an automatic anger response 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to that cue. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I think women usually get this more than men. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Laughs) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That kind of a hijacking narrative grabs our attention -- 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 just the word 'hijacking" grabs our attention. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The thing is, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 most of the time that's not really how cues work in real life. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If you study history, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 what you find is that we are bombarded with hundreds of thousands of cues 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 every day. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And so what we do is we learn to filter. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We ignore some cues; 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we pay attention to other cues. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 For political violence this becomes really important, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because what it meant is that attackers usually didn't just see an anger cue 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and suddenly snap. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Instead, politicians, social activists spent weeks, months, years 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 flooding the environment with anger cues, for instance. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And attackers -- 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they paid attention to those cues, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they trusted those cues, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they focused on them, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they even memorized those cues. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 All of this just really goes to show how important it is to study history. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's one thing to see how cues operate in a laboratory setting. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And those laboratory experiments are incredibly important. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They give us a lot of new data about how our bodies work. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But it's also very important to see how those cues operate in real life. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So what does all this tell us about political violence? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Political violence is not culturally endemic. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It is not an automatic, predetermined response to environmental stimuli. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We produce it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Our everyday habits produce it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Let's go back actually to those two women that I mentioned at the start. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The first woman had been paying attention to those outrage campaigns, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so she took a gun and approached a soldier at a checkpoint. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But in that moment, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 something really interesting happened. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 She looked at that soldier 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and she thought to herself, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "He's the same age as me. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He looks like me." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And she put down the gun 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and she walked away 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 just from that little bit of similarity. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The second girl had a totally different outcome. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 She also listened to the outrage campaigns, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but she surrounded herself with individuals 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 who were supportive of violence, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 with peers who supported her violence. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 She enclosed herself in an information bubble. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 She focused on certain emotional cues for months. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 She taught herself to bypass certain cultural inhibitions against violence. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 She practiced her plan, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 she taught herself new habits 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and when the time came, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 she took her bomb to the café 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and she followed through with that attack. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This was not impulse. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This was learning. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Polarization in our society is not impulse, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it's learning. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Every day we are teaching ourselves: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the news we click on, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the emotions that we focus on, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the thoughts that we entertain about the red team or the blue team. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 All of this contributes to learning 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 whether we realize it or not. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The good news 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is that while the individuals I study already made their decisions, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we can still change our trajectory. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We might never make the decisions that they made, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but we can stop contributing to violent ecologies. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We can get out of whatever news bubble we're in; 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we can be more mindful about the emotional cues 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that we focus on, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the outrage bait that we click on. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But most importantly, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we can stop seeing each other 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 as just members of the red team or the blue team. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because whether we are Christian, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Muslim, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Jewish, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 aestheist, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Democrat or Republican, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we're human. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We're human beings. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And we often share really similar habits. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We have differences. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Those differences are beautiful 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and those differences are very important. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But our future depends on us 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 being able to find common ground with the other side. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And that's why it is so, so important for us to retrain our brains 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and stop contributing to violent ecologies. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Thank you. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Applause)
