9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Let's keep thinking about how we're[br]going to use illustrator, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to make our, basic drawings. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So when we think about drawing, it is 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 perfectly fine if you have zero drawing[br]skills. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Most people think, that you need to have,[br]um, this like very fluid ability to use 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 a pen or a pencil or charcoal to make[br]something hand drawn, with hand to paper. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 When we're thinking of illustrator we're[br]gonna start with a slightly 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 different format. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We're going to think about the way[br]vectors, so here's a vector image, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the way vectors are really just made of[br]basic shapes. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So the first way to tackle the idea of [br]drawing in illustrator is to just break 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 apart any image, or any idea, into its[br]most fundamental shapes. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So this is actually a really lovely[br]drawing here, done in illustrator. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Uh, very nice sort of vector based[br]portrait, we could call this. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I want you to see what this is. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 What is this made of? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 At its most basic form, we could think[br]about this in terms of 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 basic, basic, basic, shapes. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So, we'll start at the bottom. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We've got this kind of, uh, black shape[br]here. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We've got a blue one. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Basically got a soft kind of round[br]triangle. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We've got some half circles, here's some[br]more half circles. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Y'know the mouth is some sort of a circle[br]with a layer of white over it. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Our hair is basically a circle that's[br]broken up into some wavy shapes. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Our background is just one square of pink. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So we're thinking about sort of looking at[br]illustrations and breaking them down 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 into their most basic forms. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 From there, we can use our basic shapes 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in illustrator to start drawing these[br]objects. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Now this one has some, sort of complicated[br]shapes that we'll get to. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We can do the same with any logo. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So think about how a logo looks. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I want you to start sort of[br]diagnosing it. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Here we've got a circle of, a light, kind[br]of mid-orange color maybe? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We've got a white circle, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and then we have these petal shapes,[br]with some little white yellowish oblongs. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Our straw here is basically just like a[br]line or rectangle, we have our leaf shape. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It's all about basic shapes layered [br]on top of each other, to give the illusion 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of a three dimensional object. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Here, water drops, it's all about the[br]application of 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 color, shading, highlighting, but[br]essentially, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 these are all pretty basic shapes. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So, start to look at things for what they[br]are, in terms of their most basic shape. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 When we're in illustrator, I'm gonna go [br]over the basic shapes today, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 how we use them. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Um, you're gonna start practicing, and I'm[br]gonna give you a practice file to work 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with, where you end up drawing something[br]using just basic shapes. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But let's start looking at our tools, so 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 here I have a single artboard document[br]still. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You can zoom in or zoom out. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We're gonna do all of the work, on this[br]white document. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So starting at the top, of illustrators [br]tools, we have a selection tool, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and a direct selection tool. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 These are gonna be important, we're gonna[br]come back to them in just a minute. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 These are the tools that we will use to [br]edit, our shapes. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So in illustrator we're working with real [br]basic shapes, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we're gonna start with the given tools. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So we got a rectangle tool here. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 If you click and hold, we have rectangle 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 ellipse, circle, polygon, star, [br]line segment. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So let's just start with our basic [br]rectangle tool. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 As you use your tools for shapes, you're[br]simply gonna come into your document, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and click and drag. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Whatever shape you drag to will be the[br]shape that is drawn, now, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 automatically, you see this blue bounding[br]box. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Might be a different color depending on[br]your layers, but, each shape in 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 illustrator is considered to be live. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Unlike photoshop, where we would have [br]something, and we would have to 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 transform it, with edit transform,[br]menu option. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 In illustrator, they're sort of just [br]always live. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So they're kind of always ready to be [br]edited. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And we know that because we can see the[br]bounding box, all these blue lines, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and white boxes, indicate that we can[br]edit the shape, in a number of ways. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 When we're thinking about, drawing a shape[br]and using color, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we have two opportunities. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We have the fill color, which is the[br]entirety of the object, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 as if a paint bucket has been dumped[br]on it. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Or, we have the edge color, which we're[br]gonna call stroke. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We can edit these colors, from a few[br]different places, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we have our properties panel[br]right in the middle. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The appearance is dedicated to how[br]this object looks. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So if I click on the fill-[br]here is my color panel, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I can choose a different color. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You have different kinds of[br]swatches here. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You have color, gradient, [br]pattern, color, etc. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So you can open up [br]different swatches. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We can talk a little bit more[br]about this panel later, um, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but all kinds of opportunities here. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 If you don't like the swatch panel[br]where you are sort of seeing 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 these little boxes of color,[br]then you can use your little 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 palette where you pick [br]from the color spectrum. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And you can always move[br]these around too. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So two different opportunities there. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Now again, we are in the fill color. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 If we choose the stroke color,[br]we are talking about the outer edge. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So, lets pick something really[br]noticeable here. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Lets pick this orange color. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And I am going to increase the weight. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So this is the point --[br]10 point, stroke weight. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 That is that outside line. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 If you don't want to stroke,[br]click back on that and 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 use the none. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Take that stroke off. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We also have opacity here,[br]you are familiar with this. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So if we lower the opacity of this object,[br]you are going to see-through, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 especially if there was another[br]shape behind it. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So that is our basic appearance opportunity. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We can also edit the color[br]from our tools panel. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So here, same opportunity. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 There's that fill, double click,[br]you can choose another color. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 If you want to use the stroke,[br]double click the stroke, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 choose a color. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Okay. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Now here, that stroke is set[br]to one point so I would still 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 have to come over here and[br]make it a little bit bigger 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 if I wanted to see it. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So there is a way to change things. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You also have an eye dropper. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I am going to make another shape[br]really quickly here and 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 change its color just to give us[br]an idea. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Okay. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So if I wanted to pick up a color[br]from somewhere else in the document 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and apply it to this object,[br]it is very important that first 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I select this object. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So I have used my black arrow,[br]which is a selection tool, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and clicked on it. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I know I have it because[br]of the bounding box. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Now if I wanted to use the eye dropper,[br]middle of the tools panel, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to select another color,[br]lets say I really want this 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 same exact blue I have here, [br]I can just click on that blue 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and all of the apperance properities[br]of this blue box will be transferred 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to my other box. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So that is another way[br]to apply color to another object. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Okay, I am going to command Z[br]and back us up, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 close up this little color window[br]and lets talk about our selection tools. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So, first one up is a basic[br]selection tool, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 it is a black arrow. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This is the tool you are going to use [br]to grab your objects. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Notice, as I click on each object,[br]I have selected it, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and now I can move it. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It also opens up the opportunity[br]for the bounding box. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So the bounding box [br]acts like the transform tool 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in photoshop. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I can scale it up or down,[br]it can be bigger, smaller, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 taller, wider. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I am sort of free form scaling right now[br]from this corner. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 If you want to scale proportionally[br]hold shift on your keyboard. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This will keep it in proportion,[br]so same ratio but bigger or smaller. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Otherwise, you are sort of just[br]free form, re-sizing objects 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to fit your need. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 As you are using this tool,[br]the selection tool, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 if you come over to the middle area,[br]you are not on a bounding box, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you are just moving your object --[br]moving your object. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Other opportunities with our black[br]selection tool. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 If you zoom in --[br]I am going to zoom in real close 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to one of these corners. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You can use your zoom and your pan. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You have a little white circle[br]with a blue center on the corner. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This is a corner widget. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The corner widget controls the[br]look of the corner. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So this softens or hardens. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 If I click this and drag in,[br]notice I have created a rounded edge. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So my hard edge rectangle now has[br]a softer corner. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Zoom out and you will notice this has[br]actually done all of the corners at once. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So when you are working [br]with a selection in Illustrator, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we are thinking about vector paths. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 These vector paths determine the shape. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We have points. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So this is end point, [br]this is an end point, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 this is an end point,[br]and path. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Points are connected by paths. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 These are the algorithms that[br]Illustrator uses to make these connections. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Anything with the black arrow tool [br]is working on the entire selection, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the entirety of the object. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Okay. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 If, what we want to do instead[br]is work on one portion of 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the object --[br]lets move to a different object. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Zoom in. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 If we want to target just one corner[br]or one point of the path to make 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 an edit, then we are going to use[br]our direct selection tool. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 White arrow, second tool down. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So you are always going to be[br]going back and forth between these. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Eventually you will get quick enough [br]you can use the keyboard command. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Selection tool is V. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The direct selection too is A. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So if I hit A on my keyboard, [br]I automatically go to that 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 white arrow tool. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So white arrow tool. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Look at the difference. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Remember black arrow,[br]we have got a got a 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 certain type of bounding box. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 White arrow, it changes. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Now, we actually just see the[br]four points that compose the path, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that make up this rectangle. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So now, if I click on one of these,[br]I have targeted just one point. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Notice it has gone blue and[br]the other ones are white. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I have selected just this path. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Now as I move it,[br]I am only editing that one point 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 which of course is determining[br]the difference in the path 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but this is how I have taken a basic[br]rectangle and started to edit it. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 If I want to target this corner, [br]lower left, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 click on that point, again,[br]with the direct selection, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and drag it in. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So already I have sort of [br]begun taking a basic shape and 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 making it more complex. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 When I am done, I can simply click off. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 If I wanted to move this or[br]scale the entire thing, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 back to that selection tool[br]where I have got the entirety 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in a bounding box. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Other opportunities,[br]if we want to use the corner widget 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 only on one corner, [br]use that direct selection tool. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Here, lets soften this. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Notice before, oops,[br]it is actually doing it again. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Command Z. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I need to grab just this corner,[br]so I have now clicked on it once 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to select just this one [br]and now drag it in. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So now I have edited one[br]corner with a corner widget 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 by using direct selection just[br]on that one corner. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So I am starting to get more complex shapes. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Now again as always, [br]you are thinking about 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 your layers panel,[br]you are thinking about layer order. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Lets look at our layers over here. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Layer one has both objects. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Path and rectangle. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Same kind of thing, [br]if you want to edit them, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 remember you need to target them. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You can target by simply clicking [br]in your document or 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 over here. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 If I target on the right, [br]it gives me a little blue box. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 That means I have selected it. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Now you can see I have selected it. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 If we need to re-order,[br]we can change the layer order. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Notice, I can tell I have selected[br]this object and it is targeted, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 this blue one. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I can see its path, [br]it is kind of hidden behind this, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that is layer order. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So always thinking about layer order. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 When we are targeting our objects,[br]we can also thinking about our 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 other transformations,[br]we can rotate from the corners, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 very easy,[br]scale up and down. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We, um, can think about how to [br]fill the background with color. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 A lot of times people say[br]'how do I make a background layer?' 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You could make a new layer if you[br]want to create new layer, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 bring it down to the bottom,[br]then simply think 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 'well, how would I make it?' 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 All I need to do is actually[br]have a shape that fills the entirety 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of the space. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So lets make a shape. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Rectangle tool. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I am just going to click and drag,[br]I am going to go a little bit over 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the boarder and that is fine[br]and it is filling to that default color. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So, if I want it I can double click it[br]over here and bring it back. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Lets say I want it to be[br]kind of a light blue, a purple color. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 That now is my background color. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So background color is simply[br]a filled shape, often a rectangle. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Okay, so we have started to build[br]up our ideas here. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Lets continue looking at the[br]properties of our basic shapes. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I am going to turn the visibility[br]off of these for now. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Remember, layer of visibility [br]is the same, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 its got this little eyeball icon. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 If you want to work on[br]a layer make sure you go to it. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I am going to keep working on this [br]layer one. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Layer two lets rename background color,[br]so we just know. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Okay layer one. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So we have got our rectangle,[br]we explored that one. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 A couple other things to think about-[br]we have quick commands. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 If I hold shift while drawing an object,[br]it will keep it perfectly one to one 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 ratio proportional. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Perfect square. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 That is how I make a perfect square. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Now look, I can't really see this shape[br]because it is being drawn in the same 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 color that I last used for the background. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Lets go to properties,[br]change the color. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Okay, so shift gives you a [br]one to one ratio. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I am going to delete this. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You can also delete your objects by[br]simply clicking on them and 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 hitting the delete button. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Your other option is to use[br]the ALT or option key. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Notice when you do that you[br]get this sort of targeted appearance. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Look at the way its drawing,[br]it is drawing out from the center point. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So if we want to draw out[br]from the center point 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 hold ALT or option. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Lets do that again. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Normally you would draw from[br]a corner. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Notice I have drawn left,[br]I could draw right, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but it is drawing out from the corner. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 ALT, option, draws from the center. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 If you want it to be proportional [br]hold that shift key. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Now it is proportional. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Okay, I am going to delete this object. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So selection tool, grab it, delete. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Other shapes. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Here is our circle, ellipse, same idea-[br]click and drag. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 If you want it to be a sort of oblong,[br]draw that. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 If you want it proportional,[br]shift key. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 There is the way to go. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Sing, direct selection vs selection. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Our selection tool grabs the[br]whole thing. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You can scale it up or down. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Oops. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 See there, be careful,[br]you can always grab your 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 other objects very easily. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So make sure to grab the object you want. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You have this little tool [br]right here, this is an angle tool. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 If you didn't want a full circle,[br]that can be interesting for you. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Lets back up. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You also have the ability to[br]kind of squash it or squish it. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This is taking it out of proportion[br]by using the left or right 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 bounding box areas. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Lets look at the direct selection [br]on an elipse. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So here is my direct selection,[br]I am going to zoom in so 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we can get a closer look at[br]this object. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Here are the points that[br]make up this path. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We have got four points-[br]left, right, top, bottom. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Clicking on a point reveals the[br]way the path is working. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We are going to talk more[br]about this but we have handles here. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Handles control the curves. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So if I edit this handle,[br]notice I am changing 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 this circular shape. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So maybe I really want something[br]that is kind of funky, I don't know, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 strange, edema like shape. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You can draw things in, out,[br]and you can affect the rotation. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So that is how the shape of a[br]circle is made with four points 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and handles, using your direct[br]selection to edit it. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Okay, lets use our selection, delete, [br]and move on in our tools. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Polygon, just like it sounds, multi sided. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So when you are thinking of a polygon, [br]you need to think of 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 'how many sides do I want?' 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The first time you click with[br]a polygon, it is going to ask you 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 'how many sides?' 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So if you want a triangle, [br]click three. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 If you want something else [br]-- lets do it again. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Remember every time you click[br]with the shape tool it is going 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to draw a shape. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You always need to make your shape[br]and then go to a selection tool 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 if you are ready to move it. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Lets do something with six sides. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Okay, there is my six sided. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Now again, every time you click[br]and draw it is going to draw another one. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So I don't want that. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Actually what I want to do [br]is edit this one. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So I am going to go in[br]my selection tool, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 make it bigger, [br]maybe I want to change the color of this one, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 maybe layer order is more important[br]or I want to play with opacity. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I can lower the opacity and[br]see through the blue object 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to this orange one. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Remember if you are trying to[br]move something and 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you can't move it,[br]pay attention to your layer order, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you might have to come in here[br]and take a look at what is happening. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So now I have got a triangle. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Same thing- I can edit it on its[br]individual points. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I can edit the softness, the corner widgets,[br]or I can use my tool to grab just one. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Maybe I want one to be hard[br]and the rest to be soft, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 same kind of corner widgets here[br]if I want to edit just this one. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Target it with that direct selection tool[br]and make your shape. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The only other shape tool that[br]we might be interested in using 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 right now is the star tool. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 That thing draws a line[br]that might be useful 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but most often we are drawing [br]more complex shapes. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Our star tool is as it says. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 When your using your star tool,[br]if you want to change the number 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of shapes, I am sorry,[br]the number of points, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you have to use that ALT option key again. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So before drawing it,[br]hold ALT option and click. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 That will open up the dialog box[br]for changing the number of points. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You could have many, many points.
