WEBVTT 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Let's keep thinking about how we're going to use illustrator, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to make our, basic drawings. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So when we think about drawing, it is 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 perfectly fine if you have zero drawing skills. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Most people think, that you need to have, um, this like very fluid ability to use 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a pen or a pencil or charcoal to make something hand drawn, with hand to paper. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 When we're thinking of illustrator we're gonna start with a slightly 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 different format. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We're going to think about the way vectors, so here's a vector image, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the way vectors are really just made of basic shapes. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So the first way to tackle the idea of drawing in illustrator is to just break 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 apart any image, or any idea, into its most fundamental shapes. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So this is actually a really lovely drawing here, done in illustrator. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Uh, very nice sort of vector based portrait, we could call this. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I want you to see what this is. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 What is this made of? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 At its most basic form, we could think about this in terms of 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 basic, basic, basic, shapes. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So, we'll start at the bottom. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We've got this kind of, uh, black shape here. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We've got a blue one. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Basically got a soft kind of round triangle. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We've got some half circles, here's some more half circles. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Y'know the mouth is some sort of a circle with a layer of white over it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Our hair is basically a circle that's broken up into some wavy shapes. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Our background is just one square of pink. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So we're thinking about sort of looking at illustrations and breaking them down 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 into their most basic forms. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 From there, we can use our basic shapes 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in illustrator to start drawing these objects. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now this one has some, sort of complicated shapes that we'll get to. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We can do the same with any logo. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So think about how a logo looks. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I want you to start sort of diagnosing it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Here we've got a circle of, a light, kind of mid-orange color maybe? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We've got a white circle, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and then we have these petal shapes, with some little white yellowish oblongs. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Our straw here is basically just like a line or rectangle, we have our leaf shape. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's all about basic shapes layered on top of each other, to give the illusion 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of a three dimensional object. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Here, water drops, it's all about the application of 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 color, shading, highlighting, but essentially, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 these are all pretty basic shapes. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So, start to look at things for what they are, in terms of their most basic shape. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 When we're in illustrator, I'm gonna go over the basic shapes today, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 how we use them. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Um, you're gonna start practicing, and I'm gonna give you a practice file to work 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 with, where you end up drawing something using just basic shapes. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But let's start looking at our tools, so 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 here I have a single artboard document still. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You can zoom in or zoom out. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We're gonna do all of the work, on this white document. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So starting at the top, of illustrators tools, we have a selection tool, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and a direct selection tool. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 These are gonna be important, we're gonna come back to them in just a minute. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 These are the tools that we will use to edit, our shapes. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So in illustrator we're working with real basic shapes, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we're gonna start with the given tools. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So we got a rectangle tool here. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If you click and hold, we have rectangle 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 ellipse, circle, polygon, star, line segment. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So let's just start with our basic rectangle tool. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 As you use your tools for shapes, you're simply gonna come into your document, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and click and drag. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Whatever shape you drag to will be the shape that is drawn, now, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 automatically, you see this blue bounding box. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Might be a different color depending on your layers, but, each shape in 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 illustrator is considered to be live. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Unlike photoshop, where we would have something, and we would have to 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 transform it, with edit transform, menu option. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In illustrator, they're sort of just always live. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So they're kind of always ready to be edited. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And we know that because we can see the bounding box, all these blue lines, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and white boxes, indicate that we can edit the shape, in a number of ways. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 When we're thinking about, drawing a shape and using color, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we have two opportunities. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We have the fill color, which is the entirety of the object, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 as if a paint bucket has been dumped on it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Or, we have the edge color, which we're gonna call stroke. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We can edit these colors, from a few different places, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we have our properties panel right in the middle. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The appearance is dedicated to how this object looks. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So if I click on the fill- here is my color panel, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I can choose a different color. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You have different kinds of swatches here. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You have color, gradient, pattern, color, etc. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So you can open up different swatches. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We can talk a little bit more about this panel later, um, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but all kinds of opportunities here. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If you don't like the swatch panel where you are sort of seeing 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 these little boxes of color, then you can use your little 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 palette where you pick from the color spectrum. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And you can always move these around too. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So two different opportunities there. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now again, we are in the fill color. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If we choose the stroke color, we are talking about the outer edge. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So, lets pick something really noticeable here. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Lets pick this orange color. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And I am going to increase the weight. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So this is the point -- 10 point, stroke weight. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That is that outside line. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If you don't want to stroke, click back on that and 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 use the none. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Take that stroke off. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We also have opacity here, you are familiar with this. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So if we lower the opacity of this object, you are going to see-through, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 especially if there was another shape behind it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So that is our basic appearance opportunity. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We can also edit the color from our tools panel. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So here, same opportunity. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There's that fill, double click, you can choose another color. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If you want to use the stroke, double click the stroke, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 choose a color. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Okay. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now here, that stroke is set to one point so I would still 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 have to come over here and make it a little bit bigger 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 if I wanted to see it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So there is a way to change things. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You also have an eye dropper. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I am going to make another shape really quickly here and 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 change its color just to give us an idea. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Okay. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So if I wanted to pick up a color from somewhere else in the document 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and apply it to this object, it is very important that first 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I select this object. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So I have used my black arrow, which is a selection tool, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and clicked on it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I know I have it because of the bounding box. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now if I wanted to use the eye dropper, middle of the tools panel, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to select another color, lets say I really want this 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 same exact blue I have here, I can just click on that blue 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and all of the apperance properities of this blue box will be transferred 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to my other box. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So that is another way to apply color to another object. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Okay, I am going to command Z and back us up, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 close up this little color window and lets talk about our selection tools. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So, first one up is a basic selection tool, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it is a black arrow. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is the tool you are going to use to grab your objects. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Notice, as I click on each object, I have selected it, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and now I can move it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It also opens up the opportunity for the bounding box. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So the bounding box acts like the transform tool 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in photoshop. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I can scale it up or down, it can be bigger, smaller, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 taller, wider. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I am sort of free form scaling right now from this corner. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If you want to scale proportionally hold shift on your keyboard. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This will keep it in proportion, so same ratio but bigger or smaller. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Otherwise, you are sort of just free form, re-sizing objects 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to fit your need. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 As you are using this tool, the selection tool, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 if you come over to the middle area, you are not on a bounding box, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you are just moving your object -- moving your object. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Other opportunities with our black selection tool. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If you zoom in -- I am going to zoom in real close 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to one of these corners. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You can use your zoom and your pan. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You have a little white circle with a blue center on the corner. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is a corner widget. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The corner widget controls the look of the corner. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So this softens or hardens. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If I click this and drag in, notice I have created a rounded edge. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So my hard edge rectangle now has a softer corner. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Zoom out and you will notice this has actually done all of the corners at once. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So when you are working with a selection in Illustrator, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we are thinking about vector paths. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 These vector paths determine the shape. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We have points. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So this is end point, this is an end point, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 this is an end point, and path. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Points are connected by paths. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 These are the algorithms that Illustrator uses to make these connections. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Anything with the black arrow tool is working on the entire selection, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the entirety of the object. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Okay. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If, what we want to do instead is work on one portion of 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the object -- lets move to a different object. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Zoom in. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If we want to target just one corner or one point of the path to make 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 an edit, then we are going to use our direct selection tool. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 White arrow, second tool down. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So you are always going to be going back and forth between these. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Eventually you will get quick enough you can use the keyboard command. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Selection tool is V. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The direct selection too is A. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So if I hit A on my keyboard, I automatically go to that 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 white arrow tool. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So white arrow tool. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Look at the difference. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Remember black arrow, we have got a got a 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 certain type of bounding box. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 White arrow, it changes. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now, we actually just see the four points that compose the path, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that make up this rectangle. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So now, if I click on one of these, I have targeted just one point. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Notice it has gone blue and the other ones are white. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I have selected just this path. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now as I move it, I am only editing that one point 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 which of course is determining the difference in the path 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but this is how I have taken a basic rectangle and started to edit it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If I want to target this corner, lower left, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 click on that point, again, with the direct selection, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and drag it in. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So already I have sort of begun taking a basic shape and 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 making it more complex. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 When I am done, I can simply click off. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If I wanted to move this or scale the entire thing, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 back to that selection tool where I have got the entirety 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in a bounding box. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Other opportunities, if we want to use the corner widget 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 only on one corner, use that direct selection tool. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Here, lets soften this. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Notice before, oops, it is actually doing it again. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Command Z. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I need to grab just this corner, so I have now clicked on it once 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to select just this one and now drag it in. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So now I have edited one corner with a corner widget 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 by using direct selection just on that one corner. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So I am starting to get more complex shapes. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now again as always, you are thinking about 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 your layers panel, you are thinking about layer order. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Lets look at our layers over here. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Layer one has both objects. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Path and rectangle. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Same kind of thing, if you want to edit them, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 remember you need to target them. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You can target by simply clicking in your document or 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 over here. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If I target on the right, it gives me a little blue box. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That means I have selected it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now you can see I have selected it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If we need to re-order, we can change the layer order. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Notice, I can tell I have selected this object and it is targeted, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 this blue one. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I can see its path, it is kind of hidden behind this, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that is layer order. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So always thinking about layer order. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 When we are targeting our objects, we can also thinking about our 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 other transformations, we can rotate from the corners, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 very easy, scale up and down. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We, um, can think about how to fill the background with color. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 A lot of times people say 'how do I make a background layer?' 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You could make a new layer if you want to create new layer, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 bring it down to the bottom, then simply think 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 'well, how would I make it?' 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 All I need to do is actually have a shape that fills the entirety 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of the space. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So lets make a shape. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Rectangle tool. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I am just going to click and drag, I am going to go a little bit over 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the boarder and that is fine and it is filling to that default color. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So, if I want it I can double click it over here and bring it back. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Lets say I want it to be kind of a light blue, a purple color. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That now is my background color. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So background color is simply a filled shape, often a rectangle. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Okay, so we have started to build up our ideas here. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Lets continue looking at the properties of our basic shapes. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I am going to turn the visibility off of these for now. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Remember, layer of visibility is the same, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 its got this little eyeball icon. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If you want to work on a layer make sure you go to it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I am going to keep working on this layer one. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Layer two lets rename background color, so we just know. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Okay layer one. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So we have got our rectangle, we explored that one. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 A couple other things to think about- we have quick commands. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If I hold shift while drawing an object, it will keep it perfectly one to one 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 ratio proportional. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Perfect square. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That is how I make a perfect square. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now look, I can't really see this shape because it is being drawn in the same 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 color that I last used for the background. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Lets go to properties, change the color. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Okay, so shift gives you a one to one ratio. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I am going to delete this. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You can also delete your objects by simply clicking on them and 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 hitting the delete button. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Your other option is to use the ALT or option key. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Notice when you do that you get this sort of targeted appearance. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Look at the way its drawing, it is drawing out from the center point. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So if we want to draw out from the center point 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 hold ALT or option. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Lets do that again. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Normally you would draw from a corner. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Notice I have drawn left, I could draw right, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but it is drawing out from the corner. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 ALT, option, draws from the center. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If you want it to be proportional hold that shift key. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now it is proportional. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Okay, I am going to delete this object. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So selection tool, grab it, delete. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Other shapes. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Here is our circle, ellipse, same idea- click and drag. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If you want it to be a sort of oblong, draw that. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If you want it proportional, shift key. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There is the way to go. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Sing, direct selection vs selection. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Our selection tool grabs the whole thing. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You can scale it up or down. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Oops. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 See there, be careful, you can always grab your 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 other objects very easily. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So make sure to grab the object you want. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You have this little tool right here, this is an angle tool. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If you didn't want a full circle, that can be interesting for you. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Lets back up. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You also have the ability to kind of squash it or squish it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is taking it out of proportion by using the left or right 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 bounding box areas. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Lets look at the direct selection on an elipse. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So here is my direct selection, I am going to zoom in so 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we can get a closer look at this object. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Here are the points that make up this path. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We have got four points- left, right, top, bottom. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Clicking on a point reveals the way the path is working. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We are going to talk more about this but we have handles here. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Handles control the curves. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So if I edit this handle, notice I am changing 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 this circular shape. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So maybe I really want something that is kind of funky, I don't know, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 strange, edema like shape. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You can draw things in, out, and you can affect the rotation. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So that is how the shape of a circle is made with four points 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and handles, using your direct selection to edit it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Okay, lets use our selection, delete, and move on in our tools. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Polygon, just like it sounds, multi sided. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So when you are thinking of a polygon, you need to think of 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 'how many sides do I want?' 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The first time you click with a polygon, it is going to ask you 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 'how many sides?' 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So if you want a triangle, click three. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If you want something else -- lets do it again. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Remember every time you click with the shape tool it is going 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to draw a shape. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You always need to make your shape and then go to a selection tool 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 if you are ready to move it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Lets do something with six sides. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Okay, there is my six sided. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now again, every time you click and draw it is going to draw another one. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So I don't want that. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Actually what I want to do is edit this one. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So I am going to go in my selection tool, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 make it bigger, maybe I want to change the color of this one, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 maybe layer order is more important or I want to play with opacity. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I can lower the opacity and see through the blue object 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to this orange one. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Remember if you are trying to move something and 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you can't move it, pay attention to your layer order, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you might have to come in here and take a look at what is happening. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So now I have got a triangle. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Same thing- I can edit it on its individual points. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I can edit the softness, the corner widgets, or I can use my tool to grab just one. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Maybe I want one to be hard and the rest to be soft, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 same kind of corner widgets here if I want to edit just this one. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Target it with that direct selection tool and make your shape. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The only other shape tool that we might be interested in using 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 right now is the star tool. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That thing draws a line that might be useful 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but most often we are drawing more complex shapes. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Our star tool is as it says. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 When your using your star tool, if you want to change the number 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of shapes, I am sorry, the number of points, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you have to use that ALT option key again. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So before drawing it, hold ALT option and click. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That will open up the dialog box for changing the number of points. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You could have many, many points.
