9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 this video is sponsored by envato[br]elements[br]hey guys how's it going hope you're[br]having a wonderful day in this video[br]tutorial i'll create this digital[br]illustration from start to finish[br]while also showing you an incredible new[br]photo bashing technique which will[br]really help you add photographic[br]detail in your artwork quickly and[br]effectively you'll also learn how to use[br]images in 3d to help you in your digital[br]painting or concept art workflow[br]so without wasting any more time let's[br]do this[br]so the first thing i do is to drop a[br]base plate image onto the canvas[br]this is really helpful because now i can[br]build stuff on top of it[br]and i can take color reference to this[br]base image[br]after that i added a photograph of the[br]sky because[br]right now i'm looking to establish some[br]sort of horizon[br]and get the basic sky and water done i[br]chose a dramatic sky[br]to create more interest in the artwork[br]next i selected a blue color and started[br]painting some rock shapes[br]these rocks are at a distance so i used[br]a lighter value of blue for them[br]then i moved on to the bigger rock shape[br]in the mid ground[br]i used a darker valley of blue for this[br]one because it's closer to us as viewers[br]i also added a little rock to accompany[br]the big one just to add some contrast in[br]terms of size[br]now the area in the middle is too empty[br]so i created some more shapes there[br]again these would be at a distance so[br]comparatively[br]lighter value is used for them they are[br]also taller and pointier at the top so[br]we have a combination of three types of[br]interesting shapes[br]on the very left we have some shapes[br]that look like distant mountains[br]on the right side we have some big[br]blocky shapes closer to us[br]and in the middle we have some really[br]interesting taller[br]rocks that almost look like a man-made[br]structure just to balance these shapes[br]out in the composition[br]we can of course tweak some shapes here[br]and there view the artwork at a distance[br]and see what looks best to the eye now i[br]darken the sky at the top left create a[br]vignette effect and to keep the viewers[br]interest in the middle of the[br]composition[br]this also washed out some details on the[br]sky and added a cool[br]dark cloud effect which i'm really[br]enjoying i also made a selection around[br]the cloud in the middle[br]copied it rescaled it and transformed it[br]to the point where it looked[br]good i also want to mention that[br]sometimes using a photo[br]as it is in your artwork might limit[br]your creativity[br]when it comes to composition so you can[br]either change the photo significantly or[br]you can first[br]paint the shapes just like i did for[br]this artwork after you paint the main[br]shapes and compositions you can add[br]photographic details[br]later let me show you the technique[br]through which we're gonna add those[br]photographic details[br]we'll do that using something called the[br]layer mask so let's say i want to have[br]this rock in my painting[br]i'll fill this rock with a solid color[br]we'll name this layer as[br]rock shape now i have this picture of a[br]rock here[br]i'll just put it over my rock shape[br]layer[br]now it's very important that our rock[br]shape and the photo texture image both[br]are on separate layers the photo texture[br]layer should be on the top[br]of the painted layer now here's what you[br]gotta do you gotta move your mouse[br]cursor between these two layers[br]then press and hold the alt key and then[br]click see what happens[br]the photo texture layer is inside the[br]rock shape layer[br]you can move it transform it warp it[br]experiment with it as much as you like[br]until it looks good once you're happy[br]with it here's what you need to[br]do click on this icon which says layer[br]mask[br]right at the bottom of this layers menu[br]it will add this white box next to your[br]texture layer[br]now click on that box and with the black[br]color selected[br]use your paint bucket tool to fill that[br]black color[br]on your rock see what happens the[br]texture is gone but we're gonna paint[br]the texture back so[br]choose the texture brush that you like[br]and this time select the white color now[br]start painting on the rock and see the[br]magic happen[br]so for this technique to work in this[br]artwork it's very important that these[br]rock shapes are on separate layers[br]using the same technique that i just[br]showed i inserted[br]a photograph of this mountain into the[br]shape of those[br]rocks i painted earlier i transformed it[br]resized it moved it around until i felt[br]like it fitted better then i created a[br]layer mask[br]filled it out with black so it[br]disappeared from the canvas and then[br]selected the white color and painted the[br]underlaying photograph[br]back into the artwork i'm painting it on[br]the right side of the rock where the[br]light is hitting[br]if i want to paint back the details i[br]have to select the white color and if i[br]want to erase what i painted i select[br]black i also adjusted the levels and[br]erased the photo where it's not needed[br]now using the same brush tool if you[br]paint it with black color[br]it will erase the texture layer and if[br]you paint it with white[br]it will add that underlying texture this[br]is a really really useful technique[br]i'll be using the same method to create[br]photographic details on all of the other[br]shapes that i painted[br]starting with the one on the left this[br]technique saves us a lot of time[br]now some artists might want to hand[br]paint all those details using custom[br]brushes[br]instead of photos and that's fine too[br]but that would take a lot of time and[br]mostly for concept art jobs you don't[br]have much time[br]you are required to produce results fast[br]and generate[br]ideas very quickly so you gotta find[br]ways to speed up the process[br]that's where these photos in 3d come in[br]they really add a ton of detail in a[br]very little time[br]also it happens very often that you[br]create two to three artworks[br]send it to the client and to them only[br]one is usable[br]and the other two might be discarded so[br]if you put hours and hours working[br]on that excruciating detail in an[br]artwork and the client just discards it[br]it'll hurt more compared to something[br]you spent[br]a few hours on you wouldn't worry about[br]that but this reveals a true fact[br]the client doesn't give a damn about how[br]long you have spent on the details of[br]those rocks he doesn't care if you have[br]used custom brushes or photos or 3d what[br]he's interested in is the final result[br]the whole artwork[br]does it solve a problem for the client[br]does it convey the mood[br]does it give direction to the 3d artists[br]to work from[br]if it does all of the other stuff is not[br]important[br]so here as you can see i've used photo[br]texture on[br]all of the distant mountains and i've[br]added another rock shape in the middle[br]so we have the basic composition ready[br]we have the sky[br]and the sea and the distant mountains[br]now we need a pirate ship i need to get[br]a photograph of a pirate ship exactly[br]for[br]this particular angle i need it from the[br]back view and it needs to fit here on[br]the left side of my composition[br]it should also be copyright free and[br]it's better if it's a png so that i[br]don't have to kill myself[br]making clean selections around all those[br]ropes and stuff[br]of course you can spend several hours[br]looking for the perfect photo to fit[br]into your artwork but if you're smart[br]and want to save time[br]you can use the 3d asset from envato[br]elements which is also the sponsor for[br]today's video if you don't know what[br]envato elements[br]is it's a must-have tool for artists and[br]creatives they have a huge[br]library of over 52 million assets that[br]you can use in your creative projects[br]which include royalty free stock photos[br]footage fonts[br]music templates graphics 3d and more let[br]me show you how it works[br]so i needed a pirate ship for my artwork[br]here on the search bar i selected 3d[br]and entered pirate ship it gave me a lot[br]of assets to choose from[br]i selected the one that i like rotated[br]it to[br]an angle that i needed and hit download[br]this photo was downloaded as png which i[br]can slap[br]right onto my composition in photoshop[br]it's that easy[br]no need to make selections around a[br]photo no need to waste your time[br]removing background of the image[br]just set it to the right angle download[br]it and use it in your artwork you can[br]download as many assets as you want with[br]just[br]one subscription which is really[br]affordable and worth every dollar so use[br]the link down in the description to get[br]your subscription[br]now you won't regret it trust me on this[br]one so now we have the ship in[br]our artwork i made some color[br]adjustments to the ship[br]made a selection around it and on a new[br]layer filled that selection with[br]a dark blue color then i created a new[br]layer mask around this layer and[br]painted back the details of the shape[br]mostly on the right side where the light[br]should be hitting i also kept some of[br]the areas blue[br]and in shadow with less detail this[br]really helped the ship[br]fit in the environment better i also[br]transformed the ship[br]and tried to correct the angle which i[br]felt was slightly off then i painted[br]shadow just[br]underneath the ship with a darker color[br]of blue and also some waves and water[br]splashes using one of my favorite[br]brushes[br]by the way if you want to get this free[br]brush pack please feel free to download[br]it through the link below[br]i don't think you'd need any other brush[br]if you have this brush back[br]it's massive after that i'll just be[br]tweaking some levels correcting some[br]edges and painting some light and shadow[br]on the ship[br]mostly i use only one brush to do that i[br]call it the father of all brushes[br]if you want to see that in action go[br]check out my other video on free brushes[br]and their use[br]i'll link it here that video did really[br]well by the way[br]you all seem to like it very much so[br]thank you so much for your appreciation[br]by the way if you haven't joined the[br]discord channel i'll put a link down in[br]the description for you[br]you can share your artwork and stuff[br]there i really enjoy looking at all of[br]your[br]artwork i also plan to do some paint[br]over videos in the future so make sure[br]you drop your entries and i might be[br]able to repaint your artwork there are[br]illustrations that i do for my freelance[br]clients[br]and commissioned work i can't post them[br]on youtube because[br]youtube is for videos right so i post[br]those artworks on instagram[br]if you haven't followed me there please[br]do you'll find so much exclusive content[br]there[br]alright so once i finished working on[br]the ship i moved on to the sky[br]i wanted the clouds to be a lot bigger[br]to kind of fill[br]the left side of my composition i also[br]wanted the whites of the clouds to show[br]behind the ship[br]it will make the ship's form re-better[br]after that[br]i refined the edges and i'll add some[br]highlights on the ship[br]mostly on our right side of those sails[br]the sails also look[br]very dark at the moment so i'll add a[br]lighter color at the bottom of them[br]after that[br]some more white splashes just underneath[br]the ship[br]and highlights on the water i added some[br]more splashes on those[br]rocks as well next it's time to work on[br]the big rock[br]on the front so i found a suitable[br]picture scaled it up[br]used the texture of the rocks within[br]that shape i painted i'll experiment[br]with it[br]move it around and see where it looks[br]good once i'm happy with it[br]i'll change some settings play around[br]with levels and color adjustments[br]to make it a bit darker and bluish so[br]that it fits better in the environment[br]then i thought i'd paint some highlights[br]maybe some greens at some of the places[br]on this big rock so yeah i'm doing that[br]the foreground looked too empty so i[br]painted some more rock shapes in the[br]foreground i[br]made them relatively darker i'll work on[br]it later but first[br]that distant pointy mountain doesn't[br]look very good to me it's too[br]distracting so[br]i just corrected that and then there are[br]some minor adjustments with the texture[br]of this front[br]rock i cut a little patch from that[br]photo and pasted it on top of the area[br]where it looked[br]weird and then corrected the brightness[br]and color temperature to[br]match everything i felt this rock lacked[br]shadows so i painted some darks where[br]needed i often use a soft[br]round brush with a low opacity to create[br]separation between things that are at[br]different distances[br]just like i did with these rocks it's a[br]really handy technique and helps a lot[br]in creating some atmospheric perspective[br]in your scenes[br]i also darkened the water just beneath[br]the big rock and painted some more[br]details on the water waves emerging from[br]the back of the ship[br]and now i'll be adding a photo texture[br]to the foreground rocks and match color[br]later on using levels saturation color[br]balance and brightness sliders i also[br]picked up some 3d trees from envato[br]elements[br]matched their lighting and color to our[br]artwork and put them on the foreground i[br]darkened the sky from the top left but[br]kept the clouds fairly lighter after[br]that i just made some quick little[br]adjustments here and there[br]and then i selected a light brownish[br]color set the layers blending mode to[br]color[br]dodge and painted highlights on[br]different areas mainly at the top edges[br]of the rocks[br]and even on the background lastly i[br]added some birds and made[br]minor adjustments overall i'm really[br]happy with the results[br]let me know what you guys think i hope[br]you learned something from this video[br]if you liked it please leave a thumbs up[br]i'd really appreciate that[br]also don't forget to comment down below[br]to write your thoughts and suggestions i[br]really enjoy reading your comments[br]and if you're new to this channel
