envato\Nelements\Nhey guys how's it going hope you're\Nhaving a wonderful day in this video\Ntutorial i'll create this digital\Nillustration from start to finish\Nwhile also showing you an incredible new\Nphoto bashing technique which will\Nreally help you add photographic\Ndetail in your artwork quickly and\Neffectively you'll also learn how to use\Nimages in 3d to help you in your digital\Npainting or concept art workflow\Nso without wasting any more time let's\Ndo this\Nso the first thing i do is to drop a\Nbase plate image onto the canvas\Nthis is really helpful because now i can\Nbuild stuff on top of it\Nand i can take color reference to this\Nbase image\Nafter that i added a photograph of the\Nsky because\Nright now i'm looking to establish some\Nsort of horizon\Nand get the basic sky and water done i\Nchose a dramatic sky\Nto create more interest in the artwork\Nnext i selected a blue color and started\Npainting some rock shapes\Nthese rocks are at a distance so i used\Na lighter value of blue for them\Nthen i moved on to the bigger rock shape\Nin the mid ground\Ni used a darker valley of blue for this\None because it's closer to us as viewers\Ni also added a little rock to accompany\Nthe big one just to add some contrast in\Nterms of size\Nnow the area in the middle is too empty\Nso i created some more shapes there\Nagain these would be at a distance so\Ncomparatively\Nlighter value is used for them they are\Nalso taller and pointier at the top so\Nwe have a combination of three types of\Ninteresting shapes\Non the very left we have some shapes\Nthat look like distant mountains\Non the right side we have some big\Nblocky shapes closer to us\Nand in the middle we have some really\Ninteresting taller\Nrocks that almost look like a man-made\Nstructure just to balance these shapes\Nout in the composition\Nwe can of course tweak some shapes here\Nand there view the artwork at a distance\Nand see what looks best to the eye now i\Ndarken the sky at the top left create a\Nvignette effect and to keep the viewers\Ninterest in the middle of the\Ncomposition\Nthis also washed out some details on the\Nsky and added a cool\Ndark cloud effect which i'm really\Nenjoying i also made a selection around\Nthe cloud in the middle\Ncopied it rescaled it and transformed it\Nto the point where it looked\Ngood i also want to mention that\Nsometimes using a photo\Nas it is in your artwork might limit\Nyour creativity\Nwhen it comes to composition so you can\Neither change the photo significantly or\Nyou can first\Npaint the shapes just like i did for\Nthis artwork after you paint the main\Nshapes and compositions you can add\Nphotographic details\Nlater let me show you the technique\Nthrough which we're gonna add those\Nphotographic details\Nwe'll do that using something called the\Nlayer mask so let's say i want to have\Nthis rock in my painting\Ni'll fill this rock with a solid color\Nwe'll name this layer as\Nrock shape now i have this picture of a\Nrock here\Ni'll just put it over my rock shape\Nlayer\Nnow it's very important that our rock\Nshape and the photo texture image both\Nare on separate layers the photo texture\Nlayer should be on the top\Nof the painted layer now here's what you\Ngotta do you gotta move your mouse\Ncursor between these two layers\Nthen press and hold the alt key and then\Nclick see what happens\Nthe photo texture layer is inside the\Nrock shape layer\Nyou can move it transform it warp it\Nexperiment with it as much as you like\Nuntil it looks good once you're happy\Nwith it here's what you need to\Ndo click on this icon which says layer\Nmask\Nright at the bottom of this layers menu\Nit will add this white box next to your\Ntexture layer\Nnow click on that box and with the black\Ncolor selected\Nuse your paint bucket tool to fill that\Nblack color\Non your rock see what happens the\Ntexture is gone but we're gonna paint\Nthe texture back so\Nchoose the texture brush that you like\Nand this time select the white color now\Nstart painting on the rock and see the\Nmagic happen\Nso for this technique to work in this\Nartwork it's very important that these\Nrock shapes are on separate layers\Nusing the same technique that i just\Nshowed i inserted\Na photograph of this mountain into the\Nshape of those\Nrocks i painted earlier i transformed it\Nresized it moved it around until i felt\Nlike it fitted better then i created a\Nlayer mask\Nfilled it out with black so it\Ndisappeared from the canvas and then\Nselected the white color and painted the\Nunderlaying photograph\Nback into the artwork i'm painting it on\Nthe right side of the rock where the\Nlight is hitting\Nif i want to paint back the details i\Nhave to select the white color and if i\Nwant to erase what i painted i select\Nblack i also adjusted the levels and\Nerased the photo where it's not needed\Nnow using the same brush tool if you\Npaint it with black color\Nit will erase the texture layer and if\Nyou paint it with white\Nit will add that underlying texture this\Nis a really really useful technique\Ni'll be using the same method to create\Nphotographic details on all of the other\Nshapes that i painted\Nstarting with the one on the left this\Ntechnique saves us a lot of time\Nnow some artists might want to hand\Npaint all those details using custom\Nbrushes\Ninstead of photos and that's fine too\Nbut that would take a lot of time and\Nmostly for concept art jobs you don't\Nhave much time\Nyou are required to produce results fast\Nand generate\Nideas very quickly so you gotta find\Nways to speed up the process\Nthat's where these photos in 3d come in\Nthey really add a ton of detail in a\Nvery little time\Nalso it happens very often that you\Ncreate two to three artworks\Nsend it to the client and to them only\None is usable\Nand the other two might be discarded so\Nif you put hours and hours working\Non that excruciating detail in an\Nartwork and the client just discards it\Nit'll hurt more compared to something\Nyou spent\Na few hours on you wouldn't worry about\Nthat but this reveals a true fact\Nthe client doesn't give a damn about how\Nlong you have spent on the details of\Nthose rocks he doesn't care if you have\Nused custom brushes or photos or 3d what\Nhe's interested in is the final result\Nthe whole artwork\Ndoes it solve a problem for the client\Ndoes it convey the mood\Ndoes it give direction to the 3d artists\Nto work from\Nif it does all of the other stuff is not\Nimportant\Nso here as you can see i've used photo\Ntexture on\Nall of the distant mountains and i've\Nadded another rock shape in the middle\Nso we have the basic composition ready\Nwe have the sky\Nand the sea and the distant mountains\Nnow we need a pirate ship i need to get\Na photograph of a pirate ship exactly\Nfor\Nthis particular angle i need it from the\Nback view and it needs to fit here on\Nthe left side of my composition\Nit should also be copyright free and\Nit's better if it's a png so that i\Ndon't have to kill myself\Nmaking clean selections around all those\Nropes and stuff\Nof course you can spend several hours\Nlooking for the perfect photo to fit\Ninto your artwork but if you're smart\Nand want to save time\Nyou can use the 3d asset from envato\Nelements which is also the sponsor for\Ntoday's video if you don't know what\Nenvato elements\Nis it's a must-have tool for artists and\Ncreatives they have a huge\Nlibrary of over 52 million assets that\Nyou can use in your creative projects\Nwhich include royalty free stock photos\Nfootage fonts\Nmusic templates graphics 3d and more let\Nme show you how it works\Nso i needed a pirate ship for my artwork\Nhere on the search bar i selected 3d\Nand entered pirate ship it gave me a lot\Nof assets to choose from\Ni selected the one that i like rotated\Nit to\Nan angle that i needed and hit download\Nthis photo was downloaded as png which i\Ncan slap\Nright onto my composition in photoshop\Nit's that easy\Nno need to make selections around a\Nphoto no need to waste your time\Nremoving background of the image\Njust set it to the right angle download\Nit and use it in your artwork you can\Ndownload as many assets as you want with\Njust\None subscription which is really\Naffordable and worth every dollar so use\Nthe link down in the description to get\Nyour subscription\Nnow you won't regret it trust me on this\None so now we have the ship in\Nour artwork i made some color\Nadjustments to the ship\Nmade a selection around it and on a new\Nlayer filled that selection with\Na dark blue color then i created a new\Nlayer mask around this layer and\Npainted back the details of the shape\Nmostly on the right side where the light\Nshould be hitting i also kept some of\Nthe areas blue\Nand in shadow with less detail this\Nreally helped the ship\Nfit in the environment better i also\Ntransformed the ship\Nand tried to correct the angle which i\Nfelt was slightly off then i painted\Nshadow just\Nunderneath the ship with a darker color\Nof blue and also some waves and water\Nsplashes using one of my favorite\Nbrushes\Nby the way if you want to get this free\Nbrush pack please feel free to download\Nit through the link below\Ni don't think you'd need any other brush\Nif you have this brush back\Nit's massive after that i'll just be\Ntweaking some levels correcting some\Nedges and painting some light and shadow\Non the ship\Nmostly i use only one brush to do that i\Ncall it the father of all brushes\Nif you want to see that in action go\Ncheck out my other video on free brushes\Nand their use\Ni'll link it here that video did really\Nwell by the way\Nyou all seem to like it very much so\Nthank you so much for your appreciation\Nby the way if you haven't joined the\Ndiscord channel i'll put a link down in\Nthe description for you\Nyou can share your artwork and stuff\Nthere i really enjoy looking at all of\Nyour\Nartwork i also plan to do some paint\Nover videos in the future so make sure\Nyou drop your entries and i might be\Nable to repaint your artwork there are\Nillustrations that i do for my freelance\Nclients\Nand commissioned work i can't post them\Non youtube because\Nyoutube is for videos right so i post\Nthose artworks on instagram\Nif you haven't followed me there please\Ndo you'll find so much exclusive content\Nthere\Nalright so once i finished working on\Nthe ship i moved on to the sky\Ni wanted the clouds to be a lot bigger\Nto kind of fill\Nthe left side of my composition i also\Nwanted the whites of the clouds to show\Nbehind the ship\Nit will make the ship's form re-better\Nafter that\Ni refined the edges and i'll add some\Nhighlights on the ship\Nmostly on our right side of those sails\Nthe sails also look\Nvery dark at the moment so i'll add a\Nlighter color at the bottom of them\Nafter that\Nsome more white splashes just underneath\Nthe ship\Nand highlights on the water i added some\Nmore splashes on those\Nrocks as well next it's time to work on\Nthe big rock\Non the front so i found a suitable\Npicture scaled it up\Nused the texture of the rocks within\Nthat shape i painted i'll experiment\Nwith it\Nmove it around and see where it looks\Ngood once i'm happy with it\Ni'll change some settings play around\Nwith levels and color adjustments\Nto make it a bit darker and bluish so\Nthat it fits better in the environment\Nthen i thought i'd paint some highlights\Nmaybe some greens at some of the places\Non this big rock so yeah i'm doing that\Nthe foreground looked too empty so i\Npainted some more rock shapes in the\Nforeground i\Nmade them relatively darker i'll work on\Nit later but first\Nthat distant pointy mountain doesn't\Nlook very good to me it's too\Ndistracting so\Ni just corrected that and then there are\Nsome minor adjustments with the texture\Nof this front\Nrock i cut a little patch from that\Nphoto and pasted it on top of the area\Nwhere it looked\Nweird and then corrected the brightness\Nand color temperature to\Nmatch everything i felt this rock lacked\Nshadows so i painted some darks where\Nneeded i often use a soft\Nround brush with a low opacity to create\Nseparation between things that are at\Ndifferent distances\Njust like i did with these rocks it's a\Nreally handy technique and helps a lot\Nin creating some atmospheric perspective\Nin your scenes\Ni also darkened the water just beneath\Nthe big rock and painted some more\Ndetails on the water waves emerging from\Nthe back of the ship\Nand now i'll be adding a photo texture\Nto the foreground rocks and match color\Nlater on using levels saturation color\Nbalance and brightness sliders i also\Npicked up some 3d trees from envato\Nelements\Nmatched their lighting and color to our\Nartwork and put them on the foreground i\Ndarkened the sky from the top left but\Nkept the clouds fairly lighter after\Nthat i just made some quick little\Nadjustments here and there\Nand then i selected a light brownish\Ncolor set the layers blending mode to\Ncolor\Ndodge and painted highlights on\Ndifferent areas mainly at the top edges\Nof the rocks\Nand even on the background lastly i\Nadded some birds and made\Nminor adjustments overall i'm really\Nhappy with the results\Nlet me know what you guys think i hope\Nyou learned something from this video\Nif you liked it please leave a thumbs up\Ni'd really appreciate that\Nalso don't forget to comment down below\Nto write your thoughts and suggestions i\Nreally enjoy reading your comments\Nand if you're new to this channel please\Nconsider subscribing and hitting the\Nnotification bell so you don't miss any\Nfuture videos\Nalright
