0:00:00.080,0:00:06.480 Xi Jiping is in a life or death power struggle. [br]Is he more on the death side of things? 0:00:09.680,0:00:11.680 Welcome to China Uncensored, I’m Chris Chappell. 0:00:11.680,0:00:18.600 [br]It seems in all likelihood 0:00:18.600,0:00:23.680 He Weidong, one of China’s top [br]generals, has been purged. 0:00:23.680,0:00:28.720 And if we’re talking about purges and [br]clandestine power struggles at the highest 0:00:28.720,0:00:32.880 ranks of the Chinese Communist [br]Party, you know what that means! 0:00:32.880,0:00:40.080 It’s time for another episode of the People’s [br]favorite Communist soap opera—General Hostility. 0:00:40.080,0:00:46.560 Previously on General Hostility, after more [br]than a decade in power, Xi Jinping has purged 0:00:46.560,0:00:52.560 millions of Chinese Communist officials [br]in his so-called anti-corruption campaign. 0:00:52.560,0:01:00.080 But anti-corruption is just a front for Xi’s [br]true intentions! Trying to take over the world! 0:01:00.080,0:01:05.760 Ok, it’s actually purging disloyal officials [br]to solidify his power over the CCP. And then 0:01:05.760,0:01:11.280 trying to take over the world! But in [br]the face of a trade war with America, 0:01:11.280,0:01:17.440 and a fraying economy at [br]home, are Xi’s days numbered? 0:01:17.440,0:01:19.120 I love that show. 0:01:19.120,0:01:19.680 So yes, 0:01:19.680,0:01:24.800 Since Xi Jinping came to power in [br]2012, he’s purged a lot of people, 0:01:24.800,0:01:26.720 Particularly in the military. 0:01:26.720,0:01:30.880 This is pretty typical in Communist [br]China. It happens every 10-15 years. 0:01:30.880,0:01:38.160 In 1959, Mao Zedong purged Marshal Peng Dehuai, [br]China’s Defense Minister at the time. Why? Because 0:01:38.160,0:01:44.080 Peng resisted Mao’s cult of personality. [br]He obviously lost that power struggle. 0:01:44.080,0:01:48.080 That sparked a huge round [br]of purges in the military. 0:01:48.080,0:01:50.160 Fast forward to the 1970s. 0:01:50.160,0:01:55.840 Mao’s chosen successor, Marshal Lin [br]Biao, allegedly tried to assassinate Mao, 0:01:55.840,0:02:01.200 And so Mao began another massive purge [br]of top officials in the military. 0:02:01.200,0:02:03.680 When Deng Xiaoping led the CCP, 0:02:03.680,0:02:08.960 a failed Chinese invasion of Vietnam [br]led to another round of purges. 0:02:08.960,0:02:14.000 When Jiang Zemin came to power in [br]the 90s, boom, more military purges. 0:02:14.000,0:02:15.360 You get the idea. 0:02:15.360,0:02:20.720 Purging the military is just what CCP leaders [br]do. It’s on their list, along with genociding 0:02:20.720,0:02:26.240 a religious and/or ethnic minority of their [br]choice, and trying to take over the world. 0:02:26.240,0:02:31.120 When Xi Jinping became the leader of the [br]CCP, he was in a massive power struggle 0:02:31.120,0:02:38.000 with a political faction tied to former CCP [br]leader and current pickled toad Jiang Zemin. 0:02:38.000,0:02:43.520 So of course he purged all the military [br]officials promoted under Jiang. Well, 0:02:43.520,0:02:45.840 almost all of the military officials. 0:02:45.840,0:02:49.760 Xi purged General Guo Boxiong, [br]who was in charge of military 0:02:49.760,0:02:54.240 development and General Xu Caihou, [br]who was the political commissar. 0:02:54.240,0:02:56.560 They had been in charge for a long time, 0:02:56.560,0:03:02.160 so almost every top Chinese military [br]official had been promoted by them. 0:03:02.160,0:03:04.640 Xi’s purge was devastating. 0:03:04.640,0:03:09.280 He completely reorganized the People’s [br]Liberation Army command structure. 0:03:09.280,0:03:12.640 And all the top positions [br]were now filled with people 0:03:12.640,0:03:16.880 Xi personally promoted for their loyalty to him. 0:03:16.880,0:03:22.320 And that’s what’s so weird about this recent [br]round of purges. Xi is getting rid of people 0:03:22.320,0:03:27.600 like He Weidong, who are widely [br]believed to be Xi Jinping allies. 0:03:27.600,0:03:33.360 He Weidong was big. He got what’s called [br]in Chinese politics, a helicopter ride. 0:03:33.360,0:03:38.800 Xi promoted him several ranks at once, right [br]to the top. In 2019, he was put in charge of 0:03:38.800,0:03:44.000 China’s Eastern Command. In other words, [br]the guys who would be invading Taiwan. 0:03:44.000,0:03:50.240 Then two years ago, He was promoted to be [br]number three in China’s Central Military 0:03:50.240,0:03:55.120 Commission—that’s the group that controls [br]the military. The number one position is, 0:03:55.120,0:03:58.400 obviously Xi Jinping. [br]But the number two position 0:03:58.400,0:04:02.080 is Zhang Youxia, the only survivor 0:04:02.080,0:04:06.640 of the purges of General Guo [br]Boxiong and General Xu Caihou. 0:04:06.640,0:04:11.760 So if you were placing bets on who Xi would [br]purge, you’d think Zhang Youxia , who was 0:04:11.760,0:04:15.680 promoted by the generals appointed by [br]Xi Jinping’s arch enemy, would be way 0:04:15.680,0:04:21.760 more likely. So why was it He Weidong? [br]Well, since this is the opaque world of 0:04:21.760,0:04:26.560 inner Communist Party politics, there are [br]several explanations floating around. 0:04:26.560,0:04:30.720 According to Miles Yu, who’s the director [br]of the China Center at the Hudson Institute, 0:04:30.720,0:04:34.800 When Xi collapsed all the different [br]departments of the PLA during his big 0:04:34.800,0:04:40.560 reorganization I mentioned earlier, this [br]created a lot of overlap. Redundancies. 0:04:40.560,0:04:46.560 So with Generals Zhang Youxia and He Weidong,[br]“They have overlapping core competencies.” 0:04:46.560,0:04:52.320 “that's why you got enormous internal struggle [br]and fight against each other for favor. So it's 0:04:52.320,0:04:57.120 basically a turf war and that's why Xi [br]Jinping had to sacrifice one of them.” 0:04:57.120,0:05:02.800 Of course that doesn’t really explain why it was [br]He Weidong that got purged and not Zhang Youxia. 0:05:02.800,0:05:05.200 So here’s another explanation. 0:05:05.200,0:05:08.400 It has to do with this guy—Miao Hua. 0:05:08.400,0:05:11.680 Miao was another member of the [br]Central Military Commission, 0:05:11.680,0:05:16.720 and Xi Jinping’s main propaganda [br]guy for the military. So, 0:05:16.720,0:05:22.960 a major Xi ally in the military. And he [br]got purged. That was a few months ago. 0:05:22.960,0:05:27.520 Sinoinsider, a risk consultancy that [br]specializes in elite Chinese politics, 0:05:27.520,0:05:33.440 suggests his purge could have been similar [br]to Chairman Mao’s purge of Lin Biao —a 0:05:33.440,0:05:37.920 close ally that may have become too [br]ambitious for the Great Helmsman. 0:05:37.920,0:05:41.440 “In the process of advancing [br]Xi’s political objectives, 0:05:41.440,0:05:45.600 Miao could have inadvertently [br]cultivated his own power base, 0:05:45.600,0:05:51.920 or was perceived by Xi as having cultivated a [br]power base that could threaten his interests.” 0:05:51.920,0:05:56.240 Life as a CCP official sounds very [br]stressful. If you don’t get enough power, 0:05:56.240,0:06:00.640 you get purged. If you get too much [br]power, you also get purged. If you 0:06:00.640,0:06:05.600 even look like you might be getting [br]too much power, you still get purged. 0:06:05.600,0:06:12.720 So if you’re about to get purged, what can you [br]do to save yourself? Rat other people out. 0:06:12.720,0:06:16.800 According to Yuan Hongbing, an [br]Australia-based Chinese dissident, 0:06:16.800,0:06:23.040 Miao Hua, in order to save his own skin, [br]made sweeping accusations of disloyalty. 0:06:23.040,0:06:30.960 How sweeping? He accused around 1,300 people at [br]all ranks of the Chinese military of disloyalty, 0:06:30.960,0:06:34.880 including people above him, like He Weidong. 0:06:34.880,0:06:39.200 But then there’s yet another [br]explanation floating around out there— 0:06:39.200,0:06:44.400 Xi Jinping is out of power. [br]As in, totally out of power. 0:06:44.400,0:06:47.520 And General Zhang Youxia, [br]the number two guy in the 0:06:47.520,0:06:51.360 Central Military Commission is really in charge. 0:06:51.360,0:06:56.880 That’s why Xi allies are being purged. [br]Because now there’s a new guy at the top. 0:06:56.880,0:07:01.760 As the guy basically in charge of China’s [br]military, Zhang would have a ton of power. 0:07:01.760,0:07:05.360 And Xi has certainly made himself [br]a lot of enemies over the years. 0:07:05.360,0:07:07.840 And with the Chinese economy struggling 0:07:07.840,0:07:10.000 Young people unable to find work 0:07:10.000,0:07:13.040 And a growing trade war with the United States 0:07:13.040,0:07:17.440 Maybe enough people within the Chinese [br]Communist Party have had enough. 0:07:17.440,0:07:21.360 And there certainly have been [br]coup *attempts* against Xi before. 0:07:21.360,0:07:24.240 But there are some problems with this. 0:07:24.240,0:07:29.680 Rumors of a *successful* coup against [br]Xi have obviously not always panned out. 0:07:29.680,0:07:34.000 And looking at Chinese state-run media, you [br]don’t get a sense that Xi’s going anywhere. 0:07:34.000,0:07:39.840 Instead you see, Xi Jinping Thought on [br]Culture leads path to national rejuvenation 0:07:39.840,0:07:46.480 And Senior official calls for thoroughly studying, [br]implementing Xi Jinping Thought on Culture 0:07:46.480,0:07:49.760 Officials at all levels, [br]particularly in the military, 0:07:49.760,0:07:54.640 are still being told to study [br]Xi’s writings and speeches. 0:07:54.640,0:07:57.200 Typically in Chinese Communist power struggles, 0:07:57.200,0:08:02.960 *before* one faction topples another, they create [br]a narrative around it to sway public opinion. 0:08:02.960,0:08:09.520 If Xi really were out of power, you wouldn’t [br]expect his propaganda to be so prominent. 0:08:09.520,0:08:12.960 The real test of Xi’s power will come in 2027 0:08:12.960,0:08:15.360 at the 21st Party Congress. 0:08:15.360,0:08:21.720 And whether or not he gets, “elected” to [br]another 5 years as China’s supreme leader. 0:08:21.720,0:08:27.120 Oh but don’t worry, there’s plenty of General [br]Hostility to watch before then. In fact, there are 0:08:27.120,0:08:34.400 signs that there are bigger purges ahead. Not just [br]in the military, but throughout the entire CCP. 0:08:34.400,0:08:38.960 Last month two CCP officials switched jobs. Now, 0:08:38.960,0:08:42.960 that might not sound earthshaking, [br]but it’s highly unusual. 0:08:42.960,0:08:46.320 In fact, unlike the military [br]purges that happen every decade, 0:08:46.320,0:08:51.440 this has never happened before [br]since the CCP took over China. 0:08:51.440,0:08:56.320 This is Shi Taifeng, who was in charge [br]of the United Front Work Department. 0:08:56.320,0:09:03.200 He swapped jobs with this guy, Li Ganjie, who was [br]in charge of the Central Organization Department. 0:09:03.200,0:09:08.800 The United Front is an incredibly important [br]department, because it’s in charge of influencing 0:09:08.800,0:09:15.840 and subverting others for the CCP. Both [br]inside China and internationally. For example, 0:09:15.840,0:09:22.000 all the influence campaigns targeting foreign [br]politicians are run by the United Front. 0:09:22.000,0:09:24.800 These pandas? United Front operatives. 0:09:24.800,0:09:30.640 But the Central Organization Department is even [br]more important than the United Front. Because it’s 0:09:30.640,0:09:37.680 essentially the Human Resources Department for [br]the CCP. Except this HR Department can purge you. 0:09:37.680,0:09:42.320 So if Xi Jinping is moving Shi Taifeng, [br]who’s considered one of his allies, 0:09:42.320,0:09:48.880 to head the Central Organization Department, [br]that’s pretty big. Personnel issues are now 0:09:48.880,0:09:54.880 a bigger priority for Xi than the United [br]Front’s influence and subversion campaigns. 0:09:54.880,0:10:00.960 According to SinoInsider, “The move foreshadows a [br]sweeping purge or reassignment of officials in the 0:10:00.960,0:10:06.320 Party, the government, and the military, [br]as well as major personnel changes.” 0:10:06.320,0:10:08.000 You know what that means. 0:10:08.000,0:10:12.000 In the Chinese Communist [br]Party, there is only one rule: 0:10:12.000,0:10:16.240 live by the power struggle, [br]die by the power struggle. 0:10:16.240,0:10:23.680 After a decade of purges, Xi Jinping still hasn’t [br]won. Will Xi start an earthquake inside the CCP, 0:10:23.680,0:10:30.560 purged officials falling left and right? [br]Or will he himself finally be toppled? 0:10:30.560,0:10:36.080 Find out next time, on General Hostility. 0:10:36.080,0:10:39.840 This show is only possible because [br]of support from viewers like you. 0:10:41.120,0:10:44.880 Subscribe to our premium [br]website chinauncensored.tv. 0:10:44.880,0:10:48.400 There’s a bunch of exclusive content [br]there you can’t see anywhere else 0:10:48.400,0:10:52.400 And you’ll be supporting all these free [br]episodes on YouTube so we can fight back 0:10:52.400,0:10:55.840 against the Chinese Communist [br]Party.
