9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Hello, and welcome to EduKatedSTEM. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I am Kate, the founder of EduKatedSTEM, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and today we're going to be talking 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 about networking, So sometimes you 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 might be qualified for the role. You might 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 apply for the role, but you don't even 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 get interviewed. And maybe if you had 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 utilized your network or had built a network, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you would have a completely different 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 outcome. So, this is one of the reasons 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 why I'm going to encourage you to develop, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 build a network, and then nurture it so 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that when you are ready to move on, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you can work with your network. Let 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 them know that you are looking for 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 another opportunity, And maybe you 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 can utilize them to get informational 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 interviews or other things. But the first 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 thing is, you need to network. Now, when 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I mentioned that word did a chill, go 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 down your spine? I've had a lot of 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 conversations with individuals who 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 think networking has kind of a horrible 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 connotation. It's slimy. It is kind of 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 using people you know to get your 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 own way or for your own benefit. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But it goes both ways, right? So, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 they're in your network. You could 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 potentially help them. They might 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 be looking for that as well. And 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you're going to be building a network 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of friends and colleagues. So, these 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 are going to be people that you want 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to be connected with. You're not 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 going to be, hopefully meeting someone 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that you don't want to be talking 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to in the future, because that is going 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to be uncomfortable for you. So, let's 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 talk about maybe networking at a 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 conference because, as a scientist, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 this is what you're going to be doing. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Hopefully you're going to go to a 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 conference you're going to listen 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to presentations. You're going to 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 learn new information. You might 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 present a poster, you might present 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 an oral presentation. And then 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 hopefully you're going to talk with 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 your peers, maybe meeting new 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 people. Maybe figuring out who 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you might want to be working for 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 or with in the future. So, networking 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 isn't a bad thing, But I'm going to 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 encourage you to go in with plan. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And I've seen a number of networking 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 talks. At ABRCMS I saw a talk 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 specifically for networking for introverts, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 which was very, very good, but I 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 thought a lot of the information 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 was also quite pertinent to people 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 who were not introverts. So I'm an 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 introvert. I find the concept of going 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to conferences and going to networking 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 events. It's challenging. It really is. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But I force myself to do it because 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you know, the more you do it, the 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 easier it becomes. And I take advice 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 from my friend Mary Mitchell and 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 she always said, when you go, just 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 have a goal in mind. So, if your goal 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 is to meet a certain person, then 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that is what you try and do. If it's 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to meet a certain number of people, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 then you know three to five individuals 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in and to have a good conversation 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with them, then that is what you do. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Once you have met your your goal, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 your requirement, it's then up to you 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 if you then choose to leave the 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 networking event. But hopefully 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 by that point, you will feel comfortable. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You've made some friends. You 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 might actually want to stay. When 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you're going to a conference, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 especially nowadays, a lot of the 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 time you will get information on a 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 conference app. so ABRCMS 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 definitely does that. The National 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Postdoc Association does that. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And they actually use the same app. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I might completely kill the pronunciation 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Whova, I'm not sure but it's a good 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 little app. It has a list of all of the 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 attendees. It has the presentations, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 where they are, what the talks are. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You can go on and you can highlight. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Yes, I want to go to these presentations, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and then you have an itinerary, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and then the app can say, you know, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you've got to talk in 10 minutes in this 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 place, so it's very, very helpful. But 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you can utilize the app to kind of 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 come up with a plan for what you 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 want to do for networking. So, maybe 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 there is someone in your field that 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you are absolutely dying to meet. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Are they on the list of attendees? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 If they are, are they speaking? If 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 they're speaking you absolutely 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 know where they're going to be 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 at one point of time. So you could 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 try and go and speak to them after 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 they have finished. Or maybe you 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 just know that they're going to be 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 there so, maybe you try and have 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 a conversation in a more relaxed 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 setting. So, maybe over a coffee, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 or you see them at a lunch table, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and you ask if you can join them. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Whatever it is, if there are certain 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 people that you want to meet, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 then let's try and make that happen. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Why do you want to meet them? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Maybe you want to potentially work 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with them in the future. You just 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 want to have a chat about an 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 experiment or a paper that they've done. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Whatever it is. So let's focus on 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 what we want to get out of that. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And maybe there are other people 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 there who would be helpful, someone 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 who works at an institution that 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you're interested in working at, but 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 not necessarily that individual. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You can have a conversation with 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 them and find out is it a great place 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to work? Maybe you'll have a 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 chat to them and go. Oh, I don't 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 want to do that. I don't want to move 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 on. So look at the conference 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 attendees and see who you might 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 be interested in working for or talking 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to. And the next thing is be prepared. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So, as a graduate student, you might 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 not have the opportunity to have 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 graduate sorry, to have business cards. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But maybe your graduate school 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 will purchase them for you. We used 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to make them for our graduate students. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So that was a possibility. If not 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Vistaprint or something very similar, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 will make you cards for actually quite 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 cheap. So, I designed my business 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 card on Vistaprint. I think I got a 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 thousand of them for $25 or 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 something. It's really not that 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 expensive, and you can, you know, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 put your name, an email address, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I don't put my phone number 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 because I don't want people 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 phoning me at random times. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And if you've got a website, then 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 put that information on there. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You could always, if you get a 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 obviously a smaller number of 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 them, you could say where you 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 currently are, that you're a graduate 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 student or a postdoc, you can 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 always personalize it even more 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and say, you know, this is your field. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I'm looking for jobs or whatever it is. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You can pop it in there. So even 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 if your institution won't give you 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 a business card, then maybe you 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 can kind of get some made. You 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 might want to take a few copies 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of your CV or resume with you. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You know if you have a particular 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 person that you want to meet 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and you want to share your work 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with them, you could always print 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 a copy of a paper or an abstract 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 or something and attempt to give 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 it to them. I will say that people 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 have tried to give me CV's, resumes, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 papers in the past, and I'm gonna 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 be honest. You get home, and 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you don't really do much with 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 them. Business cards, yes, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 know, I have a big stack of them. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Then it's really funny because 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 somebody will email and be like, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Kate I met you at this conference. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We spoke, and if I can't remember 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 them, then I'll go through my 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 stack of business cards. I'm like, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 did I meet you? Because if I know 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that I've met you, then you know 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 my response is probably gonna 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 be more helpful. Or like, if you see 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 me speak and you say, Kate, I saw 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 your seminar on this, rather than 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Kate, I want this from you. Then 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 obviously, I'm going to be more 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 helpful to the person who you 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 know opens up with I saw you 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 at this thing and I would like your 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 advice. So I don't know about 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 giving things other than a business 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 card. But you want their business card. If they can give you a business card that's really helpful, because then you can find them on LinkedIn. You can send them an email. And even if it's just you know it was wonderful to meet you at this meeting, I would love to stay in touch. Or if there's a question or something that you can kind of talk about following your conversation. Kind of move it on. And that's always really helpful to kind of get them into your network. Obviously, if they're at a conference and you email them that night or something, then it might take a few days for them to respond because they're really conference,
