WEBVTT 00:00:00.080 --> 00:00:05.520 To win the trade war, the  CCP just needs one thing. 00:00:05.520 --> 00:00:07.760 Welcome to China Uncensored. I’m Chris Chappell. 00:00:07.760 --> 00:00:10.860 The US-China trade war has been going on for  three weeks now, 00:00:10.860 --> 00:00:12.560 and you know what that means. 00:00:12.560 --> 00:00:14.320 It’s time to panic! 00:00:14.320 --> 00:00:19.600 If you go on X, you’ll see posts with millions  of views claiming that US ports are empty. 00:00:19.600 --> 00:00:22.160 That there are zero cargo ships. 00:00:22.160 --> 00:00:26.080 That you should panic buy rice and toilet paper. 00:00:28.480 --> 00:00:31.017 Yes! Finally! My time has come! 00:00:31.017 --> 00:00:35.368 I’ve  been hoarding toilet paper since 2020. 00:00:37.760 --> 00:00:41.040 It’s made living in New York  City slightly challenging. 00:00:41.040 --> 00:00:42.740 But it’s all worth it now. 00:00:42.740 --> 00:00:45.360 Time to sell it all for profit! 00:00:45.360 --> 00:00:47.680 Wait, what’s that, Shelley? 00:00:47.680 --> 00:00:49.440 None of that is true? 00:00:50.000 --> 00:00:54.560 Ports are not empty, and there are  definitely cargo ships heading to the US. 00:00:54.560 --> 00:00:57.227 And people should not panic buy  rice, 00:00:57.227 --> 00:00:59.360 which is grown in America, 00:00:59.360 --> 00:01:04.560 or toilet paper, which is made in America. 00:01:04.560 --> 00:01:08.560 Fine, fine. 00:01:08.560 --> 00:01:11.170 I guess if you start seeing toilet paper  shortages, 00:01:11.170 --> 00:01:12.720 that’s not because of the trade war, 00:01:12.720 --> 00:01:16.400 that’s because people got freaked  out by stupid social media posts. 00:01:16.400 --> 00:01:19.760 The vast majority of food  shouldn’t be affected, either. 00:01:19.760 --> 00:01:22.320 If you panic buy anything,  it should probably be things 00:01:22.320 --> 00:01:25.440 like back-to-school supplies  and Christmas decorations. 00:01:25.440 --> 00:01:28.084 I’m not saying there won’t be shortages of  made in China stuff. 00:01:28.084 --> 00:01:29.680 There probably will be, 00:01:29.680 --> 00:01:31.921 but we won’t see that in stores  for weeks, 00:01:31.921 --> 00:01:33.640 or even months down the line. 00:01:33.640 --> 00:01:36.706 Chinese products will also get more  expensive. 00:01:36.706 --> 00:01:38.800 But we don’t know how expensive. 00:01:38.800 --> 00:01:43.360 There’s a lot of uncertainty right  now, and a lot of fearmongering. 00:01:43.360 --> 00:01:45.287 Which is great for the Chinese  Communist Party. 00:01:45.287 --> 00:01:49.520 Because they need the Trump administration to back down on tariffs. 00:01:49.520 --> 00:01:53.756 And if the CCP can convince Americans they  should hate the tariffs, 00:01:53.756 --> 00:01:55.840 they might have a shot. 00:01:55.840 --> 00:01:58.905 I’ll tell you why the CCP wants this so badly  in a minute. 00:01:58.905 --> 00:02:02.406 But first, you know YouTube has been soft censoring this channel 00:02:02.406 --> 00:02:05.840 , but you can  subvert YouTube’s censorship by subscribing 00:02:05.840 --> 00:02:07.980 to our free weekly newsletter. 00:02:07.980 --> 00:02:11.500 Each newsletter  has links to all our episodes each week, 00:02:11.500 --> 00:02:14.522 plus extra analysis you won’t see anywhere else— 00:02:14.522 --> 00:02:16.019 and  it’s free. 00:02:16.019 --> 00:02:18.320 Sign up now. The link is below. 00:02:18.320 --> 00:02:21.149 Ok, so the CCP wants the US to lower their  tariffs. 00:02:21.149 --> 00:02:23.810 Because if the tariffs continue at this level, 00:02:23.810 --> 00:02:28.400 China is going to  be much worse off than the US. 00:02:28.400 --> 00:02:30.993 Yes, US consumers will feel some pain. 00:02:30.993 --> 00:02:33.840 But  like I explained in a previous episode, 00:02:33.840 --> 00:02:37.601 China now more than ever depends on exports 00:02:37.601 --> 00:02:40.720 to  keep its economy going and people employed. 00:02:40.720 --> 00:02:44.390 That’s because the Chinese real estate market  has already collapsed. 00:02:44.390 --> 00:02:47.725 And that’s the other major driver of the Chinese economy. 00:02:47.725 --> 00:02:52.320 So they  NEED to export stuff. That’s all they have. 00:02:52.320 --> 00:02:55.597 Now, Goldman Sachs estimates that US tariffs 00:02:55.597 --> 00:03:00.240 could endanger 16 million export jobs in China. 00:03:00.240 --> 00:03:02.560 And that’s probably on the low end. 00:03:02.560 --> 00:03:05.760 In a trade war, the country  that’s the bigger exporter 00:03:05.760 --> 00:03:07.379 will generally be hit harder. 00:03:07.379 --> 00:03:09.360 And that’s China. 00:03:09.360 --> 00:03:11.893 Chinese workers are in even more trouble 00:03:11.893 --> 00:03:15.200 because  China’s been fighting deflation for years. 00:03:15.200 --> 00:03:18.080 China’s economy is in a deflationary spiral. 00:03:18.080 --> 00:03:23.040 That’s when prices fall, which means  companies can’t afford to pay people as much, 00:03:23.040 --> 00:03:24.260 so wages fall. 00:03:24.260 --> 00:03:27.280 And that means  people don’t want to buy stuff, 00:03:27.280 --> 00:03:31.537 so consumer demand falls, which means prices  fall even further. 00:03:31.537 --> 00:03:33.440 And it keeps on going. 00:03:33.440 --> 00:03:37.920 China’s been fighting deflation ever since  their disastrous Zero Covid policy. 00:03:37.920 --> 00:03:42.320 Turns out it's hard for businesses to survive when  everyone is locked inside their apartments. 00:03:42.320 --> 00:03:45.040 The real estate crisis also made deflation worse, 00:03:45.040 --> 00:03:47.205 because people’s savings were wiped out. 00:03:47.205 --> 00:03:50.560 And a bunch of people lost their jobs, too. 00:03:50.560 --> 00:03:54.640 The New York Times talked to a guy who  was a construction worker and a plumber. 00:03:54.640 --> 00:03:56.800 “When times were good, Mr. Wang said, 00:03:56.800 --> 00:04:00.717 he could make as much as $13,600 a year. 00:04:00.717 --> 00:04:03.520 Now he’s lucky if he can make half that.” 00:04:03.520 --> 00:04:05.008 Think about that for a second. 00:04:05.008 --> 00:04:10.240 Even during  the good times, his income was several thousand dollars 00:04:10.240 --> 00:04:12.710 below the poverty line in the  US. 00:04:12.710 --> 00:04:15.280 Now he’s not even making half of that. 00:04:15.280 --> 00:04:17.530 So China’s economy is on shaky ground. 00:04:17.530 --> 00:04:19.840 And tariffs are making things worse, 00:04:19.840 --> 00:04:22.720 by endangering more Chinese jobs. 00:04:22.720 --> 00:04:25.241 But the Chinese Communist Party is digging in. 00:04:25.241 --> 00:04:28.800 And they’re really good at narrative warfare. 00:04:28.800 --> 00:04:32.730 I’ve shown you why China is going to be hit  harder by tariffs than the US. 00:04:32.730 --> 00:04:37.201 So the trick is, the CCP needs to make Americans THINK 00:04:37.201 --> 00:04:40.720 they’re  the ones who will be hit harder instead. 00:04:40.720 --> 00:04:44.514 And to do that, the CCP is relying on the perception 00:04:44.514 --> 00:04:47.807 that Chinese people can  eat bitterness, 00:04:47.807 --> 00:04:49.760 but Americans can’t. 00:04:49.760 --> 00:04:53.190 Eating bitterness is the Chinese term for  enduring hardships. 00:04:53.190 --> 00:04:54.720 Basically, suffering. 00:04:54.720 --> 00:04:56.800 Chinese leader Xi Jinping has repeatedly told 00:04:56.800 --> 00:05:00.880 the Chinese people that they need to eat  bitterness for the good of the nation. 00:05:00.880 --> 00:05:03.920 I talked in a previous episode  about how young Chinese people 00:05:03.920 --> 00:05:07.680 don’t seem quite as willing to eat  bitterness as previous generations. 00:05:07.680 --> 00:05:10.400 But in narrative warfare, that doesn’t matter, 00:05:10.400 --> 00:05:12.375 as long as Americans THINK 00:05:12.375 --> 00:05:15.040 Chinese  people are willing to suffer more. 00:05:15.040 --> 00:05:17.010 Which is why China’s Foreign Ministry 00:05:17.010 --> 00:05:20.080 is  releasing propaganda videos like this. 00:05:20.080 --> 00:05:23.750 “History has proven compromise won’t earn you mercy 00:05:23.750 --> 00:05:29.120 . Kneeling only invites more  bullying. China won’t kneel down.”) 00:05:29.120 --> 00:05:32.509 The rest of the video calls America  an arrogant imperialist, 00:05:32.509 --> 00:05:35.830 and shows China leading the world in solidarity 00:05:35.830 --> 00:05:39.280 against America over some heroic music. 00:05:39.280 --> 00:05:42.090 The message is clearly that America is the bad guy 00:05:42.090 --> 00:05:45.760 and it better give up, because China never will. 00:05:45.760 --> 00:05:50.320 That same message is being repeated  in the CCP’s domestic propaganda. 00:05:50.320 --> 00:05:53.123 Earlier this week, Beijing Daily  published an article called “ 00:05:53.123 --> 00:05:57.680 Today, it is necessary to revisit On Protracted War.” 00:05:57.680 --> 00:06:01.696 On Protracted War was a series of speeches made by  Chairman Mao 00:06:01.696 --> 00:06:04.960 during the Sino-Japanese War in 1938. 00:06:04.960 --> 00:06:07.531 This Beijing Daily article is very  Marxist. 00:06:07.531 --> 00:06:09.200 It blames America’s problems 00:06:09.200 --> 00:06:10.679 on the capitalist system 00:06:10.679 --> 00:06:13.280 , it talks  a lot about dialectal materialism, 00:06:13.280 --> 00:06:17.440 and it repeatedly refers  to the “US-China struggle.” 00:06:17.440 --> 00:06:20.226 I’ve talked before about how “struggle”  or “douzheng” 00:06:20.226 --> 00:06:22.400 is the communist concept of 00:06:22.400 --> 00:06:28.320 designating an enemy and mobilizing the  entire society to “struggle” against it. 00:06:28.320 --> 00:06:30.720 In this case, the enemy is obviously the US. 00:06:30.720 --> 00:06:33.285 According to the article, “The  Party Central Committee 00:06:33.285 --> 00:06:38.160 had already anticipated the long-term  nature of the China-U.S. rivalry 00:06:38.160 --> 00:06:43.120 and proactively laid out plans for  future major power competition.” 00:06:43.120 --> 00:06:46.384 In other words, the CCP is in it for the  long haul. 00:06:46.384 --> 00:06:48.080 The gist of the article is 00:06:48.080 --> 00:06:51.390 warning that the US-China struggle will  not be over quickly, 00:06:51.390 --> 00:06:53.402 but that the CCP, 00:06:53.402 --> 00:06:59.440 sorry, “the people” will ultimately  win over the imperialist Americans. 00:06:59.440 --> 00:07:01.498 So that’s what the CCP is saying. 00:07:01.498 --> 00:07:05.440 But what’s  actually happening in China right now? 00:07:05.440 --> 00:07:08.290 Well, since it’s an authoritarian state  with total control 00:07:08.290 --> 00:07:09.920 over its domestic media 00:07:09.920 --> 00:07:12.571 and a huge online censorship apparatus, 00:07:12.571 --> 00:07:15.520 we’re  not going to get a totally clear picture. 00:07:15.520 --> 00:07:17.050 But we do know some things 00:07:17.050 --> 00:07:20.240 . And it  looks like the CCP is saying one thing, 00:07:20.240 --> 00:07:23.040 and doing another. What a surprise! 00:07:23.040 --> 00:07:24.592 First, you know that earlier this month, 00:07:24.592 --> 00:07:27.920 the  CCP put additional tariffs on US imports, 00:07:27.920 --> 00:07:29.843 in retaliation for US tariffs. 00:07:29.843 --> 00:07:33.920 But now,  it looks like the CCP is going to exempt 00:07:33.920 --> 00:07:35.986 some US products from those tariffs, 00:07:35.986 --> 00:07:39.680 because they really really need them. 00:07:39.680 --> 00:07:42.400 “Those products include certain semiconductors and 00:07:42.400 --> 00:07:46.160 chipmaking equipment, medical  products and aviation parts.” 00:07:46.160 --> 00:07:48.087 They could also exempt chemicals like ethane, 00:07:48.087 --> 00:07:51.200 which China uses to make a ton of plastics. 00:07:51.200 --> 00:07:52.610 Does that sound like a compromise, 00:07:52.610 --> 00:07:55.320 even though  the CCP swore they would never do that? 00:07:55.320 --> 00:08:00.078 Yeah, they’re going to be flexible with their  tariffs on US goods when they need to be 00:08:00.078 --> 00:08:03.200 —but they don’t want people to know about it. 00:08:03.200 --> 00:08:06.880 In fact, Caijing Magazine, which was  the first to report that China was 00:08:06.880 --> 00:08:08.790 going to exempt semiconductors, 00:08:08.790 --> 00:08:10.240 seems to have been censored. 00:08:10.240 --> 00:08:12.265 Meanwhile, Chinese export companies 00:08:12.265 --> 00:08:14.720 are trying to survive the US tariffs. 00:08:14.720 --> 00:08:17.952 Some smaller factories are temporarily pausing  operations 00:08:17.952 --> 00:08:20.080 or even completely shutting down. 00:08:20.080 --> 00:08:23.114 (Others are trying to get around tariffs by using  transshipment— 00:08:23.114 --> 00:08:26.914 for example sending products to be assembled in countries like Cambodia 00:08:26.914 --> 00:08:30.560 and  Vietnam, which then get re-routed to the US. 00:08:30.560 --> 00:08:33.200 There are even reports of Chinese companies asking 00:08:33.200 --> 00:08:37.520 Indian exporters to fill their  orders for their US customers. 00:08:37.520 --> 00:08:40.720 The idea is the Indian companies  would fulfill the orders, 00:08:40.720 --> 00:08:43.280 and pay the Chinese companies a commission. 00:08:43.280 --> 00:08:47.760 And foreign companies are trying to move  their manufacturing out of China, too. 00:08:47.760 --> 00:08:51.545 For example, Apple is trying to  source all of its US iPhones 00:08:51.545 --> 00:08:53.421 from India instead of China. 00:08:53.421 --> 00:08:56.560 And they’re  looking to do it as soon as next year. 00:08:56.560 --> 00:08:59.520 The CCP isn’t a fan of that idea though. 00:08:59.520 --> 00:09:04.520 CCP officials are trying to stop Apple  from moving their iPhone manufacturing equipment 00:09:04.520 --> 00:09:09.040 out of China. Yeah, they’re  kind of taking machines hostage. 00:09:09.040 --> 00:09:10.640 Well, that’s awkward. 00:09:10.640 --> 00:09:13.840 Foreign clothing manufacturers are  also trying to get out of China. 00:09:13.840 --> 00:09:16.390 Or even sending Chinese workers to  factories 00:09:16.390 --> 00:09:18.400 in the Philippines or Vietnam. 00:09:18.400 --> 00:09:21.380 And factory owners from Hong Kong and Taiwan 00:09:21.380 --> 00:09:25.454 are trying to avoid physically being at their own factories in China 00:09:25.454 --> 00:09:29.280 , because they’re worried  about being kidnapped by Chinese authorities. 00:09:29.280 --> 00:09:31.470 Ok, so forget taking machines hostage. 00:09:31.470 --> 00:09:34.560 People  are worried China will take people hostage. 00:09:34.560 --> 00:09:36.160 Wouldn’t be the first time. 00:09:36.160 --> 00:09:40.240 So doing business in China is like  staying at the Hotel California. 00:09:40.240 --> 00:09:43.520 You can check out anytime you  like, but you can never leave. 00:09:43.520 --> 00:09:47.377 Side note: I don’t know if it still is, but in  the early 2000s, 00:09:47.377 --> 00:09:52.117 Hotel California was one of the most popular Western songs in China 00:09:52.117 --> 00:09:53.583 . You could  not get away from it. 00:09:53.583 --> 00:09:56.080 And I have no idea why. 00:09:56.080 --> 00:09:57.140 Anyway, the point is, 00:09:57.140 --> 00:10:00.160 Chinese factories are  trying to get their products out of China, 00:10:00.160 --> 00:10:03.840 and foreign companies are trying to  get their factories out of China. 00:10:03.840 --> 00:10:08.640 Which means, the US tariffs are…actually working. 00:10:08.640 --> 00:10:12.320 At least in terms of decoupling  US manufacturing from China. 00:10:12.320 --> 00:10:14.120 And that’s good news for Americans. 00:10:14.120 --> 00:10:17.520 Because  we don’t want our economy to be held hostage 00:10:17.520 --> 00:10:22.400 by a regime that will…literally hold  people hostage to get what they want. 00:10:22.400 --> 00:10:25.493 Especially since the CCP also sees  America 00:10:25.493 --> 00:10:27.840 as a threat to its survival. 00:10:27.840 --> 00:10:29.784 And it’s not just me saying that. 00:10:29.784 --> 00:10:33.040 Here’s  Cold War historian Professor Stephen Kotkin. 00:10:33.040 --> 00:10:37.581 “The existence of the American  system ipso facto threatens 00:10:37.581 --> 00:10:40.450 the survival of the Communist Party 00:10:40.450 --> 00:10:45.920 because it's a  freer—it's an open, successful alternative.”) 00:10:45.920 --> 00:10:50.080 Kotkin goes on to say that it doesn’t  matter what US policy is toward China, 00:10:50.080 --> 00:10:54.800 the CCP will always see the  US as standing in its way. 00:10:54.800 --> 00:10:58.160 That’s pretty clear from their  latest propaganda narrative. 00:10:58.160 --> 00:10:59.760 “China won’t kneel down”) 00:10:59.760 --> 00:11:00.809 So what happens now? 00:11:00.809 --> 00:11:04.540 The CCP refuses  to back down, at least publicly. 00:11:04.540 --> 00:11:06.940 But companies are actually leaving China 00:11:06.940 --> 00:11:09.840 and China’s economy is getting wrecked. 00:11:09.840 --> 00:11:15.520 Can the CCP actually force people to eat  bitterness and ride out the trade war? 00:11:15.520 --> 00:11:19.326 Yes they can, because they’re an authoritarian state 00:11:19.326 --> 00:11:23.360 . But that doesn’t mean there  won’t eventually be consequences. 00:11:23.360 --> 00:11:26.800 Look at what happened during  the Zero Covid lockdowns. 00:11:26.800 --> 00:11:30.080 Eventually Chinese people reached a breaking point 00:11:30.080 --> 00:11:31.497 and started to protest. 00:11:31.497 --> 00:11:35.040 Which is the  Communist Party’s worst nightmare. 00:11:35.040 --> 00:11:37.264 The best case scenario for the CCP 00:11:37.264 --> 00:11:40.880 is that  the US simply backs down from all the tariffs, 00:11:40.880 --> 00:11:43.520 under pressure from various interest groups. 00:11:43.520 --> 00:11:47.278 To do that, the CCP needs to convince  Americans that China 00:11:47.278 --> 00:11:49.420 is too strong to get hurt, 00:11:49.420 --> 00:11:52.400 and America is the one getting screwed. 00:11:52.400 --> 00:11:56.560 In other words, China needs  to win the narrative war. 00:11:56.560 --> 00:12:00.960 Which means these posts  are exactly what it needs. 00:12:00.960 --> 00:12:03.143 And unfortunately the Trump  administration 00:12:03.143 --> 00:12:05.880 doesn’t seem to be doing a good job of telling Americans  00:12:05.880 --> 00:12:09.680 why tariffs on China are important. 00:12:09.680 --> 00:12:11.000 Maybe it’s just me, but 00:12:11.000 --> 00:12:14.000 I don’t think we  should have a country that sees America 00:12:14.000 --> 00:12:19.920 as its enemy making everything from  our children’s toys to our medicines. 00:12:19.920 --> 00:12:21.311 But you know what they don’t make? 00:12:21.311 --> 00:12:24.911 Our toilet paper. USA number…2!!! 00:12:28.240 --> 00:12:29.616 And if you liked this episode, 00:12:29.616 --> 00:12:32.960 remember  to subscribe to our free weekly newsletter 00:12:32.960 --> 00:12:34.571 so you can see all of our episodes, 00:12:34.571 --> 00:12:36.409 even when  YouTube doesn’t want you to. 00:12:36.409 --> 00:12:38.240 The link is below. 00:12:38.240 --> 00:12:41.120 Thanks for watching.
