WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:03.530 Even if you don’t understand, you can still support and stand by us. 00:00:03.530 --> 00:00:06.708 Our identity is still real and valid. 00:00:07.114 --> 00:00:08.994 [Non-binary Stories] 00:00:09.060 --> 00:00:10.670 My name is Cami, I’m 22 00:00:10.670 --> 00:00:13.090 And I’m here to talk about my non-binary identity. 00:00:13.090 --> 00:00:17.230 Non-binary is an umbrella term for any gender identity 00:00:17.230 --> 00:00:20.730 that isn’t exclusively masculine or exclusively feminine. 00:00:20.730 --> 00:00:22.260 That could be agender 00:00:22.270 --> 00:00:24.730 “a” indicating the absence of gender 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 which is neutral 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Or it could be a fluid identity. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If we imagine gender as a spectrum 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 with two poles: masculine and feminine 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 A fluid identity might move around that spectrum. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This includes people who are gender fluid, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 demigender, pangender, etc. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I never really identified with femininity. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 At 18, I was already questioning my gender identity 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and I met a trans man who I dated for a while. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Together, we put my identity into words: non-binary. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I think that because he was much more informed than me 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He was able to help me find the words to describe my identity 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Gender identity is who you are. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It’s the gender you feel, that you live, that you experience. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And gender expression is what you present to the world. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It’s the way you express your identity. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 For example, you could have a masculine gender identity: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So you’re a man, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And your gender expression could be feminine, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Meaning it has lots of markers that society thinks of as feminine. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 For example, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Which I came out to my parents as non-binary, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I also told them that I wanted to change my name. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It was two years ago, when I was 20. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 My mom took it very well. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 She was already well versed in gender identity 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 She’d done enough unlearning. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I felt safe with her. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Telling my dad was a bit trickier. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It took me longer to talk to him, and I didn’t do it in person. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I sent him a message because it was easier for me to manage. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He reacted quite well. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He said he didn’t understand everything but that he supported me no matter what, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that it didn’t change anything for him, and that he loved me just the same. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It was harder for my grandmother because it was very foreign to her. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 She grew up in the countryside before moving to Paris. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 She lived with my grandfather for 50 years. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 She lived in a very cisheteronormative environment 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 where she never questioned her gender identity or anyone else's. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 When I told her, she was a bit out of her depth. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But she always made sure to interact with me 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in the best way she could. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 She tries really hard. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And she almost always uses my chosen name now. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I applied for a legal name change in 2019. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I applied to the town council where I was living at the time. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I sent in a folder that I filled with statements from friends and family 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 confirming that they used the name Cami to refer to me. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I asked my school for a letter of support. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Then I submitted my application. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I waited a few months. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Wait times vary by municipality. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And my name change was approved. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Misgendering someone 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is using the wrong pronouns to refer to someone. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So for a non-binary person 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 who explicitly asked you to use "they/them" pronouns 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 misgendering them would be using feminine or masculine pronouns for them.
