>[MAN] This is the Van Veen grab.

It's a surface sediment sampler
designed for taking samples

on lake and riverbeds and large sumps.

It's a stainless steel construction.

This is a 1/2-liter model.

They also come in 2, 6, and 12 liters.

And the way it works is not
dissimilar from a mousetrap.

We can just set it with this lever here.

And now we can lift the whole unit and
we can lower it through a body of water

And then, as it touches the lakebed,

it releases,

and then we can lift up again...

and we get a nice, surface sample

and now we can pull it back
to the water's surface.
