WEBVTT 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Okay. So this will be our tutorial about using text wraps, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 hyphenation, spell check, and transform. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So when we're thinking of image and text, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we have some really cool options in InDesign 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to allow them to work together, that saves you some time. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We're thinking always of being the most efficient. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Once you have your techniques, you want to think about expediting your process 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so that you can make work um, as efficiently as possible. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So let's start with thinking about text wrap. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So a text wrap is when you're thinking about the interaction of text, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so here is my text frame, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and image, so here's my image frame. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Of course, we know that our image frame, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 here I can see the image is actually quite large 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 with this yellow orange kind of bounding box. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That tells me that the image is really big, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but of course, it's inside a frame 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and if I want to use the content grabber to edit, I can. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So that is a big image, but it's kind of isolated to this page 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and I have my text. So the way to think about using text 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and um, text wrap, is a consideration of how you want the text to flow 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 around any particular image. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now in this rectangular case, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it's pretty easy to just kind of line up my text frame 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to be in a position where it feels like it's flowing around the image. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But these two objects aren't really connected together. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So another more interesting way 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is to think about using text wrap, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the way I'm going to show it to you 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is by changing the shape of this. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You really get an idea of how it works. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So the first thing I'm going to do is 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I'm just going to make this a non rectangular image, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so I'm going to change the frame. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And I'm going to do that, make sure you're not clicked on anything. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I'm going to grab my direct selection tool 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because I just want to edit this one little corner. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So I've clicked on that corner and I'm going to shift it over. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So I'm just going to kind of create you know, some sort of a diagonal. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This will just reveal the text wrap to you, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 more so than if it was rectangular. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's also kind of a nice design. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So now, the trick with thinking about text wrap 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is it's something that you actually apply 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to the image, not to the text. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That's the one little conceptual trick here uh, that's kind of hard to remember. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So, here's my text. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Let's imagine I'm going to kind of let it wrap around the edge of the image, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 both with my title and with the actual kind of information here. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So I'm going to click on the actual image 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 using my regular selection tool, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because remember, that grabs the bounding box. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And then, you'll see an opportunity 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 inside your Properties panel down here called Text Wrap. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now again, really important. If you're using your other selection tool, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 oh, actually using the other one brings it up too, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so if for some reason you didn't see it though, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I just always kind of default to my regular selection tool. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Click on the image. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And then you'll see your text wrap. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So, first opportunity here is no text wrap, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so that's what it's currently set at. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You can see it's a little bit darker. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Here, if we wrap around the bounding box, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 remembering that I changed the bounding box, look what happens. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It has shifted my text to kind of match this angle right here. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Oops, I just zoomed in on the actual image 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 instead of the frame, there you go. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So now it's done that, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 if I want to use some offsets, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 which in this case is just one offset to kind of space it out, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I could always increase some spacing. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Oops, Command Z, let me get back here a little bit. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Use some spacing on this image to kind of bump this around. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So I'm going to click off and just zoom myself out a little bit. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So again, I'm on the image. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If I apply a text wrap, I'm going to go back in time here. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There's my text wrap, which is a wrap around bounding box. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If I need to increase the spacing then I'm going to use an offset. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So this is an offset number. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It'll usually limit you to just doing 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 whatever one works for that particular bounding or text wrap, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 which in this case is a top offset, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but it's sort of shifting things left to right. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now notice what's happening with also the title of this kind of article. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It is getting overset. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I'm kind of missing out on some of my text with this little red thing. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So of course, I can increase the size of this text frame so that it also works, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but it's shifting this according to the text wrap. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So that is a text wrap with a bounding box. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Very interesting, clever way-- the, of working with text and image. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The other thing you can do, you don't necessarily have 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to have it working with an image. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You can use text wrap with any object. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So here's another object. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is something I drew really quickly 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and I actually just used the pen tool. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Here we go, you're familiar with the pen tool. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You can use the pen tool in InDesign. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You can also use it in Illustrator. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If you're drawing something more complex, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 then of course you can place your object inside InDesign. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So here, I have some text and this kind of custom shape. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Let's imagine it's a poorly drawn guitar of some sort. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Uh, let's think about the kind of text wrap 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we could do with these two objects. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So I am again, make sure you don't have anything selected. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Get your black arrow selection tool, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 go to the object itself 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to determine what kind of text wrap you want. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Here's the one we did before around the bounding box. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Remember, this is actually in a bounding box that's square. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So that's not going to help us at all. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 What I want us to think about instead 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is wrapping around the object that I've drawn. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So if I use wrap around object, look what's happened. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now I have this lovely little flow 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 around the side of the object. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Of course, if I move my text frame around, it's going to keep flowing 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the positioning of the text will flow around that object. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If I change the size of the object, of course, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it's just going to keep flowing. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now, other opportunity is maybe 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we don't want to be on the outside of this object. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Perhaps we want to be on the inside of the object. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In that case, you have an invert button here. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So if I invert and also make sure I grab my text, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so I'm going to use my black arrow. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I'm going to move the text so that it's actually 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in the space of the object. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And perhaps I need to make my text frame a little bit wider. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Bring it in a little bit here. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And I'm, that top line looks like it's, there we go. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Bring that down a little bit. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So now I have done a text wrap 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 around an object and inverted it 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so that it's actually inside the object. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So that is wrap around object shape, invert. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You also have um, jump object, jump to next column. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Those are a little bit more if you're uh, doing column based design work. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I think the most useful for you currently 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is the wrap around bounding box or wrap around object shape, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 thinking about how to invert it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Again, if you don't want to do it, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 then you can always just go back to this no text wrap 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and now you're back to the basics where they aren't interacting together. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So those are your text wrap options, very fun. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Uh, the other thing I want to show you 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is to just pay attention to what is hyphenated. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If you're writing out a lot of text 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and you're breaking on a line, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it's going to create a hyphenation, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so here's a hyphen, here's a hyphen, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 here's a hyphen, here's a hyphen. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Sometimes that's a really kind of annoying thing 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 when you're a viewer or a reader. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Just seeing a bunch of hyphens along the edge is kind of a bad design. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It can get kind of um, irritating on your eyes. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So if you want to turn that off, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I recommend turning that off and it's just a really simple setting. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If you scroll down in your Properties panel, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you have to be on a text frame 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because otherwise it won't have all the opportunities, but scroll down. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Under this paragraph right here where you have paragraph options, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you know, you've got center, justification, etc., 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we have a hyphenate button. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So I like to turn that off and it's just going to move the words down 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 rather than hyphenate, hyphenate, hyphenate all the time. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That's hyphenation. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The other thing I want you to pay attention to is your spelling. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There is nothing worse than looking at a beautiful design 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that has a bunch of spelling errors, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because they become these little kind of 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 just nuisances to your brain. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So, you can, of course, check your spelling in a word document. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Particularly if you have a lot of text, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 use that kind of word document program, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 whatever it might be, to check your spelling. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Or if you're just going to type into InDesign, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we do have a spellcheck feature. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So grab your text frame. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Actually you don't even
