Why is there a "b" in doubt? - Gina Cooke
-
0:16 - 0:19People often think the word "doubt" spelling is a little crazy
-
0:19 - 0:21because of the letter "b".
-
0:21 - 0:22Since it doesn't spell a sound,
-
0:22 - 0:25most folks can't figure out what it's doing there.
-
0:25 - 0:28But in spite of what most of us learn in school,
-
0:28 - 0:30sound is never the most important aspect
-
0:30 - 0:32of spelling an English word.
-
0:32 - 0:36A word's meaning and history need to come first.
-
0:36 - 0:38To doubt means to question,
-
0:38 - 0:39to waver,
-
0:39 - 0:40to hesitate.
-
0:40 - 0:44As a noun, it means uncertainty or confusion.
-
0:44 - 0:46The present-day English word "doubt"
-
0:46 - 0:50started as a Latin word, "dubitare".
-
0:50 - 0:52It first moved from Latin into French
-
0:52 - 0:56where it lost both its "buh" sound and its letter "b".
-
0:56 - 0:59And then it came into English in the 13th century.
-
0:59 - 1:01About 100 years later,
-
1:01 - 1:05scribes who wrote English but also knew Latin,
-
1:05 - 1:09started to reinsert the "b" into the word's spelling,
-
1:09 - 1:13even though no one pronounced it that way.
-
1:13 - 1:14But why would they do this?
-
1:14 - 1:16Why would anyone in their right mind
-
1:16 - 1:19reinsert a silent letter into a spelling?
-
1:19 - 1:21Well, because they knew Latin,
-
1:21 - 1:27the scribes understood that the root of "doubt" had a "b" in it.
-
1:27 - 1:30Over time, even as fewer literate people knew Latin,
-
1:30 - 1:33the "b" was kept because it marked important,
-
1:33 - 1:35meaningful connections to other related words,
-
1:35 - 1:38like "dubious" and "indubitalbly,"
-
1:38 - 1:40which were subsequently borrowed into English
-
1:40 - 1:44from the same Latin root, "dubitare".
-
1:44 - 1:46Understanding these historical connections
-
1:46 - 1:48not only helped us to spell "doubt,"
-
1:48 - 1:50but also to understand the meaning
-
1:50 - 1:53of these more sophisticated words.
-
1:53 - 1:55But the story doesn't end there.
-
1:55 - 1:56If we look even deeper,
-
1:56 - 1:59we can see beyond the shadow of a doubt,
-
1:59 - 2:03just how revealing that "b" can be.
-
2:03 - 2:06There are only two base words in all of English
-
2:06 - 2:09that have the letters "d-o-u-b":
-
2:09 - 2:11one is doubt,
-
2:11 - 2:13and the other is double.
-
2:13 - 2:14We can build lots of other words
-
2:14 - 2:16on each of these bases,
-
2:16 - 2:17like doubtful
-
2:17 - 2:18and doubtless,
-
2:18 - 2:20or doublet,
-
2:20 - 2:21and redouble,
-
2:21 - 2:22and doubloon.
-
2:22 - 2:25It turns out that if we look into their history,
-
2:25 - 2:27we can see that they both derive
-
2:27 - 2:29from the same Latin forms.
-
2:29 - 2:31The meaning of double,
-
2:31 - 2:32two,
-
2:32 - 2:36is reflected in a deep understanding of doubt.
-
2:36 - 2:37See, when we doubt,
-
2:37 - 2:39when we hesitate,
-
2:39 - 2:41we second guess ourselves.
-
2:41 - 2:44When we have doubts about something,
-
2:44 - 2:46when we have questions or confusion,
-
2:46 - 2:49we are of two minds.
-
2:49 - 2:52Historically, before English began
-
2:52 - 2:53to borrow words from French,
-
2:53 - 2:56it already had a word for doubt.
-
2:56 - 2:59That Old English word was "tweogan,"
-
2:59 - 3:02a word whose relationship to "two"
-
3:02 - 3:05is clear in its spelling as well.
-
3:05 - 3:07So the next time you are in doubt
-
3:07 - 3:09about why English spelling works the way it does,
-
3:09 - 3:11take a second look.
-
3:11 - 3:16What you find just might make you do a double-take.
