Yanis Varoufakis: They printed €6 trillion and gave it to the bankers

  • 0:00 - 0:03
The reason why your social services
    are diminishing and so on
  • 0:03 - 0:06
is this process of austerity for the many
  • 0:06 - 0:10
    and socialism in inverted commas
    for the very few.
  • 0:10 - 0:14
    They printed 6 trillion euros
    to give to the bankers.
  • 0:14 - 0:17
The bankers gave it to the big buisiness,
    who did not invest it.
  • 0:17 - 0:18
Why did they not invest it?
  • 0:18 - 0:20
Because they looked at all of us,
    around Europe
  • 0:20 - 0:22
and said 'these people don't have money,
  • 0:22 - 0:25
as if we're going to invest in products
    that they can't afford.
  • 0:25 - 0:28
    So what did they do
    with this 6 trillion euros?
  • 0:28 - 0:31
They went to the stock exchange
    and bought their own shares.
  • 0:31 - 0:33
    Their shares went up,
    they didn't invest anything.
  • 0:33 - 0:35
And you know what? Guess what?
  • 0:35 - 0:37
Europe for 15 years has not invested.
  • 0:37 - 0:40
    In anything.
    Zero net investment in Europe.
  • 0:40 - 0:43
    This has never happened
in the history of the universe,
  • 0:43 - 0:44
    not the world.
  • 0:44 - 0:47
To have such a rich continent,
with all these savings and money
  • 0:48 - 0:50
    and profits, and real estate,
    not investing.
  • 0:51 - 0:53
    But the Chinese
    and the Americans invested.
  • 0:53 - 0:56
    In green technologies,
in what I call cloud capital,
  • 0:56 - 0:58
    algorithms, AI and all that.
  • 0:58 - 1:02
    And you know what?
    We've become the stupid continent.
  • 1:02 - 1:06
    We missed out on one
    whole technological revolution
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    after all these 15 years,
  • 1:08 - 1:12
    a steady process
    of secular stagnation.
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    This is not a crisis
that will go down and then will go up.
  • 1:14 - 1:19
For the next 50 years we are condemned
    to stagnate as a continent.
  • 1:19 - 1:20
    When a continent like Europe,
  • 1:20 - 1:23
which is so powerful and so rich,
    stagnates,
  • 1:23 - 1:26
    what happens is
    the politics starts fragmenting.
  • 1:26 - 1:30
So the reason why we are so complacent,
  • 1:30 - 1:34
the reason why the far right
    is rising everywhere, universally...
  • 1:34 - 1:37
    The left, the center left,
    was purging itself
  • 1:37 - 1:42
trying to adapt to the center, which
was shifting increasingly to the right,
  • 1:42 - 1:46
being pushed by those who genuinely
looked at people in the eye and said:
  • 1:46 - 1:48
    'I feel your pain'.
  • 1:48 - 1:51
    'I feel your pain,
you've never had it so bad'.
  • 1:51 - 1:54
'Your children are going to have
a far worse life than you did'.
  • 1:54 - 1:57
'I feel your pain, give me the power
and I'll make you great again'.
  • 1:57 - 2:00
And those were the fascists back then
and they are the fascists today.
  • 2:00 - 2:04
    In this context, a Europe
    that is politically fragmented,
  • 2:04 - 2:08
    it is becoming a vassal
    of the powers that be.
  • 2:08 - 2:15
In this case, W DC cannot do anything
to oppose the never ending war in Ukraine,
  • 2:15 - 2:18
    cannot do anything to oppose
    its own secular stagnation
  • 2:18 - 2:25
    and when Netanyahu, along with
Genocide Joe Biden, places a whole people,
  • 2:25 - 2:30
the people of Gaza, on death row,
the Europeans, they look like a dog
  • 2:30 - 2:33
that doesn't understand what it is
that you are saying to it.
  • 2:33 - 2:37
    You have, Ursula Von Derlyen,
she projects the flag of Israel on the buildings
  • 2:37 - 2:39
    and at the same time
  • 2:39 - 2:44
in the context of explaining why Europe is
    utterly commited to International Law
  • 2:44 - 2:47
she has to explain why she is not
    going to abide by
  • 2:47 - 2:52
    the international criminal courts
    decision to indicte Netanyahu.
