Last time we left off with Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation and how that was his new strategy to win the Civil War and save the Union. This time we see if it worked.
If you're interested in Shelby Foote's magisterial three-volume account of the Civil War you can find it here:
Volume 1: https://goo.gl/FCHgDu
Volume 2: https://goo.gl/UG71Dc
Volume 3: https://goo.gl/MQhPibAlso we'll visit the battles of Antietam, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, and Port Huron. President of the Confederate States of America Jefferson Davis could have clinched victory in the Civil War, but the tide turned in Lincoln's favor.
We also consider exactly what the Emancipation Proclamation did and did not do. It freed the slaves in the South, but it did not free the salves in the border states. But all of this was in line with Lincoln's purpose to save the Union.
We also see how Lincoln almost lost the election of 1864, but still squeaked into the presidency. And then the Civil War came to a grinding halt when Lee and Grant met at the Appomattox Courthouse and signed a peace agreement.
And as he was enjoying the fruits of peace, Lincoln was assassinated by a fierce proslavery activist named John Wilkes Booth.
