02 SB1 The Importance of Establishing Routines

  • Not Synced
Constant reminders of procedure and um,
  • Not Synced
routine, especially early on in the school year,
  • Not Synced
    helps a lot of practice
  • Not Synced
    because kids are just kids
  • Not Synced
    and they make mistakes
  • Not Synced
    and they have good intentions.
  • Not Synced
But if you give them constant practice and reminders
  • Not Synced
    and positive re-direction
  • Not Synced
it starts to become part of their working memory,
  • Not Synced
and it starts to become second nature.
  • Not Synced
When they walk into the classroom
  • Not Synced
they know "I'm in Ms. Reese's classroom.
  • Not Synced
Now I know I'm a student and how I'm working".
  • Not Synced
[Ms. Reese to class] I need all eyes up here. Class class!
  • Not Synced
    [students murmur response]
  • Not Synced
Dylan, please can I see your beautiful face?
  • Not Synced
    There you go.
  • Not Synced
Who else am I looking for? Roxana?
  • Not Synced
    Positive attention to yourself
  • Not Synced
    and to others. Thank you.
  • Not Synced
What does it look like to be on task?
  • Not Synced
What does it feel like for me
  • Not Synced
and how do I interact positively with other students?
  • Not Synced
    But ...
  • Not Synced
I make sure that I pushed out in the beginning of the school year--
  • Not Synced
I spend the first two weeks just teaching that.
  • Not Synced
And that saves me a lot of time.
  • Not Synced
It saves them a lot of time too
  • Not Synced
because they learn and they practice
  • Not Synced
how they should be in the classroom environment.
  • Not Synced
[Prof. Kelly] Every day students -- I will greet them at the door.
  • Not Synced
And I'll give them a handshake or a fist bump.
  • Not Synced
And then at 7:30 it's time for class to start.
  • Not Synced
So I appoint a girl on an A-day
  • Not Synced
and a boy on a B-day to lead the honor.
  • Not Synced
[student] ? after me, good morning Professor Kelly.
  • Not Synced
    [students] Good morning Professor Kelly.
  • Not Synced
[Prof. Kelly] That's just something that the culture of the school
  • Not Synced
    has really provided,
  • Not Synced
and then we're pretty much off to the races after that.
  • Not Synced
So I try to keep it as tight as possible,
  • Not Synced
but still as consistent as possible.
  • Not Synced
One of the great things about working at this school
  • Not Synced
is that so much of the procdures
  • Not Synced
    were handed to us
  • Not Synced
    by director and by leadership.
  • Not Synced
Things like "honoring" and, you know,
  • Not Synced
    bathroom passes in a planner
  • Not Synced
seemed a little foreign at first,
  • Not Synced
but they quickly understood that it's such a common language,
  • Not Synced
especially by the time you have seniors
  • Not Synced
it is like, you save so much time
  • Not Synced
cause there is no question about
  • Not Synced
"How are we gonna start the day?"
  • Not Synced
How do you know when class has actually begun?
  • Not Synced
So I'm a big believer in procedures.
  • Not Synced
[Mr. Chung] Isa, can you please honor us this morning?
  • Not Synced
    [Isa] Okay.
  • Not Synced
    Class, please check uniform.
  • Not Synced
    Uniform check.
  • Not Synced
    [students] Yes, sir.
  • Not Synced
[Isa] Please face Mr. Chung with a smile
  • Not Synced
and enthusiasm and repeat after me:
  • Not Synced
    Good morning Mr. Chung.
  • Not Synced
    [students] Good morning Mr. Chung.
  • Not Synced
    [Mr. Chung] Good morning class.
  • Not Synced
    Please be seated.
  • Not Synced
Let's take a look up here.
  • Not Synced
What is our prelude going to be?
  • Not Synced
    Okay? Just think about it.
  • Not Synced
    And do it.
  • Not Synced
    Pencil out and ready.
  • Not Synced
    All you've gotta do.
  • Not Synced
In terms of rules in the classroom,
  • Not Synced
what I appreciate about this school at least
  • Not Synced
is the fact that there's a schoolwide culture
  • Not Synced
    instead of rules
  • Not Synced
    that the kids are taught,
  • Not Synced
that they're expected to know and to live out
  • Not Synced
    here at this school.
  • Not Synced
So whether it's this class or the class next door,
  • Not Synced
    there is this universal understanding
  • Not Synced
    and expectation for them to
  • Not Synced
    make eye contact.
  • Not Synced
For them to respond with "Yes, sir / No, ma'am".
  • Not Synced
    For them to compliment others,
  • Not Synced
    respect others
  • Not Synced
    and such.
  • Not Synced
So I'm thankful that there is a schoolwide understanding
  • Not Synced
and culture of what's expected of all the students
  • Not Synced
because of that fact that if it's contained
  • Not Synced
to different classrooms there could be
  • Not Synced
    different expectations.
  • Not Synced
I think respect comes before trust.
  • Not Synced
So when you start out the year,
  • Not Synced
    there's this,
  • Not Synced
    there's this mutual respect,
  • Not Synced
and not only in our actions,
  • Not Synced
but in our words as well.
  • Not Synced
And students will start to respect us
  • Not Synced
and we'll start to respect the class.
  • Not Synced
And once we start to build that connection,
  • Not Synced
    then there's trust.
  • Not Synced
And not only a personal trust,
  • Not Synced
    but an academic trust.
  • Not Synced
    So we start to know
  • Not Synced
if we have a group of students
  • Not Synced
and we give them an assignment
  • Not Synced
and we ask them to sit over here,
  • Not Synced
they're probably gonna be working on that assignment.
  • Not Synced
We don't have to helicopter over them.
  • Not Synced
    And that comes with time.
  • Not Synced
And that comes with what we do
  • Not Synced
as well as what we say.
  • Not Synced
    All right.
  • Not Synced
We are getting ready for objectives.
  • Not Synced
    You have twenty-three seconds.
  • Not Synced
You should be ready to go.
  • Not Synced
All I should see out in front of you
  • Not Synced
is your notebook and a pencil.
  • Not Synced
You can have your Chromebooks handy too
  • Not Synced
if you want to follow along.
  • Not Synced
    That's fantastic.
  • Not Synced
I found that in just my years here
  • Not Synced
that when I don't have a procedure in place
  • Not Synced
    that's when problems might arise.
  • Not Synced
Because the fact of the matter is
  • Not Synced
    there is safety in procedures.
  • Not Synced
And safety is the number one priority in my classroom
  • Not Synced
both physical safety and emotional safety.
