-
(speaker) Well, hello again.
-
This is Greg, and I'd like to show you
in this short tutorial
-
how you can access
Virtual Stock Exchange
-
from our D2L website.
-
Now, Virtual Stock Exchange
is the website we'll be using
-
to build your stock portfolios
-
and to see
how your $100,000 performs
-
over the next eight weeks or so.
-
To access Virtual Stock Exchange
and to complete this assignment,
-
we'll click
on the "Assignments" tab
-
up on the toolbar
-
and that will then allow us
to click on this,
-
the Chapter 16:
Initial Stock Portfolio Assignment
-
with 10 points.
-
So I'll click on this,
-
and then you can read
through the instructions here.
-
They're quite long,
but please read through these carefully.
-
It'll provide some good
background information.
-
And once you've read through this,
the next step then
-
is to actually go
to Virtual Stock Exchange.
-
And what I found the best way
to do that is,
-
is simply highlight this URL--
this website.
-
I'm going to...
-
copy that.
-
I'm going to open up a new tab...
-
and...
-
go to that site.
-
So this takes me
to the Virtual Stock Exchange site,
-
and this happens to be...
-
our class competition.
-
And your class competition
might read a little bit differently,
-
depending on the term,
-
but we want to do now
is we want to join this game.
-
So we're going to join
by clicking here, "Join Now."
-
And, now, if this is your first time--
which I assume it will be--
-
to use this site,
you will need to register.
-
So you can register
by clicking here,
-
up here, "Register,"
-
and fill out some
of this information.
-
Please be sure
to write down your-- your password,
-
and so you can re-access the site.
-
Once you've done this,
-
then you can join
the class competition.
-
Okay, once you've successfully
registered for the game
-
and you're
in your class competition,
-
the next thing you'll want to do
is make a trade,
-
which is taking your cash,
your $100,000,
-
and buying stocks with that.
-
So to do that,
we will click on "Trade Now,"
-
this button down here,
-
and you're given a list
of companies
-
in the news here
-
that you could buy,
-
or you can type
in the "ticker" symbol.
-
And again, the "ticker" symbol
-
is the three
or four letter abbreviation
-
for the company's stock.
-
And you might need
to do a Google search
-
to find up the--
find out the ticker symbol for the firm
-
that you're interested in.
-
Let's say I want to invest in Cabela's,
sporting goods store.
-
So, and I know the ticker symbol
is C-A-B for Cabela's.
-
I'll type in C-A-B, type search,
-
and here it is,
Cabela's Incorporated.
-
And I can see the current stock price
is $63.38 down here.
-
Okay, so to buy stock in Cabela's
with this platform,
-
what I simply do
is drag it over here,
-
drop it in here,
-
and then,
with this tool down here,
-
just indicate how much stock
I want to buy.
-
Here's 476 shares
-
and so forth.
-
Five hundred twelve shares,
and that will cost me about $45,000.
-
So I'm going to
up that a little bit,
-
use most of my $100,000.
-
So I'm going to buy 788 shares
-
at $63 a share.
-
So I'll click "Submit Trade."
-
And let's see what happens.
-
"Your order
was submitted successfully."
-
Okay. So that order is
in process now
-
and will be executed
as soon as it's able to.
-
Now, I will note
if you trade in off hours,
-
if it's night,
during the weekends,
-
your trades may not go through
-
until the markets actually open
on Monday morning.
-
And the markets generally open
on East Coast time
-
from 8:30 until 4:30,
East Coast time.
-
So, in short,
that's how you make trades
-
at Virtual Stock Exchange.
