-
Those of us who might
-
be defined as like
-
not as privileged as Jimmy Kimmel,
-
but not somebody who
-
could be rounded up by ICE,
-
we’re being encouraged
-
to just sort of like,
-
“It’ll be fine.”
-
We’re going to be—
-
we’re being encouraged
-
just put our heads down
-
and just sort of hope that, like,
-
they won’t keep squeezing that
-
until—but eventually,
-
but that’s how it always works:
-
They keep squeezing it
-
until they get to the rest of us.
-
And so I think this is right now.
-
It’s weird to think of, like,
-
Jimmy Kimmel
-
and Stephen Colbert
-
as, like, the
-
canaries in the coal mine.
-
But if they’re telling us,
-
“We’re not afraid of
-
rich white men,”
-
what can the rest of us do?
-
What can we expect them
-
to treat the rest of us
-
if we say the wrong thing
-
on social media,
-
or if we make the wrong joke
-
in front of the wrong person?
-
How can we expect that
-
we’re going
-
to get through the day, every day,
-
and be able to live our lives
-
the way we want to,
-
if they’re not afraid
-
of going after
-
the rich white guys?
