Utah 4 H Horse Portfolio Training

  • 0:01 - 0:05
okay hi everybody thank you so much for
  • 0:03 - 0:07
watching this 4 portfolio training my
  • 0:05 - 0:08
name is Kelsey Romney I'm from the state
  • 0:07 - 0:11
4 office and I'm excited to be here
  • 0:08 - 0:12
tonight with Jesse and Megan uh we're
  • 0:11 - 0:15
going to talk a little bit about what
  • 0:12 - 0:18
the 4 portfolio is and how it applies to
  • 0:15 - 0:20
you in the 4 horse program so first of
  • 0:18 - 0:24
all the 4 portfolio is a combination of
  • 0:20 - 0:26
a resume and a cover letter and the
  • 0:24 - 0:28
reason that we do 4 portfolios is for a
  • 0:26 - 0:30
number of reasons but from a 4
  • 0:28 - 0:32
    perspective it is the standard
  • 0:30 - 0:35
    application tool for all leadership
  • 0:32 - 0:38
    activities it leads to National
  • 0:35 - 0:41
opportunities it we have often County
  • 0:38 - 0:43
Awards nights and portfolio contests we
  • 0:41 - 0:45
have this is the first application that
  • 0:43 - 0:48
you need to complete in order to become
  • 0:45 - 0:51
a for state ambassador and we have the
  • 0:48 - 0:53
state for each portfolio contest as well
  • 0:51 - 0:55
from a practical application for each
  • 0:53 - 0:56
portfolios are teaching you how to write
  • 0:55 - 0:58
a resume and cover letter which are
  • 0:56 - 1:01
going to be extremely useful for your
  • 0:58 - 1:03
future The Things Are most important for
  • 1:01 - 1:06
you that this will apply to is the job
  • 1:03 - 1:08
    applications college applications
  • 1:06 - 1:11
    scholarship applications and Leadership
  • 1:08 - 1:13
positions Beyond 4 so as you can see
  • 1:11 - 1:15
here with these graphs it's really
  • 1:13 - 1:17
important to see that 4ers are already
  • 1:15 - 1:20
reporting that they will use this tool
  • 1:17 - 1:23
for their future 98% that they reported
  • 1:20 - 1:26
that they will use their for portfolio
  • 1:23 - 1:28
to apply for jobs 96% said that they'll
  • 1:26 - 1:30
use these skills to apply for
  • 1:28 - 1:32
scholarships 81% said that they'll use
  • 1:30 - 1:34
these skills to apply for leadership
  • 1:32 - 1:37
positions and 93% said that they will
  • 1:34 - 1:38
use these skills to apply for college so
  • 1:37 - 1:40
we're hoping that what you're learning
  • 1:38 - 1:42
today is going to be extremely useful
  • 1:40 - 1:44
    for you moving
  • 1:42 - 1:48
forward okay so let's talk a little bit
  • 1:44 - 1:50
about what the 4 portfolio actually is
  • 1:48 - 1:51
and the first part is we're going to
  • 1:50 - 1:54
kind of work in Reverse we're going to
  • 1:51 - 1:57
talk about the 4 resume first the resum
  • 1:54 - 1:59
is a cumulative summary of your
  • 1:57 - 2:01
experience in 4 and your background so
  • 1:59 - 2:04
just like you would tailor a real resume
  • 2:01 - 2:07
to whatever job you're applying for the
  • 2:04 - 2:10
4 resume is should be tailored to your 4
  • 2:07 - 2:13
experience most of the whole content of
  • 2:10 - 2:15
the resume should be all about 4 there's
  • 2:13 - 2:17
one portion that we'll talk about on the
  • 2:15 - 2:19
rubrics later one portion is designated
  • 2:17 - 2:21
for your non-for experience so if you
  • 2:19 - 2:23
have anything really exciting that you
  • 2:21 - 2:25
want to throw into that section that's
  • 2:23 - 2:28
great but for the most part It's All 4
  • 2:25 - 2:30
stuff um the sections that we can talk
  • 2:28 - 2:32
about a little bit more specifically are
  • 2:30 - 2:35
    project involvement for each activities
  • 2:32 - 2:37
and experiences for each Awards and
  • 2:35 - 2:40
recognition for each leadership and for
  • 2:37 - 2:42
each community service it's important to
  • 2:40 - 2:44
notice that each one of these sections
  • 2:42 - 2:45
are actually worth different amounts so
  • 2:44 - 2:48
    they're weighted differently on your
  • 2:45 - 2:50
resume or on your rubric so if you want
  • 2:48 - 2:53
to score really high you want to put
  • 2:50 - 2:56
more content in the sections that are uh
  • 2:53 - 2:58
have more points associated with them
  • 2:56 - 3:00
and then each year you'll want to update
  • 2:58 - 3:03
your information and maintain Ain the
  • 3:00 - 3:05
most important pieces in the resume
  • 3:03 - 3:08
while maybe dropping some of the things
  • 3:05 - 3:09
that are less important to you um like
  • 3:08 - 3:11
we said at the beginning this is
  • 3:09 - 3:14
cumulative so you want to make this
  • 3:11 - 3:15
represent your whole experience just on
  • 3:14 - 3:17
    the two-page
  • 3:15 - 3:20
    maximum
  • 3:17 - 3:21
okay here are some sample resumés that
  • 3:20 - 3:23
we wanted to share with you the
  • 3:21 - 3:25
important part to notice is that you're
  • 3:23 - 3:28
welcome to use any template you can find
  • 3:25 - 3:30
or come up with your own we don't expect
  • 3:28 - 3:32
there to be a perfect standard of what
  • 3:30 - 3:34
they all look like it should look like
  • 3:32 - 3:36
you professionally on a piece of paper
  • 3:34 - 3:39
if you need help if you're not quite so
  • 3:36 - 3:41
graphically inclined then go ahead and
  • 3:39 - 3:44
check out any resumé rubric or template
  • 3:41 - 3:48
I should say that you can find in Google
  • 3:44 - 3:51
in uh on word on all different platforms
  • 3:48 - 3:52
there's a lot of of resumé templates out
  • 3:51 - 3:54
there and we have a couple that we can
  • 3:52 - 3:57
share with you as well we'll drop it in
  • 3:54 - 3:59
the description on this video um there
  • 3:57 - 4:01
are a few templates on Google Docs that
  • 3:59 - 4:02
you can click on and start filling out
  • 4:01 - 4:04
your forage experience just make sure to
  • 4:02 - 4:06
make it your own change the colors
  • 4:04 - 4:09
change the font change the content all
  • 4:06 - 4:11
those things so that it displays your
  • 4:09 - 4:12
experience these examples right here I
  • 4:11 - 4:14
hope you can see there's some major
  • 4:12 - 4:16
differences in the formatting some of
  • 4:14 - 4:19
them use more design some of them use
  • 4:16 - 4:21
different colors keep that in mind as
  • 4:19 - 4:24
    you make your own
  • 4:21 - 4:27
resume okay now let's talk a little bit
  • 4:24 - 4:28
more about the cover letter so the cover
  • 4:27 - 4:31
letter actually is the first part that
  • 4:28 - 4:33
an employer would read read when they're
  • 4:31 - 4:35
when you're applying for a job and the
  • 4:33 - 4:37
cover letter should be one page long
  • 4:35 - 4:39
    there's a standard format for a cover
  • 4:37 - 4:40
letter so if you haven't seen that or
  • 4:39 - 4:42
you aren't familiar with that make sure
  • 4:40 - 4:44
that you notice what that is before you
  • 4:42 - 4:47
start writing and it should be a
  • 4:44 - 4:49
narrative to accompany your resume so if
  • 4:47 - 4:51
you think about the resume as a bunch of
  • 4:49 - 4:53
bricks that you're laying about your
  • 4:51 - 4:55
experience the cover letter is kind of
  • 4:53 - 4:57
the cement that holds it all together so
  • 4:55 - 4:59
you want to be sure to explain things
  • 4:57 - 5:01
that are not already listed in your
  • 4:59 - 5:03
resume you want to talk about the skills
  • 5:01 - 5:05
    that you've acquired the experiences
  • 5:03 - 5:08
you've had those types of things it's
  • 5:05 - 5:10
your chance to explain what you've
  • 5:08 - 5:13
    listed on your
  • 5:10 - 5:14
resume so the other part of the the
  • 5:13 - 5:16
cover letter is that just like the
  • 5:14 - 5:19
resume it should be tailored to the
  • 5:16 - 5:21
application that you're applying for in
  • 5:19 - 5:24
4 we make this really easy because we
  • 5:21 - 5:25
list the objectives that we want you to
  • 5:24 - 5:29
State I'll show you these objectives
  • 5:25 - 5:32
right here for the horse project so it
  • 5:29 - 5:34
make it really easy for the judges and
  • 5:32 - 5:37
specifically address each one of these
  • 5:34 - 5:39
different objectives um as you can see
  • 5:37 - 5:41
there's four of them I would recommend
  • 5:39 - 5:44
    writing four paragraphs each paragraph
  • 5:41 - 5:46
addressing each objective so it's very
  • 5:44 - 5:48
simple for them to read and look at from
  • 5:46 - 5:50
a real world application when you go to
  • 5:48 - 5:52
apply for a job it's a little bit more
  • 5:50 - 5:54
difficult because they often don't list
  • 5:52 - 5:56
the objectives they're looking for in a
  • 5:54 - 5:58
candidate so it's up to you to read the
  • 5:56 - 6:01
job responsibilities and sift out those
  • 5:58 - 6:03
objectives and sift out which ones
  • 6:01 - 6:05
you're going to address but we want you
  • 6:03 - 6:08
to learn those skills here in 4 and
  • 6:05 - 6:10
practice um how to clearly communicate
  • 6:08 - 6:12
how your experience matches what those
  • 6:10 - 6:15
employers are looking for so that's what
  • 6:12 - 6:17
we're trying uh to help you learn by
  • 6:15 - 6:20
    writing a cover
  • 6:17 - 6:22
letter okay here's a cover letter
  • 6:20 - 6:26
example and you can see the formatting
  • 6:22 - 6:27
here this way as well some important
  • 6:26 - 6:28
tips to keep in mind when you're writing
  • 6:27 - 6:31
cover letter is that you want to
  • 6:28 - 6:33
    maintain a professional language so
  • 6:31 - 6:36
often people will use this to uh write
  • 6:33 - 6:38
kind of their for each story or maybe
  • 6:36 - 6:40
write it as uh it would sound like as a
  • 6:38 - 6:42
public speech and that's a different
  • 6:40 - 6:45
type of language so if you're just
  • 6:42 - 6:47
starting out uh do your best get help
  • 6:45 - 6:49
and always have someone review what you
  • 6:47 - 6:51
have written but if this is maybe your
  • 6:49 - 6:52
second or third or fourth time writing a
  • 6:51 - 6:55
cover letter make sure that you're
  • 6:52 - 6:57
elevating that content as best you can
  • 6:55 - 7:01
to summarize it into really professional
  • 6:57 - 7:03
language um you don't need to be miles
  • 7:01 - 7:05
and miles long this is on the long side
  • 7:03 - 7:07
this example that I'm showing you here
  • 7:05 - 7:09
this is a longer cover letter so just
  • 7:07 - 7:11
keep that in mind you have a onepage
  • 7:09 - 7:12
limit when you write the cover letter
  • 7:11 - 7:16
    for these
  • 7:12 - 7:18
contests and then um also just make sure
  • 7:16 - 7:20
that you include your signature at the
  • 7:18 - 7:23
bottom if it's a digital submission
  • 7:20 - 7:24
which all of our 4 contests probably are
  • 7:23 - 7:27
make sure that you check with your
  • 7:24 - 7:29
contest um but if it's a digital
  • 7:27 - 7:30
submission you can use a digital
  • 7:29 - 7:32
signature so don't worry about having to
  • 7:30 - 7:34
print out sign your document and
  • 7:32 - 7:36
re-upload it I know that can be kind of
  • 7:34 - 7:38
a headache but a digital signature is
  • 7:36 - 7:40
acceptable and then like I said before
  • 7:38 - 7:42
just make sure that you have someone
  • 7:40 - 7:44
else review it always always always no
  • 7:42 - 7:46
matter what you are applying for have
  • 7:44 - 7:48
someone review your cover letter because
  • 7:46 - 7:50
more the chances are high that you've
  • 7:48 - 7:52
made at least one error whether it's
  • 7:50 - 7:54
just a typo or a grammatical error or
  • 7:52 - 7:57
anything make sure you have someone
  • 7:54 - 7:59
review the content this is your chance
  • 7:57 - 8:01
to put your best foot forward in any
  • 7:59 - 8:03
scenario so whether you're applying for
  • 8:01 - 8:05
    a 4 contest or you're applying for a job
  • 8:03 - 8:07
or all those other opportunities that we
  • 8:05 - 8:09
talked about before make sure that
  • 8:07 - 8:11
you're making the best impression you
  • 8:09 - 8:13
can and this is your chance to do so so
  • 8:11 - 8:14
keep that in mind when you're writing
  • 8:13 - 8:16
    your cover
  • 8:14 - 8:18
letter okay I want to just talk to you
  • 8:16 - 8:21
quickly about the rubrics that we have
  • 8:18 - 8:23
so both the resume and the cover letter
  • 8:21 - 8:26
are out of a 100 points total if you
  • 8:23 - 8:28
receive a blue ribbon in total on both
  • 8:26 - 8:31
    documents combined that means that
  • 8:28 - 8:33
    whoever scored the your portfolio
  • 8:31 - 8:35
whatever judge looked at your portfolio
  • 8:33 - 8:37
would interview you for a position so
  • 8:35 - 8:38
that's the real world application for
  • 8:37 - 8:41
this and that's how you know you are on
  • 8:38 - 8:44
the right track um if you do a red you
  • 8:41 - 8:46
probably just forgot a section or you
  • 8:44 - 8:48
just need a little bit more help on some
  • 8:46 - 8:50
some so just keep working at it and if
  • 8:48 - 8:53
you receive a white that's okay it it
  • 8:50 - 8:55
just helps you set goals for the future
  • 8:53 - 8:57
and see helps you see where you can
  • 8:55 - 8:59
improve as our 4 modotto goes of course
  • 8:57 - 9:01
we're all about making the best better
  • 8:59 - 9:03
so whether e you're the best in the in
  • 9:01 - 9:05
the class or maybe you need a lot of
  • 9:03 - 9:07
    improvement everyone should be receiving
  • 9:05 - 9:10
feedback especially if you enter the
  • 9:07 - 9:11
state portfolio contest um but everyone
  • 9:10 - 9:13
will be receiving feedback from the
  • 9:11 - 9:15
judges on how you can do better so just
  • 9:13 - 9:18
    keep that in mind as
  • 9:15 - 9:20
well and that's the same thing for the
  • 9:18 - 9:23
uh rubric for the cover letter so now I
  • 9:20 - 9:26
just want to show you the link to this
  • 9:23 - 9:29
is the link to our portfolio page and
  • 9:26 - 9:33
this is what that page looks like on our
  • 9:29 - 9:34
home screen on Utah for.org so you can
  • 9:33 - 9:37
    see
  • 9:34 - 9:39
that we have this right here this is
  • 9:37 - 9:41
under more opportunities so if you go to
  • 9:39 - 9:43
our homepage on Utah 4 and then you
  • 9:41 - 9:45
scroll all the way to the bottom I'll
  • 9:43 - 9:48
show you right now scroll all the way to
  • 9:45 - 9:50
the bottom click more opportunities and
  • 9:48 - 9:53
portfolio that's the fastest way to get
  • 9:50 - 9:55
to this page and this has just more
  • 9:53 - 9:56
information for you if you need to read
  • 9:55 - 9:59
more about the fine print if you need
  • 9:56 - 10:01
more examples we have examples down here
  • 9:59 - 10:04
we have have a guide book all sorts of
  • 10:01 - 10:05
things that can help you and the rubrics
  • 10:04 - 10:07
so you can check those out the other
  • 10:05 - 10:10
important piece is the cover letter
  • 10:07 - 10:13
objectives so for you who are in the
  • 10:10 - 10:15
horse project you can click right here
  • 10:13 - 10:17
and it will show you these objectives
  • 10:15 - 10:19
again so you can access access those at
  • 10:17 - 10:22
any time and then if you're entering any
  • 10:19 - 10:23
other 4 portfolio contests just know
  • 10:22 - 10:26
that these are all right here and the
  • 10:23 - 10:28
objectives are unique for each contest
  • 10:26 - 10:30
so you want to make sure that you are
  • 10:28 - 10:31
looking those up every time time you
  • 10:30 - 10:34
    enter for each
  • 10:31 - 10:36
    contest for each portfolio
  • 10:34 - 10:40
    contest
  • 10:36 - 10:41
okay okay that's our page and um I just
  • 10:40 - 10:43
want to say thank you so much for
  • 10:41 - 10:45
watching this again and if you have any
  • 10:43 - 10:46
questions feel free to contact me or
  • 10:45 - 10:51
Jesse or Megan and we would be happy to
  • 10:46 - 10:51
    help you out thanks
