To Serve Man: Why Was This Classic Twilight Zone Episode Filmed Twice?

  • 0:02 - 0:04
based on a short story by damon knight
  • 0:04 - 0:06
and adapted for television by rod
  • 0:06 - 0:09
serling this twilight zone story is
  • 0:09 - 0:11
arguably one of the best and most
  • 0:11 - 0:14
remembered of the entire series and
  • 0:14 - 0:15
    that's saying something as rod
  • 0:15 - 0:17
sterling's the twilight zone is one of
  • 0:17 - 0:20
the most respected and probably the best
  • 0:20 - 0:23
    anthology series of all time
  • 0:23 - 0:25
    originally published in galaxy science
  • 0:25 - 0:29
fiction magazine in november of 1950 the
  • 0:29 - 0:31
short story to serve man differed
  • 0:31 - 0:34
somewhat from the tv adaptation but the
  • 0:34 - 0:36
    story was basically the same
  • 0:36 - 0:39
a race of alien beings lands on earth
  • 0:39 - 0:42
and offers to bring mankind the peace
  • 0:42 - 0:44
and plenty which they themselves enjoy
  • 0:44 - 0:46
and which they have in the past brought
  • 0:46 - 0:49
to other races throughout the galaxy in
  • 0:49 - 0:51
knight's short story the aliens or
  • 0:51 - 0:54
canimits as they're called are short
  • 0:54 - 0:56
    hairy pig-like creatures that walk
  • 0:56 - 0:58
upright but in the twilight zone episode
  • 0:58 - 1:00
there are nine foot tall giants with
  • 1:00 - 1:03
enormous heads and telepathic powers of
  • 1:03 - 1:05
    communication
  • 1:05 - 1:07
    it's great re-watching these classic
  • 1:07 - 1:10
twilight zone episodes as they are in my
  • 1:10 - 1:12
opinion much better than anything on
  • 1:12 - 1:14
television today the effects may be
  • 1:14 - 1:16
    dated but the stories and
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    characterizations are solid
  • 1:18 - 1:20
there are some minor plot holes but the
  • 1:20 - 1:22
writing and the dialogue are so good
  • 1:22 - 1:25
that they don't affect the basic story
  • 1:25 - 1:27
the story opens on board the canid
  • 1:27 - 1:30
spaceship in a framing sequence which
  • 1:30 - 1:32
was later added by rod serling
  • 1:32 - 1:35
the main character michael chambers is
  • 1:35 - 1:37
seen lying down smoking a cigarette
  • 1:37 - 1:39
while a voice on the intercom tells them
  • 1:39 - 1:42
it is the meal time kindly state your
  • 1:42 - 1:43
    preference
  • 1:43 - 1:45
chambers then narrates the scene as we
  • 1:45 - 1:47
flash back to the canaanite's first
  • 1:47 - 1:49
appearance on earth there's a shot of
  • 1:49 - 1:52
new york's times square and the united
  • 1:52 - 1:54
nations building and then a shot of a
  • 1:54 - 1:56
    ufo flying overhead
  • 1:56 - 1:59
it's footage taken from the 1951 film
  • 1:59 - 2:02
the day the earth stood still
  • 2:02 - 2:04
inside the u.n they announced that the
  • 2:04 - 2:06
    first official arrival of alien
  • 2:06 - 2:09
creatures from outer space has happened
  • 2:09 - 2:11
the air is filled with tension as the
  • 2:11 - 2:14
alien enters the building we don't
  • 2:14 - 2:16
actually see the alien in this scene
  • 2:16 - 2:19
just as tall shadow the shocked looks on
  • 2:19 - 2:21
the delegates faces and the back of the
  • 2:21 - 2:23
    alien's head
  • 2:23 - 2:25
after that we get the great rod searling
  • 2:25 - 2:27
monologue that brings us to the first
  • 2:27 - 2:28
    break
  • 2:28 - 2:31
    respectfully submitted for your perusal
  • 2:31 - 2:32
    academic
  • 2:32 - 2:34
height a little over nine feet weight in
  • 2:34 - 2:36
    the neighborhood of 350 pounds
  • 2:36 - 2:38
    origin unknown
  • 2:38 - 2:40
an intriguing story with a shocking
  • 2:40 - 2:43
twist ending the surf man had its share
  • 2:43 - 2:45
    of production problems
  • 2:45 - 2:47
there were two different versions that
  • 2:47 - 2:48
    were shot
  • 2:48 - 2:50
then the footage from both versions was
  • 2:50 - 2:52
combined to make the episode that we see
  • 2:52 - 2:53
    today
  • 2:53 - 2:56
richard kyle leader of james bond
  • 2:56 - 2:58
villain fame plays the nine foot tall
  • 2:58 - 3:01
canit that first addresses the u.n and
  • 3:01 - 3:03
then he plays every candidate that was
  • 3:03 - 3:05
    seen after that
  • 3:05 - 3:07
kyle was just over seven feet tall in
  • 3:07 - 3:09
real life and wore a large prosthetic
  • 3:09 - 3:11
appliance on his head to give the
  • 3:11 - 3:13
    appearance of a large brain
  • 3:13 - 3:16
and he also wore thick soled platform
  • 3:16 - 3:19
shoes to increase his height even more
  • 3:19 - 3:20
kyle was in the middle of filming the
  • 3:20 - 3:25
movie ego a 1962 indie horror film but
  • 3:25 - 3:27
director richard bear was able to shoot
  • 3:27 - 3:29
    around his filming schedule
  • 3:29 - 3:31
    pioneering makeup artist william tuttle
  • 3:31 - 3:33
who also did the makeup for the classic
  • 3:33 - 3:35
    twilight zone episodes nightmare at
  • 3:35 - 3:38
twenty thousand feet eye of the beholder
  • 3:38 - 3:40
and the masks also created the
  • 3:40 - 3:43
prosthetics used for the alien's head
  • 3:43 - 3:45
and it's still very creepy to look at
  • 3:45 - 3:47
when we come back from break we see that
  • 3:47 - 3:49
the canid is speaking but his mouth
  • 3:49 - 3:52
    isn't moving voicing instead through
  • 3:52 - 3:54
some sort of telepathy he says that they
  • 3:54 - 3:56
come in peace and friendship and that
  • 3:56 - 3:58
    their intentions are honorable
  • 3:58 - 4:00
they wish above all things to help the
  • 4:00 - 4:02
    people of earth
  • 4:02 - 4:05
they promised cheap unlimited energy an
  • 4:05 - 4:08
end to famine and an end to all wars
  • 4:08 - 4:11
they only ask us to trust them as they
  • 4:11 - 4:13
have no ulterior motives they just want
  • 4:13 - 4:15
    to help us
  • 4:15 - 4:17
after answering some questions from the
  • 4:17 - 4:19
delegates the candidate leaves behind a
  • 4:19 - 4:22
book written in their alien language
  • 4:22 - 4:24
we then see our main character michael
  • 4:24 - 4:27
    chambers a government cryptographer who
  • 4:27 - 4:29
was given the assignment of translating
  • 4:29 - 4:30
    the book
  • 4:30 - 4:32
people are naturally distrustful of the
  • 4:32 - 4:34
    candidate's intentions but are slowly
  • 4:34 - 4:36
persuaded to change their minds as the
  • 4:36 - 4:38
aliens begin to deliver on their
  • 4:38 - 4:41
promises to put an end to world hunger
  • 4:41 - 4:45
energy shortages and the arms race
  • 4:45 - 4:47
at this point patty a member of chambers
  • 4:47 - 4:49
team enters the room and happily
  • 4:49 - 4:51
announces that they've licked the book's
  • 4:51 - 4:54
title she presents a sheet of paper with
  • 4:54 - 4:56
the title printed in english to chambers
  • 4:56 - 4:58
and two representatives of the army who
  • 4:58 - 5:00
    are also there
  • 5:00 - 5:02
it's revealed that the title of the book
  • 5:02 - 5:03
    is to serve man
  • 5:03 - 5:05
and chamber seems to think that this
  • 5:05 - 5:08
proves the intention of the aliens
  • 5:08 - 5:10
the army reps are still skeptical but
  • 5:10 - 5:13
hopeful and chambers tells them that if
  • 5:13 - 5:15
true they'll all be out of a job
  • 5:15 - 5:17
we then switch to a scene where a
  • 5:17 - 5:20
canaanite is taking a lie detector test
  • 5:20 - 5:22
they ask him questions while monitoring
  • 5:22 - 5:24
the results how did you get to this
  • 5:24 - 5:25
    planet
  • 5:25 - 5:27
    walked
  • 5:27 - 5:29
once again how did you get to this
  • 5:29 - 5:32
    planet in a spaceship
  • 5:32 - 5:34
after the scientists are convinced that
  • 5:34 - 5:36
    the detector is working
  • 5:36 - 5:38
they ask what is the motive of the
  • 5:38 - 5:40
canaanite people in offering such great
  • 5:40 - 5:43
gifts to the people of the earth
  • 5:43 - 5:46
to bring to you the peace and plenty
  • 5:46 - 5:49
    which we ourselves enjoy
  • 5:49 - 5:51
and which we have in the past
  • 5:51 - 5:53
brought to other races throughout the
  • 5:53 - 5:55
    galaxy
  • 5:55 - 5:57
    after winning humanity's trust the
  • 5:57 - 5:59
aliens begin an exchange program with
  • 5:59 - 6:01
the candidates coming to earth while
  • 6:01 - 6:03
humans go to the cannamat homeworld to
  • 6:03 - 6:06
    enjoy a long vacation
  • 6:06 - 6:08
they don't know just how long it's going
  • 6:08 - 6:10
to be everyone is excited to leave on
  • 6:10 - 6:12
the alien spaceship as they think
  • 6:12 - 6:14
they're going off to some sort of
  • 6:14 - 6:16
paradise there's a great shot of people
  • 6:16 - 6:18
stepping on a large scale before
  • 6:18 - 6:21
boarding the spaceship and the canaanite
  • 6:21 - 6:23
in great foreshadowing has a really
  • 6:23 - 6:27
    creepy smile on his face
  • 6:34 - 6:37
after the famous it's a cookbook scene
  • 6:37 - 6:39
chambers tries to run down the stairs of
  • 6:39 - 6:41
the spacecraft but is blocked by the
  • 6:41 - 6:44
canaanite and forced onto the ship
  • 6:44 - 6:47
the rest of the book to serve man
  • 6:47 - 6:50
    it's a cookbook
  • 6:54 - 6:56
as the ship takes off there's a shot of
  • 6:56 - 7:00
a flying saucer taken from the 1956 film
  • 7:00 - 7:02
earth versus the flying saucers famous
  • 7:02 - 7:05
    special effects artist ray harryhausen
  • 7:05 - 7:07
created the original effect but is never
  • 7:07 - 7:09
    credited in the episode
  • 7:09 - 7:11
when searling first watched the rough
  • 7:11 - 7:14
cut of the episode he wasn't happy with
  • 7:14 - 7:16
it searling told the author damon knight
  • 7:16 - 7:18
that they were going to re-shoot some
  • 7:18 - 7:21
scenes and it was rod's hope to at least
  • 7:21 - 7:22
come within a few hundred yards of
  • 7:22 - 7:25
    damon's great story
  • 7:25 - 7:26
they made plans to film additional
  • 7:26 - 7:29
footage rewrite the alien's dialogue and
  • 7:29 - 7:32
    re-record the voice-over tracks
  • 7:32 - 7:34
in the original cut of the ending when
  • 7:34 - 7:36
patty shouts to serve man it's a
  • 7:36 - 7:37
    cookbook
  • 7:37 - 7:38
    there was a close-up of chamber's
  • 7:38 - 7:41
shocked face as the alien's hand reaches
  • 7:41 - 7:43
up to pinch his cheek feeling for
  • 7:43 - 7:45
    tenderness before shoving chambers up
  • 7:45 - 7:48
the stairs and closing the door
  • 7:48 - 7:50
sirling wrote the two additional scenes
  • 7:50 - 7:51
at the beginning and ending with
  • 7:51 - 7:53
chambers on board the spacecraft as a
  • 7:53 - 7:55
framing device to tie the episode
  • 7:55 - 7:56
    together
  • 7:56 - 7:58
they then used the rest of the footage
  • 7:58 - 8:00
that was already in the can as flashback
  • 8:00 - 8:04
    sequences with chambers narrating
  • 8:04 - 8:06
it was the only twilight zone episode
  • 8:06 - 8:08
where a character in the story directly
  • 8:08 - 8:10
speaks to the viewers other than
  • 8:10 - 8:11
    searling himself
  • 8:11 - 8:14
sterling also rewrote his opening and
  • 8:14 - 8:16
closing monologues to better reflect the
  • 8:16 - 8:18
final episode by the time the script
  • 8:18 - 8:20
    revisions were made kyle wasn't
  • 8:20 - 8:23
available to re-record them so joseph
  • 8:23 - 8:26
ruskin stepped in to do the voice over
  • 8:26 - 8:27
ruskin had played the genie in the
  • 8:27 - 8:29
twilight zone episode the man in the
  • 8:29 - 8:31
bottle but he was never credited in this
  • 8:31 - 8:34
episode kyle himself stated he was so
  • 8:34 - 8:36
tired after driving all night from one
  • 8:36 - 8:39
job to another and then doing brutal
  • 8:39 - 8:41
makeup that when they gave him the
  • 8:41 - 8:43
script for his lines he wasn't prepared
  • 8:43 - 8:45
and didn't do a very good job on the
  • 8:45 - 8:46
    voice over
  • 8:46 - 8:47
    he wasn't surprised that they
  • 8:47 - 8:50
    re-recorded his lines just disappointed
  • 8:50 - 8:51
    in himself
  • 8:51 - 8:53
sterling left on a five-week vacation
  • 8:53 - 8:55
and when he got back and viewed the
  • 8:55 - 8:57
results he agreed it was much better
  • 8:57 - 8:58
    than before
  • 8:58 - 9:00
a number of scenes were deleted and the
  • 9:00 - 9:02
order of some scenes was switched for
  • 9:02 - 9:05
    better clarity of storytelling
  • 9:05 - 9:07
    author damon knight was extremely
  • 9:07 - 9:09
pleased with the episode's outcome and
  • 9:09 - 9:11
shot off a note to sterling thanking him
  • 9:11 - 9:13
for making a dandy show that his kids
  • 9:13 - 9:15
loved but that they thought there should
  • 9:15 - 9:17
have been more to the story
  • 9:17 - 9:19
searling replied telling knight that he
  • 9:19 - 9:21
wasn't sure that they did justice to his
  • 9:21 - 9:24
story but every effort was made to do so
  • 9:24 - 9:26
and he hoped they were able to work
  • 9:26 - 9:28
together again that was not to be the
  • 9:28 - 9:30
case though as none of damon's other
  • 9:30 - 9:32
scripts ever made it into production was
  • 9:32 - 9:34
this one of your favorite twilight zone
  • 9:34 - 9:37
episodes if not what are some of your
  • 9:37 - 9:39
favorite episodes of this classic series
  • 9:39 - 9:41
i have so many favorites it would take
  • 9:41 - 9:44
me a long time to write them all down
  • 9:44 - 9:45
but let me know your thoughts in the
  • 9:45 - 9:48
comments below and as always this is
  • 9:48 - 9:51
rich from rerun zone signing off please
  • 9:51 - 9:54
    mr chambers eat
  • 9:54 - 10:07
we wouldn't want you to lose weight
  • 10:07 - 10:09
    you
