Andrew Shepard's Speech From The American President

  • 0:04 - 0:05
    The last couple of months,
  • 0:05 - 0:08
Senator Rumson has suggested that being president of this
  • 0:08 - 0:11
country was to a certain extent about character.
  • 0:11 - 0:12
    And although
  • 0:12 - 0:15
I've not been willing to engage in his attacks on me,
  • 0:15 - 0:16
    I've been here
  • 0:17 - 0:19
    3 years and 3 days.
  • 0:20 - 0:22
And I can tell you without hesitation,
  • 0:23 - 0:25
    being president of this country
  • 0:26 - 0:27
    is entirely
  • 0:27 - 0:28
    about character.
  • 0:29 - 0:30
    For the record,
  • 0:31 - 0:32
    yes,
  • 0:32 - 0:35
I am a card-carrying member of the ACLU,
  • 0:35 - 0:36
but the more important question is,
  • 0:37 - 0:37
    why aren't you,
  • 0:37 - 0:38
    Bob?
  • 0:39 - 0:40
    Now this is an organization
  • 0:41 - 0:44
whose sole purpose is to defend the Bill of Rights,
  • 0:44 - 0:45
so it naturally begs the question,
  • 0:46 - 0:47
    why would a senator,
  • 0:47 - 0:49
    his party's most powerful spokesman
  • 0:49 - 0:51
    and a candidate for president
  • 0:51 - 0:53
choose to reject upholding the Constitution?
  • 0:54 - 0:55
Now, if you can answer that question,
  • 0:55 - 0:56
    folks,
  • 0:56 - 0:57
then you're smarter than I am because
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    I didn't understand it until
  • 1:00 - 1:01
    a few hours ago.
  • 1:04 - 1:05
    America isn't easy.
  • 1:07 - 1:08
    America
  • 1:08 - 1:10
    is advanced citizenship.
  • 1:10 - 1:11
You've got to want it bad
  • 1:11 - 1:13
because it's gonna put up a fight.
  • 1:13 - 1:16
It's going to say, "You want free speech."
  • 1:16 - 1:19
Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil,
  • 1:19 - 1:24
who's standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that
  • 1:24 - 1:27
which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours.
  • 1:27 - 1:29
You want to claim this land as the land of the free,
  • 1:30 - 1:33
then the symbol of your country cannot just be a flag.
  • 1:33 - 1:36
The symbol also has to be one of its citizens
  • 1:36 - 1:40
exercising his right to burn that flag in protest.
  • 1:40 - 1:41
    Now show me that,
  • 1:41 - 1:42
    defend that,
  • 1:42 - 1:44
    celebrate that in your classrooms.
  • 1:44 - 1:47
Then you can stand up and sing about the land of the free.
  • 1:48 - 1:51
I've known Bob Rumson for years and I've been
  • 1:51 - 1:54
operating under the assumption that the reason Bob devotes
  • 1:54 - 1:57
so much time and energy to shouting at the rain was that he simply didn't get it.
  • 1:58 - 1:58
    Well,
  • 1:58 - 1:59
    I was wrong.
  • 1:59 - 2:01
Bob's problem isn't that he doesn't get it.
  • 2:02 - 2:04
Bob's problem is that he can't sell it.
  • 2:06 - 2:08
We have serious problems to solve,
  • 2:08 - 2:10
and we need serious people to solve them.
  • 2:11 - 2:13
And whatever your particular problem is,
  • 2:13 - 2:14
    I promise you,
  • 2:15 - 2:18
Bob Rumson is not the least bit interested in solving it.
  • 2:19 - 2:21
He is interested in two things,
  • 2:21 - 2:23
    and two things only,
  • 2:23 - 2:24
    making you afraid of it
  • 2:25 - 2:26
and telling you who's to blame for it.
  • 2:26 - 2:27
    That ladies and gentlemen,
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    is how you win elections.
  • 2:30 - 2:31
You gather a group of middle aged,
  • 2:31 - 2:32
    middle class,
  • 2:32 - 2:35
middle income voters who remember with longing an easier time,
  • 2:35 - 2:37
and you talk to them about family and
  • 2:38 - 2:39
    American values and character,
  • 2:40 - 2:41
and you wave an old photo of the
  • 2:41 - 2:44
president's girlfriend and you scream about patriotism.
  • 2:44 - 2:46
You tell them she's to blame for their lot in life.
  • 2:47 - 2:48
    You go on television,
  • 2:50 - 2:51
and you call her a whore.
  • 2:53 - 2:55
Sydney Ellen Wade has done nothing to you,
  • 2:55 - 2:55
    Bob.
  • 2:55 - 2:57
    She has done nothing,
  • 2:57 - 2:59
    but put herself through school,
  • 2:59 - 3:01
represent the interests of public school teachers,
  • 3:01 - 3:04
and lobby for the safety of our natural resources.
  • 3:04 - 3:06
You want a character to debate,
  • 3:06 - 3:06
    Bob,
  • 3:07 - 3:08
    you better stick with me
  • 3:08 - 3:11
because Sidney Ellen Wade is way out of your league.
  • 3:19 - 3:20
    I've loved two
  • 3:20 - 3:21
    women in my life.
  • 3:22 - 3:24
    I lost one to cancer.
  • 3:25 - 3:29
And I lost the other because I was so busy keeping my job.
  • 3:29 - 3:30
I forgot to do my job.
  • 3:33 - 3:34
    Well, that ends right now.
  • 3:35 - 3:36
    Tomorrow morning,
  • 3:37 - 3:40
the White House is sending a bill to Congress for its consideration.
  • 3:41 - 3:43
    It's White House resolution 455,
  • 3:43 - 3:44
    an energy bill
  • 3:45 - 3:50
requiring a 20% reduction of the emission of fossil fuels over the next 10 years.
  • 3:51 - 3:55
It is by far the most aggressive stride ever taken
  • 3:55 - 3:57
in the fight to reverse the effects of global warming.
  • 3:58 - 4:00
The other piece of legislation is the crime bill.
  • 4:02 - 4:04
    As of today,
  • 4:04 - 4:05
    it no longer exists.
  • 4:06 - 4:07
    I'm throwing it out.
  • 4:07 - 4:11
I'm throwing it out and writing a law that makes sense.
  • 4:12 - 4:15
You cannot address crime prevention without getting
  • 4:15 - 4:17
rid of assault weapons and handguns.
  • 4:17 - 4:19
I consider them a threat to national security,
  • 4:19 - 4:22
and I will go door to door if I have to,
  • 4:22 - 4:24
but I'm going to convince Americans that I'm right,
  • 4:24 - 4:26
and I'm going to get the guns.
  • 4:28 - 4:30
    We've got serious problems
  • 4:30 - 4:32
    and we need serious people.
  • 4:32 - 4:34
And if you want to talk about character,
  • 4:34 - 4:34
    Bob,
  • 4:35 - 4:38
you better come at me with more than a burning flag and a membership card.
  • 4:38 - 4:41
If you want to talk about character and American values,
  • 4:41 - 4:42
    fine.
  • 4:42 - 4:45
Just tell me where and when and I'll show up.
  • 4:45 - 4:46
This is a time for serious people,
  • 4:47 - 4:47
    Bob,
  • 4:47 - 4:49
and your 15 minutes are up.
  • 4:49 - 4:52
My name is Andrew Shepherd and I am the president.
