-
0:18 - 0:21Soon after its premiere,
the film Metropolis -
0:21 - 0:24was severely truncated
and alterations were made. -
0:24 - 0:27From that time onward,
more than a quarter of the film -
0:27 - 0:30was assumed to have been lost.
-
0:30 - 0:33Then, in 2008, a virtually complete
version of the film -
0:33 - 0:37was discovered in Buenos Aires.
What had been preserved -
0:37 - 0:40was, however, a heavily damaged
copy of the film -
0:40 - 0:43that had been printed to 16mm
film stock, -
0:43 - 0:48lacking the full frame
of the picture's original aspect ratio. -
0:48 - 0:52A considerable amount of the film
reconstruction was able to be completed -
0:52 - 0:54and the correct sequence
of its editing -
0:54 - 0:57established by means
of this Argentinian material. -
0:57 - 1:00Spanish intertitles have been translated
into German -
1:00 - 1:02with the aid of the censor-cards.
-
1:02 - 1:07In order to display in their correct
position on the image -
1:07 - 1:09the cropped elements taken
from the 16mm negative, -
1:09 - 1:13the missing portion of the frame
has been marked by black. -
1:13 - 1:17The intertitles appear
with their original graphic treatment. -
1:17 - 1:21Those titles which appear in a different
typeface (like the one used here) -
1:21 - 1:24have been added to summarise
the content of still-missing scenes -
1:24 - 1:26as far as is necessary
to facilitate -
1:26 - 1:29an adequate understanding
of the storyline. -
1:29 - 1:32Shorter gaps are indicated
by small segments of black leader. -
1:32 - 1:40This film was produced by Ufa

3:58 - 5:19Shift change.
-
5:19 - 5:22Deep beneath
-
5:22 - 5:26the earth lay the
-
5:26 - 6:40City of the Workers.
-
6:40 - 6:46As deep beneath the earth
as the City of the Workers lay, -
6:46 - 6:51so high above it towered the complex
known as the "Sons' Club", -
6:51 - 7:30with its lecture halls and libraries,
its theatres and stadiums. -
7:30 - 7:34Fathers, for whom every revolution
of a mechanical wheel meant gold, -
7:34 - 7:59had bestowed upon their sons
the wonder of the Eternal Gardens. -
7:59 - 8:02Which of you ladies shall today
-
8:02 - 10:46have the honour of entertaining Master Freder,
Joh Fredersen's son? -
10:46 - 10:53Look! These are your brothers!
-
10:53 - 11:03Look - !
-
11:03 - 12:36These are your brothers!
-
12:36 - 13:28Who - was that?
-
13:28 - 13:31But this was what happened to Freder -
-
13:31 - 13:34the son of Joh Fredersen,
the master of Metropolis - -
13:34 - 17:44as he sought out the girl:
-
17:44 - 21:38To the new Tower of Babel -
to my father - ! -
21:38 - 21:51Why is it, Josaphat, that I learn of this explosion
from my son, and not from you - ! -
21:51 - 23:07Details - !
-
23:07 - 23:15What were you looking for
in the Machine-Halls, Freder? -
23:15 - 23:48I wanted to look into the faces of the people
whose little children are my brothers, my sisters... -
23:48 - 23:51Your magnificent city, Father -
-
23:51 - 24:22and you the brain of this city -
and all of us within the light of this city... - -
24:22 - 24:32...and where are the people, Father,
whose hands built your city - ? -
24:32 - 24:43Off where they belong...
-
24:43 - 24:51...off where they belong...?
-
24:51 - 25:30...in the Depths...?
-
25:30 - 26:07And if those in the Depths
one day rise against you? -
26:07 - 26:33The chief foreman of the Heart-Machine, Grot, -
with an important message... -
26:33 - 27:19There were two more copies
of those damnable plans, Herr Fredersen... -
27:19 - 27:38...in the pockets of two men who met
with an accident today at the M-Machine... -
27:38 - 28:09How is it, Josaphat, that these plans
were brought to me by Grot, rather than by you? -
28:09 - 29:19Apply to the G-Bank
for your remaining wages... -
29:19 - 29:23Father, do you know what it means
to be dismissed by you? - -
29:23 - 30:40It means: To be sent below! -
Father - below! Into the Depths - ! -
30:40 - 31:05Do you know what it means to be dismissed
like that by Joh Fredersen? -
31:05 - 31:50Would you like to come with me,
Josaphat? -
31:50 - 32:09Go home, Josaphat, and wait for me...
I still have a long way to go tonight... -
32:09 - 32:22Into the Depths, -
to my brothers... -
32:22 - 33:44From today on I wish to be kept precisely informed
of my son's every move... -
33:44 - 33:57Brother...
-
33:57 - 34:08...the Machine! There needs
to be someone at the Machine! -
34:08 - 34:12There will be someone at the machine...
-
34:12 - 34:26ME.
-
34:26 - 35:03Listen to me...
I want to trade my life with you... -
35:03 - 35:14Josaphat.
99th Block. House 7, 7th Floor. -
35:14 - 35:49Wait for me -
both of you... -
35:49 - 38:01Josaphat.
99th Block. House 7, 7th Floor. -
38:01 - 38:04In the middle of Metropolis,
-
38:04 - 38:15there stands a strange house
that the centuries had overlooked. -
38:15 - 39:39The man who dwelled within
was Rotwang, the inventor. -
39:39 - 39:41Hel
-
39:41 - 39:46Born to bring me happiness
and a benediction to all mankind. -
39:46 - 40:16Lost to Joh Fredersen.
Died giving life to Freder, Joh Fredersen's son. -
40:16 - 40:26A mind like yours, Rotwang,
should be able to forget... -
40:26 - 40:39Only one time in life did I forget something:
that Hel was a woman - and you a man... -
40:39 - 40:51Let the dead lie, Rotwang...
She's dead for you as she is for me... -
40:51 - 41:06For me she isn't dead, Joh Fredersen -
for me she lives - ! -
41:06 - 41:21Do you think the loss of a hand
is too high a price for recreating Hel - ?! -
41:21 - 43:26Do you wish to see her - ?!
-
43:26 - 43:29Now, Joh Fredersen - ?!
-
43:29 - 43:33Isn't it worth losing a hand
to have created the man of the future - -
43:33 - 43:43the Machine-Man - ?!
-
43:43 - 43:4724 more hours of work -
-
43:47 - 44:12and no man, Joh Fredersen, will be able
to differentiate the Machine-Man from a mortal - ! -
44:12 - 44:45The woman is mine, Joh Fredersen!
Hel's son was yours! -
44:45 - 45:00And what brings you my way,
Joh Fredersen? -
45:00 - 45:20I need your advice -
as usual, when all my experts fail me... -
45:20 - 45:23Can you decipher for me these plans
-
45:23 - 46:04that for months have been getting discovered
in the pockets of my workers? -
46:04 - 47:35...at two... once my shift ends!
She has summoned us again... -
47:35 - 48:12Father - ! Father - !
Will ten hours never come to an end - ??! ! -
48:12 - 48:17- it's a blueprint
of the two-thousand-year-old catacombs -
48:17 - 48:56deep below the lowest levels
of your Metropolis... -
48:56 - 52:28I should like to glean what my workers
are doing exactly in those catacombs... -
52:28 - 52:30Today I shall tell you
-
52:30 - 52:35the legend of THE CONSTRUCTION
OF THE TOWER OF BABEL... -
52:35 - 52:51The Legend of THE CONSTRUCTION
OF THE TOWER OF BABEL -
52:51 - 53:00Come! Let us build a tower
whose zenith shall reach unto the stars! -
53:00 - 53:04And at the tower's zenith we shall write:
-
53:04 - 53:29Great is the world and its Maker!
And great is Man! -
53:29 - 53:32...but those who had conceived
of the Tower of Babel -
53:32 - 53:34could not build the Tower of Babel.
-
53:34 - 53:56The task was too great.
So they paid wages to outside hands... -
53:56 - 54:01But the hands that built the Tower of Babel
knew nothing of the dream -
54:01 - 54:34of which the head that had conceived it
had been fantasising. -
54:34 - 54:53The hymns of praise of one man
became the curses of others. -
54:53 - 55:07The same language was spoken,
but these men did not understand one another... -
55:07 - 55:30Great is the world and its Maker
and great is Man -
55:30 - 55:36HEAD and HANDS require a Mediator.
-
55:36 - 56:12THE MEDIATOR BETWEEN HEAD AND HANDS
MUST BE THE HEART! -
56:12 - 56:37And where is our Mediator,
Maria - ? -
56:37 - 56:58Wait for him!
He will surely come! -
56:58 - 58:51We will wait, Maria...!
But not for much longer - ! -
58:51 - 58:59Oh Mediator,
have you finally come... -
58:59 - 59:35You summoned me -
here I am! -
59:35 - 59:51Rotwang, give the Machine-Man
the likeness of this woman... -
59:51 - 59:55I shall sow discord
between them and her! -
59:55 - 60:26I shall destroy their belief
in this woman - -
60:26 - 60:59Leave me alone now, Joh Fredersen...
You'll find the way back without me... -
60:59 - 61:03You fool! Now you shall also lose
the last remaining thing you still had from Hel... -
61:03 - 61:30your son...
-
61:30 - 66:06Until tomorrow, in the cathedral!
-
66:06 - 66:15END OF THE PRELUDE
-
66:15 - 66:56INTERMEZZO
-
66:56 - 67:00Freder witnesses a monk at the pulpit
who preaches: -
67:00 - 67:05"Verily, I say unto you: the days
of which the Apocalypse speaks draw nigh!" -
67:05 - 67:10The monk's hand points to the Bible,
in which it is written: -
67:10 - 67:14"And I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured
beast, full of names of blasphemy, -
67:14 - 67:16having seven heads and ten horns.
-
67:16 - 67:20And the woman was arrayed
in purple and scarlet colour, -
67:20 - 67:22having a golden cup in her hand.
-
67:22 - 67:26And upon her forehead was a name
written, a mystery: -
67:26 - 67:29BABYLON THE GREAT, the Mother
of Abominations ofthe Earth. -
67:29 - 67:49And I saw the woman drunken
with the blood ofthe Saints." -
67:49 - 68:39You will annihilate Joh Fredersen -
him and his city and his son - ! -
68:39 - 68:41GLUTTONY

68:48 - 68:50ANGER
-
68:50 - 69:06SLOTH
-
69:06 - 69:11Had you come earlier,
you wouldn't have frightened me... -
69:11 - 70:20I now beg of you: stay away from me
and my beloved...! -
70:20 - 70:38Where is the one whose clothes
you are wearing? -
70:38 - 71:18Josaphat.
99th Block. House 7, 7th Floor. -
71:18 - 71:22Would you please wake Georgy up?
-
71:22 - 71:45He must lead me
to the Workers' City at once... -
71:45 - 72:13No. 11811, get back to the Machine
and forget that you ever left it - understood? -
72:13 - 72:17I have to have someone
who's faithful to me, Josaphat, - -
72:17 - 72:47otherwise, how shall I attain the end-goal
of my path - ?! -
72:47 - 72:51I must go on, Josaphat, -
must now, on my own, -
72:51 - 72:58seek out the person to whom Georgy
was supposed to lead me... -
72:58 - 74:51Tonight, Josaphat -
tonight when I come back... -
74:51 - 75:34Josaphat.
99th Block. House 7, 7th Floor. -
75:34 - 76:28So, what price are you demanding
for leaving this residence tonight? -
76:28 - 76:37You still don't seem to have grasped
who sent me here... -
76:37 - 76:40CENTRAL BANK OF METROPOLIS
-
76:40 - 77:38This man doesn't want his son
to find you still here tonight! -
77:38 - 78:39In three hours' time
I shall be calling for you! -
78:39 - 86:31Come! It is time to give the Man-Machine
your face! -
86:31 - 86:43Where is Maria - ?!
-
86:43 - 87:05She's with your father...
-
87:05 - 87:12I'm telling you,
she is with your father - ! -
87:12 - 87:16"She is the most perfect and most obedient tool
that a man has ever possessed! -
87:16 - 87:20Tonight you shall see how she holds up
before the eyes ofthe upper hundred. -
87:20 - 87:24You shall see her dance, and if only one single
person recognises the machine in her, -
87:24 - 87:28I will call myself a bungler
who never succeeded at anything! -
87:28 - 87:32C. Rotwang"
-
87:32 - 88:09"C. A. Rotwang requests Herr Joh Fredersen
to be his guest this evening." -
88:09 - 90:07I want you to go to those in the Depths
in order to annihilate the work of your prototype! -
90:07 - 92:04"C. A. Rotwang requests Herr Joh Fredersen
to be his guest this evening." -
92:04 - 93:22Verily, I say unto you: the days
of which the Apocalypse speaks draw nigh...! -
93:22 - 94:13All Seven Deadly Sins,
on her behalf - ! -
94:13 - 94:30Death overtakes the City - !
-
94:30 - 94:50END OF THE INTERMEZZO
-
94:50 - 95:16The Revelation of St. John
Avalun Publishing, Hellerau -
95:16 - 95:21I escaped from the Thin Man
wearing this attire... -
95:21 - 95:35But for ten days your father's bloodhound
has been making the Workers' City unsafe... -
95:35 - 95:38The only thing keeping the workers in check
-
95:38 - 96:07is their expectation for the Mediator
promised unto them... -
96:07 - 96:23Even stranger things
have been happening, Freder... -
96:23 - 96:38On that evening when you fell ill...
-
96:38 - 96:49...once the best of friends...
because of that woman... -
96:49 - 97:02...the other man...
on that same evening... -
97:02 - 97:44...the Eternal Gardens lie abandoned...
but night after night in Yoshiwara... -
97:44 - 97:51And this woman,
at whose feet all sins are heaped... -
97:51 - 98:04...is also called Maria...
-
98:04 - 98:25That same woman that those in the Depths
regard as a saint - ?! -
98:25 - 98:29Many now go to the City of the Dead,
-
98:29 - 98:40to a woman they have judged
to be as true as gold. -
98:40 - 99:07The Mediator is not likely
to miss that occasion... -
99:07 - 99:10Whatever happens tonight:
-
99:10 - 99:25it is my express order to allow the workers
to do as they please... -
99:25 - 99:31Joh Fredersen wants to let those in the Depths
use force and do wrong -
99:31 - 99:53so that he can claim the right
to use force against them... -
99:53 - 99:59When you spoke to your poor brothers,
you talked about peace, Maria... -
99:59 - 100:28today a mouthpiece of Joh Fredersen
incites them to rebel against him... -
100:28 - 101:11She will destroy their belief
in the Mediator! -
101:11 - 101:30You know I've always talked about peace...
but your Mediator hasn't come... -
101:30 - 101:41You've waited long enough!
Your time has come - ! -
101:41 - 101:45...but I've tricked Joh Fredersen!
-
101:45 - 101:59Your clone does not obey his will -
only mine alone! -
101:59 - 102:10Who is the living fodder
for the machines for Metropolis - ?! -
102:10 - 102:31Who smears the machine-joints
with their own marrow - ?! -
102:31 - 102:43Who feeds the machines
with their own flesh - ?! -
102:43 - 102:53Let the machines starve, you fools - !
Finish them off - ! ! -
102:53 - 103:14Do them in -
these machines - ! ! -
103:14 - 103:21You aren't Maria - ! ! !
-
103:21 - 103:38YOU ARE NOT MARIA - !
-
103:38 - 103:46Maria talks of peace, not murder - !
This is not Maria - ! ! -
103:46 - 103:54Joh Fredersen's son - ! !
-
103:54 - 104:31Do him in, the dog,
in his white silken hide - ! ! ! -
104:31 - 104:36Get your women, your sons,
out of the Workers' City! -
104:36 - 104:50Let no-one stay behind!
Death to the machines - ! ! ! -
104:50 - 104:53In the attic of his home,
-
104:53 - 104:56Rotwang displays
for Maria his ever-growing intoxication -
104:56 - 104:59with his triumph over Fredersen:
-
104:59 - 105:01" - and twice over did I trick Joh Fredersen - !
-
105:01 - 105:05For I concealed from him that his son
wants to be the Mediator of your brothers - -
105:05 - 105:07and is in love with you - !"
-
105:07 - 105:10Maria isn't the only one listening to Rotwang.
-
105:10 - 105:14On the other side of the attic's window,
Joh Fredersen was eavesdropping... -
105:14 - 105:19Joh Fredersen breaks into Rotwang's attic.
He wrestles with his old rival and overtakes him. -
105:19 - 105:49Maria is free.
-
105:49 - 106:12...faithful after all...
-
106:12 - 106:50Come, Freder!
We still have to go through the Workers' City. -
106:50 - 106:53Women and men,
let no-one miss out on today - ! -
106:53 - 109:04Death to the machines - ! !
-
109:04 - 109:49Not one man -
not one woman has stayed behind - ! -
109:49 - 110:05Leave the machines - !
Let them race to their death - ! -
110:05 - 110:18To the Heart-Machine - !
-
110:18 - 111:42DANGER
-
111:42 - 111:51Open the gates!
-
111:51 - 111:58You have to open the gates!
-
111:58 - 112:01If the Heart-Machine perishes,
-
112:01 - 112:53nothing in the Machine-District
will be left standing - ! ! -
112:53 - 112:57Have you lost your minds - ??
-
112:57 - 118:53If the Heart-Machine perishes,
the entire Workers' City will be laid to waste - ! ! -
118:53 - 119:49Where are your fathers,
your mothers? -
119:49 - 121:32Do you have any idea that your son
is amongst the workers?! -
121:32 - 121:48Yes - you! You're Maria - !
-
121:48 - 126:30To the air shafts - quickly! Quickly!
The reservoirs have burst! The city is drowning - ! -
126:30 - 126:46We'll take the children
to the Sons' Club! -
126:46 - 127:14Why are all the lights out?
-
127:14 - 127:22I need to know - !
Where is my son?! ! ! -
127:22 - 127:26Tomorrow thousands
will ask in fury and desperation: -
127:26 - 128:13Joh Fredersen,
where is my son - ?! -
128:13 - 128:26Where are your children??!
-
128:26 - 128:39The city is drowned,
