Decomposing whole numbers | Foundations of numbers | 3rd grade math (TX TEKS) | Khan Academy

  • 0:01 - 0:03
    - [Narrator] We are
    asked which answer choice
  • 0:03 - 0:04
    describes the number,
  • 0:04 - 0:06
and I'm not gonna say it
'cause that might be a hint.
  • 0:06 - 0:07
    This number right over here.
  • 0:08 - 0:09
So pause this video and have a go at that
  • 0:09 - 0:11
    before we do this together.
  • 0:12 - 0:14
Okay, now let's do this together.
  • 0:14 - 0:15
There's a couple of ways we could do it.
  • 0:15 - 0:18
    We could try to express
    this number in words,
  • 0:18 - 0:20
or we could look at these words here
  • 0:20 - 0:24
and express them as a number
and see which one matches up.
  • 0:24 - 0:27
Well, I'm gonna go with the second way
  • 0:27 - 0:28
    because they're saying things
  • 0:28 - 0:32
in not always the most standard way.
  • 0:32 - 0:34
    I have 14 100s here.
  • 0:34 - 0:35
    And you normally wouldn't say,
  • 0:35 - 0:36
well, sometimes you might say it that way,
  • 0:36 - 0:38
but let's just try to break it out here.
  • 0:38 - 0:41
    So if I have 14 1,000s
    as this choice A says,
  • 0:42 - 0:44
that would be 14 and then 1,000s,
  • 0:45 - 0:47
and then two, that I'm adding seven 10s.
  • 0:49 - 0:50
    So seven 10s is what?
  • 0:50 - 0:53
    Well, it's seven in the
    10s place and zero ones.
  • 0:53 - 0:55
Or another way to think about it, it's 70.
  • 0:56 - 0:59
So if I took 14,000 plus
70, what is it going to be?
  • 1:00 - 1:01
And I could do this here
  • 1:01 - 1:03
if I wanna line up the
    place values, 14,070.
  • 1:05 - 1:10
Well, I have no ones, I have
    seven 10s, I have no 100s.
  • 1:11 - 1:15
    I have four 1000s and I have one 10,000.
  • 1:15 - 1:18
I have 14,070, which is exactly the number
  • 1:18 - 1:19
    that they have over here.
  • 1:20 - 1:23
    So we luckily stumbled on,
or we looked at choice A
  • 1:24 - 1:26
and it was actually the choice
  • 1:27 - 1:29
    that describes this number.
  • 1:29 - 1:30
But let's look at the other ones
  • 1:30 - 1:31
and see why that doesn't make sense.
  • 1:32 - 1:34
    The second choice here
    still has the 14,000s.
  • 1:34 - 1:36
So it still has this part right over here,
  • 1:36 - 1:38
    but they say seven ones.
  • 1:38 - 1:41
So if you were to add 14,000
  • 1:41 - 1:45
    and then have seven
    ones, you'd get 14,000.
  • 1:45 - 1:46
    And then you would add
  • 1:46 - 1:49
those seven ones in the ones place.
  • 1:49 - 1:50
    So you would get that.
  • 1:51 - 1:54
And then the last one, the sum of 14 100s
  • 1:54 - 1:55
    and seven 10s.
  • 1:55 - 1:57
Well, they have the seven 10s part,
  • 1:57 - 2:01
    which we already said
is the same thing as 70.
  • 2:01 - 2:04
But what does 1,400 look like?
  • 2:04 - 2:05
    Well, 1,400.
  • 2:05 - 2:10
Let me do this in a new
    color, maybe purple, 1,400.
  • 2:11 - 2:15
That is one way to think about
it is you could go to the,
  • 2:16 - 2:18
let's look at our place value here.
  • 2:18 - 2:21
    If this is ones, this
    is 10s, this is 100s.
  • 2:23 - 2:25
You could say you have 14 of these 100s.
  • 2:25 - 2:27
Or another way to think about it
  • 2:27 - 2:30
is you have four 100s and a 1,000.
  • 2:30 - 2:33
Or another way of saying a 1,000 is 1,000.
  • 2:34 - 2:35
    That's the 1000's place.
  • 2:35 - 2:36
    So 1400 looks like this.
  • 2:36 - 2:38
So if you were to add 1,400 and 70,
  • 2:39 - 2:44
    you would get 1,470,
  • 2:44 - 2:46
not what they originally asked us about.
  • 2:46 - 2:48
So we can feel very good about choice A.
