Interview with Valeria

  • 0:03 - 0:05
    Hi, thanks for agreeing to
  • 0:05 - 0:10
    do this interview with me
  • 0:11 - 0:12
First of all, how are you?
  • 0:12 - 0:15
Could you tell me a bit about yourself?
  • 0:15 - 0:16
    Hi, hello!
  • 0:16 - 0:19
    My name is Valeria.
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    I'm 21 years old.
  • 0:21 - 0:25
    I'm from Mexico and ...
  • 0:25 - 0:29
    I'm currently a student
    studying engineering in Exeter.
  • 0:29 - 0:30
    That's great.
  • 0:32 - 0:35
    Where exactly
    in Mexico are you from?
  • 0:38 - 0:42
    I'm from a state
    called Baja California Sur
  • 0:43 - 0:45
and the city I'm from is called La Paz.
  • 0:46 - 0:49
    It's relatively small
    compared to other Mexican cities.
  • 0:49 - 0:51
    But...
  • 0:51 - 0:55
It's close to the Pacific Ocean.
  • 0:55 - 0:56
    As well as the beach.
  • 0:56 - 0:59
    It's very hot.
  • 0:59 - 1:01
    People usually get confused.
  • 1:02 - 1:06
    Because they think that...
  • 1:06 - 1:09
Baja California Sur is close to Tijuana
  • 1:09 - 1:13
and that we are bordering America.
  • 1:14 - 1:17
But by car it would take around
  • 1:17 - 1:19
    20 hours to reach Tijuana.
  • 1:20 - 1:22
    So, we aren't
    that close to America.
  • 1:22 - 1:24
    But people get that confused
  • 1:24 - 1:26
because Mexico is a very big country.
  • 1:27 - 1:28
    I've seen photos
  • 1:28 - 1:32
and it seems like a beautiful place.
  • 1:32 - 1:34
Did you spend your whole life there
  • 1:34 - 1:35
    before coming to Devon?
  • 1:35 - 1:38
Or have spent time in other countries?
  • 1:39 - 1:41
No, I've always lived in Mexico.
  • 1:43 - 1:46
    But before coming to Devon
  • 1:46 - 1:49
    I lived in Cambridge
  • 1:49 - 1:51
for around one year and a half.
  • 1:51 - 1:55
    But the only other
    country that I've lived in
  • 1:55 - 1:57
    has been England.
  • 2:00 - 2:01
    How interesting.
  • 2:01 - 2:03
    And how long
    have you lived in Devon?
  • 2:04 - 2:05
    In devon...
  • 2:05 - 2:07
    since I came to university.
  • 2:07 - 2:09
So a year and a half.
  • 2:11 - 2:14
    That doesn't seem long.
  • 2:14 - 2:15
So, how has been your experience
  • 2:15 - 2:17
    moving here been like?
  • 2:19 - 2:20
    I feel like
  • 2:20 - 2:23
    compared to other immigrants
  • 2:23 - 2:27
    that have only
    experienced their own country...
  • 2:27 - 2:31
    where they were
    born and grew up.
  • 2:31 - 2:35
    I had the opportunity
    to live in Cambridge...
  • 2:35 - 2:39
    so I was already
    familiar with English culture.
  • 2:39 - 2:41
I was more used to the accent..
  • 2:41 - 2:42
    the language...
  • 2:42 - 2:43
    the food.
  • 2:43 - 2:46
So, it wasn't a big cultural shock.
  • 2:46 - 2:50
The fact that I was moving to Exeter.
  • 2:50 - 2:52
Because I was already living in England.
  • 2:52 - 2:56
    And one could say my
    mind was already 'programmed'...
  • 2:58 - 3:00
    to what England is.
  • 3:01 - 3:03
So is there a specific reason
  • 3:03 - 3:06
that made you decide to move here?
  • 3:07 - 3:09
    Or was it...
  • 3:10 - 3:13
a decision made on a whim?
  • 3:17 - 3:18
    Well, no.
  • 3:20 - 3:24
    There were various factors
  • 3:25 - 3:28
that played in me choosing Exeter.
