Everything you ever wanted to know about slot machines | Epidsode 03

  • 0:00 - 0:02
In episode 3 of this series, we're
  • 0:02 - 0:05
covering exactly: how does a slot machine
  • 0:05 - 0:07
really work? That's not a super
  • 0:07 - 0:09
    straightforward thing to answer because
  • 0:09 - 0:10
there's several different types of slot
  • 0:10 - 0:12
machines that are in use in the United
  • 0:12 - 0:15
States, namely Class 2 machines and class
  • 0:15 - 0:19
3 machines. Before the 1970s, all slot
  • 0:19 - 0:21
machines were mechanical. The reels would
  • 0:21 - 0:23
spin around and then a hook would come
  • 0:23 - 0:26
down randomly stopping the reels with
  • 0:26 - 0:28
the Advent of the video slot. Slot
  • 0:28 - 0:30
machines are really just computers now
  • 0:30 - 0:32
and they use a chip called a random
  • 0:32 - 0:34
    number generator to provide their
  • 0:34 - 0:36
    Randomness even machines that have
  • 0:36 - 0:38
mechanical reels today. They work in the
  • 0:38 - 0:40
opposite way the computer tells them
  • 0:40 - 0:41
where they're going to stop and then
  • 0:41 - 0:43
they stop in that spot and these
  • 0:43 - 0:44
machines today are what's referred to as
  • 0:44 - 0:47
    a class 3 machine. They're what's in Las
  • 0:47 - 0:49
Vegas, and they're what most people think
  • 0:49 - 0:51
about when they talk about slot machines.
  • 0:51 - 0:53
We'll come back to these in a minute but
  • 0:53 - 0:55
first let's talk about class 2 machines.
  • 0:55 - 0:58
The class 3 Las Vegas style slot machine
  • 0:58 - 1:00
was all that there was when Congress
  • 1:00 - 1:02
signed into law. The Indian gaming
  • 1:02 - 1:04
regulatory act. This was an agreement
  • 1:04 - 1:07
with Indian tribes that said that all
  • 1:07 - 1:09
gambling was going to be split into
  • 1:09 - 1:11
three categories class one games are
  • 1:11 - 1:13
things like prizes for drawings and
  • 1:13 - 1:15
giveaways, things like that class 2 games
  • 1:15 - 1:17
are games that are played player against
  • 1:17 - 1:20
player things like Bingo and poker. Class
  • 1:20 - 1:22
3 games are pretty much anything that
  • 1:22 - 1:24
doesn't fall under class one or Class 2,
  • 1:24 - 1:25
and it's games where players play
  • 1:25 - 1:27
against the house. That's things like
  • 1:27 - 1:29
roulette, Blackjack and then of course,
  • 1:29 - 1:31
the slot machines. So what's a casino to
  • 1:31 - 1:34
do if they want to have slot machines,
  • 1:34 - 1:36
but they aren't approved for class three
  • 1:36 - 1:38
games they can't have any slot machines.
  • 1:38 - 1:40
So what game designers did was take a
  • 1:40 - 1:43
class 2 game electronic Bingo and make
  • 1:43 - 1:45
it look and act like a slot machine. So
  • 1:45 - 1:48
in some casinos, you walk in to play a
  • 1:48 - 1:51
slot machine and it looks exactly like
  • 1:51 - 1:53
    you're playing a slot machine but you're
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    actually playing electronic Bingo to
  • 1:55 - 1:57
most people, you would never really
  • 1:57 - 1:59
actually notice a difference that you
  • 1:59 - 2:01
aren't playing a real slot machine. But
  • 2:01 - 2:03
if you read the game rules, it'll explain
  • 2:03 - 2:05
all about the bingo game also if you
  • 2:05 - 2:07
look around on the game cabinet, you can
  • 2:07 - 2:09
usually find a little screen. It'll tell
  • 2:09 - 2:11
you what's going on with the bingo game
  • 2:11 - 2:13
what balls have been called and how many
  • 2:13 - 2:15
your card has matched one question that
  • 2:15 - 2:17
I always get asked is are you actually
  • 2:17 - 2:20
playing player against player? And to
  • 2:20 - 2:22
some degree. Because it's part of the law,
  • 2:22 - 2:24
you're always going to be playing player
  • 2:24 - 2:27
against player but reality, it's only in
  • 2:27 - 2:30
technicality something like 99% of the
  • 2:30 - 2:32
pay is going to come from a consolation
  • 2:32 - 2:34
prize. And is in no way affected by the
  • 2:34 - 2:37
other players and then something like 1%
  • 2:37 - 2:39
of the pay is going to come from that
  • 2:39 - 2:41
player vers player aspect something like
  • 2:41 - 2:43
whoever matched the most balls will get
  • 2:43 - 2:44
the prize pool added to their bonus
  • 2:44 - 2:46
round or something like that in that
  • 2:46 - 2:48
case the bonus round might pay slightly
  • 2:48 - 2:52
more or slightly less depending on how
  • 2:52 - 2:53
things shake out, but it really doesn't
  • 2:53 - 2:57
affect anything. So no, in reality you're
  • 2:57 - 2:59
not playing player against player, you're
  • 2:59 - 3:01
just playing with the other players when
  • 3:01 - 3:03
you spend the Bingo machine you're going
  • 3:03 - 3:05
to be given a new card with 25 spaces on
  • 3:05 - 3:08
it, just like in real Bingo. Then a set
  • 3:08 - 3:09
number of balls will be drawn and
  • 3:09 - 3:11
depending on how many balls you match
  • 3:11 - 3:13
will determine what prize you get. The
  • 3:13 - 3:15
other players aren't going to make any
  • 3:15 - 3:17
difference on how many balls you match
  • 3:17 - 3:18
and then all the different games in the
  • 3:18 - 3:21
casino with their different game themes,
  • 3:21 - 3:23
    and the different denominations. They're
  • 3:23 - 3:24
each going to have a different number of
  • 3:24 - 3:26
    winning combinations and then different
  • 3:26 - 3:28
amounts that are one on each different
  • 3:28 - 3:30
combination. So matching eight balls on
  • 3:30 - 3:32
one machine might win you like five
  • 3:32 - 3:34
credits and matching eight balls on a
  • 3:34 - 3:36
different machine might win you, like 20
  • 3:36 - 3:38
credits. So all the different games on
  • 3:38 - 3:40
each Bingo server are playing the same
  • 3:40 - 3:42
game and getting the same information,
  • 3:42 - 3:44
but they're all doing different things
  • 3:44 - 3:45
with that information really, it's just a
  • 3:45 - 3:48
different form of Randomness and you can
  • 3:48 - 3:49
pretty much ignore the fact that you're
  • 3:49 - 3:51
really playing bingo. So that already
  • 3:51 - 3:52
debunks the myth that playing in an
  • 3:52 - 3:55
empty casino is better but on top of
  • 3:55 - 3:56
that there isn't just one Bingo server
  • 3:56 - 3:58
for the whole Casino each casino is
  • 3:58 - 4:00
going to have a couple different bingo
  • 4:00 - 4:02
servers for each manufacturer of the
  • 4:02 - 4:04
games plus it's also possible for those
  • 4:04 - 4:05
servers to be shared by different
  • 4:05 - 4:08
casinos in different parts of the city,
  • 4:08 - 4:09
and even different parts of the state
  • 4:09 - 4:11
for that matter. So just because the
  • 4:11 - 4:13
casino that you're in is busy or it's
  • 4:13 - 4:15
empty or whatever you still have no idea
  • 4:15 - 4:17
how many people you're playing with, not
  • 4:17 - 4:19
that it really matters. Anyway, in
  • 4:19 - 4:21
addition to the Bingo slot machines,
  • 4:21 - 4:23
there's also slot machines based on
  • 4:23 - 4:25
other systems as well. Washington state
  • 4:25 - 4:27
uses slot machines based on Lottery
  • 4:27 - 4:29
scratch offs there's machines based on
  • 4:29 - 4:30
    historic horse racing. There's also
  • 4:30 - 4:32
machines based on pole tabs that are
  • 4:32 - 4:33
pretty popular, we're going to have to
  • 4:33 - 4:35
come back to these and discuss all these
  • 4:35 - 4:37
different machines at a later date.
  • 4:37 - 4:38
Though keep in mind that while Class 2
  • 4:38 - 4:40
machines are mostly found in casinos
  • 4:40 - 4:43
that can't have class 3 machines. Any
  • 4:43 - 4:45
casino that's approved for class 3
  • 4:45 - 4:47
machines can also have class 2. There's
  • 4:47 - 4:49
casinos all over the country that have a
  • 4:49 - 4:52
mix of Class 2 and class 3 in the same
  • 4:52 - 4:53
building. If you want to know if you're
  • 4:53 - 4:56
    playing a Class 2 or a class 3 machine,
  • 4:56 - 4:58
just ask an attendant. They won't be able
  • 4:58 - 4:59
to answer a lot of the questions that
  • 4:59 - 5:01
the custom customers like to ask but
  • 5:01 - 5:04
Class 2 versus class 3 something they
  • 5:04 - 5:05
should have no problem with. But let's
  • 5:05 - 5:07
talk about the class 3 machines as
  • 5:07 - 5:09
that's what I really want to focus on
  • 5:09 - 5:11
with this series. Just a reminder though,
  • 5:11 - 5:12
if you're getting value out of this,
  • 5:12 - 5:14
could you hit the like button for me
  • 5:14 - 5:17
please consider subscribing, leave me a
  • 5:17 - 5:18
comment and let me know if you've played
  • 5:18 - 5:20
the Bingo machines. And if you guys have
  • 5:20 - 5:23
had any luck on them class 3 machines
  • 5:23 - 5:25
use what's called a random number
  • 5:25 - 5:26
generator. This is a chip generating
  • 5:26 - 5:29
random numbers thousands of times per
  • 5:29 - 5:30
    second usually people have this
  • 5:30 - 5:32
    misconception that slot machines are
  • 5:32 - 5:35
like a deck of cards the wins and losses
  • 5:35 - 5:37
are going to be in a set sequence like
  • 5:37 - 5:40
win loss loss win and then a big win and
  • 5:40 - 5:42
if you get up and go to the bathroom,
  • 5:42 - 5:43
before you get that big win, somebody
  • 5:43 - 5:45
sits down. They're going to get your big
  • 5:45 - 5:48
win that's not how they work at all. A
  • 5:48 - 5:49
slot machine is much more similar to
  • 5:49 - 5:51
like the Powerball jackpot. Just because
  • 5:51 - 5:53
somebody reaches their hand in and draws
  • 5:53 - 5:55
some balls out of the machine doesn't
  • 5:55 - 5:56
mean that the next person is going to
  • 5:56 - 5:58
reach their hand in and grab the exact
  • 5:58 - 6:00
same balls. The possible outcomes are
  • 6:00 - 6:03
just constantly changing. The most common
  • 6:03 - 6:04
questions that I get are are the
  • 6:04 - 6:07
machines rigged and are they truly
  • 6:07 - 6:08
random that isn't as straightforward as
  • 6:08 - 6:10
you might want to think it is and we're
  • 6:10 - 6:12
going to go into more detail of that in
  • 6:12 - 6:14
the next couple videos. In this series,
  • 6:14 - 6:16
but for all intents and purposes, yes
  • 6:16 - 6:19
they are completely random. Past results
  • 6:19 - 6:21
do not have any bearing on future
  • 6:21 - 6:23
outcomes. In no way is it telling itself
  • 6:23 - 6:25
like I haven't been paying out enough, I
  • 6:25 - 6:27
need to start paying out more or the
  • 6:27 - 6:30
opposite. I just had a huge jackpot. I
  • 6:30 - 6:32
need to start paying out less to balance
  • 6:32 - 6:33
out the machines are set to pay back a
  • 6:33 - 6:35
certain percentage of the money that
  • 6:35 - 6:37
they bring in and they never deviate
  • 6:37 - 6:38
from that I know that might seem
  • 6:38 - 6:41
contradictory that they can be random
  • 6:41 - 6:43
but also have a set percentage but I
  • 6:43 - 6:45
promise it'll start to make sense after
  • 6:45 - 6:47
the next couple episodes. We're going to
  • 6:47 - 6:49
talk about the random number generator,
  • 6:49 - 6:51
and how it works what it does do and
  • 6:51 - 6:53
what it doesn't do. Don't forget to hit
  • 6:53 - 6:55
the like button and before your next
  • 6:55 - 6:57
Vegas trip, get educated. Thanks for
  • 6:57 - 7:00
    watching
