(Derek) You know, I just want to speak
  • 13:44 - 13:46
to you, our Hope Sabbath School members.
  • 13:46 - 13:47
If you missed the previous study,
  • 13:47 - 13:49
    actually Puia taught the study
  • 13:49 - 13:51
    on understanding sacrifice,
  • 13:51 - 13:53
    and that was so clear.
  • 13:53 - 13:55
You can go to our website,
  • 13:55 - 13:58
    hopetv.org/hopess, watch
  • 13:58 - 13:59
    the previous study,
  • 13:59 - 14:00
    Understanding Sacrifice,
  • 14:00 - 14:03
or go to our YouTube channel,
  • 14:03 - 14:04
and you can watch it there.
  • 14:04 - 14:08
We're building one lesson upon another,
  • 14:08 - 14:10
and you're absolutely right, this isn't
  • 14:10 - 14:13
just, "Well, I'll make it of something."
  • 14:13 - 14:17
This was a lesson about the lamb
  • 14:17 - 14:19
    that would die pointing forward
  • 14:19 - 14:20
to the Lamb of God, right?
  • 14:20 - 14:22
So, there was a glimmer of hope.
  • 14:22 - 14:24
Let's look at another glimmer of hope,
  • 14:24 - 14:28
Sophia, in Genesis 3, verse 24.
  • 14:28 - 14:29
    (Sophia) I'll be reading
  • 14:29 - 14:30
from the New King James Version:
  • 14:43 - 14:44
(Derek) Shawn, how do you think
  • 14:44 - 14:46
that was a word of hope,
  • 14:46 - 14:49
    to have cherubim guarding
  • 14:49 - 14:51
the entrance so they couldn't enter?
  • 14:51 - 14:52
    (Shawn) Well, it reminds me
  • 14:52 - 14:54
of the Ark of the Covenant,
  • 14:54 - 14:56
    which had the two cherubim,
  • 14:56 - 14:58
and what sat between the two
  • 14:58 - 15:00
cherubim but the presence of God?
  • 15:00 - 15:02
And so, I think God is still alluding
  • 15:02 - 15:05
to this reality, that, "Even though you
  • 15:05 - 15:06
    are leaving the land
  • 15:06 - 15:08
that I prepared for you, the garden
  • 15:08 - 15:09
I made for you, My presence
  • 15:09 - 15:11
is still going to dwell with you
  • 15:11 - 15:12
in a way to call you back
  • 15:12 - 15:14
    to where you belong."
  • 15:14 - 15:15
    (Derek) And you're absolutely right,
  • 15:15 - 15:17
    and after Rodney's comment
  • 15:17 - 15:18
    and Shaina's comment,
  • 15:18 - 15:19
everybody wanting to comment on that
  • 15:19 - 15:21
(that's good), we'll discover that He
  • 15:21 - 15:23
actually gives a promise about, "I
  • 15:23 - 15:26
will never leave you or forsake you."
  • 15:26 - 15:28
But let's take Rodney's comment first.
  • 15:28 - 15:30
    (Rodney) And as you mentioned
  • 15:30 - 15:31
    the word promise there, Derek,
  • 15:31 - 15:33
    I think there's a sequence here
  • 15:33 - 15:34
that leads up to what we are
  • 15:34 - 15:35
    talking about here that is
  • 15:35 - 15:37
    very, very important, and Puia
  • 15:37 - 15:41
alluded to it, which was in Genesis 3:15,
  • 15:41 - 15:43
even before Genesis 3:15, you can see
  • 15:43 - 15:45
that man, Adam and Eve, went awry,
  • 15:45 - 15:48
then God actually went to find them.
  • 15:48 - 15:50
    That's the first beautiful thing
  • 15:50 - 15:52
that probably happened before chapter 3,
  • 15:52 - 15:54
but once we enter chapter 3,
  • 15:54 - 15:56
it then speaks to Genesis 3:15,
  • 15:56 - 15:58
    which is now the promise
  • 15:58 - 16:02
of the Messiah, the One who is to come.
  • 16:02 - 16:04
And then now out of that promise,
  • 16:04 - 16:07
He provides the skin, and then He
  • 16:07 - 16:08
    also provides the cherubim
  • 16:08 - 16:10
    that remind them that He
  • 16:10 - 16:11
    will always be with them.
  • 16:11 - 16:13
I know we said earlier that it is
  • 16:13 - 16:15
a very challenging chapter, but as you
  • 16:15 - 16:18
said, Derek, there are glimmers of hope
  • 16:18 - 16:21
for not just them, but also for us.
  • 16:21 - 16:23
(Derek) And I like what Rodney
  • 16:23 - 16:25
pointed out, and then I'll come to Shaina
  • 16:25 - 16:27
    and Alex, and that is,
  • 16:27 - 16:30
in that same chapter 3 and verse 8,
  • 16:30 - 16:33
God comes looking for them in the garden.
  • 16:33 - 16:35
    And then He calls out,
  • 16:35 - 16:38
    "Adam, where are you?"
  • 16:38 - 16:40
Did He know where Adam was?
  • 16:40 - 16:43
Of course, but He's calling him
  • 16:43 - 16:48
to stay in relationship with Him. Alex.
  • 16:48 - 16:51
(Alex) I wanted to add along with that,
  • 16:51 - 16:53
    the Garden of Eden was
  • 16:53 - 16:55
    actually a sanctuary.
  • 16:55 - 16:57
You could see the Cherubim blocking
  • 16:57 - 17:01
    the entrance, which is east.
  • 17:01 - 17:02
    That's the exact same structure
  • 17:02 - 17:06
as the sanctuary, so even there
  • 17:06 - 17:10
early on, we can see that's why God
  • 17:10 - 17:12
    showed the sanctuary model
  • 17:12 - 17:15
to His people, to say, "My ultimate goal
  • 17:15 - 17:17
is to bring you back into My presence."
  • 17:17 - 17:19
    (Derek) Fantastic. And, Shaina,
  • 17:19 - 17:21
I didn't want to miss your comment, too.
  • 17:21 - 17:25
    (Shaina) So, ultimately He used
  • 17:25 - 17:27
    the cherubim to shield them
  • 17:27 - 17:28
from the garden because if we look
  • 17:28 - 17:32
at verse 22 in the same [chapter,
  • 17:32 - 17:37
Genesis 3], the Godhead, the Lord God
  • 17:37 - 17:43
    said...if I can read verse 22
    of chapter 3.
  • 17:43 - 17:44
(Derek) Genesis 3, and you'd like
  • 17:44 - 17:46
    to read which verse?
  • 17:46 - 17:48
    (Shaina) Verse 22.
  • 17:48 - 17:50
    (Derek) Verse 22, okay.
  • 17:50 - 17:51
    (Shaina) And I'll be reading
  • 17:51 - 17:54
from the New King James Version, it says:
  • 18:10 - 18:12
So, it's not that God didn't want them
  • 18:12 - 18:14
to live forever, but now they were
  • 18:14 - 18:17
in a state of being exposed.
  • 18:17 - 18:19
We mentioned that before, now they
  • 18:19 - 18:21
    were naked; they were ashamed.
  • 18:21 - 18:24
And if He allowed them to stay
  • 18:24 - 18:26
in that place and they continued to eat
  • 18:26 - 18:28
of that Tree of Life that would cause
  • 18:28 - 18:30
them to live forever, then they
  • 18:30 - 18:32
would forever be living in the state
  • 18:32 - 18:35
of nakedness, of shame, of sin.
  • 18:35 - 18:38
    And the God of love,
  • 18:38 - 18:40
who designed us to begin with, does not
  • 18:40 - 18:42
    want that for us.
  • 18:42 - 18:43
    (Derek) I struggle with that text;
  • 18:43 - 18:44
    I have to be honest.
  • 18:44 - 18:46
Maybe you can explain it to me
  • 18:46 - 18:48
because the wages of sin is death.
  • 18:48 - 18:50
So, I don't know, maybe it would have
  • 18:50 - 18:53
    just prolonged the dying longer
  • 18:53 - 18:57
by having access to that life-giving food?
  • 18:57 - 18:58
    I don't know; I guess we'll ask that
  • 18:58 - 19:00
    when we get there, too.
  • 19:00 - 19:02
But, for sure you would agree with me
  • 19:02 - 19:04
that in the garden, and I like the comment
  • 19:04 - 19:07
that Alex made about the cherubim,
  • 19:07 - 19:10
and Shawn also, that there is foreshadowed
  • 19:10 - 19:13
that God is not going to abandon us
  • 19:13 - 19:14
    because of sin.
  • 19:14 - 19:17
In fact, He wants to draw near to us.
  • 19:17 - 19:18
    Where is that text found?
  • 19:18 - 19:21
Does anyone know where He says,
  • 19:21 - 19:23
"I will never leave you or forsake you"?
  • 19:23 - 19:25
It's found in a couple of places.
  • 19:25 - 19:27
    Joshua, do you remember?
  • 19:27 - 19:29
(Joshua) In the book of Joshua.
  • 19:29 - 19:31
(Derek) We thought you would like
  • 19:31 - 19:32
    to read that because it
  • 19:32 - 19:33
    has your name on it.
  • 19:33 - 19:34
    And then it's repeated
  • 19:34 - 19:36
in the book of Hebrews, correct?
  • 19:36 - 19:37
But, Joshua, the book that bears
  • 19:37 - 19:41
your name, let's see what you read there
  • 19:41 - 19:42
    in Joshua 1, verse 5.
  • 19:42 - 19:44
And then we say, "Was that
  • 19:44 - 19:47
just for him, or is that for all of us?"
  • 19:47 - 19:49
    (Joshua) And I'll be reading
  • 19:49 - 19:50
from the New King James Version,
  • 19:50 - 19:51
    and the Bible says:
  • 20:03 - 20:04
    (Derek) So, someone says,
  • 20:04 - 20:06
    well that was for Joshua,
  • 20:06 - 20:07
    and Joshua says, "I'm glad
  • 20:07 - 20:08
    my name's Joshua, you know,
  • 20:08 - 20:10
because that would be for me, too."
  • 20:10 - 20:12
How do I know that that promise
  • 20:12 - 20:16
is not just for this leader
  • 20:16 - 20:19
of the children of Israel? Kylynda?
  • 20:19 - 20:20
    (Kylynda) I was thinking
  • 20:20 - 20:23
about multiple places this text is found,
  • 20:23 - 20:25
and I was reminded, when Jesus
  • 20:25 - 20:28
is leaving His disciples, He also gives
  • 20:28 - 20:29
    the same promise, "I won't
  • 20:29 - 20:31
    leave you or forsake you."
  • 20:31 - 20:32
    And it's really a promise
  • 20:32 - 20:35
    to all followers of Christ.
  • 20:35 - 20:37
He's saying, "As you go out in the world,
  • 20:37 - 20:38
    I am there with you."
  • 20:38 - 20:40
    (Derek) Did somebody find Hebrews?
  • 20:40 - 20:42
Yes, Shawn, how does it read?
  • 20:42 - 20:44
    It's being quoted for us,
  • 20:44 - 20:46
    not just about Joshua.
  • 20:46 - 20:48
(Shawn) Correct, and I'll be reading
  • 20:48 - 20:51
from Hebrews 13, verse 5, and this will be
  • 20:51 - 20:54
    the English Standard Version:
  • 21:02 - 21:03
    (that is, God)
  • 21:08 - 21:09
    (Derek) So, the context there
  • 21:09 - 21:13
    is learning to be content,
  • 21:13 - 21:14
    but it affects every area
  • 21:14 - 21:16
    of our lives, doesn't it?
  • 21:16 - 21:21
So, as the darkness of sin settles
  • 21:21 - 21:23
on the world, and sin and death,
  • 21:23 - 21:27
why is it an encouragement to know
  • 21:27 - 21:29
that God says, "I will never leave you
  • 21:29 - 21:31
    or forsake you"? Scott?
  • 21:31 - 21:34
(Scott) I think about Jesus' experience
  • 21:34 - 21:36
on the cross; as He was experiencing
  • 21:36 - 21:38
the weight of sin Himself, He said,
  • 21:38 - 21:39
    "My God, My God,
  • 21:39 - 21:41
    why have You forsaken Me?"
  • 21:41 - 21:44
    That's what sin does, right?
  • 21:44 - 21:46
    Sin causes that...and as we
  • 21:46 - 21:48
    go through our lives, sometimes,
  • 21:48 - 21:49
    as we're impacted by sin,
  • 21:49 - 21:51
    we feel abandoned.
  • 21:51 - 21:53
And we have to make a choice:
  • 21:53 - 21:55
Am I going to go by how I feel,
  • 21:55 - 21:57
or am I going to believe God's promise
  • 21:57 - 21:59
when He said, "I will never leave you."
  • 21:59 - 22:01
It doesn't matter if you feel
  • 22:01 - 22:02
    like God has left you or not;
  • 22:02 - 22:04
He promised, and you can take
  • 22:04 - 22:05
    that to the bank.
  • 22:05 - 22:07
    (Derek) That's an English expression,
  • 22:07 - 22:08
which means, "You can count on it,"
  • 22:08 - 22:10
by the way, if people were wondering
  • 22:10 - 22:13
what it means to take it to the bank.
  • 22:13 - 22:16
But knowing that God has promised
  • 22:16 - 22:19
to never leave us or forsake us
  • 22:19 - 22:21
    really does make a difference,
  • 22:21 - 22:23
    doesn't it? Yes, Zandile.
  • 22:23 - 22:24
(Zandile) I was going to say that it's
  • 22:24 - 22:29
a recurring concept or theme in the Bible
  • 22:29 - 22:32
where from Genesis 1, He comes to them.
  • 22:32 - 22:33
    Even though they had disobeyed,
  • 22:33 - 22:36
He shows that He cares; He looks for them.
  • 22:36 - 22:39
And throughout the Bible, God is
  • 22:39 - 22:40
still saying to us, "I will
  • 22:40 - 22:41
never leave you, and I will
  • 22:41 - 22:42
    never forsake you."
  • 22:42 - 22:44
So, if He is repeating it,
  • 22:44 - 22:46
    there should be some seriousness
  • 22:46 - 22:47
and some truth in it because He
  • 22:47 - 22:49
wouldn't be saying it if He
  • 22:49 - 22:50
    does not mean it.
  • 22:50 - 22:52
(Derek) Alright, I saw some remote hands
  • 22:52 - 22:54
over there, I think Rodney and Alex,
  • 22:54 - 22:56
and then Puia, and then we'll move on
  • 22:56 - 22:58
to look at some young people
  • 22:58 - 23:00
who were called to speak for God
  • 23:00 - 23:03
because He doesn't want anyone to think
  • 23:03 - 23:07
He's left us or forsaken us. Rodney?
  • 23:07 - 23:09
(Rodney) I think we have seen so far
  • 23:09 - 23:11
in our discussion, all the way through
  • 23:11 - 23:13
God just being with His people.
  • 23:13 - 23:15
That was the intent with Adam and Eve
  • 23:15 - 23:18
when God made the coats of skin, right,
  • 23:18 - 23:20
    or the clothing of skin.
  • 23:20 - 23:22
    In other words, wherever they
  • 23:22 - 23:23
went in the garden, they were
  • 23:23 - 23:26
    wearing clothes, so they were
  • 23:26 - 23:27
in God's clothing, if you will.
  • 23:27 - 23:29
So, wherever they went, it was
  • 23:29 - 23:31
a reminder for them, not only to cover
  • 23:31 - 23:32
their shame but also as a reminder
  • 23:32 - 23:35
to them that He's with them.
  • 23:35 - 23:37
You see it also in the desert when they
  • 23:37 - 23:42
were traveling from Egypt to Canaan.
  • 23:42 - 23:44
God said, "Make Me a sanctuary
  • 23:44 - 23:45
that I may dwell among you."
  • 23:45 - 23:46
    And so He wanted
  • 23:46 - 23:48
    to really commune with them.
  • 23:48 - 23:49
    You see when Jesus came,
  • 23:49 - 23:51
    He was with His disciples.
  • 23:51 - 23:52
    All the way through,
  • 23:52 - 23:54
even to the very last chapter
  • 23:54 - 23:55
    of the book of Revelation,
  • 23:55 - 23:57
it says, "Surely I am coming quickly."
  • 23:57 - 24:00
So, we just see a depiction
  • 24:00 - 24:02
that, no matter where or how far
  • 24:02 - 24:03
    we have gone, Jesus wants
  • 24:03 - 24:06
to have an intimate relationship with us.
  • 24:06 - 24:08
(Derek) Alright, thank you for sharing.
  • 24:08 - 24:10
Alex, I think you had your hand
  • 24:10 - 24:11
    raised, too; would you like
  • 24:11 - 24:12
    to add to that?
  • 24:12 - 24:13
(Alex) Yes, and to go with the idea
  • 24:13 - 24:15
of hope, when people have hope,
  • 24:15 - 24:17
it will help them to push through
  • 24:17 - 24:19
    even through difficult times.
  • 24:19 - 24:20
    And I just want everyone,
  • 24:20 - 24:23
whoever is watching, to put your name
  • 24:23 - 24:26
in Joshua 1:5 where God said, "As I was
  • 24:26 - 24:28
with Moses, so I will be with," Joshua,
  • 24:28 - 24:31
and, "I will be with you, too."
  • 24:31 - 24:32
    (Derek) Beautiful, I like
  • 24:32 - 24:35
    that personalizing of the text,
  • 24:35 - 24:37
    "As I was with Moses,
  • 24:37 - 24:40
I will be with...," Sophia, Nicole,
  • 24:40 - 24:42
put your name there and say,
  • 24:42 - 24:44
    "Is that really true?"
  • 24:44 - 24:46
Well, Jesus is the same yesterday,
  • 24:46 - 24:48
today and forever, so His promise
  • 24:48 - 24:52
is not just for Joshua in ancient times,
  • 24:52 - 24:54
but it's for each one of us. Puia?
  • 24:54 - 24:56
(Puia) I like what Rodney said.
  • 24:56 - 24:57
I think this is the theme
  • 24:57 - 24:59
    that we're seeing throughout Scripture,
  • 24:59 - 25:00
    the presence of God.
  • 25:00 - 25:02
You know, when humanity fell into sin,
  • 25:02 - 25:04
we can look at that from different angles,
  • 25:04 - 25:08
but one of the main things we lost
  • 25:08 - 25:10
was that direct presence of God,
  • 25:10 - 25:12
    that face-to-face relationship
  • 25:12 - 25:15
    that humanity had.
  • 25:15 - 25:18
But even in verse 24, chapter 3
  • 25:18 - 25:20
of Genesis that we read, that God
  • 25:20 - 25:21
    placed cherubim, you know,
  • 25:21 - 25:24
the word "placed" in the Hebrew language
  • 25:24 - 25:27
is the same word for "tabernacle."
  • 25:27 - 25:29
(Derek) Ah, so He "pitched" them.
  • 25:29 - 25:31
    (Puia) He pitched the cherubim,
  • 25:31 - 25:33
    like He tabernacled, He continued
  • 25:33 - 25:35
to show humanity that, "Even though
  • 25:35 - 25:37
you have fallen into sin, My presence
  • 25:37 - 25:39
    will still be here."
  • 25:39 - 25:41
We will one day be united again,
  • 25:41 - 25:43
    and that is so beautiful.
  • 25:43 - 25:44
    (Derek) It really is.
  • 25:44 - 25:47
Well, let's look at a few individuals
  • 25:47 - 25:50
who were called to be prophets.
  • 25:50 - 25:52
And you say, "Well, Derek, I'm
  • 25:52 - 25:53
not called to be a prophet,"
  • 25:53 - 25:55
but we'll actually learn some lessons
  • 25:55 - 25:58
that will help us to know God
  • 25:58 - 25:59
wants to reveal Himself to us.
  • 25:59 - 26:02
So, let's go to 1 Samuel, chapter 1.
  • 26:02 - 26:04
    Nicole, if you could read
  • 26:04 - 26:07
    verses 27 and 28.
  • 26:07 - 26:10
    And we're asking the question,
  • 26:10 - 26:12
    how did the Lord prepare
  • 26:12 - 26:14
    young Samuel to prophesy?
  • 26:14 - 26:17
    And we'll see the preparation
  • 26:17 - 26:22
actually began even before he was born.
  • 26:22 - 26:24
    (Nicole) The New International Version
  • 26:24 - 26:25
    of 1 Samuel, chapter 1,
  • 26:25 - 26:27
    verses 27 and 28, says:
  • 26:41 - 26:42
(Derek) And if you'd stay with us,
  • 26:42 - 26:44
Nicole, and read in chapter 2,
  • 26:44 - 26:47
verses 18 and 19, since you are
  • 26:47 - 26:49
also a mother, so you can understand
  • 26:49 - 26:52
    a mother's prayers as Hannah,
  • 26:52 - 26:53
    remember, that was her name,
  • 26:53 - 26:56
    is praying for this child.
  • 26:56 - 26:57
    (Nicole) And continuing
  • 26:57 - 26:59
in the New International Version, it says:
  • 27:14 - 27:15
    (Derek) Now, let's think
  • 27:15 - 27:17
back about the garden and the robe
  • 27:17 - 27:19
that was made in the garden.
  • 27:19 - 27:22
So, I want to ask a question.
  • 27:22 - 27:24
Some of you are parents, too.
  • 27:24 - 27:25
    What do you think was
  • 27:25 - 27:28
    going through Hannah's mind -
  • 27:28 - 27:30
and we've got some parents here
  • 27:30 - 27:32
on our team - what was going
  • 27:32 - 27:35
through Hannah's mind as she made
  • 27:35 - 27:38
    that covering, that robe,
  • 27:38 - 27:42
for her son, Samuel, every year?
  • 27:42 - 27:47
Anybody, what do you think? Yes, Scott.
  • 27:47 - 27:49
(Scott) I'm drawn to the description
  • 27:49 - 27:50
of his clothing, that it says
  • 27:50 - 27:52
he was wearing a linen ephod.
  • 27:52 - 27:53
    Now, we don't know exactly
  • 27:53 - 27:54
what an ephod was, but it
  • 27:54 - 27:57
had to do with priestly ministry.
  • 27:57 - 28:00
And so, Hannah has lent him to the Lord,
  • 28:00 - 28:01
and now she is clothing him
  • 28:01 - 28:04
in the trappings for his service for God,
  • 28:04 - 28:07
so she is preparing him, from a young age,
  • 28:07 - 28:10
to serve God, to minister for God.
  • 28:10 - 28:14
(Derek) Alright, in a physical sense,
  • 28:14 - 28:16
you mean, by making this robe?
  • 28:16 - 28:18
I want to know, Nicole, what was
  • 28:18 - 28:20
    going through her mind
  • 28:20 - 28:22
    while she was making...
  • 28:22 - 28:24
What was she doing while she was
  • 28:24 - 28:27
    weaving or sewing that garment?
  • 28:27 - 28:29
(Nicole) I can see her putting tears
  • 28:29 - 28:31
in that garment because her son
  • 28:31 - 28:33
is not with her, but also love, because
  • 28:33 - 28:35
she knows that her son is going to wear
  • 28:35 - 28:36
that garment and have a part of her
  • 28:36 - 28:39
with him every day that he is
    ministering to God.
  • 28:39 - 28:40
(Derek) Would someone like to add
  • 28:40 - 28:43
another word besides tears and love?
  • 28:43 - 28:44
    (Joshua) Gratitude.
  • 28:44 - 28:46
    (Derek) Gratitude. I'm looking
  • 28:46 - 28:48
    for one more word.
  • 28:48 - 28:49
    (Sophia) Joy.
  • 28:49 - 28:50
    (Kylynda) Care.
  • 28:50 - 28:52
    (Derek) How about prayer?
  • 28:52 - 28:53
Because she prayed, you told us,
  • 28:53 - 28:55
    at the beginning, right?
  • 28:55 - 28:56
    Did she stop praying?
  • 28:56 - 28:58
Do we stop praying for our children,
  • 28:58 - 29:00
those of us who have children?
  • 29:00 - 29:02
She never stops praying that he
  • 29:02 - 29:08
will be covered, that he will understand
  • 29:08 - 29:11
    the grace of God.
  • 29:11 - 29:13
And, by the way, if you read this book,
  • 29:13 - 29:15
there are some wicked things happening
  • 29:15 - 29:16
    in the temple.
  • 29:16 - 29:18
It's a miracle that this young boy
  • 29:18 - 29:21
is remaining pure and true to God.
  • 29:21 - 29:23
Well, let's pick up the story.
  • 29:23 - 29:26
Sophia, if you could take us to chapter 3
  • 29:26 - 29:29
of 1 Samuel, and we're going to look
  • 29:29 - 29:32
    at the first 10 verses.
  • 29:32 - 29:33
Now, some of you might say, "Derek,
  • 29:33 - 29:36
I know this story," but maybe you're
  • 29:36 - 29:38
going to hear this for the first time.
  • 29:38 - 29:40
    Remember, people are listening.
  • 29:40 - 29:43
And I want you not just to tell us
  • 29:43 - 29:46
what happened, but what can we learn
  • 29:46 - 29:50
for our lives today that will help us
  • 29:50 - 29:54
to prepare for the last days, okay?
  • 29:54 - 29:56
    Chapter 3, verses 1 through 10.
  • 29:56 - 29:57
    (Sophia) I'll be reading
  • 29:57 - 29:59
from the New King James Version:
  • 31:36 - 31:37
    (Derek) What do you learn
  • 31:37 - 31:38
    from this story?
  • 31:38 - 31:39
    It's a beautiful story, right?
  • 31:39 - 31:41
    What lessons do you learn?
  • 31:41 - 31:42
    I see Rodney, you're
  • 31:42 - 31:44
just kind of shaking your head.
  • 31:44 - 31:45
    There's got to be something
  • 31:45 - 31:47
    you're thinking while you're
  • 31:47 - 31:48
    shaking your head.
  • 31:48 - 31:51
    (Rodney) Derek, this story
    is unbelievable.
  • 31:51 - 31:54
    I'm just watching the progression
  • 31:54 - 31:59
    of both Samuel and Eli.
  • 31:59 - 32:04
I see Samuel, here, trying to understand
  • 32:04 - 32:06
the voice of God, because the Bible says
  • 32:06 - 32:09
there that the voice of the Lord
  • 32:09 - 32:11
    was rare in those days.
  • 32:11 - 32:13
And so, if he hears anything that is
  • 32:13 - 32:17
sounding like...I notice he goes to Eli.
  • 32:17 - 32:18
    He didn't go anywhere else;
  • 32:18 - 32:20
he went to Eli, so he's expecting
  • 32:20 - 32:21
that Eli would have been the person.
  • 32:21 - 32:24
But I just like how Samuel is
  • 32:24 - 32:26
    following the instructions of Eli.
  • 32:26 - 32:27
    Now, Eli himself also went
  • 32:27 - 32:29
    through a progression.
  • 32:29 - 32:30
    If you notice, Eli himself
  • 32:30 - 32:32
didn't even know, but the third time
  • 32:32 - 32:34
    he recognized that God was
  • 32:34 - 32:36
    speaking to this young man
  • 32:36 - 32:37
    and instructed him accordingly.
  • 32:37 - 32:41
So, I can see growth and development
  • 32:41 - 32:42
    in these two characters
  • 32:42 - 32:44
    being displayed here,
  • 32:44 - 32:45
and so it is with us.
  • 32:45 - 32:48
God wants us to grow with Him as well.
  • 32:48 - 32:49
(Derek) Okay, I see some hands
  • 32:49 - 32:53
in the studio, and then I see Alex,
  • 32:53 - 32:55
    one of our remotes. Nicole.
  • 32:55 - 32:56
    (Nicole) I'm taken
  • 32:56 - 32:59
by the obedience of this child.
  • 32:59 - 33:01
I have children, and it's hard
  • 33:01 - 33:02
to get them, sometimes, to listen
  • 33:02 - 33:04
    to what you're saying.
  • 33:04 - 33:07
But in this case, it's refreshing to see
  • 33:07 - 33:09
that this child is able to be obedient.
  • 33:09 - 33:11
And when Eli tells him what to do,
  • 33:11 - 33:13
he does it; that's from the prayer
  • 33:13 - 33:16
of his mom saying that this child
  • 33:16 - 33:18
is going to be raised and do
  • 33:18 - 33:19
    the service of God.
  • 33:19 - 33:20
And so, that is important for us
  • 33:20 - 33:22
as parents to know, we have
  • 33:22 - 33:23
to pray for our children to be able
  • 33:23 - 33:24
    to hear God's voice.
  • 33:24 - 33:26
(Derek) So, Samuel, this little boy, is
  • 33:26 - 33:29
covered in prayer in more ways than one.
  • 33:29 - 33:31
He's got the little robe, right,
  • 33:31 - 33:35
but he's also covered in prayer. Alex?
  • 33:35 - 33:37
(Alex) And it's powerful, and if I
  • 33:37 - 33:39
were to sum this up, for me,
  • 33:39 - 33:41
it is the fact that God does not call
  • 33:41 - 33:43
    the qualified, but he
  • 33:43 - 33:45
    qualifies the called.
  • 33:45 - 33:47
This is a young boy, but as long as you're
  • 33:47 - 33:48
    willing, whoever you are,
  • 33:48 - 33:50
    or how old you are, doesn't matter;
  • 33:50 - 33:52
as long as you say, "Here am I, Lord,"
  • 33:52 - 33:54
    He will work through you.
  • 33:54 - 33:55
    (Derek) So, you don't have
  • 33:55 - 33:57
to be the high priest like Eli.
  • 33:57 - 34:02
    Tragically, Eli's not listening,
  • 34:02 - 34:04
and, "The word of the Lord
  • 34:04 - 34:05
    was rare in those days."
  • 34:05 - 34:07
    A lesson you learned, Scott.
  • 34:07 - 34:10
(Scott) What really struck me is
  • 34:10 - 34:14
that it says that Samuel did not yet know
  • 34:14 - 34:15
    the voice of the Lord.
  • 34:15 - 34:19
And what stood out to me is that God
  • 34:19 - 34:24
calls us before we are in a position
  • 34:24 - 34:25
    to reach out to Him.
  • 34:25 - 34:28
We are not the one who initiates.
  • 34:28 - 34:29
    Samuel didn't start this up.
  • 34:29 - 34:32
God was the One who took the initiative,
  • 34:32 - 34:33
    and He initiated this call,
  • 34:33 - 34:35
    and He spoke to him.
  • 34:35 - 34:37
(Derek) Do we have any idea
  • 34:37 - 34:39
how old Samuel was at this time?
  • 34:39 - 34:43
    Does anybody know?
  • 34:43 - 34:45
Shawn, you've got a couple of little boys.
  • 34:45 - 34:48
Can you imagine the Lord God saying,
  • 34:48 - 34:49
    "I'm going to choose
  • 34:49 - 34:51
    little Michael," or Matthew?
  • 34:51 - 34:52
    (Shawn) That'd be amazing.
  • 34:52 - 34:54
    (Derek) Wouldn't it be?!
  • 34:54 - 34:56
But I appreciate what you said, Alex,
  • 34:56 - 34:58
and I would say to you,
  • 34:58 - 34:59
    our Hope Sabbath School family,
  • 34:59 - 35:02
God wants to speak to us,
  • 35:02 - 35:03
    if we're willing to listen.
  • 35:03 - 35:06
Could we also as parents bathe
  • 35:06 - 35:08
our children in prayer so that when God
  • 35:08 - 35:11
    speaks to them, they'll listen,
  • 35:11 - 35:12
    they'll recognize the voice,
  • 35:12 - 35:13
    and they'll listen.
  • 35:13 - 35:14
    It's quite amazing.
  • 35:14 - 35:16
    Sophia, you had a thought.
  • 35:16 - 35:18
(Sophia) It says that He came and stood,
  • 35:18 - 35:20
He came to him just like He came
  • 35:20 - 35:21
    to Adam and Eve in the garden;
  • 35:21 - 35:23
    He found them.
  • 35:23 - 35:24
    (Derek) I noticed that also,
  • 35:24 - 35:26
    that in the first [three],
  • 35:26 - 35:28
    it just says, "He called."
  • 35:28 - 35:29
    Did you notice that?
  • 35:29 - 35:31
But the [fourth] time, it says,
    "The Lord..."?
  • 35:31 - 35:35
    (Derek, Team) "...came and stood"
  • 35:35 - 35:37
(Derek) ...and called the [fourth] time.
  • 35:37 - 35:39
So, what lesson can we learn
  • 35:39 - 35:40
    for our lives from this?
  • 35:40 - 35:44
We're talking about a story here
  • 35:44 - 35:46
    for the last days.
  • 35:46 - 35:48
What lesson, Puia, could I learn
  • 35:48 - 35:48
    from this story?
  • 35:48 - 35:50
You say, "What a great story."
  • 35:50 - 35:52
    What could I learn?
  • 35:52 - 35:54
(Puia) I think God, even to this day
  • 35:54 - 35:56
and in the last days, wants to continue
  • 35:56 - 35:59
to communicate with us, so I think
  • 35:59 - 36:02
the lesson, here, is to be willing,
  • 36:02 - 36:04
as Alex pointed out, to have
  • 36:04 - 36:07
a willing heart to say, "Here I am, Lord,"
  • 36:07 - 36:08
    "Here I am, send me,"
  • 36:08 - 36:10
    "Here I am, I'm listening."
  • 36:10 - 36:12
And I really love how Samuel responded,
  • 36:12 - 36:14
    "Speak, Your servant hears."
  • 36:14 - 36:15
I think the lesson is there
  • 36:15 - 36:18
for us to continue to listen
  • 36:18 - 36:19
    to the voice of God.
  • 36:19 - 36:21
Today, the Bible is the Word of God,
  • 36:21 - 36:23
that we can listen to His Word every day,
  • 36:23 - 36:26
and God will speak to our hearts.
  • 36:26 - 36:28
(Derek) Let's look at another prophet.
  • 36:28 - 36:29
    Kylynda, if you'd take us
  • 36:29 - 36:31
    to Isaiah the prophet.
  • 36:31 - 36:35
Now, this is several centuries later.
  • 36:35 - 36:39
This is about the eighth century B.C.,
  • 36:39 - 36:41
    and God calls another prophet
  • 36:41 - 36:43
named Isaiah, and if you could read
  • 36:43 - 36:47
for us chapter 6 of the book -
  • 36:47 - 36:49
    because this is where Isaiah
  • 36:49 - 36:51
actually tells us about his call -
  • 36:51 - 36:53
    verses 1 through 5.
  • 36:53 - 36:55
    (Kylynda) I'll be reading
  • 36:55 - 36:57
from the New King James Version:
  • 37:44 - 37:45
    (Derek) What do you think
  • 37:45 - 37:47
    about Isaiah's reaction
  • 37:47 - 37:49
    to this revelation?
  • 37:49 - 37:53
Now, again, you know he obviously had
  • 37:53 - 37:56
    a relationship with God, right,
  • 37:56 - 37:59
though I do think, Scott, you pointed out
  • 37:59 - 38:00
that we don't have to have
  • 38:00 - 38:01
    everything together before God
  • 38:01 - 38:02
    might come and call us.
  • 38:02 - 38:05
But he's a man seeking God,
  • 38:05 - 38:07
and yet this is a totally...
  • 38:07 - 38:10
    What would you say?
  • 38:10 - 38:12
    A more overwhelming revelation
  • 38:12 - 38:14
of God's presence and truth to him.
  • 38:14 - 38:15
    What do you think
  • 38:15 - 38:17
    about his reaction, Joshua?
  • 38:17 - 38:19
(Joshua) To me, he seemed intimidated
  • 38:19 - 38:21
    and unworthy; he felt
  • 38:21 - 38:22
    as though he was unworthy.
  • 38:22 - 38:23
    (Derek) Okay.
  • 38:23 - 38:25
(Joshua) I know the following Scriptures
  • 38:25 - 38:28
seem to clarify that and what God did
  • 38:28 - 38:29
    in order to prepare...
  • 38:29 - 38:30
    (Derek) Okay, let's unpack
  • 38:30 - 38:35
the "intimidated"; that implies some fear?
  • 38:35 - 38:38
Do you think there was some fear there?
  • 38:38 - 38:40
(Joshua) The vision of what he
  • 38:40 - 38:42
    was seeing? Yeah.
  • 38:42 - 38:44
(Derek) You know, it would be nice
  • 38:44 - 38:44
    to think no fear,
  • 38:44 - 38:47
but any time even holy angels showed up,
  • 38:47 - 38:51
they had to say, "Fear not," right?
  • 38:51 - 38:53
"Fear not, I bring you glad tidings..."
  • 38:53 - 38:53
    "Fear not," why?
  • 38:53 - 38:56
    Because the glory of God
  • 38:56 - 38:59
    is really overwhelming
  • 38:59 - 39:02
to sinful human beings. Yes, Puia.
  • 39:02 - 39:04
(Puia) I think this is a common theme
  • 39:04 - 39:05
    we see in the Bible.
  • 39:05 - 39:07
Whenever someone gets close to God,
  • 39:07 - 39:10
they begin to see their own sinfulness.
  • 39:10 - 39:12
You know, the closer you are
  • 39:12 - 39:14
drawn to God, the more you
  • 39:14 - 39:16
    see your failures.
  • 39:16 - 39:17
And yet, that's where we see
  • 39:17 - 39:20
the grace of God coming through also.
  • 39:20 - 39:21
(Derek) You speak about grace, Puia.
  • 39:21 - 39:23
I'd like you to read on, verses 6 and 7
  • 39:23 - 39:25
    of the same chapter.
  • 39:25 - 39:26
    The story doesn't end there,
  • 39:26 - 39:28
"Woe is me, I'm done, bye."
  • 39:28 - 39:31
    Fortunately, the prophet continues
  • 39:31 - 39:35
to record the story, and what do we learn?
  • 39:35 - 39:36
    (Puia) And I'll be reading
  • 39:36 - 39:38
from the New King James Version,
  • 39:38 - 39:40
    Isaiah 6, verses 6 to 8:
  • 39:59 - 40:01
(Derek) Oh, hold verse 8; we're going
  • 40:01 - 40:03
going to read that in just a minute, okay?
  • 40:03 - 40:07
So, we've got a hot coal coming
  • 40:07 - 40:09
    from an altar; there's
  • 40:09 - 40:12
some symbolism here, what is that?
  • 40:12 - 40:13
    (Joshua) Purification.
  • 40:13 - 40:16
(Derek) Purification, and what's the altar
  • 40:16 - 40:18
    it's coming from?
  • 40:18 - 40:21
It kind of reminds us of...?
  • 40:21 - 40:22
    (Team) Burnt offering.
  • 40:22 - 40:28
(Derek) Burnt offering, of the sanctuary.
  • 40:28 - 40:30
    Does anybody have an idea?
  • 40:30 - 40:34
Yes, Rodney, you're going to tell us
  • 40:34 - 40:36
where this burning coal came from,
  • 40:36 - 40:39
    an altar of some kind.
  • 40:39 - 40:41
(Rodney) Yes, there's an intimation here
  • 40:41 - 40:42
that it is from the altar of incense
  • 40:42 - 40:44
    where there is prayer,
  • 40:44 - 40:46
    and back to Joshua's point
  • 40:46 - 40:49
    around purification that takes place.
  • 40:49 - 40:51
It really just is a great symbolism
  • 40:51 - 40:55
    that indicates that, "Well,
  • 40:55 - 40:57
    you're now ready."
  • 40:57 - 40:58
God is saying, "I am purifying you
  • 40:58 - 41:00
of your sin, and now you are ready
  • 41:00 - 41:03
to represent Me to My people."
  • 41:03 - 41:05
    (Derek) So, heavenly sanctuary, right,
  • 41:05 - 41:08
    or earthly sanctuary - no.
  • 41:08 - 41:10
    It's heavenly sanctuary
  • 41:10 - 41:12
this is coming from; it's a symbol.
  • 41:12 - 41:14
And, Puia, you wanted to read on,
  • 41:14 - 41:16
and we want you to read it for us,
  • 41:16 - 41:20
    because what options does
  • 41:20 - 41:25
    this young man, Isaiah, have
    at this point?
  • 41:25 - 41:27
    What are his options?
  • 41:27 - 41:28
    (Puia) Say no to God.
  • 41:28 - 41:29
    (Derek) He could say no.
  • 41:29 - 41:30
    He could say, "This
  • 41:30 - 41:34
    would be very difficult."
  • 41:34 - 41:35
    "They've killed prophets before,
  • 41:35 - 41:39
    and they'll kill prophets later.
  • 41:39 - 41:41
    They might even kill me."
  • 41:41 - 41:44
Or, he says...let's see how he responds
  • 41:44 - 41:47
in Isaiah 6 and verse 8.
  • 41:47 - 41:48
(Puia) And I will be reading
  • 41:48 - 41:50
from the New King James Version:
  • 42:01 - 42:03
    (Derek) So, we're not called
  • 42:03 - 42:03
    to be prophets.
  • 42:03 - 42:05
Shaina, I'm going to ask you
  • 42:05 - 42:06
a question in just a minute here,
  • 42:06 - 42:08
    because when we're called
  • 42:08 - 42:10
even to be on Hope Sabbath School,
  • 42:10 - 42:12
right - we're sharing the Word of God
  • 42:12 - 42:14
with the world - it would be easy
  • 42:14 - 42:17
for us to go, "I don't think so.
  • 42:17 - 42:19
Why don't You call someone else
  • 42:19 - 42:23
    who's more...," more what?
  • 42:23 - 42:24
    (Team) Qualified.
  • 42:24 - 42:27
(Derek) Qualified or talented or whatever.
  • 42:27 - 42:34
Shaina, when you joined the team,
  • 42:34 - 42:36
I don't think it was just my wife
  • 42:36 - 42:38
who asked you; I think God
  • 42:38 - 42:39
    was inviting you, and you've
  • 42:39 - 42:41
    been a great blessing
  • 42:41 - 42:44
to the Hope Sabbath School team.
  • 42:44 - 42:45
How did God interact with you
  • 42:45 - 42:49
    when that invitation came?
  • 42:49 - 42:51
(Shaina) Well, I had to respond
  • 42:51 - 42:55
positively to His call as well,
  • 42:55 - 42:59
and I found that in reading His Word
  • 42:59 - 43:01
and spending more time in His Word
  • 43:01 - 43:04
and in communicating, I felt strengthened
  • 43:04 - 43:06
    and more equipped.
  • 43:06 - 43:08
And as I continued to communicate
  • 43:08 - 43:11
    with Him, the initial fear,
  • 43:11 - 43:15
because to be honest, I used to film
  • 43:15 - 43:17
in the studio regularly when I lived
  • 43:17 - 43:22
in the area, and in my brain,
  • 43:22 - 43:24
sitting there in the studio was like,
  • 43:24 - 43:27
    "Oh, these cameras; I'm being
  • 43:27 - 43:28
    viewed by the world."
  • 43:28 - 43:30
It was kind of an intimidating feeling,
  • 43:30 - 43:32
but as I said, as time went on,
  • 43:32 - 43:35
and I kept communicating with Him,
  • 43:35 - 43:37
and also being surrounded by believers
  • 43:37 - 43:43
who were equipped by Him as well,
  • 43:43 - 43:46
it started to become natural to me.
  • 43:46 - 43:47
And so, it's like, as we continue
  • 43:47 - 43:49
    to communicate with Him
  • 43:49 - 43:51
and spend time in His Word,
  • 43:51 - 43:52
He will fuel us with the strength
  • 43:52 - 43:54
that we need in order to do
  • 43:54 - 43:55
what He called us to do.
  • 43:55 - 43:57
(Derek) And I want you to stay with us,
  • 43:57 - 43:59
    Shaina, because some
  • 43:59 - 44:01
of our Hope Sabbath School family
  • 44:01 - 44:04
know that you faced a great crisis
  • 44:04 - 44:06
when you had an accident some years ago.
  • 44:06 - 44:09
Tell us about that, and that
  • 44:09 - 44:12
might have been a great way out,
  • 44:12 - 44:14
to say, "Well, I'm going through all
  • 44:14 - 44:15
of this difficulty; I don't think
  • 44:15 - 44:17
    I can do this anymore."
  • 44:17 - 44:20
And yet, God called you to continue.
  • 44:20 - 44:21
    Talk to us about that.
  • 44:21 - 44:24
(Shaina) It was about four years ago
  • 44:24 - 44:26
    I underwent the greatest tragedy
  • 44:26 - 44:29
    of my life so far.
  • 44:29 - 44:31
I was in a major car accident,
  • 44:31 - 44:34
was on life support for two days,
  • 44:34 - 44:37
and after I got off life support
  • 44:37 - 44:39
    had short-term memory loss.
  • 44:39 - 44:42
So, meaning I would most likely be
  • 44:42 - 44:45
repeating the same things I said
  • 44:45 - 44:49
30 seconds ago in this conversation.
  • 44:49 - 44:50
Lots of prayers were sent up
  • 44:50 - 44:54
around the world for me, and I remember
  • 44:54 - 44:57
    Pastor Derek's wife reaching
  • 44:57 - 44:59
back out to me after I felt better.
  • 44:59 - 45:03
And I was like, "I cannot not do this,
  • 45:03 - 45:09
because look at what He has done for me."
  • 45:09 - 45:11
I didn't have to have my memory restored.
  • 45:11 - 45:13
I didn't have to be walking.
  • 45:13 - 45:18
    I didn't have to look
  • 45:18 - 45:22
like nothing happened to me basically.
  • 45:22 - 45:24
And people look at me today,
  • 45:24 - 45:25
and they would never be able
  • 45:25 - 45:28
to tell that I was in that state.
  • 45:28 - 45:35
And so, this is just like my gratitude,
  • 45:35 - 45:36
    to say, "Thank You, God.
  • 45:36 - 45:40
You saved me from that physical death,
  • 45:40 - 45:43
    and ultimately the spiritual death,"
  • 45:43 - 45:44
    and it's like I can't...
  • 45:44 - 45:46
I don't even know if this is
  • 45:46 - 45:49
    enough to say thanks.
  • 45:49 - 45:53
And so, it's very little that I can do
  • 45:53 - 45:55
to say thanks, and He continues
  • 45:55 - 46:01
to strengthen and equip me to do the work.
  • 46:01 - 46:02
    (Derek) Thank you so much.
  • 46:02 - 46:04
    It's a powerful testimony.
  • 46:04 - 46:06
Thank you so much for sharing it.
  • 46:06 - 46:08
And I guess, you say, "Well, Samuel,
  • 46:08 - 46:09
that was like a long time ago."
  • 46:09 - 46:12
Or, "Isaiah, that was a long time ago."
  • 46:12 - 46:14
But we have a choice to make.
  • 46:14 - 46:19
And Shaina said, "Here am I, use me,"
  • 46:19 - 46:20
    right, "Use me."
  • 46:20 - 46:22
Oh, but Satan comes, and, I mean,
  • 46:22 - 46:23
we know God didn't cause the accident.
  • 46:23 - 46:25
    You say, "Well, it was
  • 46:25 - 46:26
    just someone's driving."
  • 46:26 - 46:28
    But, ultimately the enemy is
  • 46:28 - 46:30
behind the chaos of this world.
  • 46:30 - 46:33
But God says, "We're not done."
  • 46:33 - 46:35
You know, the cherubim are still there,
  • 46:35 - 46:36
    right, "My presence between them."
  • 46:36 - 46:38
    "I've still got you covered."
  • 46:38 - 46:43
    And Shaina's testimony today
  • 46:43 - 46:45
    will be used by God
  • 46:45 - 46:47
to impact people around the world.
  • 46:47 - 46:50
    Well, there's another young person
  • 46:50 - 46:51
    that the Lord called;
  • 46:51 - 46:53
    his name was Jeremiah.
  • 46:53 - 46:55
And, Alex, I'm going to ask you,
  • 46:55 - 46:57
you're a young man, God called you,
  • 46:57 - 46:59
and by the way, I'm going to give you
  • 46:59 - 47:01
an opportunity to share a little
  • 47:01 - 47:03
    of your testimony, too.
  • 47:03 - 47:05
but I would like you to read the text
  • 47:05 - 47:06
for us first, if you would,
  • 47:06 - 47:09
    from Jeremiah, chapter 1,
  • 47:09 - 47:11
    verses 4 through 10.
  • 47:11 - 47:13
(Alex) Okay, and I'll be reading
  • 47:13 - 47:15
    from the New King James,
  • 47:15 - 47:17
and starting at verse 4, it says:
  • 48:16 - 48:18
    (Derek) Stay with us, Alex,
  • 48:18 - 48:20
because I want to give you an opportunity.
  • 48:20 - 48:23
You actually were called by God
  • 48:23 - 48:25
    as a young man, too,
  • 48:25 - 48:27
and maybe Hope Sabbath School people
  • 48:27 - 48:29
watching go, "Well, he probably grew up,
  • 48:29 - 48:30
    you know, a perfect child
  • 48:30 - 48:32
    and never had any challenges,
  • 48:32 - 48:34
    and he doesn't understand."
  • 48:34 - 48:36
But share with me a little,
  • 48:36 - 48:38
and with our Hope Sabbath School family,
  • 48:38 - 48:39
    a little of your testimony.
  • 48:39 - 48:41
I remember some of the things
  • 48:41 - 48:42
    that you were involved with
  • 48:42 - 48:45
    and how God literally turned

    your life around.

And He's called you now to proclaim
  • 48:49 - 48:51
    to the nations the truth
  • 48:51 - 48:54
    about His immeasurable love.
  • 48:54 - 48:58
(Alex) Yes, and it really touches me
  • 48:58 - 48:59
whenever I look back, because I
  • 48:59 - 49:02
really don't see myself whenever I share,
  • 49:02 - 49:04
and it's like, "That's not me."
  • 49:04 - 49:07
But that was me before, and, no,
  • 49:07 - 49:10
I didn't grow up fearing the Lord.
  • 49:10 - 49:14
    I had friends that I shouldn't
  • 49:14 - 49:15
    have been hanging around with.
  • 49:15 - 49:17
    I had done things that I shouldn't
  • 49:17 - 49:18
    have been doing.
  • 49:18 - 49:22
    I was mostly, unfortunately,
  • 49:22 - 49:26
into a lot of violent sports,
  • 49:26 - 49:29
and because of that, it really numbed me
  • 49:29 - 49:32
    into not caring for people,
  • 49:32 - 49:33
not caring for how people think,
  • 49:33 - 49:36
how people feel, what people say,
  • 49:36 - 49:38
and I had an anger problem.
  • 49:38 - 49:40
    But I remember the Lord
  • 49:40 - 49:41
    really convicting me
  • 49:41 - 49:43
and drawing me out of it.
  • 49:43 - 49:44
And one of the ways - because before I
  • 49:44 - 49:48
didn't believe in God - but one
    of the ways
  • 49:48 - 49:51
He revealed to me that He was real
  • 49:51 - 49:53
    was through Bible prophecy.
  • 49:53 - 49:55
    I couldn't deny it, and I knew
  • 49:55 - 49:57
that I had to accept it.
  • 49:57 - 49:59
And that really led me to the Savior.
  • 49:59 - 50:01
And really looking at the cross
  • 50:01 - 50:04
and seeing that that was real,
  • 50:04 - 50:06
    that really broke my heart.
  • 50:06 - 50:09
That pierced my heart, and it led me
  • 50:09 - 50:11
to see that I needed to change.
  • 50:11 - 50:14
And God, out of mercy, called me
  • 50:14 - 50:15
    out of that world.
  • 50:15 - 50:19
I was stuck in a very embarrassing
    and hard time,
  • 50:19 - 50:21
and I had to call out to God
  • 50:21 - 50:23
and say, "Lord, I don't know
  • 50:23 - 50:24
    what You want from me,
  • 50:24 - 50:26
but now I want to give You my all.
  • 50:26 - 50:28
And I don't know the future,
  • 50:28 - 50:29
but I want to give You my all."
  • 50:29 - 50:32
And He called me out; He led me,
  • 50:32 - 50:34
He guided me, and I saw Him
  • 50:34 - 50:37
leading me into spreading His Word.
  • 50:37 - 50:39
And I've loved it ever since,
  • 50:39 - 50:41
and as I study His Word,
  • 50:41 - 50:43
He not only sanctified my lips
  • 50:43 - 50:45
but my mind, my heart, my actions
  • 50:45 - 50:47
    to where, when people hear
  • 50:47 - 50:49
    of my testimony, they say,
  • 50:49 - 50:50
"You don't look like that person
  • 50:50 - 50:53
    that belongs in the streets
  • 50:53 - 50:54
    or speaks that way."
  • 50:54 - 50:57
But, God is merciful, and I
  • 50:57 - 50:59
just praise God that His glory
  • 50:59 - 51:01
may be shown in my life.
  • 51:01 - 51:02
    (Derek, Team) Amen!
  • 51:02 - 51:04
    (Derek) Amen. I remember Alex
  • 51:04 - 51:05
    sharing with me.
  • 51:05 - 51:07
It was actually in the middle
  • 51:07 - 51:09
of a mixed martial arts fight
  • 51:09 - 51:12
where he was actually really fighting
  • 51:12 - 51:15
for his life, that he heard
  • 51:15 - 51:16
    the Lord speak to him.
  • 51:16 - 51:19
    Alex, I'm remembering this story
  • 51:19 - 51:22
and how God delivered him through that.
  • 51:22 - 51:24
He actually knocked the person out,
  • 51:24 - 51:26
and people thought, "Wow, now he's
  • 51:26 - 51:27
    really going to be famous
  • 51:27 - 51:29
    and go into a career
  • 51:29 - 51:31
    and make lots of money."
  • 51:31 - 51:33
But that day, he made the decision
  • 51:33 - 51:35
    that he was finished
  • 51:35 - 51:38
    with that violent activity.
  • 51:38 - 51:40
And so, God's turned him into a warrior
  • 51:40 - 51:42
    for the Kingdom of Heaven.
  • 51:42 - 51:44
Someone ought to say, "Praise God."
  • 51:44 - 51:46
    You say, "That's a miracle
  • 51:46 - 51:47
    of God's grace."
  • 51:47 - 51:48
Now, I need to take us,
  • 51:48 - 51:50
    to wrap up the story...
  • 51:50 - 51:53
I know you want to share, but one
  • 51:53 - 51:57
of the things I noticed as Alex
  • 51:57 - 52:01
was sharing was a spirit of humility.
  • 52:01 - 52:03
    Did you notice that?
  • 52:03 - 52:06
I noticed it also with Shaina.
  • 52:06 - 52:08
And I want to just speak
  • 52:08 - 52:09
    to you now and speak
  • 52:09 - 52:12
to our Hope Sabbath School family
  • 52:12 - 52:14
around the world, when God calls us,
  • 52:14 - 52:17
He may not call you to be a prophet
  • 52:17 - 52:20
    who speaks of the future.
  • 52:20 - 52:23
Alex is a pastor now, a pastor!
  • 52:23 - 52:25
    Someone say, "Praise God!"
  • 52:25 - 52:26
    He's a pastor now.
  • 52:26 - 52:32
But, to stay humble when we see
  • 52:32 - 52:34
    God work in miraculous ways
  • 52:34 - 52:36
    (Rodney, I see your hand),
  • 52:36 - 52:40
so that all of the glory is deflected
  • 52:40 - 52:43
to God and not to us,
  • 52:43 - 52:44
    because a testimony...
  • 52:44 - 52:46
    Remember what Alex said?
  • 52:46 - 52:47
He shares his testimony, and people
  • 52:47 - 52:51
are like, "Is that the same person
  • 52:51 - 52:52
    that I'm seeing here
  • 52:52 - 52:55
    testifying about God?"
  • 52:55 - 52:57
How do we stay humble, Rodney,
  • 52:57 - 53:01
    when we're prophesying
  • 53:01 - 53:05
of what God has done in our lives?
  • 53:05 - 53:07
(Rodney) One of the things I observed
  • 53:07 - 53:09
throughout our study, as we read
  • 53:09 - 53:12
    the Scripture about Isaiah, Jeremiah,
  • 53:12 - 53:15
    we listen to Shaina's story,
  • 53:15 - 53:18
    we listen to Alex's story,
  • 53:18 - 53:22
I realize that God has a unique way
  • 53:22 - 53:24
    of getting to each person.
  • 53:24 - 53:27
So, if you notice that their testimonies
  • 53:27 - 53:30
are not the same, but the end goal
  • 53:30 - 53:31
    is the same, which is
  • 53:31 - 53:32
    to draw closer to Jesus.
  • 53:32 - 53:35
And it is very, very important
  • 53:35 - 53:39
for all of us to remain in Jesus
  • 53:39 - 53:42
so that we can remain humble
  • 53:42 - 53:45
because if we don't, we will go awry.
  • 53:45 - 53:49
We will be off track, and so then we
  • 53:49 - 53:51
start to draw the attention to ourselves
  • 53:51 - 53:53
    rather than Jesus.
  • 53:53 - 53:55
So, in order to attain that, we have
  • 53:55 - 53:58
to keep close to Him so that He
  • 53:58 - 53:59
    can keep us aligned.
  • 53:59 - 54:02
(Derek) You know, one of the pitfalls
  • 54:02 - 54:09
that Lucifer fell into was exalting self.
  • 54:09 - 54:11
"I will," "I will,' "I will," if you read
  • 54:11 - 54:14
in Isaiah, chapter 14, exalting self.
  • 54:14 - 54:17
But the faithful servant of God
  • 54:17 - 54:19
is always deflecting all of the praise
  • 54:19 - 54:20
    and glory to God.
  • 54:20 - 54:23
Now, I want to close with this thought.
  • 54:23 - 54:26
The Apostle Paul said, "God did something
  • 54:26 - 54:27
to me to keep me humble."
  • 54:27 - 54:29
I mean, he was talented, well educated,
  • 54:29 - 54:32
a great orator, but he said, "God allowed
  • 54:32 - 54:35
a thorn in the flesh to come to me."
  • 54:35 - 54:37
    It's in 2 Corinthians; we don't need
  • 54:37 - 54:39
to read it, but you say, "What was that?"
  • 54:39 - 54:42
    It doesn't really matter.
  • 54:42 - 54:43
Some say, "I think it was
  • 54:43 - 54:44
    his poor eyesight."
  • 54:44 - 54:51
But has God taught any of you,
  • 54:51 - 54:53
    reminded you, of the need
  • 54:53 - 54:54
    to stay humble before Him
  • 54:54 - 54:56
by a thorn in your flesh,
  • 54:56 - 55:01
    a challenge that you have?
  • 55:01 - 55:02
    I see several hands.
  • 55:02 - 55:05
    Anybody want to testify?
  • 55:05 - 55:08
    Nicole, God sometimes allows things
  • 55:08 - 55:10
to come to us (He doesn't cause them)
  • 55:10 - 55:12
    to keep [Him] saying,
  • 55:12 - 55:15
    "Just trust Me completely, Nicole."
  • 55:15 - 55:17
How has He done that for you?
  • 55:17 - 55:18
    (Nicole) Well, He's done it
  • 55:18 - 55:21
a few times for me, but I can remember
  • 55:21 - 55:22
    distinctly when I was applying
  • 55:22 - 55:24
for medical school I did not do well
  • 55:24 - 55:26
    on the entrance exams.
  • 55:26 - 55:28
And in my mind, I thought, "I have this.
  • 55:28 - 55:29
    I've done well in college.
  • 55:29 - 55:32
    This is nothing for me."
  • 55:32 - 55:34
And it reminded me that I have
  • 55:34 - 55:36
to look to God and be doing this
  • 55:36 - 55:39
for His glory and not for my own glory.
  • 55:39 - 55:40
And so, I had to step back, take a look
  • 55:40 - 55:43
at what my intentions were, and once I
  • 55:43 - 55:47
really dedicated my service to God,

He then said, "Okay, I'm ready
  • 55:48 - 55:50
for you now to go to this next step."
  • 55:50 - 55:53
And I ended up doing well on my exams
    and getting into medical school,
  • 55:53 - 55:55
but I had to go through a challenging time
  • 55:55 - 55:59
