Decorative Painting: Flower Cluster

  • 0:01 - 0:04
I want to make sure that I put some
  • 0:04 - 0:07
    blending gel on my brush
  • 0:08 - 0:10
    as I'm adding the colors.
  • 0:13 - 0:14
I'm going to start with the Turner's
  • 0:14 - 0:19
    Yellow and the Poetry Green.
  • 0:22 - 0:24
You can see my brush I have one color on
  • 0:24 - 0:28
one side and one on the other. I'm just
  • 0:28 - 0:33
going to approach the paper and just do a
  • 0:33 - 0:37
random slip slap with the paint.
  • 0:38 - 0:40
I'm going to go back into my other colors
  • 0:41 - 0:44
where I had the Turner's Yellow I will
  • 0:44 - 0:48
dip into the Vintage Orange, and where I
  • 0:48 - 0:52
had the green I will dip into the Autumn
  • 0:52 - 0:55
Leaves. I'm not cleaning my brush in
  • 0:55 - 1:00
between. I'm just dipping and just
  • 1:00 - 1:05
randomly slapping. I'm also going back in
  • 1:05 - 1:08
occasionally and dipping into the blending
  • 1:08 - 1:13
gel just so that I make sure the palette
  • 1:13 - 1:16
    stays moist underneath,
  • 1:16 - 1:18
until I get ready to do the
  • 1:20 - 1:22
petals with the Rose White. I want a
  • 1:22 - 1:27
little bit more green over in this corner.
  • 1:27 - 1:30
Okay, I'm finished with this brush, this
  • 1:30 - 1:33
was a 1 inch flat Plaid one stroke brush.
  • 1:33 - 1:38
Now I'm going to be using a Filbert brush,
  • 1:38 - 1:43
this is the 1/2 inch Plaid one stroke
  • 1:43 - 1:47
Filbert. I'm going to moisten it a little
  • 1:47 - 1:50
bit and then dry it on a paper towel some.
  • 1:50 - 1:55
Now, first, I'm dipping it into the
  • 1:55 - 1:59
blending gel, then I'm dipping it directly
  • 1:59 - 2:02
into my Rose White. So, it is fully loaded
  • 2:02 - 2:07
here with just the Rose White, but as you
  • 2:07 - 2:10
can see, as I go to make my petals, it
  • 2:10 - 2:18
will pull in the colors from underneath.
  • 2:18 - 2:22
I'm starting flat and pulling up to chisel
  • 2:22 - 2:24
as I come to the middle of the flower.
  • 2:25 - 2:30
Flat, pull to chisel. You can make either
  • 2:30 - 2:34
4 or 5 petal flowers. This looks a little
  • 2:34 - 2:37
open, I may add another petal. I'm going
  • 2:37 - 2:44
to overlap my flowers. Pull down. You can
  • 2:44 - 2:49
come from outside the circle of paint, it
  • 2:49 - 2:52
doesn't matter, it's better not to seem
  • 2:52 - 3:02
too boxed in. Pull, turn, and lift. Pull,
  • 3:02 - 3:09
turn, lift to chisel. Pull, turn, lift to
  • 3:09 - 3:12
chisel. We're coming into another flower
  • 3:12 - 3:15
here. I'm overlapping the last flower that
  • 3:15 - 3:20
I did. There. I think I like these better
  • 3:20 - 3:26
with 5 petals, they seem a little fuller.
  • 3:26 - 3:29
These are not particular flowers, these
  • 3:29 - 3:33
are fantasy flowers, just for decoration.
  • 3:33 - 3:36
They don't have to be identified as any
  • 3:36 - 3:41
particular flower. But you can see how the
  • 3:41 - 3:44
white stands out, but it's also picking up
  • 3:44 - 3:48
the color that's still damp on the page
  • 3:48 - 3:53
underneath. Okay, also as you turn it
  • 3:53 - 3:56
tends to leave a little bit of an edge
  • 3:56 - 3:59
which looks like a natural turn of the
  • 3:59 - 4:07
flower petal. Pull, turn, lift. Pull, turn
  • 4:07 - 4:14
lift. Pull, turn, lift. That one's looking
  • 4:14 - 4:16
a little bit too symmetrical, so I'm going
  • 4:16 - 4:19
to come off on the side here and add
  • 4:19 - 4:26
another couple petals here. Okay, this
  • 4:26 - 4:30
part I have not done yet, I wanna pull in
  • 4:30 - 4:34
some of this orange and yellow tone. Pull,
  • 4:34 - 4:49
turn, lift. Pull, turn, lift. We may not
  • 4:49 - 4:52
quite finish all of this section here but
  • 4:52 - 4:57
you can get the idea of how I'm pulling
  • 4:57 - 5:00
these flowers in. Pull, turn. You can also
  • 5:00 - 5:04
pull and turn this way, whatever is more
  • 5:04 - 5:07
comfortable to you. If you're left-handed,
  • 5:07 - 5:11
right-handed, find the direction it feels
  • 5:11 - 5:15
more comfortable to you to pull, and you
  • 5:15 - 5:17
can see the flowers are starting to come
  • 5:17 - 5:22
together here. I still have a little bit
  • 5:22 - 5:24
more here, I would like to cover up a
  • 5:24 - 5:28
little bit more of the color, and you'll
  • 5:28 - 5:31
notice when you load your brush, you're
  • 5:31 - 5:34
going to have paint on each side, as
  • 5:34 - 5:36
you're pulling in, you're really only
  • 5:36 - 5:38
using paint from one side of the brush,
  • 5:38 - 5:42
just turn it, use up the paint on the
  • 5:42 - 5:44
other side. You can see our flowers are
  • 5:44 - 5:47
getting a little full. Now for the centers
  • 5:47 - 5:54
very simple you can either use a 1/4 inch
  • 5:54 - 5:59
dauber, you could use a q-tip, you can use
  • 5:59 - 6:02
the handle of your brush. I'm not sure
  • 6:02 - 6:06
exactly right now where my daubers are, I
  • 6:06 - 6:08
know I bought some recently but I couldn't
  • 6:08 - 6:10
tell you where they are. Okay, what I'm
  • 6:10 - 6:15
going to do is look for a brush that has a
  • 6:15 - 6:19
flat end, sort of a roundish flat end, dip
  • 6:19 - 6:26
that end into my green paint, and simply
  • 6:26 - 6:33
daub on. Oh boy, Willow's helping me here.
  • 6:33 - 6:44
Okay, dip, tap. Dip, tap. You may need to
  • 6:44 - 6:47
tap a little bit more, you can go back and
  • 6:47 - 6:51
do it again. I usually dip the brush each
  • 6:51 - 6:54
time I'm going to put a center on a flower
  • 6:54 - 6:57
it just freshens it up and that way you
  • 6:57 - 6:59
don't come up with just a half a circle.
  • 6:59 - 7:03
This paints a little thick, it's kind of
  • 7:03 - 7:06
old. You can try different colors, try an
  • 7:06 - 7:08
orange one if you think that would look
  • 7:08 - 7:11
better. It all depends-- that was a little
  • 7:11 - 7:15
bit thick there-- on how you want the
  • 7:15 - 7:17
centers to look. I think after all I like
  • 7:17 - 7:23
the green better. Dip, tap. That one's a C
  • 7:23 - 7:26
it's leaving a little bit of a hole in the
  • 7:26 - 7:32
middle, so dip, tap again. Dip, tap again.
  • 7:32 - 7:37
And those are my flowers. Okay, that's it
  • 7:37 - 7:40
for this lesson, we'll try again for
  • 7:40 - 7:43
another part of the border, I'm going to
  • 7:43 - 7:48
turn this off and film a little bit of a
  • 7:48 - 7:52
cluster that I did on the wall, and also
  • 7:52 - 7:57
let you see a painting that I did with
  • 7:57 - 8:00
similar style flowers in more pastel
  • 8:00 - 8:01
    shades.
