16:46 - 16:49generates more engagement than lies fear
-
16:49 - 16:51and outrage
-
16:51 - 16:53so it's time to finally call these
-
16:53 - 16:55companies what they really are the
-
16:55 - 16:58largest publishers in history so here's
-
16:58 - 17:01an idea for them abide by basic
-
17:01 - 17:03standards and practices just like
-
17:03 - 17:06newspapers magazines and TV news do
-
17:06 - 17:09everyday we have standards and practices
-
17:09 - 17:11in television and the movies there are
-
17:11 - 17:14certain things we cannot say or do in
-
17:14 - 17:17England I was told that alley G could
-
17:17 - 17:19not curse when he appeared before 9 p.m.
-
17:19 - 17:22here in the US the Motion Picture
-
17:22 - 17:25Association of America regulates and
-
17:25 - 17:28rates what we see I've had scenes in my
-
17:28 - 17:30movies cut or reduced to abide by those
-
17:30 - 17:32standards now if there are standards and
-
17:32 - 17:35practices for what cinemas and
-
17:35 - 17:37television channels can show then surely
-
17:37 - 17:40companies that publish material to
-
17:40 - 17:42billions of people should have to abide
-
17:42 - 17:45basic standards and practices to
-
17:49 - 17:53take now take the issue of political ads
-
17:53 - 17:56on which facebook have been resolute
-
17:56 - 17:59fortunately Twitter finally banned them
-
17:59 - 18:01and Google today I read is making
-
18:01 - 18:05changes to but if you pay them Facebook
-
18:05 - 18:09will run any political ad you want even
-
18:09 - 18:12if it's a lie and they'll even help you
-
18:12 - 18:15micro target those lies to their users
-
18:15 - 18:19for maximum effect under this twisted
-
18:19 - 18:21logic if Facebook were around in the
-
18:21 - 18:251930s it would have allowed Hitler to
-
18:25 - 18:28post 30-second ads on his solution to
-
18:28 - 18:30the Jewish problem so here's a good
-
18:30 - 18:35standard and practice Facebook start
-
18:35 - 18:38fact-checking political ads before you
-
18:38 - 18:41run them stop micro-targeted lies
-
18:41 - 18:44immediately and when the ads of false
-
18:44 - 18:47give back the money and don't publish
-
18:47 - 18:49them
-
18:55 - 18:59here's another good practice slow down
-
18:59 - 19:02every single post does not need to be
-
19:02 - 19:05published immediately Oscar Wilde once
-
19:05 - 19:08said we live in an age when unnecessary
-
19:08 - 19:13things are our only necessity but but
-
19:13 - 19:15let me ask you is having every thought
-
19:15 - 19:19or video posted instantly online even if
-
19:19 - 19:22it's racist or criminal murderous really
-
19:22 - 19:26a necessity of course not the shooter
-
19:26 - 19:28who massacred Muslims in New Zealand
-
19:28 - 19:32live streamed his atrocity on Facebook
-
19:32 - 19:34where it then spread across the internet
-
19:34 - 19:36and was viewed likely millions of times
-
19:36 - 19:39it was a snuff film
-
19:39 - 19:43brought to you by social media why can't
-
19:43 - 19:45we have more of a delay so that this
-
19:45 - 19:48trauma inducing filth can be caught and
-
19:48 - 19:51stopped before it's posted in the first
-
19:51 - 19:53place
-
19:56 - 19:59finally Zuckerberg said that social
-
19:59 - 20:03media companies should live up to their
-
20:03 - 20:06responsibilities but he's totally silent
-
20:06 - 20:09about what should happen when they don't
-
20:09 - 20:12by now it's pretty clear
-
20:12 - 20:13the cannot be trusted
-
20:13 - 20:16to regulate themselves as with the
-
20:16 - 20:18Industrial Revolution it's time for
-
20:18 - 20:21regulation and legislation to curb the
-
20:21 - 20:26greed of these high-tech robber barons
-
20:29 - 20:33in in every other industry a company can
-
20:33 - 20:35be held liable when their product is
-
20:35 - 20:36defective
-
20:36 - 20:39when engines explode or seat belts
-
20:39 - 20:42malfunction car company's recalled tens
-
20:42 - 20:45of thousands of vehicles at a cost of
-
20:45 - 20:48billions of dollars it only seems fair
-
20:48 - 20:50to say to Facebook YouTube and Twitter
-
20:50 - 20:53your product is defective you are
-
20:53 - 20:57obliged to fix it no matter how much it
-
20:57 - 21:00costs and no matter how many moderators
-
21:00 - 21:10you need to employ in every under in
-
21:10 - 21:13entry in every other industry you can be
-
21:13 - 21:16sued for the harm you caused publishers
-
21:16 - 21:19can be sued for libel people can be sued
-
21:19 - 21:22for defamation I've been sued many times
-
21:22 - 21:27I'm being sued right now by someone
-
21:27 - 21:29whose name I won't mention because he
-
21:29 - 21:33might see me again but social media
-
21:33 - 21:36companies are largely protected from
-
21:36 - 21:38liability for the content their users
-
21:38 - 21:41post no matter how indecent it is by
-
21:41 - 21:44section 230 F get ready for it the
-
21:44 - 21:49Communications Decency Act it's absurd
-
21:49 - 21:51fortunately internet companies can now
-
21:51 - 21:54be held responsible for pedophiles who
-
21:54 - 21:57use their site to target children so I
-
21:57 - 21:59say let's also hold these companies
-
21:59 - 22:02responsible for those who use their
-
22:02 - 22:05sites to advocate for the mass murder of
-
22:05 - 22:07children because of their race or
-
22:07 - 22:10religion
-
22:12 - 22:18and maybe fines are not enough maybe
-
22:18 - 22:22it's time to tell Mark Zuckerberg and
-
22:22 - 22:25the CEOs of these companies you already
-
22:25 - 22:28allowed one foreign power to interfere
-
22:28 - 22:29in our elections
-
22:29 - 22:33you already facilitated one genocide in
-
22:33 - 22:38the anime do it again and you go to jail
-
22:43 - 22:46in the end it all comes down to what
-
22:46 - 22:49kind of world we want in his speech
-
22:49 - 22:52Zuckerberg said that one of his main
-
22:52 - 22:56goals is to uphold as wide a definition
-
22:56 - 22:59of freedom of expression as possible it
-
22:59 - 22:59sounds good
-
22:59 - 23:03yeah our freedoms are not only an end in
-
23:03 - 23:06themselves they're also the means to
-
23:06 - 23:08another end as you say here in the US
-
23:08 - 23:11the right to life liberty and the
-
23:11 - 23:14pursuit of happiness but today these
-
23:14 - 23:17rights are threatened by hate
-
23:17 - 23:20conspiracies and lies so allow me to
-
23:20 - 23:22leave you with a suggestion for a
-
23:22 - 23:26different aim for society the ultimate
-
23:26 - 23:28aim of society should be to make sure
-
23:28 - 23:31that people are not targeted not
-
23:31 - 23:35harassed and not murdered because of who
-
23:35 - 23:37they are where they come from who they
-
23:37 - 23:41love or how they pray
-
23:54 - 23:59if we make that our aim if we prioritize
-
23:59 - 24:02truth over lies tolerance over prejudice
-
24:02 - 24:06empathy over indifference and experts
-
24:06 - 24:10over ignoramus --is then maybe just
-
24:10 - 24:14maybe we can stop the greatest
-
24:14 - 24:16propaganda machine in history we can
-
24:16 - 24:19save democracy we can still have a place
-
24:19 - 24:22for free speech and free expression and
-
24:22 - 24:26most importantly my jokes will still
-
24:26 - 24:28work thank you very much
-
24:28 - 24:32[Applause]

Sacha Baron Cohen is the well-deserved recipient of ADL’s International Leadership Award, which goes to exceptional individuals who combine professional success with a profound personal commitment to community involvement and to crossing borders and barriers with a message of diversity and equal opportunity.
Over 100 years ago Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis wrote: “Sunlight is said to be the best disinfectant.” Through his alter egos, many of whom represent anti-Semites, racists and neo-Nazis, Baron Cohen shines a piercing light on people’s ignorance and biases.
