Why raising your vibration increases serendipity | Joanna McEwen | TEDxUniversityofBrighton
-
0:09 - 0:10Serendipity.
-
0:10 - 0:12What a beautiful word! -
-
0:12 - 0:17conjuring park serene sailing,
with a hint of good-natured fun. -
0:17 - 0:19Serendipity -
-
0:19 - 0:21that chance beneficial meeting,
-
0:21 - 0:23the unexpected conversation
-
0:23 - 0:26that provides just the answer
you're looking for, -
0:26 - 0:28the perfectly timed taxi ride
-
0:28 - 0:32that takes you past the cinema
showing the film you'd be wanting to see, -
0:32 - 0:36where you accidentally
knock over somebody else's popcorn -
0:36 - 0:39who turns out to be the boy from school
who you used to have a crush on. -
0:39 - 0:41And guess what?
-
0:41 - 0:43A year later you're happily married -
-
0:43 - 0:45serendipity.
-
0:46 - 0:50So if that is serendipity in action,
how does it work? -
0:51 - 0:52How does it work?
-
0:52 - 0:55Are there higher powers
directing the details of our lives? -
0:55 - 0:58Or is it just a random
coincidence of events? -
0:58 - 1:03Is there anything we can do to enhance
the occurrences of these positive events? -
1:03 - 1:06It is my proposition today
-
1:06 - 1:09that whilst life throws
many events our way - -
1:09 - 1:12some positive, some challenging -
-
1:12 - 1:13we have within ourselves,
-
1:13 - 1:17the power and possibility
to create an environment -
1:17 - 1:20that enhances the probability
of these fortunate events -
1:20 - 1:23that make our lives
a little more plain sailing -
1:23 - 1:25and a lot more fun.
-
1:26 - 1:27Before we continue,
-
1:27 - 1:28I would like to explain
-
1:28 - 1:32that I'm a qualified
and experienced sound therapist. -
1:32 - 1:35I have studied spiritual
and scientific texts -
1:35 - 1:37as they relate to sound and vibration.
-
1:38 - 1:40Some of the things
I'm going to talk about today -
1:40 - 1:43would initially sound impossible,
-
1:43 - 1:45but I would ask you
to suspend your disbelief -
1:45 - 1:48and remember in the words
of the author Paulo Coelho, -
1:48 - 1:53"People never learn by being told,
they have to find out for themselves." -
1:53 - 1:58It's about taking my words today
and relating them to your own experience, -
1:58 - 2:00and if enough truth resonates for you,
-
2:00 - 2:03go out and experience it for yourself;
-
2:03 - 2:06find out if it holds true for you.
-
2:07 - 2:09To understand why I believe
-
2:09 - 2:13we are able to create and influence
serendipitous events, -
2:13 - 2:17I would like you to consider
that we live in a vibrational universe; -
2:17 - 2:19you are a vibrational being,
-
2:19 - 2:24whose cells and organs all pulsate
at a particular frequency. -
2:26 - 2:29Our brain pulsates
with electromagnetic energy, -
2:29 - 2:35affected by our emotions, our health
and our general state of well-being. -
2:36 - 2:40Our body contracts and pulses
at various rates, -
2:40 - 2:44including your heartbeat,
your stomach contracting -
2:44 - 2:46and the very act of breathing.
-
2:46 - 2:51Together, they make up you,
a composite of frequencies, -
2:51 - 2:54and so we each vibrate
to our own personal tune. -
2:55 - 2:59Disease, depression,
negative behavior patterns - -
2:59 - 3:04these are all symptoms of a body and mind
being out of tune, quite literally. -
3:05 - 3:09Not only do our bodies
vibrate on a cellular level, -
3:09 - 3:12these vibrations do not end with this skin
-
3:12 - 3:17but instead, continue out into space
on a vibratory continuum -
3:18 - 3:22being connected by an energy field
or a matrix of waves. -
3:23 - 3:26I'd like you to rub
your hands together really fast -
3:30 - 3:34and then hold them a couple of millimeters
away from each other. -
3:35 - 3:38Can you feel a slight resistance?
-
3:38 - 3:40That is energy.
-
3:42 - 3:43Nikola Tesla said,
-
3:43 - 3:46"If you want to find
the secret of the universe, -
3:46 - 3:51you need to think in terms
of energy, frequency and vibration." -
3:52 - 3:55If an energetic force is struck
-
3:55 - 4:00at the same resonant frequency
as another object in the vicinity, -
4:00 - 4:04the vibrations will cause
the second object to begin vibrating. -
4:05 - 4:07In terms of how you experience the world,
-
4:07 - 4:13the energy and vibration you give off
is met and reflected back. -
4:14 - 4:18We can feel this on an emotional level
-
4:18 - 4:20when we say that somebody's
on our wavelength -
4:20 - 4:23or we feel in tune
with a person or situation. -
4:24 - 4:26Why is it important?
-
4:26 - 4:32Well, if your internal vibration
is one of anxiety, depression, anger, -
4:33 - 4:36the life experience you have
may very well provide you -
4:36 - 4:40with people and situations
that reflect this back at you, -
4:40 - 4:42thereby reinforcing the feeling
-
4:42 - 4:46and so creating a circuitous,
negative experience of life. -
4:47 - 4:50It's a bit like tuning
into different radio waves, -
4:52 - 4:57depending on what frequency you emit
or decide on what station you pick up; -
4:57 - 5:03therefore, if we can raise and enhance
our internal vibration, -
5:04 - 5:06we can create a situation
-
5:06 - 5:10that reflects back
a more positive experience of life. -
5:12 - 5:14So how do we create that shift?
-
5:17 - 5:21Ancient teaching’s view
of how the world is created -
5:21 - 5:23is through sound.
-
5:23 - 5:27Whilst the truth of these views
can be debated, -
5:27 - 5:34what is clear from modern research,
sound can at the very least affect matter. -
5:34 - 5:36In the 18th century,
-
5:36 - 5:41Ernst Chladni put sand onto a glass plate
-
5:41 - 5:45and vibrated it with a violin bow.
-
5:48 - 5:53The sand was pulled into creative
and beautiful symmetric patterns. -
5:54 - 5:57This work has been continued
with the invention of the cymascope -
5:57 - 5:59by John Reid,
-
5:59 - 6:04who uses water as a surface membrane
in which to imprint sound -
6:04 - 6:08and create a digital representation
of sound and vibration. -
6:09 - 6:11In the following video clip,
-
6:11 - 6:14you will see the sound and vibration
-
6:14 - 6:16as represented on the cymascope
of a singing bowl, -
6:16 - 6:19much like the one I have here.
-
6:24 - 6:27(Singing bowl chimes)
-
6:31 - 6:32As you can hear,
-
6:33 - 6:37the bowl has rich and complex harmonics.
-
6:41 - 6:44(Singing bowl chimes)
-
6:53 - 6:55Notice the symmetrical shapes
-
6:55 - 6:59and the similarities to those
found in sacred geometry -
7:00 - 7:04and within the harmonious shapes
found in nature. -
7:06 - 7:10Through the study of
micro cymatics and sonocytology, -
7:10 - 7:15we are now able to hear the difference
between a healthy and unhealthy cell. -
7:15 - 7:18According to Gardner Snook
of Manchester University, -
7:18 - 7:22the difference between a healthy cell
and a cancerous cell -
7:22 - 7:25is like two very large orchestras
-
7:25 - 7:27all playing their instruments
at the same time, -
7:27 - 7:32but in the cancerous orchestra,
the tuba is horribly out of tune. -
7:33 - 7:36In the following two clips,
-
7:36 - 7:37you can hear the difference
-
7:37 - 7:41between the healthy pulsations
of a yeast cell -
7:41 - 7:45and the high-pitched frequency
of one that is stressed. -
7:45 - 7:48Notice the distortions
as represented on the cymascope -
7:48 - 7:51of the one that is stressed.
-
7:51 - 7:54(Sounds similar to distant thunders)
-
7:59 - 8:02(Sharp hissing sounds)
-
8:09 - 8:14Through the latest experiments
using micro cymatics, -
8:14 - 8:18it has been suggested
that through the principle of entrainment, -
8:18 - 8:21whereby a more powerful frequency
-
8:21 - 8:25causes a weaker frequency
to synchronize with it, -
8:25 - 8:29we can excite the membrane of a cell
-
8:29 - 8:33into coherent and geometrical patterns;
-
8:33 - 8:39therefore, if we direct harmonious sound
towards our bodies, -
8:39 - 8:45we are able to bring our cells
into their own optimum frequency. -
8:47 - 8:50Not only do we vibrate
on a cellular level, -
8:50 - 8:53our consciousness,
our thoughts and emotions -
8:53 - 8:57all have their own energetic imprint.
-
8:57 - 9:02Masaru Emoto, in his book
"The Secret Life of Water," -
9:02 - 9:07exposed water to harmonious sounds,
healing thoughts, and prayer -
9:07 - 9:11as well as dissonant music
and negative thoughts. -
9:12 - 9:18He then froze the water and took
photographs of the water crystals. -
9:19 - 9:22The water that had been exposed
to the harmonious sounds -
9:22 - 9:23and healing thoughts and prayer
-
9:23 - 9:27created beautiful
and geometric water crystals, -
9:27 - 9:31and those who didn't
were misshapen or not present at all. -
9:32 - 9:35Many scientists and
philosophers have pondered, -
9:35 - 9:38Where does consciousness
and our thoughts arise from? -
9:38 - 9:42Whether you believe
that it is from a god-given source -
9:42 - 9:44or from somewhere deep inside the brain,
-
9:44 - 9:46latest research has discovered
-
9:46 - 9:50that it is through our
bodily responses to it, -
9:50 - 9:56is in quantum vibrations found
in microtubules within brain neurons; -
10:00 - 10:03therefore, as we have already found out,
-
10:03 - 10:08by putting harmonious
thoughts into our brains, -
10:08 - 10:11we can turn our perceptions
and our thoughts -
10:11 - 10:14from chaos to beauty.
-
10:17 - 10:21We've all used music
to calm and energize ourselves, -
10:21 - 10:24whether it is dance music
on a Saturday night -
10:24 - 10:27or downtempo jazz on the Sunday.
-
10:27 - 10:32Pachelbel’s Canon was my go-to
when in the throes of teenage angst. -
10:33 - 10:35I’ve subsequently discovered
-
10:35 - 10:40that the perfect fifth harmonic
as found in Baroque music -
10:40 - 10:43is one of the most healing
harmonic arrangements there is, -
10:43 - 10:46being both expansive and stable.
-
10:48 - 10:51By creating a steady rhythm
-
10:51 - 10:55through the use of Baroque music,
toning a single vowel, -
10:55 - 10:58or through the use of a gong,
a Himalayan bowl, -
10:58 - 11:03or through a mother
singing a lullaby to her child, -
11:03 - 11:05a steady rhythm can be created
-
11:05 - 11:11that allows the mind to latch on to it,
slow down, and relax - -
11:13 - 11:15the left and right
hemispheres of the brain -
11:15 - 11:18begin to resonate to a steady rhythm,
-
11:18 - 11:21bringing together
the more linear left side -
11:21 - 11:24with a more emotional and creative right;
-
11:24 - 11:28the subconscious and
unconscious minds become aligned, -
11:29 - 11:31unresolved issues are released,
-
11:31 - 11:36and you become more vibrationally coherent
and increasingly powerful. -
11:36 - 11:39When we say that somebody is charismatic,
-
11:39 - 11:43what we are feeling
is their personal vibration. -
11:44 - 11:50When this happens, life starts to flow,
and those serendipitous moments increase. -
11:50 - 11:51Why?
-
11:52 - 11:54I stand to quote the saying,
-
11:54 - 11:56"We cannot solve problems
-
11:56 - 12:01using the same kind of thinking we had
when we created them." -
12:02 - 12:06By creating a more coherent
and harmonizing -
12:06 - 12:10on our bodies and our thoughts,
-
12:10 - 12:12we can change our thoughts
-
12:12 - 12:15and so change the way
you perceive the world. -
12:15 - 12:18We start to see the world
through a truthful lens, -
12:18 - 12:22being curious of the
opportunities presented to us. -
12:23 - 12:26We respond creatively to situations,
-
12:26 - 12:28taking action that perhaps
others might not -
12:28 - 12:31and perhaps we have not done in the past.
-
12:33 - 12:34It is at this moment,
-
12:34 - 12:38those serendipitous moments
that seem so random and elusive -
12:38 - 12:42start to become more frequent and expected
-
12:42 - 12:47because not only are we tuned
into a more enjoyable radio station, -
12:47 - 12:52we become less passive and more active
as steering our course, -
12:52 - 12:57whereby we can live a life more expansive
and increasingly joy-filled. -
12:58 - 13:00Thank you for listening.
-
13:00 - 13:01(Applause)
