Lec 1 | MIT 4.125 Architecture Studio: Building in Landscape

  • 0:14 - 0:16
The first project for the semester
  • 0:16 - 0:24
was designing an outside place in a quarry north of Boston,
  • 0:24 - 0:33
in Rockport. We had gone to the quarry, and the students were asked to find a place in the quarry
  • 0:33 - 0:41
that they liked, photograph it, sketch it, understand it, bring it back to the studio
  • 0:41 - 0:48
and then design a classroom for themselves and me that was sheltered,
  • 0:48 - 0:56
not enclosed, but the idea was, making a place in the quarry that was neither
  • 0:56 - 1:05
natural, nor was it to appear to be built. It was to fit into the context of the quarry.
  • 1:05 - 1:13
they were welcome to use any materials that they thought would related to the quarry.
  • 1:13 - 1:18
When they came back from the quarry, I think asked them to do their first design, and their first ideas
  • 1:18 - 1:20
    for the quarry.
  • 1:20 - 1:34
So what you're about to see is the very first pin-up of the semester, of this very first project.
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    Student: What I
  • 1:36 -
saw that was the impressive thing about the site was how nature is
