Adults have a harder time maintaining close friends

  • 0:00 - 0:12
    [Music]
  • 0:12 - 0:14
    Good morning you're watching breakfast
    Good morning.
  • 0:14 - 0:16
television it is friday and lots of
  • 0:16 - 0:18
people on friday are thinking about what
  • 0:18 - 0:19
they're going to do with the weekend
  • 0:19 - 0:20
what you're going to do in the weekend
  • 0:20 - 0:21
and if you're going to spend time with
  • 0:21 - 0:24
friends we made plans with with another
  • 0:24 - 0:25
couple last night that we're going to
  • 0:25 - 0:27
spend some time with tonight just very
  • 0:27 - 0:29
spontaneous watch and movie there our
  • 0:29 - 0:31
friends there are a couple friends how
  • 0:31 - 0:32
did you meet those group of friends
  • 0:32 - 0:35
neighbors our kids uh our friends and
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    that's how we became friends
  • 0:37 - 0:38
that happens a lot with kids and their
  • 0:38 - 0:40
friends and then the parents i don't
  • 0:40 - 0:42
know well it becomes easier what happens
  • 0:42 - 0:44
over time is that when you have kids and
  • 0:44 - 0:45
you go to similar schools or they're
  • 0:45 - 0:48
playing similar sports then you're like
  • 0:48 - 0:50
uh you got two kids around the same age
  • 0:50 - 0:52
uh we got two kids around the same age
  • 0:52 - 0:53
we're around the same age we're around
  • 0:53 - 0:55
the same age we kind of enjoy each other
  • 0:55 - 0:57
let's get over because then your parents
  • 0:57 - 0:59
can sit upstairs upstairs or the kids
  • 0:59 - 1:00
are downstairs everybody's having a good
  • 1:00 - 1:03
time and everybody's happy nobody's left
  • 1:03 - 1:05
    it's really convenient but there's a
  • 1:05 - 1:06
study that was done you know one in ten
  • 1:06 - 1:10
adults don't have a bff one in ten and
  • 1:10 - 1:12
it's really hard to make friends that
  • 1:12 - 1:14
was that kind of a friendship in your
  • 1:14 - 1:16
    30s and your 40s you're looking at
  • 1:16 - 1:17
friendship in other areas you look at
  • 1:17 - 1:19
your partner as your best friend some
  • 1:19 - 1:21
people you know your friends that you
  • 1:21 - 1:22
grew up with they don't have kids or
  • 1:22 - 1:24
they have kids of different ages and you
  • 1:24 - 1:26
don't well you lose track of friends
  • 1:26 - 1:28
during the course of time but then for
  • 1:28 - 1:30
sure once your kids get to a certain age
  • 1:30 - 1:32
and you can breathe again uh then you
  • 1:32 - 1:34
you kind of rekindle those friendships
  • 1:34 - 1:35
    again
  • 1:35 - 1:36
and i don't know if it's different for
  • 1:36 - 1:38
guys and girls guys can go without
  • 1:38 - 1:41
speaking with each other for five years
  • 1:41 - 1:42
and then women can do that we talk to
  • 1:42 - 1:44
each other and it feels like we haven't
  • 1:44 - 1:45
missed anything and we just can continue
  • 1:45 - 1:47
on but i might be mad at you that you
  • 1:47 - 1:48
didn't call me though that we didn't and
  • 1:48 - 1:50
then you hold a grudge yeah but we'll
  • 1:50 - 1:52
get back to it who are you hanging out
  • 1:52 - 1:54
with right now you know what i
  • 1:54 - 1:56
i i sort of agree with the study but you
  • 1:56 - 1:57
    know
  • 1:57 - 1:59
it's tough i'd say my best friends are
  • 1:59 - 2:01
ones that i've grown up with and that's
  • 2:01 - 2:02
what they're saying they know your
  • 2:02 - 2:03
    family history and they're really
  • 2:03 - 2:05
entwined in your life and entwined
  • 2:05 - 2:07
intertwined in your life and so there's
  • 2:07 - 2:09
that connection that you just can't
  • 2:09 - 2:11
replace with a new friend you can still
  • 2:11 - 2:12
have a good friend that you've met here
  • 2:12 - 2:13
like i have a lot of good friends here
  • 2:13 - 2:14
    at work
  • 2:14 - 2:16
but that we don't have the same type of
  • 2:16 - 2:18
connection if that makes sense and if
  • 2:18 - 2:19
you left work and you went somewhere
  • 2:19 - 2:20
    else would you continue those
  • 2:20 - 2:21
friendships that you have the ones here
  • 2:21 - 2:23
yeah i think so it wouldn't be to the
  • 2:23 - 2:24
same extent right because you don't see
  • 2:24 - 2:26
them on a daily basis but you'd make an
  • 2:26 - 2:27
effort if you wanted to that's the thing
  • 2:27 - 2:29
i think you're more picky as you get
  • 2:29 - 2:30
older with the friendships you want to
  • 2:30 - 2:32
keep in your life because you only have
  • 2:32 - 2:33
so much time yeah like how do you fit it
  • 2:33 - 2:35
all in sometimes when you have a job a
  • 2:35 - 2:37
career you have kids your kids are
  • 2:37 - 2:39
involved in sports you have your spouse
  • 2:39 - 2:41
uh sometimes when at the end of your
  • 2:41 - 2:44
week you're you're tired so how do you
  • 2:44 - 2:46
fit that friend into the end of the the
  • 2:46 - 2:48
schedule and a lot of times what has to
  • 2:48 - 2:52
happen is you have to schedule now
  • 2:52 - 2:53
let's get together you know on that
  • 2:53 - 2:55
we'll get together soon yeah unless you
  • 2:55 - 2:57
schedule you're not going to get
  • 2:57 - 2:59
    together
  • 2:59 - 3:00
yeah you'll block it out well they're
  • 3:00 - 3:02
also saying that when couples hang out
  • 3:02 - 3:03
with other couples you see your partner
  • 3:03 - 3:05
do things like tell a joke they act a
  • 3:05 - 3:06
different way and it makes you feel like
  • 3:06 - 3:08
you're kind of still dating too it puts
  • 3:08 - 3:10
that little spark back in your life like
  • 3:10 - 3:11
when you go on vacation you go on you go
  • 3:11 - 3:13
on vacation with another couple you feel
  • 3:13 - 3:15
young that is if your spouse likes that
  • 3:15 - 3:16
    friend
  • 3:16 - 3:20
    right because
  • 3:20 - 3:22
but there are some of those friends that
  • 3:22 - 3:25
you know if they're the single friend
  • 3:25 - 3:27
and you're the married guy yes and your
  • 3:27 - 3:28
    wife's like he's coming along and you're
  • 3:28 - 3:30
like i'm gonna go out with single friend
  • 3:30 - 3:33
    tonight we're not naming anybody
  • 3:33 - 3:35
they all know who they are watching yeah
  • 3:35 - 3:36
i have a guideline at what time i have
  • 3:36 - 3:38
to come home but if i go to married
  • 3:38 - 3:40
friends like last week with my friend
  • 3:40 - 3:43
dave hudson and howie and paul davies
  • 3:43 - 3:44
all these guys i grew up with
  • 3:44 - 3:47
we all got kids my wife said yeah go up
  • 3:47 - 3:48
yeah because she knows we're going to
  • 3:48 - 3:50
look at family photos play washers and
  • 3:50 - 3:52
go to bed by 10 o'clock at night did we
  • 3:52 - 3:54
show that earlier in the week what
  • 3:54 - 3:55
washers even was well maybe i'll show
  • 3:55 - 3:57
you later yeah yeah he comes up okay
  • 3:57 - 3:59
would you like a vacation do you go just
  • 3:59 - 4:00
with your partner or do you go with
  • 4:00 - 4:01
other couples uh last time we were at
  • 4:01 - 4:03
the cottage we brought up a couple and
  • 4:03 - 4:05
you did for half the week and then half
  • 4:05 - 4:07
the week was just us and was that nice
  • 4:07 - 4:09
just having the two of you it was uh you
  • 4:09 - 4:11
know what like you you're forced to talk
  • 4:11 - 4:13
uh-huh you know you know like or you
  • 4:13 - 4:14
could you could do your own thing but
  • 4:14 - 4:16
    you are forced to
  • 4:16 - 4:17
talk about what's going on in your lives
  • 4:17 - 4:19
and enjoy each other whereas in the
  • 4:19 - 4:21
daily basis you know your work work work
  • 4:21 - 4:23
with work you don't really get a chance
  • 4:23 - 4:25
to get into the deeper conversations
  • 4:25 - 4:26
yeah when there's two couples you could
  • 4:26 - 4:28
have girl time yes right and you guys
  • 4:28 - 4:30
chatty chat and chatty and then there's
  • 4:30 - 4:32
guy time where we really just don't talk
  • 4:32 - 4:34
we just sit beside each other and
  • 4:34 - 4:36
drink drinking beer by the pool go
  • 4:36 - 4:39
fishing like a woman in bikinis don't
  • 4:39 - 4:40
say anything because your wife might
  • 4:40 - 4:42
    hear wear sunglasses guys
  • 4:42 - 4:44
deeply colored sunglasses they can't see
  • 4:44 - 4:46
your eyes but i know you've gone on a
  • 4:46 - 4:47
few trips lately and you go with the
  • 4:47 - 4:49
family you go on a lot of family
  • 4:49 - 4:50
vacations but do you go away with other
  • 4:50 - 4:52
couples oh yeah we have for sure tim and
  • 4:52 - 4:53
trish are really good friends that we've
  • 4:53 - 4:55
traveled many times they got mackenzie
  • 4:55 - 4:56
and they're they're new little guys and
  • 4:56 - 4:58
it's nice because you guys hang out and
  • 4:58 - 5:00
the kids hang out again on the vacation
  • 5:00 - 5:01
and i've gone with their parents on
  • 5:01 - 5:03
vacation and they've actually come to
  • 5:03 - 5:05
with my parents on vacation as well
  • 5:05 - 5:06
    we've all kind of
  • 5:06 - 5:08
intermingled together but i do think we
  • 5:08 - 5:10
all feel the same way we're very close
  • 5:10 - 5:12
at work we are very close at city tv at
  • 5:12 - 5:14
city here and we are like a family and
  • 5:14 - 5:16
we're in each other's lives forever no
  • 5:16 - 5:18
    matter where we go
  • 5:18 - 5:20
we could go to creepy together
  • 5:20 - 5:22
    she knows my address
  • 5:22 - 5:23
we know where you live we're taking a
  • 5:23 - 5:26
break we'll see when we come back
