Computer Control: Full Computer Access with Eye Gaze

  • 0:00 - 0:09
  • 0:09 - 0:12
    PRESENTER: Tobii Dynavox
    software is continuously
  • 0:12 - 0:14
    improving, so there may
    be slight differences
  • 0:14 - 0:18
    between the actual software
    and our training materials.
  • 0:18 - 0:22
Control is an intuitive way of
    interacting with your computer
  • 0:22 - 0:24
    using eye tracking.
  • 0:24 - 0:27
    Designed for people with
    conditions such as ALS,
  • 0:27 - 0:30
    cerebral palsy, and
    spinal cord injuries,
  • 0:30 - 0:33
    Control makes it easy
    to navigate and control
  • 0:33 - 0:39
    your computer using only your
    eyes with complete independence.
  • 0:39 - 0:42
    You might be wondering how
    does eye tracking work?
  • 0:42 - 0:45
  • 0:45 - 0:47
    First, the eye tracker at
    the base of the computer
  • 0:47 - 0:52
    sends out near-infrared light,
which is reflected in your eyes.
  • 0:52 - 0:56
    Those reflections are picked up
    by the eye tracker's cameras.
  • 0:56 - 0:58
    Through advanced filtering
    and calculations,
  • 0:58 - 1:01
    the eye tracker determines where
    you're looking on the screen,
  • 1:01 - 1:03
    putting you in control.
  • 1:03 - 1:06
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    Tobii Dynavox eye
    tracking technology
  • 1:08 - 1:12
can track one or both eyes
    across a variety of conditions
  • 1:12 - 1:16
    having overcome barriers like
    bright sunlight, glasses,
  • 1:16 - 1:21
    head movement, and positioning.
  • 1:21 - 1:25
    Control introduces a concept
    called interaction first,
  • 1:25 - 1:27
    which mimics the
    natural way you would
  • 1:27 - 1:29
use a computer with a mouse.
  • 1:29 - 1:32
    This means you first navigate
    to the object on screen
  • 1:32 - 1:35
    that you want to interact
with by looking at the icon.
  • 1:35 - 1:38
  • 1:38 - 1:39
    And then choose
    what function you
  • 1:39 - 1:43
    want to perform whether that's
    right click, double click,
  • 1:43 - 1:45
    or something else.
  • 1:45 - 1:47
    To open the Google Chrome
    browser, for example,
  • 1:47 - 1:51
    you would activate the
    double click option.
  • 1:51 - 1:54
    The gaze trace
    provides a clear visual
  • 1:54 - 1:56
    of where you are
    looking on the screen.
  • 1:56 - 1:58
    This trace follows
    your gaze, locking
  • 1:58 - 2:00
    if a fixation is detected.
  • 2:00 - 2:04
    This happens when you stare
    at one spot long enough.
  • 2:04 - 2:06
    To unlock, simply
    move your gaze away.
  • 2:06 - 2:12
  • 2:12 - 2:15
    But to interact, select the
    activator icon to bring up
  • 2:15 - 2:18
    the interaction menu.
  • 2:18 - 2:22
    Let's take a closer
    look at this menu.
  • 2:22 - 2:24
    Every time you select
    the activator icon,
  • 2:24 - 2:27
    the interaction menu opens
in the center of your screen
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    like this.
  • 2:29 - 2:32
    Notice that a magnified
    image of the selected area
  • 2:32 - 2:36
is displayed in the middle with
    a menu options surrounding it.
  • 2:36 - 2:40
    This centralized radial
    menu improves eye tracking
  • 2:40 - 2:43
    accuracy and efficiency.
  • 2:43 - 2:45
    You'll find all of your
    main interaction functions
  • 2:45 - 2:50
    in this menu including
    double click, left click,
  • 2:50 - 2:56
    scroll, right click,
    click and drag,
  • 2:56 - 3:00
    opening an on screen
    keyboard, and adjust target
  • 3:00 - 3:04
    for fine tuning your
    initial selection.
  • 3:04 - 3:06
    Let's watch how
    easy it is to use
  • 3:06 - 3:09
    the tools in computer control
    to navigate your computer.
  • 3:09 - 3:13
  • 3:13 - 3:16

    Now that your browser
    is open, fix your gaze
  • 3:34 - 3:36
    on the address bar.

    icon and choose keyboard
  • 3:41 - 3:42

    makes this process easy.
  • 3:50 - 3:53
    Select enter on the
    keyboard to start the search
  • 3:53 - 3:57
    and then close the keyboard.
  • 3:57 - 3:59
    To scroll through
    your result options,

  • 4:12 - 4:17
    keep your gaze closer
    to the scroll icon
  • 4:17 - 4:19
or look up to go back.
  • 4:19 - 4:23
  • 4:23 - 4:28
When you have found the website
you want, close the scroll tool.
  • 4:28 - 4:32

    Now you're ready
    to read the weather
  • 4:40 - 4:43
    and you did everything
    with your eyes.
