Ordering multi digit numbers | 4th grade math (Illustrative Math-aligned) | Khan Academy

  • 0:00 - 0:03
    - [Instructor] Order the
    values from least to greatest.
  • 0:03 - 0:04
Put the lowest numbers on the left.
  • 0:04 - 0:06
So pause this video and try to do that.
  • 0:06 - 0:08
    All right, if you're doing
    this on Khan Academy,
  • 0:08 - 0:09
you could drag these things around,
  • 0:09 - 0:11
but it's good that I'm going
to be able to write this out.
  • 0:11 - 0:14
So what I like to do is
go look at our place value
  • 0:14 - 0:17
    and start with the largest
    place values first.
  • 0:17 - 0:21
    And so, let's start with
    the ten thousands place.
  • 0:21 - 0:24
    So we have five ten
    thousands, five ten thousands,
  • 0:24 - 0:26
    and seven ten thousands,
  • 0:26 - 0:29
so this number on the right
    is definitely the largest.
  • 0:29 - 0:31
Now, we wanna go from least to greatest,
  • 0:31 - 0:35
    so I'm gonna put this
    on the right, 75,314.
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    This is definitely the greatest.
  • 0:37 - 0:39
    Now, what's left?
  • 0:39 - 0:40
So we've used that one up.
  • 0:40 - 0:41
    Now let's think about
    these two right over here.
  • 0:41 - 0:44
Now let's go to the thousands place.
  • 0:44 - 0:45
We both had five ten thousands
  • 0:45 - 0:48
and we both have seven thousands,
  • 0:48 - 0:50
so not seeing a difference yet.
  • 0:50 - 0:52
Then we go to the hundreds place,
  • 0:52 - 0:54
    three hundreds, three hundreds.
  • 0:54 - 0:56
Then we go to the tens place,
  • 0:56 - 1:00
    four tens, one 10.
  • 1:00 - 1:03
So this one over here is the smallest,
  • 1:03 - 1:04
and even if you look at it,
  • 1:04 - 1:05
if you just look at the number as a whole,
  • 1:05 - 1:06
    it has the same number.
  • 1:06 - 1:10
    It's 57,300. This one has 14, not 41.
  • 1:10 - 1:13
So this one is the smallest, 57,314,
  • 1:16 - 1:19
and then after that comes 57,341.
  • 1:22 - 1:26
And so, 57,314 is less than 57,341,
  • 1:26 - 1:31
    which is less than 75,314.
