Glacial Till Features

  • 0:06 - 0:13
Speaker: Okay, so this is the difference
    between uh, glacial till,
  • 0:13 - 0:15
    which is unstratified,
  • 0:15 - 0:17
    and non-glacial till.
  • 0:17 - 0:21
    So, hopefully you can see
    that this, uh, gravel here
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    is well-stratified.
  • 0:23 - 0:26
    There are a lot of
    sedimentary features here.
  • 0:26 - 0:31
Um, you can see graded bedding.
  • 0:31 - 0:33
You can also see cross bedding.
  • 0:33 - 0:37
Maybe I can just sort of zoom in on that.
  • 0:37 - 0:40
So there's cross bedding right there.
  • 0:40 - 0:44
    Very coarse uh, cross bedding.
  • 0:44 - 0:48
    However, the stratification
    or the horizontal layering,
  • 0:48 - 0:49
    the general horizontal here,
  • 0:49 - 0:54
indicates that this is not glacial gravel.
  • 0:54 - 0:56
    Even though it's approximately
    the correct size
  • 0:56 - 0:59
    and sorting distribution.
  • 0:59 - 1:02
    The presence of sedimentary features
  • 1:02 - 1:05
as well as, uh, the stratification,
  • 1:05 - 1:06
    that's the horizontal layering,
  • 1:06 - 1:10
    indicated as not glacial gravel.
  • 1:10 - 1:13
Okay. I'll try and show you
    glacial gravel a little later.
  • 1:13 - 1:17
So this is uh, glacial till.
  • 1:17 - 1:20
It is gravel that is deposited
    by a glacier.
  • 1:20 - 1:25
    Um, and the identifying
    characteristics of it
  • 1:25 - 1:30
    is well-rounded clasts,
  • 1:30 - 1:34
    however they're not
    really really well-rounded.
  • 1:34 - 1:38
    They are definitely rounded
    to some extent.
  • 1:38 - 1:41
    Um, oftentimes there are striations
    on each individual clast,
  • 1:41 - 1:43
maybe I can show you that later.
  • 1:43 - 1:46
Um, those are scratches that are produced
  • 1:46 - 1:49
when gravel bounces or scrapes against
  • 1:49 - 1:51
other pieces of gravel or the bedrock.
  • 1:51 - 1:53
    And the other identifying characteristic
  • 1:53 - 1:57
    is that the gravel itself
    is unstratified.
  • 1:57 - 2:02
    There is no layering,
    no horizontal stratification.
  • 2:02 - 2:05
    Um, and there really are
    no sedimentary features here,
  • 2:05 - 2:07
    other than the lack
    of sedimentary features,
  • 2:07 - 2:12
    which indicates that
it was deposited by a glacier.
  • 2:12 - 2:14
Now hopefully you'll be able to see,
  • 2:14 - 2:16
    if it'll focus on that,
  • 2:16 - 2:21
    the scratches
on the surface of this clast.
  • 2:21 - 2:26
    Those parallel scratches
    are glacial striations,
  • 2:26 - 2:32
which are present on a clast.
  • 2:38 - 2:41
It's stuck in there pretty hard. Argghh.
  • 2:43 - 2:44
    It won't come out.
  • 2:44 - 2:49
And in addition to the lack of uh,
    sedimentary features,
  • 2:49 - 2:54
    um, one of the characteristics
    that you always look for
  • 2:54 - 2:57
is a very very poor degree of sorting
  • 2:57 - 3:00
    in terms of clast size.
  • 3:00 - 3:05
    And so, maybe I can
zoom in on that a little bit.
  • 3:05 - 3:10
You've got clasts of all different,
    uh, sizes.
  • 3:10 - 3:14
    Very poorly distributed.
  • 3:14 - 3:20
I suppose even down to these sizes,
  • 3:20 - 3:26
    which have fallen down
from the cliff face, I suppose,
  • 3:26 - 3:29
    the gravel face anyways.
  • 3:29 - 3:32
    Very poor sorting.
  • 3:32 - 3:33
Okay. Since we're talking about till,
  • 3:33 - 3:37
    I thought I'd show you
    what happens when till, um,
  • 3:37 - 3:41
becomes a rock, when it becomes
    consolidated or indurated.
  • 3:41 - 3:45
This is called tillite, which is uh,
  • 3:45 - 3:50
the rock, I suppose, from glacial till,
    a conglomerate.
  • 3:50 - 3:53
    This one is very old.
  • 3:53 - 3:57
It is on the side of
the Trans Canada, here. [cars going by]
  • 3:57 - 3:59
As you can tell by the traffic.
  • 3:59 - 4:04
    And it is south of
    Wawa in Ontario, Canada.
  • 4:04 - 4:08
    [traffic in background]
  • 4:08 - 4:13
    This particular crop has been
    highly metamorphosed,
  • 4:13 - 4:15
so these in the Canadian shield.
  • 4:15 - 4:19
    Um, so strongly metamorphosed.
  • 4:19 - 4:21
    And this tillite is uh,
    weathering very rapidly
  • 4:21 - 4:24
as a result of the intense metamorphism,
  • 4:24 - 4:27
which has caused cracks and fractures
  • 4:27 - 4:29
which increase surface area, of course,
  • 4:29 - 4:31
    and cause weathering to accelerate.
  • 4:31 - 4:36
    [traffic in background]
  • 4:36 - 4:38
Now realize I'm looking at a shadow here,
  • 4:38 - 4:43
    but hopefully you can see
    that the clasts are well-rounded.
  • 4:43 - 4:48
    Very poorly sorted,
    in terms of size distribution.
  • 4:48 - 4:51
    And are not layered.
  • 4:51 - 4:53
    They are unstratified.
  • 4:53 - 4:56
I just thought you might want to see
what's on the other side of the road.
  • 4:56 - 5:00
    That is Lake Superior,
  • 5:00 - 5:04
about an hour south of Wawa, Ontario.
  • 5:04 - 5:06
    Pretty big lake, eh?
  • 5:06 - 5:11
Kind of looks like the ocean.
  • 5:11 - 5:13
You can't see the other side
    of Lake Superior,
  • 5:13 - 5:17
even though we're way the heck up
    on the roadside.
  • 5:17 - 5:23
There you can see down to the beach.
  • 5:23 - 5:24
    Alright, that's it.
  • 5:24 - 5:27
    Bye for now.
