Glacial Till Features

    Okay, so this is the difference between uh, glacial till,

    which is unstratified,

    and non-glacial till.

    So, hopefully you can see that this uh, gravel here

    is well-stratified.
  • Not Synced
    There are a lot of sedimentary features here.
  • Not Synced
    Um, you can see graded bedding.
  • Not Synced
    You can also see cross bedding.
  • Not Synced
    Maybe I can just sort of zoom in on that.
  • Not Synced
    So there's cross bedding right there.
  • Not Synced
    Very coarse uh, cross bedding.
  • Not Synced
    However, the stratification or the horizontal layering,
  • Not Synced
    the general horizontal here,
  • Not Synced
    indicates that this is not glacial gravel.
  • Not Synced
    Even though it's approximately the correct size
  • Not Synced
    and sorting distribution.
  • Not Synced
    The presence of sedimentary features
  • Not Synced
    as well as uh, the stratification,
  • Not Synced
    that's the horizontal layering,
  • Not Synced
    indicated as not glacial gravel.
  • Not Synced
    Okay. I'll try and show you glacial gravel a little later.

    So this is uh, glacial till.
  • Not Synced
    It is gravel that is deposited by a glacier.
  • Not Synced
    Um, and the identifying characteristics of it
  • Not Synced
    is well-rounded clasts,
  • Not Synced
    however they're not really really well-rounded.
  • Not Synced
    They are definitely rounded to some extent.
  • Not Synced
    Um, oftentimes there are striations on each individual clast,
  • Not Synced
    maybe I can show you that later.
  • Not Synced
    Um, those are scratches that are produced
  • Not Synced
    when gravel bounces or scrapes against
  • Not Synced
    other pieces of gravel or the bedrock.
  • Not Synced
    And the other identifying characteristic
  • Not Synced
    is that the gravel itself is unstratified.
  • Not Synced
    There is no layering, no horizontal stratification.
  • Not Synced
    Um, and there really are no sedimentary features here,
  • Not Synced
    other than the lack of sedimentary features,
  • Not Synced
    which indicates that it was deposited by a glacier.
  • Not Synced
    Now hopefully you'll be able to see,
  • Not Synced
    if it'll focus on that,
  • Not Synced
    the scratches on the surface of this clast.
  • Not Synced
    Those parallel scratches are glacial striations,
  • Not Synced
    which are present on a clast.
  • Not Synced
    It's stuck in there pretty hard. Argghh.
  • Not Synced
    It won't come out.
  • Not Synced
    And in addition to the lack of uh, sedimentary features,
  • Not Synced
    um, one of the characteristics that you always look for
  • Not Synced
    is a very very poor degree of sorting
  • Not Synced
    in terms of clast size.
  • Not Synced
    And so, maybe I can zoom in on that a little bit.
  • Not Synced
    You've got clasts of all different, uh, sizes.
  • Not Synced
    Very poorly distributed.
  • Not Synced
    I suppose even down to these sizes,
  • Not Synced
    which have fallen down from the cliff face, I suppose,
  • Not Synced
    the gravel face anyways.
  • Not Synced
    Very poor sorting.
  • Not Synced
    Okay. Since we're talking about till,
  • Not Synced
    I thought I'd show you what happens when till, um,
  • Not Synced
    becomes a rock, when it comes consolidated or indurated.
  • Not Synced
    This is called tillite, which is uh,
  • Not Synced
    the rock, I suppose, from glacial till, a conglomerate.
  • Not Synced
    This one is very old.
  • Not Synced
    It is on the side of the Trans Canada, here. [cars going by]
  • Not Synced
    As you can tell by the traffic.
  • Not Synced
    And it is south of Wawa in Ontario, Canada.
  • Not Synced

    This particular crop has been highly metamorphosed,
  • Not Synced
    so these in the Canadian shield.
  • Not Synced
    Um, so strongly metamorphosed.
  • Not Synced
    And this tillite is uh, weathering very rapidly
  • Not Synced
    as a result of the intense metamorphism,
  • Not Synced
    which has caused cracks and fractures
  • Not Synced
    which increase surface area, of course,
  • Not Synced
    and cause weathering to accelerate.
  • Not Synced

    Now realize I'm looking at a shadow here,
  • Not Synced
    but hopefully you can see that the clasts are well-rounded.
  • Not Synced
    Very poorly sorted, in terms of size distribution.
  • Not Synced
    And are not layered. They are unstratified.
  • Not Synced
    I just thought you might want to see what's on the other side of the road.

    That is Lake Superior,
  • Not Synced
    about an hour south of Wawa, Ontario.
  • Not Synced
    Pretty big lake, eh? Kind of looks like the ocean.
  • Not Synced
    You can't see the other side of Lake Superior,
  • Not Synced
    even though we're way the heck up on the roadside.
  • Not Synced
    There you can see down to the beach.
  • Not Synced
