Mel-O-Toons - The King's Trumpet (1960)

    Mel-O-Toons presents
  • 0:07 - 0:10
    The King's Trumpet
  • 0:12 - 0:19
    [music plays]
  • 0:24 - 0:26
    Do you recognize that music?
  • 0:27 - 0:31
That's right. It was the trumpet.
    The king's trumpet.
  • 0:31 - 0:35
And here's a wonderful story about that music.
  • 0:35 - 0:41
In a far away land, there one time lived
a shepherd king who owned many flocks
  • 0:41 - 0:44
    and had many shepherds who
    tended sheep for him.
  • 0:44 - 0:48
One day, this king wanted to call
    all of the shepherds together.
  • 0:48 - 0:50
So he sent a runner for them.
  • 0:50 - 0:51
    When they arrived,
  • 0:51 - 0:53
The king spoke to them and said,
  • 0:54 - 0:55
    "Pay heed, ye shepherds.
  • 0:55 - 1:00
    Henceforth, when I call ye,
I will no longer send a runner.
  • 1:00 - 1:07
For look. I have fashioned for myself
an instrument made from the horn of a ram.
  • 1:07 - 1:09
With it, I can make many tones.
  • 1:09 - 1:14
    So hark, shepherds.
If you should hear me playing this,
  • 1:14 - 1:25
    [music plays]
  • 1:27 - 1:30
    Come home at once.
  • 1:30 - 1:33
This instrument we will call, a shofar."
  • 1:33 - 1:37
Soon each shepherd made his own shofar,
and each made up his own call.
  • 1:37 - 1:42
They all made a set of calls,
so they could speak to each other.
  • 1:42 - 1:43
    And while the sheep grazed,
  • 1:43 - 1:49
one could often hear the call of the shofar
    echoing from hilltop to hilltop.
  • 1:49 - 1:53
Later, when the king became mighty,
    he had an army.
  • 1:53 - 1:56
And the shofar was used to call men to war.
  • 1:56 - 2:00
As time went on, men learned
    to work with metals.
  • 2:00 - 2:06
Soon, they found that horns could be made
of brass, and gold, and silver.
  • 2:06 - 2:10
These horns could play many more tones
    than could the ram horn.
  • 2:10 - 2:14
So the kings had trumpets made
    to play their special calls.
  • 2:14 - 2:20
They also found that if they made a trumpet long,
they played a low notes, like this,
  • 2:20 - 2:28
    [music plays]
  • 2:28 - 2:34
And when they made the trumpet short,
they played high notes, like this,
  • 2:34 - 2:39
    [music plays]
  • 2:40 - 2:45
Now in England, there lived a king named
    Richard the Lionhearted.
  • 2:45 - 2:48
And when he made ready to go forth
    with his army of knights,
  • 2:48 - 2:51
he would call his band of trumpeters and say,
  • 2:51 - 2:54
"Ho. Master of the Trumpet. Sound off."
  • 2:54 - 2:57
And the Master of Trumpet would reply,
  • 2:57 - 3:01
    "Aye my lord, trumpeteers prepare!
  • 3:01 - 3:04
    Sound the tucket!"
  • 3:16 - 3:21
Then, as the king and his knights marched
into the great cathedral for prayer,
  • 3:21 - 3:25
    the trumpets could be heard
    playing music like this,
  • 3:25 - 3:30
    [music plays]
  • 3:46 - 3:50
    Early in the eighteenth century,
    a wise musician said,
  • 3:50 - 3:55
    "We need many trumpets because
each one plays only a few notes.
  • 3:55 - 4:01
Now, let me see. If I make a trumpet
    with a piece of metal
  • 4:01 - 4:07
that moves up and down in a pipe and
put a hole in the side of that piece of metal,
  • 4:07 - 4:10
I can use it to connect the
    different pipes to my trumpet.
  • 4:10 - 4:17
When I push it down, air will go through
a long pipe and make a low sound.
  • 4:17 - 4:22
And when I let go, the air will go through
a short pipe and make a high sound."
  • 4:22 - 4:27
Now, he had a trumpet with a valve
    that played many tones.
  • 4:27 - 4:31
Later, trumpet makers built a trumpet
and put three valves in it.
  • 4:31 - 4:35
Musicians found that they could play
all of the notes in the scale.
  • 4:35 - 4:39
One day, a musician brought his
trumpet to the king and said,
  • 4:39 - 4:43
"Sire, I present to you a new invention,
  • 4:43 - 4:45
    a three valve trumpet."
  • 4:45 - 4:48
The king looked at the instrument curiously
    and said to the musician,
  • 4:49 - 4:54
    "Play that instrument musician,
and let me hear what it can do."
  • 4:54 - 5:00
So, the musician raised the trumpet
to his lips and played a tune like this,
  • 5:01 - 5:11
    [music plays]
  • 5:21 - 5:28
The king was very pleased and
    the musician was greatly rewarded.
