Blogs in Plain English

  • 0:00 - 0:04
You've seen the word, you've seen the
websites, and you may even have one.
  • 0:04 - 0:07
    But have you ever wondered,
"What's the big deal about blogs?"
  • 0:08 - 0:10
This is Blogs in Plain English.
  • 0:10 - 0:14
To make sense of blogs, you have to
think about the news and who makes it.
  • 0:14 - 0:18
We'll look at news in the 20th century vs.
the 21st century to make our point.
  • 0:18 - 0:21
In the 20th century, the news
    was produced professionally.
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    When news happened,
    reporters wrote the stories,
  • 0:23 - 0:27
and a tiny group of people decided what
appeared in a newspaper or broadcast.
  • 0:27 - 0:31
    Professional news was mainstream,
    general, and limited.
  • 0:31 - 0:35
The 21st century marked the point when
news became both professional & personal.
  • 0:35 - 0:40
A new kind of website called a web log—
or blog for short—came on to the scene
  • 0:40 - 0:43
that let anyone be a reporter
    and publisher, often for free.
  • 0:44 - 0:47
As blogs became popular, they created
    millions of news sources
  • 0:47 - 0:50
    that gave everyone an audience
for their own version of news.
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    Of course, we're using the
    word 'news' loosely.
  • 0:52 - 0:56
    But really, isn't everything
    news to someone?
  • 0:56 - 1:00
With a blog, a business owner can
    share news about his business,
  • 1:00 - 1:02
a mother can share news about her family,
  • 1:02 - 1:05
or a sports star can share news with fans.
  • 1:05 - 1:07
    These people are all bloggers.
  • 1:07 - 1:08
    How did this happen?
  • 1:08 - 1:11
    Well, blogs made sharing news
    on the web easy.
  • 1:11 - 1:14
Anyone with an idea can start a new blog
with the click of a button and
  • 1:14 - 1:16
    share news minutes later.
  • 1:16 - 1:17
    Here's how blogs work.
  • 1:17 - 1:21
Blogs are websites that are organized by
    blog posts.
  • 1:21 - 1:24
    These are individual news
stories, like articles in the paper.
  • 1:24 - 1:27
Bloggers simply fill out a form like this
one to post a news story.
  • 1:27 - 1:31
With the click of a button, the blog post
appears at the top of the webpage,
  • 1:31 - 1:32
    just above yesterday's news.
  • 1:32 - 1:36
Over time, the blog becomes a collection
    of these posts,
  • 1:36 - 1:38
    all archived for easy reference.
  • 1:38 - 1:42
Also, each blog post can become a
discussion through comments left by readers.
  • 1:42 - 1:45
Blogs make the news a two-way street.
  • 1:45 - 1:48
But really, the fuss is not about
    how blogs work.
  • 1:48 - 1:51
It's about what people like you
    do with them that matters.
  • 1:51 - 1:55
Let's say you have a blog about green
    living and outdoor photography.
  • 1:55 - 1:57
    It reflects your unique perspective.
  • 1:57 - 1:59
    This helps you build relationships
    with your readers
  • 1:59 - 2:02
and other bloggers with similar interests.
  • 2:02 - 2:05
    Speaking of relationships, bloggers often
    work together.
  • 2:05 - 2:08
In addition to comments, you'll read each
    other's posts,
  • 2:08 - 2:11
    quote each other,
    and link your blogs together.
  • 2:11 - 2:15
This creates communities of bloggers that
    inspire and motivate each other.
  • 2:15 - 2:19
Whether it's their ease of use or
    the opportunities they offer,
  • 2:19 - 2:21
blogs have been adopted in a very big way.
  • 2:21 - 2:26
Since 2003, there have been over
    70 million blogs created,
  • 2:26 - 2:28
each with it's own version of news.
  • 2:28 - 2:32
So the big deal about blogs is that they
gave people like you the power of the media
  • 2:32 - 2:35
and created a personal kind of news that
  • 2:35 - 2:38
appeals to a high number of small
    audiences.
  • 2:38 - 2:41
So, it's up to you. What will you do
    with this new power?
  • 2:41 - 2:44
There is likely a group of people out
    there who want to hear
  • 2:44 - 2:45
    what you have to say.
  • 2:45 - 2:49
You can search for blogs using Google's
    blog search or Technorati.
  • 2:49 - 2:54
You can also start your own blog for free
    at Blogger.com or Wordpress.com.
  • 2:54 - 2:58
